I agree with this if you look at the statistics 42% of lung cancer is in people who have never smoked or been around anyone who smoked.
If you look to incidents of lung cancers per amount of smokers in rural areas where the air is cleaner, you will find it is less.
I was once shown a photo by a respiratory specialist of a person who never smoked and never was near anyone who smoked and he called it a "City" lung and it looked like a black piece of dead meat.
Although smoking is not good for you, I believe the amount of deaths and illness's blamed on it is a lie.

Radon exposure is the second major cause of lung cancer, after smoking.

You see they lie about this, Radon gas is more than likely the primary most common cause of lung cancer, not secondary.

I fist saw this in a Woody Allen movie in the 70's

Certainly there are good things about nicotine..trace amounts are found in our food as it is. During the Great PLAUGE, people smoked to ward it off. The problem today is all the carcinogens and crap that is in there. Natural may be the way to go.

BUT . . . a few cigerattes, or cigar, or pipe just may SAVE YOUR LIFE during the H1N1 or any other flu that produces the IMMUNE STORM.

NATURAL NICOTINE

By Lisa Melton

Scientific American; Jun2006, Vol. 294 Issue 6, p24-24,
Also found on PUB MED

This takes some common sense when reading. First of all, once a cytokine storm hits, the patient is usually in the hospital. From what I have read the nicotine is needed to help prevent the storm from occurring.

I submit this simply for your consideration.

HOW NICOTINE STOPS INFLAMMATION COULD LEAD TO NEW DRUGS.
In the past few years researchers have found that the substance can
alleviate symptoms of ailments such as Alzheimer's disease and
ulcerative colitis. Just how nicotine battles these foes, however, has
remained unclear. Now, by studying sepsis, Luis Ulloa of North Shore
University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y., has evidence elucidating
nicotine's biochemical pathways that could lead to more potent
anti-inflammatory drugs.

Sepsis, the most lethal of inflammatory conditions, is a bacterial
invasion of the bloodstream. The third leading cause of death in the
developed world, it accounts for nearly 10 percent of overall deaths in
the U.S. every year. Infection causes part of the damage, but what makes
patients critically ill is their own fiercely aggressive immune
response. Macrophages churn out huge quantities of proinflammatory
cytokines. This exaggerated immune response leads to tissue damage, and
eventually the patient dies of cardiovascular dysfunction and multiorgan
failure.

Ulloa and his collaborators have found something remarkable: nicotine
can shut down this overshooting inflammatory response, to the point of
reversing sepsis in mice. As far as anti-inflammatory treatments go,
this is powerful stuff. "Nicotine taps into the body's own potent
anti-inflammatory mechanisms," Ulloa explained in February at a Novartis
Foundation meeting in London. "That is the beauty of our approach. By
using nicotine, we are copying physiological mechanisms that have been
selected by evolution to modulate the immune system."

Specifically, nicotine mimics acetylcholine, the Cinderella of
neurotransmitters. Largely ignored over the years, acetylcholine has
been catapulted into a starring role, linking the nervous and the immune
systems. Through acetylcholine the nervous system controls the
inflammatory fires that constantly crop up in our bodies. Receptors for
acetylcholine reside not only on nerve cell endings but also on immune
cells. Nicotine binds and activates these receptors, allowing cross talk
between the brain and immune system.

Now Ulloa's group may have provided an explanation for the positive
effects that nicotine has on illnesses as diverse as schizophrenia,
Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, Tourette's syndrome and ulcerative
colitis. In laboratory experiments, Ulloa demonstrated that nicotine
latches onto the nicotinic receptors on macrophages and stops them from
spewing out inflammatory cytokines. This clampdown is brutally
effective. The researchers also identified the specific receptor
subtype, the alpha-7 acetylcholine receptor, that nicotine binds in
macrophages to stop cytokine production. As a potent anti-inflammatory, nicotine can damp down a dangerous immune
response.

I have always been suspicious of why the government pushed us all to quit smoking. It was Surgeon General C. Everett Koop who decided everyone had to quit smoking. Who needs the government controlling what you do with your own body? Then there are all these exaggerated claims about second hand smoke to get non-smokers to pressure smokers to quit. They keep coming up with more and more 'evidence' that smoking causes every evil in the world. I don't buy it.

Re: SMOKING IS HEALTHY ! .......YOU'RE ALL BEING LIED TO.Quote

Hello,

I have several views on this particular topic that I wish to share, many of these views are against the general concensus of this forum but I felt that I should post it anyway. (note, I am a non-smoker)

1. Going way back to the smokers don't get colds idea in the first post. Could it also be that smokers feel bad enough everyday that they get used to the feeling and don't notice colds as often? That idea may sound completely ludicris, but that is a fact when it comes to sleep disorders and the feeling of tiredness on a daily bases, I.E. when the person doen't get enough sleep on a daily basis that they get used to the feeling and no longer notice it, though the damage in reaction times, energy, and alertness are still noticeable to others. I wonder if it may be the same for smokers and the ill feeling that may come from smoking. (if there are any). Again this could be wrong and I have nothing to back it up with when it comes to actual medical reports, but it's an idea. (Plus as an added note, I rarely get sick, maybe once a year, but I don't smoke, drink, or do drugs).

