Re: Anyone have opinions on Anchorage AK???
I hear a lot of people go there, tourist wise, for the huge amount of crazy sea fishing.
That it is beautiful if you love nature.
That it is challenging due to the nocturnal challenges.
Locals are social only with locals, not tourists so much.
Tourists can get obnoxious.
It can be very spiritual if you want it to be.
It can feel isolated in Alaska, in general.

I have never been myself. Only descriptions from SIL and Brother who lived there.

I can only imagine, after living in high elevations in the mountains of New Mexico.
A good guess would be lots of beautiful scenery, fresh air, fresh abundant seafood, probably wild meat available also. Expect the people to be freer, and more adventurous, more outdoors activities.
Have a wonderful stay !

Re: Anyone have opinions on Anchorage AK???
I took the time to write to my old friend
I walked across that burning bridge
I mailed my letter off to Dallas but
Her reply came from Anchorage, Alaska
She said Hey girl its about time you wrote
Its been over two years now my old friend
Take me back to the days of the foreign telegrams
And the all night rock'n rollin' hey Chel
We was wild then
Hey Chel you know its kinda funny
Texas always seems so big
But you know youre in the largest State in the Union
When youre anchored down in Anchorage
Hey girl I think the last time I saw you
Was on me and Leroys wedding day
What was the name of that
Love song you played
I forgot how it goes
I dont recall how it goes
Leroy got a better job so we moved
Kevin lost a tooth, hes starting school
I got a brand new eight month old baby girl
I sound like a housewife
I think I'm a housewife
Hey girl whats it like to be in New York
New York City imagine that
Whats it like to be a skateboard punk rocker
Leroy says send a picture
Leroy says hello
Leroy says keep on rocking girl
Yeh keep on rocking

Re: Anyone have opinions on Anchorage AK???
I've never lived in Anchorage but have visited several times. I think Anchorage is one of the great places in the US, but if you are not outdoors oriented you may have a problem with alaska as a whole. The Summers are absolutely awesome, long daylight hours with tons to do outside, hiking, fishing, exploring, wildlife watching, oh did I say anything about fishing!!!

Everyone should have the privledge to experience alaska and the anchorage/kenai peninsula area once in their lifetime.

Re: Anyone have opinions on Anchorage AK???
It's a very beautiful city with tall mountains in the background, the view from the airport is very nice. The cost of living is not as bad as most people think, except real estate is very expensive as there is nowhere new to build, it's shaped like a triangle bordered by water and mountains. For cheaper housing (not that much cheaper though) some people have moved further out to Palmer and Wasilla.

There is some crime in Anchorage, they even have gangs there now, and many of the social problems are due to alcohol abuse.

It's more down to earth than other cities in the lower 48, people are friendly there, and there are all the stores and malls and such, they also have Walmart and Costco. They get a lot of snow in the winter but the city has a great snow removal system. It's dark, dreary and cold in the winter but light out most the time in summer, that can take getting used to, especially the lack of sunlight in winter which can cause depression.

The city has bike/walking paths throughout which is nice, lots and lots of trials.

There is a lot to do there, though Alaska in general is not exactly an intellectual haven, but there's a lot of fishing and hunting for people who enjoy that, and lots of good salmon to eat.

Heating is less expensive there than in some of the more remote areas of the state as they use natural gas, but electricity is a bit expensive in Anchorage.

Re: Anyone have opinions on Anchorage AK???
I lived there for four years (back in the mid 90's) and really enjoyed it. The winters can get a bit chilly but there is some kind of warmth that shines within. The summers are so beautiful you couldnt even describe it! The worse thing for me was being cut off from my extended family. It is expensive to fly. We drove it (from Florida to Ohio to Alaska) and camped the entire way there. Took a entire month but we only drove four hours per day.

Re: Anyone have opinions on Anchorage AK???
I lived there as a kid in the early 60's. Left soon after the Good Friday earthquake because my dad got military orders back to the lower 48. I loved it. Never remember being cold and I walked to school. My mom says we kids were the healthiest there in our entire childhoods. The people are incredible and have a real can-do mentality. That really became evident after the earthquake and yah-- they happen so, be prepared.

I don't know where you are now, but I do know you should be honored by being allowed to live in AK.

The time you spend there will change you forever.

If you leave there, you will be tortured for the rest of your life with the desire to return.

Re: Anyone have opinions on Anchorage AK???
I have a brother who lives in anchorage, and have visited him every year now for ten years.my brother and I go sheep hunting in the mountains north east of anchorage were he and I have spent more than two months of "my" life above six thousand feet, living in a tent and eating mre's.Alaska's beauty is unserpassed, open and wild. To reach this alaska, you simply need to travel thirty minutes out of achorage. The city it self sprals, pinned between the chugiach mt's and cook inlet. tourism is King in town during the short summer. It is also a military town, with elmendorf afb and fort rich within the city limits. It has more fine dinning and good shopping than were I live in the lower 48.I could never convince my wife to live there, though she has been many times herself, It's too far from her family and support group here at home.If I were single,I would be typing this from my home in alaska, rather than here in the northeast. If it were me, I would live just outside anchorage, eagle river, wasilla, palmer.(almost suberbs).Winters are long, spring and fall are wet and chilly, summer is short! Is it worth it? HELL YES!!!mY recomendation is run don't walk ,pack today, dont let anyone change your mind.I am excited for you, that's how good it is! Good luck, The sheep hunter.

Alaskan Rep. Don Young knows how to bring home the bacon...

A Bridge to Nowhere

Alaska's Gravina Island (population less than 50) will soon be connected to the megalopolis of Ketchikan (pop. 8,000) by a bridge nearly as long as the Golden Gate and higher than the Brooklyn Bridge. Alaska residents can thank Rep. Don Young, who just brought home $941 million worth of bacon.

I do business there and unless you are the out doors type you will not like it.

It is hard to desribe but I will tell you people love it and people hate it with nothing in between.

It's one of the only flat parts in the state and the winter is cold, very cold. It's not as cold as the rest of the state but it's dam cold from Sept to May!!!

If you happen to fish you will love the place and never want to leave! It has the best fishing in the world at your door step!

Summer is wonderful but short and you get 15 hrs of daylight plus!

Good luck! Love makes all a great place to be!

I love Anchorage, I have lived in many other cities and for me this is Heaven. Mountains, Ocean, wildlife, great Hunting & Fishing, plus Anch has a lot of big city stuff for being only 300K in population.

The winters, well I like winter but will admit that the darkness can get to a person. I recommend scheduling your vacation during a winter month.

I love Alaska and so do 650,000 other folks.

fishing? pppffttt. fish and game regs are a fucking joke. then you battle hundreds of thousands of tourists to find a decent spot to cast a line. of course you can take the chance and try your luck on a $300 charter. the greenies have this state on total lockdown. hunting is even worse.
