Interestingly enough, I went to Mountain House .com the other day to see about some more #10 cans of freeze dried food. Mountain House makes the best tasting freeze dried foods that have a 35+ year shelf life and is world known. They were sold out!! And I mean almost completely sold out of everything!!

Maybe I waited too long.

Amaranth Grain Online
[link to www.homegrownharvest.com]

Goodbye wheat, hello amaranth, say consumers
Alternative grains with higher fiber and protein move into the mainstream
[link to www.msnbc.msn.com]

Organic Amaranth
[link to www.livingtreecommunity.com]
These beautiful seeds are tan in color. Amaranth seed is high in protein (15-18%). It has the highest lysine content of all the grains. Lysine is an amino acid not frequently found in grains. It is high in fiber and contains calcium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, and vitamins A and C.

The fiber content of amaranth is three times that of wheat and its iron content, five times more than wheat. It contains two times more calcium than milk. Using amaranth in combination with wheat, corn or brown rice results in a complete protein as high in food value as fish, red meat or poultry.

Amaranth also contains tocotrienols (a form of vitamin E) which have cholesterol-lowering activity in humans. Cooked amaranth is 90% digestible and because of this ease of digestion, it has traditionally been given to those recovering from an illness or ending a fasting period. Amaranth consists of 6-10% oil, which is found mostly within the germ. The oil is predominantly unsaturated and is high in linoleic acid, which is important in nutrition.

The amaranth seeds have a unique quality in that the nutrients are concentrated in a natural "nutrient ring" that surrounds the center, which is the starch section. For this reason the nutrients are protected during processing.

We own a business and wanted to sell the #10 cans. We can't get them in four at least 4 months. We then ordered some for ourselves retail just to have in the mean time.

If you live in the suburbs or the country, your best option is to grow your own food in a garden and can it yourself. It'll last two or three years as long as the lid remains sealed.

Re: Best places to buy bulk food online?
For spices, herbs, tea and specialty items, you can't beat

San Francisco Herb Company
[link to www.sfherb.com]

I have ordered from them many times and been extremely satisfied with their service and the quality of their products.

In addition to spices, herbs, tea and specialty items like sea salt and baking ingredients, they have a selection of dehydrated (not freeze dried) vegetables, I have tried the soup mix and the green peppers and have used them quite a bit in cooking. I am very happy with the dried vegetables and think you could get in the habit of using them regularly in your cooking to supplement the fresh produce.

Their essential oils including oil of oregano are top notch. I have tried other suppliers and San Francisco Herb has better essential oils. I am going to order black tea and green tea again from them soon. It is so much cheaper and better than what I can get in the store here.

Re: Best places to buy bulk food online?
dumpsterdiving is a fun read, but a bit "iffy".

If you are thinking of "getting a deal" on food, the shipping may just eat you alive; IF you even are able to take delivery. Think there is really that much time remaining?

The best place to buy, RIGHT NOW, is locally. Your local healthfood store can likely get you Organice whole grains at 10% discount and have your stuff within a few days. Maybe they will even cut you a better deal if you pay cash? Can't hurt to ask.

If you are not already setup with some decent food storage, you need to act Right Now!

What you can get In-Hand beats a "good price" that never arrives.

Good Luck and God Bless.

Re: Best places to buy bulk food online?
Hey, ya know, you'd be better off buying the biggest bags of flour, rice, beans, cornmeal, etc. you can find at your nearest big grocery store. Costco is the best, but not everybody has them available. Also the stores that cater to Mexicans will sell the big bags of rice and beans and cornmeal, so you might try that. You just can't get much online without spending tons on shipping, it's not really worth it.
