Iraq Vets showing up at homeless shelters. Itīs Vietnam all over again!

Republished from the Washington Times.

Washington, D.C., Dec. 7 (UPI)- US veterans from the war in Iraq are beginning to show up at homeless shelters around the country, and advocates fear they are the leading edge of a new generation of homeless vets not seen since the Vietnem Era.

snips:
īArellano said he felt pushed out of the military too quickly after getting back from Iraq without medical attention he needed for his hand - and as he would later learn, his mind.
"It was more of a rush. They put us in a warehouse for a while. They treated us like cattle", Arellano said about how the military treated him on his return to the United States.ī

and...

īBrown acknowledged the mental stress of war, particularly after Marines inadvertantly killed civilians at road blocks. He thinks his belief in God helped him come home with a sound mind.
"We had a few situations where, I guess, people were trying to get out of the country. They would come right at us and they would not stop", Brown said. "We had to open fire on them. It was really tough. A lot of soldiers, like me, had trouble with that."
"That was the hardest part", Brown said. "Not only were there men, but there were women and children, really little children. There would be babies with arms blown off. it was something hard to live with".

Our soldiers and the Iraqi people have one thing in common in that they are all treated like cattle.

I saw a story - a year or so ago now I think - about a soldier who had returned from Iraq and was homeless because she had no job. She had a baby.

How can this happen? The soldiers do not have the protection they need in Iraq (armor for their vehicles and their persons), and they come home and there is also no "safety net" for them?

Shameful, disgraceful..there are truly no words.

(And bump for truth.)

It is Vietnam again, why should the TPTB changed their policy about the cannonfodder.

And also look how they are pumping up the pressure against Syria and Iran, just as with Iraq and nobody says anything, again fooled.

War is a product the west offers to anyone who will take it. The Arabs have the oil currency to pay for it, so the capitalist are over there giving them what they paid for.

I agree, it is Vietnam all over again. Young men and women in the prime of their lives having their minds f****d up like that, itīs not right. Someone should be accountable. Instead, they are brought home and dumped on the garbage heap.

During Vietnam the TPTB used communism, this time it is terrorism. It is always something to make the people believe that their security, their way of living is threatened.

DW suggests that Freedom Fighters get these men and women out of shelters and into protection. We need to hear what they have to say. Do what you can in your area.

In the press conf Rummy had today, some of the soldiers present spoke about how they were digging in the dirt (!)in Iraq for scrap metal to put on their vehicles (for protection because they lack the proper type they are supposed to have in the first place). It was at once heartbreaking and disgusting to hear, and it was not even the soldier(s) voice I heard (just a report of it).

Rummyīs response (to these and other complaints)was something to the effect of, "You sign up for the army you have, not the one you might like to have." He just may have gotten himself into some hot water for once with such a revealing and shocking statement.

They donīt wake up, as long as it doesnīt affect them, as long as they can buy gasoline and food and as long as the war is in the TV and as long as it doesnīt affect their 24/7 life then they donīt do anything. They may say, īOh how horrible it is thereī but by the time they go to dinner they have forgot about it.

The people will wake up a little for a little while when most average people have a child or might have a child in a war zone or who have have one there who is now dead or wounded or know other people in that situation.
