UGH ! Black Mold in my house, How to prevent returning?
I have never found mold or mildew in my house before. This morning I was washing the windows and found black mold growing in the back bedroom! I useally clean windows once a week, but with the holidays, been stacking off. The condensation has been very bad this year due to all the rains. When we cook or shower we run the fans due to the steam to prevent added mositure. I didn´t clean the windows for close to two weeks. I used diluted bleach to wash after the normal windex cleaning, four days ago. I checked the windows again this morning to find black mold growing again, now on the wallpaper under the window! Any tips to prevent the spread of this invader in my home?

Black mold = mildew

Google Mildew

Keeping it at bay in a constantly moist area is going to be tough.

Use a bit more bleach; don´t dilute it quite so much. No living terrestrial organisms can survive the oxidizing properties of bleach. It is just a matter of finding out how concentrated it needs to be. You could also try undiluted, or barely diluted white vinegar or diluted ammonia. Last ditch effort would be to put the blech solution in a fine mister-type spray bottle, & spray it down lightly once a day for a few weeks. that would even kill the spores.

Much success & Blessed be

Uh ... sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you better plan on abandoning your home because I don´t think there is a cure.

The following is from a Web site I found:
[link to mold-help.org]

After spending thousands of dollars in a failed attempt to rid their house of mold, a Wisconsin family abandoned their $300,000 home with only the clothes on their backs. The water infiltration was allegedly caused by faulty windows, leading to a pervasive mold problem. The family is now claiming that the mold caused brain damage in their daughter, and chronic nosebleeds, swollen lymph nodes, and asthma in their son.

A beach house in Malibu, California was abandoned after its residents suffered unexplained illnesses. After finding extensive toxic mold growth, the home was shrink wrapped, torn down and buried.

Mold is here.

Just in case you´ve been too busy building homes to watch the news, these stories are not isolated incidents. Mold has arrived in Central Indiana. Several lawsuits are pending, local news outlets have been running specials on the issue, and one local legislator has promised to introduce legislation to address the problem.

Re: UGH ! Black Mold in my house, How to prevent returning?
Under certain growth and environmental conditions, black mold, otherwise known as Stachybotrys chartarum may produce several different mycotoxins, including a very strong class known as trichothecenes. Trichothecenes are also produced by several common molds including species in the genera Acremonium, Cylindrocarpon, Dendrodochium, Myrothecium, Trichoderma, and Trichothecium. The trichothecenes are potent inhibitors of DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis, and have been well studied in animal models because of concern about their potential misuse as agents of biological warfare, due to their ability to destroy human health (mentally and physically), and never show up in an autopsy. Sick buildings are one of the three major causes of fungal illness in industrialized nations today.

Re: UGH ! Black Mold in my house, How to prevent returning?
thank you, I will try that. It could be I diluted the bleach to much. I will add more to the speay bottle, and use it once a day to wipe out the spores. I know cleaning windows once a week sounds like a lot. But when you live in a climate that rains, the added moisture reeks havoc on your house inside and outside. I heard one the news, people had to leave their homes due to black mold overtaking it! An once of Prevention, is worth a Pound of cure I say.

So how do you know if you´ve got mold in your house, other than if you obviously see it?

Don´t panic. Not all, or even most, black mold is Stachybotrys chartarum. Even if it is Stachybotrys, not all of the subtypes make the earlier mentioned fungal toxins.

As for abandoning the house, that would be in a situation where you have MANY leaks that can´t be corrected; plumbing, roof, seepage, windows, etc. A little condensation is not going to cause a massive growth of mold. Use the bleach, as suggested earlier & try to dry things up a bit. If necessary, just get a dehumidifier. Even if condensation is occuring, the dry air will prevent the condensation. The bleach mist on a regular basis will kill the spores eventually.

Try using a dehumidifier in the moist area along with the treatments the other posters have mentioned. This will give you a fighting chance at eradicating it.

Damn. AC11:57 you beat me. Damn.

Plus, you do get some heat from the dehumidifier so in the winter its not all an energy loss.... in the summer it will heat things up a small amount.

Believe it or not the good old fashioned 7 mule team or whatever the number borax. Chlorox only kills what´s on the surface. The borax penetrates into the surface and kills at a deeper level. It´s also less toxic to your lungs. You can burn your lungs pretty bad by not ventilating when working with clorox.
Good luck

Plans for an ozone genrator here.

[link to www.a1b2c3.com]

You need to be careful to not breath in ozone in large amounts as it can damage your lungs but it will kill any microbial organism it touches.

So if you build this make sure the plug is long enough to be plugged in, in an adjacent room.

As far as the choice for the page it was just a quick search but yes alot of weed growers use ozone for their personal crops.

It follows the basic principals of building one.

I´m always skeptical of the maladys that suddenly become so popular and scare the hell out of everybody. My insurance company put a rider on it excluding black mold responsibility this past year. A few years ago it was radon that suddenly was putting everyone at risk. I´ve been around for seventy years and these things were never a consideration in the past and now they are of primary importance in our lives. Any how, I do run an ozone genrator in my house just to clean the air a little.

you can get high volume exhaust fans at a building supply. make sure your exhaust duct is open and free. do this by finding where it exits the house and feeling the air flow.

partially clogged dryer vents are another source of humidity.

Re: UGH ! Black Mold in my house, How to prevent returning?
I am a carpenter, and spent most of this year remodling trailers. Older trailers leak ALOT!
I saw alot of black mold.
The first step is to stop the leak. Replace windows, or if that is not feasible, caulk the hell out of them inside and out. If mold gets in behind the sheetrock/paneling or whatever you have for wall coverings, you have to remove them and even replace the insulation and framing. If it is on the surface of your walls, simply paint over it with an EXTERIOR paint. This will kill the mold and stop it from growing. You should use bleach to clean the surface as much as possible first tho.
Make sure you wear a mask. The mold is nasty smelling stuff.

I don´t think my insurance excluded black mold, but I had better take a look. I will check out info. about the ozone generator too. I am also careful about new gadets claiming a cure all, but I will check it out. Thanks again for all the help.
Good night, sleep tight,
Don´t let the black mold bite :)
