TEXAS UNCENSORED User ID: 391081 United States 03/12/2008 08:44 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We need to start having grocery stores stocked with local produce, meats, and processed foods. Surplus gets shipped out from there. Right now, it's backwards. It makes all of our food more expensive, because it costs more to get it into the stores, including unneeded transport fees. Most of the countries who produce enough for themselves will have to make sure they feed their own first, and stock up a plenty. Only then, can any of us afford to be the free groceries for anyone else. The areas of the planet with constant shortages are in their mess for many reasons. They do not practice birth control, they do not take responsibility to plant their own crops, they are poorly educated because of those two factors. I don't mean to be heartless, but the people in these areas have gotten lots of help for decades. They still can't do for themselves. It's time they learn. If they can't , or won't, we need to let it go. Like tossing the young adult who won't work or cook out of the house. We need to take care of our own. We have yet to do that. It's long overdue. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 389881 United States 03/12/2008 08:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Warning over world food shortages Quoting: jarhaEgyptians are demanding for the army to intervene and control the food crisis [EPA] The UN secretary general has warned that millions of people are at risk of starvation as global food stocks have fallen to their lowest levels for decades. In a letter to a US newspaper Ban Ki Moon warned that shortages are forcing prices to rise which may have devastating consequences for the world's most vulnerable communities The most acute effects have been seen in Egypt, where thousands of people have resorted to violence due to shortages of basic food commodities and rising food prices. At least 10 people have died over the past two weeks, in riots that erupted at government subsidised bakeries. The unavailability of basic food products such as bread, rice, sugar and cooking oil, coupled with high food prices has led many to protest against the Egyptian government and resort to violent tactics. National crisis An Egyptian man said: "People are fighting. Killing for bread, some are even pulling out knives. What is happening? What is this? Famine?" Another woman, waiting at a government bakery said: "I've been standing here from 7am. Its now 2pm and I can't get hold of even one loaf of bread." "I have five children. What am I supposed to do? You now need to bribe someone to get bread, if you do not want to get trampled on." Egypt is one of the world's largest importers of wheat and this year alone spent $2.6 billion on its wheat-import. However, soaring food prices has driven many Egyptians to the brink of starvation. Al Jazeera's Jamal El Shayyal reported from Cairo, that people were demanding drastic measures to be taken and wanted the military to be called in, to solve the food crisis. An Egyptian waiting in a queue for bread, said: "The army is the only power capable to plant the people's wheat. We want the government to distribute the wheat fairly amongst the poor." Meanwhile, the Egyptian government has added an additonal 15 million names to the register of people who are eligible to receive subsidies on basic products such as sugar, rice and oil, which has compounded the problem. Egyptians are demanding for the regular availability of basic food products and a cut in the price of essential commodities. Global phenomena The shortage of food has now assumed a global dimension; some 73 million people in 78 countries depend on the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP). According to their figures, 1 out of every 80 person relies on somebody else to provide for basic food requirements. Most of these handouts are taking place in Africa, Asia and Central America, but developed countries are feeling the impact for the first time as well. Rice, corn, dairy and poultry products are the worst affected commodities, around the globe. Multiple factors Marcus Prior, spokesman for the World Food Programme in East Africa said, that there were multiple factors contributing to this global crisis. "There are a number of elements that have all come together at the same time," he told Al Jazeera. "Perhaps, the most important is the rise in global fuel prices, which is having a chain-reaction effect through the food production system. Right from the cost of input such as fertiliser and seeds, through the harvesting and the storage and delivery process." Prior said that there has been an enormous increase in the demand from booming economies such as India and China. "People there are eating a lot more meat than they used to," he said. The UNWFP said another key factor contributing in the global decrease of productivity was weather irregularities all across the world. Anonymous Coward User ID: 207913 United States 03/12/2008 09:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | On December 19th, 2007, President George W. Bush signed into law the "Energy Independence and Security Act" (summary pdf 107kb), which mandates that 36 billion gallons of biofuels be produced in America every year by 2022, a nearly fivefold increase over current production levels. Ethanol (vodka minus H2O) and "biodiesel" (a.k.a. cooking oil) are made from food or inedible crops which displace normal agricultural activity. Biofuel crops include corn, sugarcane, cassava, rapeseed (canola oil), soybeans, palm trees (palm oil), as well as experimental "second generation" crops such as switchgrass, jatropha, giant reed, hemp, and algae. In 2007, 54% of the world's corn was grown in the USA, and an ever increasing percentage of that crop ended up in gas tanks instead of stomachs. Ethanol production took only 7% of American corn in 1998, but has grown as a cancer on our food supply, taking 37 to 38% by 2007 (reference Fermenting the Food Supply by Stuart Staniford). We use corn to feed chickens and cattle, so the price of poultry, eggs, beef, and dairy products will continue to rise. The amount of corn required to fill the 18.5 gallon gas tank of a Toyota Camry with ethanol is enough to feed a human being for 270 days. At current levels of biofuel production, this "renewable energy source" has already caused huge increases in the price of food around the world which can be experienced firsthand at any supermarket in America. