Cooking with Clara: youtube videos are fantastic!
Someone made a cooking show staring their Grandmother, Clara, who makes great depression dishes and tells what it was like to live in that era.

My Mother gave me a precious little gift, it was in a leather folder that said RATION FOR VICTORY. It was a war ration book. There was one for my Mom, Dad and my sister and myself. There was ration for fuel oil, coffee, sugar, shoes, and a few spares. On the back of the little booklets is stated, When you have used your ration, salvage the tin cans and waste fats. They are needed to make munition for our fighting men, Cooperate with your local Salvage Committee. * IT IS A CRIMINAL OFFENSE TO VIOLATE RATIONING REGULATIONS. Property of the United States Government. She told me the times then were very hard but that everyone was in the same boat and all helped each other. This is when you depend on GOD and the goodness of others.

We talk about how them old folks were scrappy, frugal, and sacrificed to get through - BULLSHIT!

They were just like us. They partied their asses off in the 20's. Let the robber barons run off with the bank vault, then were forced into desperate times that gave them no choice but to suck it up and stand in bread lines, darn socks, or do whatever to survive. We will be the same.

And just like the old timers we'll probably think twice about ever trusting the fucking bankers again. (But the rich will stay rich and our great grand kids will fuck it up all over again too).

Buy an electric Golf Cart! It's alot of fun during the good times and during bad times you can use it for your daily transportation. During good times you can just plug it into the wall to charge. During bad times you can charge the batteries with solar panels.

I can charge mine via the charger or solar.

You can find plenty of them on Kijiji, Craigslist or eBay.

ok heres wat these poor people had to do: work 12, 15 hours a day for public work projects- building roads, tunnels, bridges, dams, power plants, and hospitals. then they would go home and grow vegetables in a garden. as well as raising animals for meat and chickens for eggs. they would send children to pick wild berries & asparagus. sometimes they would eat red clay from the earth. they preserved the food in glass jars. they also had to reuse everything. nothing could go to waste. if ur underwear got too small, you would take out the elastic in order to make a rubber band, then use the cloth for sewing more clothes. it was a hard time period. harder than we could possibly imagine.

i think that the only reason they suvived is because of us girls back then the fathers got payed the most then the brothers get payed half of what their father got and the sister got a third of what her brothers got and when the great depretion came the person getting payed the most got fired first so first it was their father and then the brothers by the end of the day the only one left with a job is the sister. so in the end every one was saported by us girls so all those sexist men should be greatfull

My grandparents lived in a wall tent with a wood stove for 2 years. Grandpaw sawed fence posts and sold them. Asked grandmaw last nite what she did,, she said cooked and waited for grandpaw to come home. Also said granpaw hopped a train one time to go get day work in a city 60 miles away, but got on the wrong train and took him a week to get home. No cell phones to let her know what happened. Grandpaw ended up becoming a welder for the navy yards after awhile.

Get an older shortwave radio (non-digital if you can) and be prepared to use it. (batteries may be used, but most people will have electricity and a radio like lower wattage light bulbs makes the bill cheaper.

[link to www.google.com]

There is also a shortwave radio world band book at the book store or a ham radio book also.

Get tools, like a shovel, pitchfork, and other things you need to hoe or plant with - non gasoline or electrical.

Think! Think of sewing thread, material (cloths) shops, and all of that sewing kind of stuff.

Get some good shoes (boots if needed) that will last a few years - not just a year like most of the junk they sell for shoes. Go to a Redwing store or similiar if you must.

Get jeans and other things that will keep you warm.

Even walmart has a canning cooker (pot) they sell and mason jars to store food in with the lids and such.

Look up things at the Wikipedia like how to make soap and other things like that.

Stories do no good although it is good to read some, and then do some thinking on what you will need. Clothsline, rope, other things that do not cost all that much and may be used with doing something else.

Some people will pull together and others will not. The crazies as I call them will not, so with the other people be aware, alert, learn how to relax to make yourself stronger, and remember there are books in the library on all most anything, and how to fix it books at hardware stores, and any of that also.

Crank-up radios are made nowadays. you turn the handle crank and you get the radio to work for say like up to 30 minutes.

Get a bicycle and spare tires. Remember how to ride it by using it.

Other things mentioned, like walking more, keeping the heat cooler, and other things like that.

Eat less.

Don't eat red meat.

No smoking.

No sex.

Oh, that is the movie "Escape from LA" or "Escape from New York" a few years back.

Re: HOW DID PEOPLE SURVIVE THE GREAT DEPRESSION???Quote

My dad was a young boy during the depression. He tells a story about how he took the family hairbrush and threw it into a creek in the backyard. He was beaten for it and the family had to do without a hairbrush.

My across the street neighbor (died a few years ago at almost 100) was a young woman during the depression. She was frugal until her death. She washed and reused plastic baggies, grew lots of fruits and vegatables in her yard and put up preserves every year. She taught us how to make preserves and gave us all her mason jars that had cracks around the top. She explained how to make a wax covering that would not be affected by the cracked tops.

Re: HOW DID PEOPLE SURVIVE THE GREAT DEPRESSION???Quote

There will be chaos.

The economic system is failing and will end. This is the result of almost a hundred years of a system that somewhat worked but really, when you think about it, doesn't meet the needs of all the people. It's tough at times and how many people do you know who have to sacrifice almost their entire lives for their jobs, etc to collect little scraps of paper called money. When you think about the whole thing seems like bull to me.

I think that the system will have to move on a Resource Based economy. The world is abundant. Don't believe all this about how little food etc is in other countries. If you buy a tomato and you plant ONE seed from that tomato and you grow a tomato bush you will get about 3 -4lbs off a good growing tomato bush. Thats about 15 tomatos perhaps. So each one has about 100 seeds so you get 1500 possible tomato plants off that one seed. That ludicrous abundance and the Earth has been made that way.

I have researched wind, geothermal, solar etc as energy systems - theres more natural energy available than you could ever, ever need on Earth.

It is the economic system that promotes scarcity and fear.

I think we are all about to hit about four to five years of terrible chaos. People will get nasty, there will be a lot riots, anarchy and mess as the system collapses and a new system simply will have to be brought in.

People are already talking about Resource Based economies and how they might operate. Jacques Fresno (The Venus Project) has the most developed plan at the moment but the fact is our technology is the only thing that will save us now.

In the thirties they didn't have information available as easily, nor did they have much technology. We do have this - even energy technology - which could we could implement straight away if we wanted to. It's just that the need has not been intense enough to make that happen. I think that is about to change.

I wish we didn't have to go through what we will have to. Even the World Bank is talking about an overhaul of the economic system. I think we are in for a rocky ride before it sorts out. I think things will be very, very, very tough before they get better.

Back then people were resourceful, the only resourcefulness exists today is stealing. There will be massive riots and looting by these idiots.

The only thing to do is shoot them, because they will not work together on anything but what they can take from YOU.

The American cities are full of them.

Get out to the county or country while you still can, away from the hoodlum types. The prices of anything outside 50 miles of a city limit is going to skyrocket out of reach to all but the rich.
