Will Sterling Silver Flatware be as valuable as silver coins?
We are very poor and can't afford to buy silver or gold coins. I inherited my mother's sterling silver flatware. If I have it melted down, will it be as valuable as silver coins? Need advice from you wise GLPers.

You don't have to melt it down. The weight is all that's needed if you're turning precious metals into cash. It may be worth more as silverware on ebay.

Eating from silver flatware is healthy. You absorb the silver and it gives you health benefits.

Don't have a link, but read on one site where it said this. Also you could drink from a silver pitcher or you can drop a silver coin in your water pitcher to get the silver health benefits.

I eat with Silver flatware and Cloth napkins.

It's good for you and raises your self esteem.

Exactly. If the OP doesn't need the money, then that silverware IS a silver investment and will appreciate at the same rate as the silver spot price.

Go to a good coin dealer and swap it for Bullion coins.

and NO you do NOT need to melt it... just keep it... it will ALWAY maintain value.

Silver is Silver regardless of the IMAGE it is in.. plus it wil already well marked.

for refriner that is the most important point.. that it be marked Sterling Silver .9275

Are you certain it is sterling and not plated? Check for a sterling mark. The act of melting it down is most likely not a good idea for various reasons (equipment needed, how will you cast it, why destroy the identifiable mark of the silver content, etc..).

Re: Will Sterling Silver Flatware be as valuable as silver coins?
You can find the current spot price for silver here:

[link to www.kitco.com]

At the moment it`s just taken a hit and is at $19.50.per oz.

85% or so of the spot price sounds right for what a dealer would give you for sterling silver.

But unless you`re desperate for cash you should keep it, at least until the price gets a lot higher - which it will.

An awful lot of fine silverware got melted down in the 1980
bull market so what you have is getting rarer and rarer.

Re: Will Sterling Silver Flatware be as valuable as silver coins?
How to get the best (spot) price for sterling silver flatware? I went to a local coin dealer and he would only give me 60%. I need to sell about 15 POUNDS of flatware. How to I GET THE BEST PRICE AND NOT GET screwed?

Thanks.
