how do they erase the memory of the sun, the sky, the earth you're walking on, the sea ...........

it's impossible to erase memory. it may be that you cannot remember consciously after such a procedure, but the memory of every cell in your body cannot be erased, because the cell itself is the memory. It is possible to transmute the memory. Remember, the body is a tool to experience the spirit. In a way, it is a very good tool to remember who you really are, within this layer of existence.

i know, erasing memories is much easier than that and has been practiced for a long time

as i've said, it is just not possible to erase memory. it is possible to send certain memories below the level of awareness, namely the subconsciousness. Just because most people do not have a direct line of access to their subconsciousness doesn't mean that the memory is not there. A better method would be to rebuild the line of access, step by step, and taking one memory after another, stripping the memories of attached energy and therefore neutralize compulsive behavior and reactions in association with those memories.

Plot
Emotionally withdrawn Joel Barish (Carrey) and dysfunctional free spirit Clementine Kruczynski (Winslet) strike up a relationship on a Long Island Rail Road train. They are inexplicably drawn to each other, despite their radically different personalities.

Although they apparently do not realize it at the time, Joel and Clementine are in fact former lovers, now separated after having spent two years together. We learn that after a nasty fight, Clementine hired a New York firm – Lacuna, Inc. – to erase all memories of their relationship (this name Lacuna was probably derived from the concept of Lacunar amnesia. Lacunar amnesia is a psychological term for amnesia about a specific event. In this case the 'event' being the relationship. This would be an analogue of the concept of targeted memory erasure. Also, in literary terms a lacuna, which is Latin for "hole" or "gap", means an omission in the text). Upon discovering this, Joel was devastated and decided to undergo the procedure himself. However, while unconscious and having these same memories erased, he rebelled, realizing he wanted to hold on to his memories of Clementine after all.

Much of the film takes place in Joel's mind as he struggles to preserve at least some memory of his love for Clementine. We watch their love and courtship go in reverse. The memories are slowly erased while Joel tries his best to resist the procedure and hide inside his own mind.

In separate and related story arcs, the employees of Lacuna are revealed to be more than peripheral characters in scenes which further demonstrate the harm caused by the memory-altering procedure. Mary (Dunst) turns out to have had an affair with the married doctor who heads the company (Wilkinson), a relationship which she agreed to have erased from her memory when it was discovered by his wife.

Once she learns of this, she steals the company's records and sends them to all of its clients. Patrick (Wood), lonely and socially inept, became fixated on Clementine and uses the personal mementos that Joel gave to Lacuna, as part of the procedure, in order to seduce Clementine. These romantic entanglements turn out to have a critical effect on the main story-line of Joel and Clementine's relationship.

It worked well for me to dissociate unwanted emotional content from a specific memory of mine, just as described in the text.

The memory is still there from a factual point of view but the emotional response it used to evoke is eliminated. This means I can live with the memory for the rest of my life without experiencing problems.

Maybe the technique doesn't work for all kinds of bad memories but it is worth trying in my opinion.

Donald Ewen Cameron (1901-1967) was a Scottish-American psychiatrist. Born in Bridge of Allan, he graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1924.

Cameron lived and worked in Albany, New York, and was involved in experiments in Canada for Project MKULTRA, a United States based CIA-directed mind control program which eventually led to the publication of the KUBARK Counterintelligence Interrogation manual.

Cameron was the author of the psychic driving concept which the CIA found particularly interesting. In it he described his theory on correcting madness, which consisted of erasing existing memories and rebuilding the psyche completely. After being recruited by the CIA, he commuted to Montreal every week to work at the Allan Memorial Institute of the McGill University, and was paid $69,000 from 1957 to 1964 to carry out MKULTRA experiments there. The CIA appears to have given him the potentially deadly experiments to carry out, as they would be tried on non-US citizens. However, documents released in 1977 revealed that thousands of unwitting, as well as voluntary subjects were tested on during that time period. These subjects included United States citizens.[citation needed]

In addition to LSD, Cameron also experimented with various paralytic drugs, as well as electroconvulsive therapy at 30 to 40 times the normal power. His "driving" experiments consisted of putting subjects into drug-induced coma for months on end (up to three in one case) while playing tape loops of noise or simple repetitive statements. His experiments were typically carried out on patients who had entered the institute for minor problems such as anxiety disorders and post-partum depression, many of whom suffered permanently from his actions. His work in this field was inspired and paralleled by the British psychiatrist Dr William Sargant who carried out virtually identical experiments at St Thomas' Hospital, London and Belmont Hospital, Surrey, also without his patients' consent.