2. There are thousands of folk remedies such as the Californian Indian cold medicine through smoking. However that does NOT mean they actually work. Some, like the Roman use of acetum as an anestheptic, do work, but others, like using honey to treat insect bites or the use of mercury as a treatment for syphilis, have no or bad effects. And yet these people used those treatments for many, many years.

3. I agree that the pharmaceutical companies may be, and probably are, using anti-tobacco hype as a way to make money off of nicotine pathces, anti-addiction medicines, and other such product. However, this does not mean that what they say is false. Just because the corporations "advertise" problems for the wrong reasons, doesn't mean there isn't a problem.

4. It is already known that air pollution from factories, cars, and other gas, coal, and fossil and or natural gas fueled things cause adverse effects on the health of the population that may be worse than smoking, big surprise, but does this justify smoking? Why keep smoking a harmful substance just because the air you breath also causes damage? It's as if your saying "well i'm gonna get cancer from this anyway, so why stop smoking?"

5. Many people in this forum keep citing C. Everett Koop as the cause of the apparently "sudden" decline in tobacco industry and the cause of all the safety regulations. However, Koop started his "tobacco war" in 1984 with his report on the addictiveness of nicotine, but warning labels had been required on cigarette boxes since the 1965 Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act when the ill effects of smoking where becomming widely criticised. In fact one very large contributor to the anti-smoking craze wasn't the government, but rather a 1964 article fom Reader's Digest titled "Cancer by the Carton". And even before that one of the first major studies that showed problems with smoking came not from here in America but from researchers in Cologne, Germany in 1930, who showed a statistical correlation between cancer and smokers. So don't blame C. Everett Koop and the government for tobacco's bad name when there was evidence of health issues long before, and not just in America.

6. As to the correlation with the Industrial Revolution and cancer. As i said before, yes it's known that air pollution can cause serious problems (the Industrial Revolution being the height of factory growth in America), you just don't hear about it much in conjuntion with cancer since most people connect it with environmental troubles than with their health. Plus, their is bound to be a rise in cancer problems when the populaion of the U.S., partly as a result of better living conditions caused by the Industrial Revolution, more than doubled from 36 million when the I.R. started in approx. 1870 to 80 million by 1900 and is about 305,530,000 as of Jan. 1, 2009.

7. As to the question, why, when most other drugs are illegal, isn't tobacco illegal? And what about alcohol? As for tobacco, one of the reasons it's not illegal where the other's are, is the fact that it doesn't cause the same side effects as the other ones. You can't get "high" off of cigarettes (at least not to the best of my knowlege), and most of the other drugs cause more dangerous effects such as severely reduced reaction time, violent behavior, and even hallucinations. Plus you can overdose on almost everyother drug (save for marijuana I believe) which you can't do with cigs. And most of you may be thinking, "But alcohol does ALL of that stuff! Why isn't IT illegal?" Truth is, we tried to make it illegal during the prohibition years. We know exactly what it did. But so many people drank alcohol that it became a major problem when it was banned. So many people complained or became bootleggers that the work to keep it illegal became too much. Plus breweries, which had been a pretty good part of the economy, closed, causing many people to lose jobs, which led to a small scale economic recession. So the answer to both those questions would be, so many people were already doing it, and it had become a large enough part in the economy, that outlawing it is too much to handle.

8. When it comes to families who have a large amount of smokers, but no lung cancer deaths, the answer probably lies with genetics. Over time this family might have gained a resistence to the cancer-causing effects of smoking, and then passes part of that resistance down. Plus since the average lifetime risk of lung cancer in male smokers is about 17% and 12% in females, I can see why whole families have more luck with lung cancer than others.

9. Radon gas... I don't think many of you have done much research on it if you think it is nuclear tests that are spreading it around, and those who think it causes more lung-cancer than smoking. Radon is a naturally occuring by-product of the decay of Radium, a subtance NOT used in either nuclear power or nuclear bombs due to the fact that it isn't nearly as abundant, nor useful as uranium, and since it decays very quickly, it can't be used as a nuclear power source. plus, since radon is one of the heaviest of the radioactive gases, or any gas for that matter, and because of its relatively rapid decay time it doesn't travel very far. However, radon is still a health issue. Why? because it can be found just about anywhere there is Uranium, which many of you probably didn't know, is much, much more common than you think. Uranium is found naturally is small amounts in many different kinds of rocks and soils. Radium is found almost exclusively in Uranium deposits, so any rock that contains any amount of uranium probably contains a very small amount of radium, and therefor, Radon. However, although radon can be found in a lot of places, the level of it has to go above a certain point for it to become a considerable danger, and it only goes above that level in certain places. The bulk of deaths caused by radon are from many years of exposure to it, epecially in basements since radon acummulates in lower areas due to it's weight, and in any place whith a soil or rock content known to have naturally occuring radioactive compounds, such as Cornwall in the United Kingdom. Plus the majority of deaths caused by this are from uranium miners, who have exposure to it on a daily basis. But for most, radon isn't a problem. (This really didn't have anything to do with tobacco, but I wanted to shed some light on the subject, and the reason why it definately is NOT the leading cause of lung cancer).

