Could be a symptom of disease or nutritional deficiency. Or nothing to worry about. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 375734 (OP) 2/23/2008 12:25 AM | | Re: whats it mean if you have ridges on your fingernails? | Quote | yeah, there are no spots or anything or discoloration. i just noticed this, actually. and they arent indented.
its like, it is raised like a scar.. but these are perfectly aligned. in the middle of the nails. i swear these werent there before. which is odd, because this must have happened since the nail was grown in, maybe, unless i just didnt notice. its mainly on the thumb nails.. a small bit on the index fingers.
i used to get the white specks lastyear but that stopped. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 375734 (OP) 2/23/2008 12:33 AM | | Re: whats it mean if you have ridges on your fingernails? | Quote | i never chew my nails. LOL
im wondering if it means something about my bowels. LOL. i read it can be mineral deficiency (oh they say that about all of them), or liver or metabolic issues, or even diabetes. well, all my cousins have diabetes, pretty much and they have those. i have IR, but too much insulin, so far. maybe its turned into diabetes fully. hm. still, my nails never did this. just kinda odd. not freakin out about it or anything. lol. my body is weird and most of the time its nothing serious at all so i just say fuckit half the time anymore. but yeah. just curious.
these are thick ridges, though. i have vertical ones, but they are very light, faint and just, normal. always had those. since i was a little thing. these other ones arent like those.
its actually thicker in these ridgey areas. hmm.
i DO have psoriasis. but not around the nails or on the nails. not that kind. i mainly have it on my scalp, eyebrows, but its under control with my usual regimen. anywhere else it has ceased and isnt active. maybe its metabolic. i have all kinds of weird metabolic things going on with the IR/IBS. LOL |

Answers:
Tiny white speckles appearing under the fingernails suggest a possible deficiency of calcium or zinc, the-activity of internal parasites, chronic constipation, or a state of fatigue. A single horizontal white line crossing the nail is typically associated with lead or arsenic poisoning.
Horizontal ridging crash diets, trauma and lack of attention to diet can create these horizontal grooves in the nails. One single ridge on one finger is probably due to nail damage. One ridge found on all the finger nails may hint of a one off traumatic event, or a crash diet for instance
Horizontal white lines Mee's lines may reveal nutrition deficiency as well as poisoning from certain minerals, also associated with fever and possible coronary disease
Vertical ridging can be hereditary revealing a predisposition to health problems such as rheumatoid arthritis, allergen sensitivity
White specks possible vitamin or mineral deficiency of calcium, zinc, magnesium and possible vitamin B6, also appear as a result of tiredness and anxiety, and can disappear when stress is removed
Long, black specks Bacterial infection of the heart valves
Red streaks Long term high blood pressure, and possible bacterial infection of the heart valves in severe cases
Concave (spoon shaped) nutrition deficiency, lack of energy, constant exposure to chemicals, occasionally found in mental illness, also linked to iron deficiency anaemia and therefore often found in pregnant and pre-menopausal women
Convex (humped nail that curves around the fingertip) respiratory disorders, bronchitis, colds, can be found in the hands of heavy smokers
Humped nail a more pronounced version of the convex nail with a swollen nail bed, revealing respiratory and/or heart disorders, emphysema, heart disease, poor oxygenation, can be symptomatic of cirrhosis of the liver. Swollen, clubbed fingers with a blue discolouration have been associated with lung tumours
Brittle nails lack of calcium, mineral imbalance
Thickened nails possible cardiovascular or lymphatic problems, psoriasis
Thickened, yellow hue can be associated with lymphatic problems, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A yellow hue can also appear as a result of wearing nail varnish
Red nails Poor circulation
Brown-white discolouration Bottom half brown/fawn, top half white associated with kidney disease
Very pale nails possible iron deficiency
Pale nails with thin red band towards the top edge of the nail possible liver disease
Longish square nails Fussiness associated with hypochondria
Very short, square nails Critical, irritable nature, prone to affectation and neurosis
Long and narrow emotional instability, tendency for psychological disorders
Extremely long and narrow hypersensitivity
Fan shaped Also known as the Cardiac nail, being associated with potential heart problems, sensitive, impulsive, irrational, or even neurotic disposition. Nails may take on this shape as a result of severe stress of shock. Stress is a problem for the owner of this shaped nail.
Short, wide and broad explosive temper, strong and resilient |

Is the ridge the MS or kidney?

You're vitamin deficient and all around nutritionally deprived. Dreams will begin as they fade into chaos. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 323477 2/23/2008 3:37 PM | | Re: whats it mean if you have ridges on your fingernails? | Quote | Your nails? Without any other symptoms it is probably a simple nutritional deficiency. Eat a balanced diet and stop eating the crap. Oh and exercise by fucking alot.
Your diabetes? Reduce your carb intake.
But your biggest problem? Your hypocondria -- bite your nails and STFU... or take psychotropic drugs.
If you bite your nails and internalize your stress like normal people, you will do the world a favour by not spreading your worries all around creating negative energies for everyone... |

Verticle ridges indicate a problem with the way your body obsorbs nutrition it may be your stomach or any other pat of your digestive track but usually means nothing serious.
horizontal ridges take about six mouths to grow away from the base of the nail to whear the nail leaves skin, wich indicate a time in the last six mouths that energy level was low, maybe due to sickness, excessive drinking. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 299246 6/17/2008 7:23 AM | | Re: whats it mean if you have ridges on your fingernails? | Quote | Ridges on fingernails is a sign of a lack of one vitamin. I've forgotten which vitamin it is. What you should do, is to get as many natural vitamins from good food, including all the vegetables and fruits you never eat, and then find a complete array of "real" vitamin tablets (not synthetic/fakes) to supplement your meals, every day. Include all the minerals and amino acids in your diet and your strange symptoms will disappear. |
