That means that if your neighbor, your brother strikes you, whether that means you lose face, become insulted, are deeply offended, well, just offer the other cheek as well. "See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ." (Colossians 2:8) |

So if someone comes up to a Christian and wants to pick a fight and starts punching him or her, then Christians are not allowed to fight back? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 396099 United Kingdom 03/20/2008 09:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The basic message of christianity is an invitation to expand the 'self' to encompass all of humanity - hence the golden rule, 'turning the other cheek' is to choose, not to buy into - someone elses vision of the 'self' - to choose to offer them an alternative way of being - by example. It was never intended I suppose as a suicide pact though. |

However, should they attack... There is no place within the texts of the bible that states that you cannot defend yourself. However, it is important to use discretion. Do not attack first and when you retaliate, use only enough force to subjugate the attacker. Then leave it be, forgive and forget. |

He was illustrating how to go beyond the law to become more forgiving than what was provided for by "the law". Remember, "the law" was given to a particular country in a particular time period - it was Israel's civil and criminal code. That no longer exists. The teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount is how do we deal with one another on a personal basis, not how does one country deal with one another. They are two entirely different issues. On the 'country to country' ideas of Jesus, I would recommend the Book of Revelation, Amos, Jeremiah, Zechariah type passages of the Bible. "See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ." (Colossians 2:8) |