10. (This is the last one, I promise). This last one doesn't have much to do with tobacco but I think it needs to be said. Corporations have always tried to hide dangerous after-effects of their products from the consumer. This can be said especially with the chemical corporations. I truly believe that unsafe release of chemicals by chemical plants is a major problem in today's society. So I encourage you, help do something about it. Write your congressman. Hold a rally. Gather some people and put some pressure on the government to look more into the issue. After all the chemical companies have to know SOME kind of alternative. (However let it be said that I still believe smoking kills, and that smoking still is the leading cause of lung cancer).

Final Note: Much of what i said goes against what you guys have been saying. If you have a complaint or something to challenge what I said, then post it. Prove me wrong. Go for it. But I ask that you try to do it with civility, and not act like an ass-hat internet troll who opens a sentence with THAT'S BULLSHIT!

Much Obliged,

WOOPS: Seems I made a few errors on my section describing radon. (In my last post. I.E. the post just before this.)
1. Uranium miners take a large part of the deaths, but not the MAJORITY like I had said.
2. I also underestimated the amount of radon on the planet. Although radium is quite rare in large quantities, it is rather common in very small quantities in a variety of soils and rock. My bad. So radon can actually be found in many, many places.

My apologies. Research errors. But I still stick to my views that radon causes less lung cancer than smoking. And to the fact that it isn't spread by nuclear testing/power. But still "my bad".

Tobacco might not be so bad, but the added chemicals in cigarettes and filters are deadly and highly addictive. And I'm a smoker.

Right. I try and smoke tobacco with less additives. Another thing to think about is, the cig. paper.

If you think about it you're smoking paper, which can't be good.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 394958

Thomas Edison also believed it was the paper that was bad for the lungs, not the tobacco. The paper is what makes cigarettes stink to non-smokers, not the tobacco. Pure tobacco burns clean without a bad smell. I'm a non-smoker, but I tried cigarettes for a few months. I never inhaled, so it was easy to quit.

The ancient medicinal plant tobacco (in use by humans for 4,000 years) is the Scapegoat used by the Chemical and Oil industries.

-- Toxic pollution causes cancer. BUT what do you hear, drilled into your brains daily? Tobacco.

-- Why is it, we have this huge increase in lung cancer and other cancers, EXACTLY coinciding with the Industrial Revolution??

--GOOGLE "Cover up chemical industry"

A little common sense will tell you what happens when you breath in Diesel, Car exhaust fumes and Factory fumes, every single day, 7 days a week, all year long. For years on end.

-- WHY is lung cancer on the rise, with smokers AND non-smokers, even tho thousands and thousands of people who listen to the propaganda, are quitting ??

-- Ask any smoker if he gets a lot of colds a year. They'll answer not that many.

Ask a non-smoker. They'll answer they get a lot.

--Historically, the California Desert indians smoked tobacco, to cure a cold.
[link to academic.udayton.edu]

-- Could it be the smokers cough, is tobacco causing the lungs to expel the effects of pollution?

-- FINALLY here's the clincher. WHEN has the Mass Media EVER TOLD YOU THE TRUTH ???????
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 394958

Nicotine itself might not be too harmful, but by the time you add in 200+ additives, chemicals, carcinogens, and pollutants, there is no way it's healthy. The rise in lung cancer is attributable to environmental pollution--including second-hand smoke!

The problem is how it makes you and your surroundings look and smell.

Then there is:

The digging in the trash for a butt at 3am like some kind of starving rodent. Having to stop on road trips and stand outside in a fucking blizzard just to take a couple of drags. Scrubbing your fingers with steel wool and comet to get rid of nicotine stains. Taking your $200 slacks to the cleaners and asking them if they can fix a burn hole in the crotch. Taking your car in to see if they can fix a burn hole in the leather seat under your crotch. Swerving in traffic and risking your life and other's while your crotch is fucking on fire....

It might be healthy but its not worth it.

Not worth it.
Most of the food your eat are not worth it, besides many being not good for you and making you look ugly as a result, and eve when you are stuffing yourself with it.

And then you go and shit with that stuff---the worse you eat the nastier is your crap...
It's UGLY, man.

hmmm i definitely think there is something to this.

normally after a night of drinking and smoking i feel awful.

though a couple weeks ago (i pretty much quit now), i bought some backwoods cigars and smoke those. inhaled very little. i felt great the next day. i think they use some sort of toxic chemicals as fertilizers for one that the tobacco leaves absorb, plus god knows whatever else they do to it.