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), global food prices rose an incredible 40% in the year 2007 alone, producing the highest food cost level on record and qualifying 2007 as a year of food price hyperinflation! Unfortunately, few consumers/voters understand exactly why food prices have risen so dramatically, and even our most respected politicians do not comprehend the inevitable global food disaster that lies just ahead, and which they themselves helped create. Wheat's rally lifted other agriculture commodities, with corn and soybean futures trading sharply higher. Precious metals and energy futures also rose. Wheat prices have surged to historic highs as bad weather has battered crop after crop around the globe, most recently in India and Canada. Foreign buyers scrambling to lock in supplies have increasingly turned to the United States, which is exporting the grain at record pace. The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a bullish report Friday predicting U.S. wheat inventories will total 272 million bushels by the end of May, the lowest in more than five decades and about 7 percent less than expected last month. Wheat for March delivery surged the 30-cent daily limit to settle at $10.93 a bushel on the Chicago Board of Trade the highest ever for that contract. Wheat also hit record-highs on Thursday and Wednesday. Unprecedented demand for agricultural products from fast-growing countries including China and India has exacerbated the supply crunch for wheat, which has more than doubled in price since last year. The higher wheat prices may not immediately affect U.S. consumers since big food companies like Kellogg Co., General Mills Inc., and Kraft Foods Inc. typically protect themselves from price volatility with long-term supply contracts. But the spike could lead foreign government to implement price controls to thwart already rising food inflation, especially in developing countries, analysts say. "People must eat so you may see governments stepping in to help citizens," Kub said. " You're already seeing problems in places like Pakistan, where they're literally running out of flour and wheat." Other agriculture futures also rose Thursday. March soybeans climbed 7.5 cents to settle at $13.39 a bushel after earlier spiking to a record $13.745. March corn rose 8.5 cents to settle at $5.08 a bushel, while March oats added 9.25 cents to settle at $3.50 a bushel. [link to abcnews.go.com] |

They can ration it to us too, Jarha, and it has been done in the past. If we allow food to be used as a weapon against the world, then it will end up being used as a weapon against us. In the U.S. almost everyone is already off the land, so restricting access will be much easier, than it was, say in the Ukraine in the 30's, when 11 million or so farmers were starved to death by their own government. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 207913 United States 03/12/2008 09:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The biofuel hoax is causing a world food crisis! As our politicians drill the human food supply for energy The United Nations states that its charity programs can no longer afford to feed the starving peoples of the world because of the high cost of food created by biofuel production. Jean Ziegler, the UN's Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, denounced biofuels as "a crime against humanity." Local food banks in the United States are running low on supplies, and many families who use to contribute food are now in need of help themselves. When farmers plant more corn in order to cash in on high prices created by biofuel mandates, they reduce production of other crops such as wheat. The United States Department of Agriculture has stated that on May 31, 2008, US wheat supplies will be lower than any time since 1948, when the US population was less than 147 million people. [60 year wheat supply low] The increased cost of oil has pushed the price of all products higher, but biofuel production has amplified an expected moderate food price rise by shrinking food supplies, thus turning a manageable cost problem into a global humanitarian disaster. Oil price increases have not shrunk the human food supply, but biofuel production has! The more biofuels we produce, the less food we have to eat because we grow biofuel crops using the same land, water, fertilizer, farm equipment, and labor we use to grow food. As massive new biofuel mandates have only recently been signed into law, the world should be warned that the biofuel food price spiral has only just begun. [see Parallels - Biofuels and Mao's "Great Leap Forward"] The Bush "Energy Independence and Security Act" is a prescription for planetary suicide. It dramatically shrinks the human food supply while rapidly accelerating global warming and aggravating water shortages. As a politically concocted manmade disaster, it is reminiscent of Chairman Mao Tse Tung's 1958 Five Year Plan, known as "The Great Leap Forward," in which China's agriculture based economy was forcefully shifted to industrial output at the expense of food production. Does that sound familiar? Mao's well meaning plan ended up causing the largest famine in history in which tens of millions died from starvation. [link to home.att.net] |
