Anyone know the context of turning the other cheek when someone strikes you? Does the Bible teach self defense?

When Jesus gave this sermon, he was talking about how to deal with those in your life, ie. your neighbor.

That means that if your neighbor, your brother strikes you, whether that means you lose face, become insulted, are deeply offended, well, just offer the other cheek as well.

it means that jesus was a fraud
his teachings are totally contrary to the original torah that god gave to his people
god said : an eye for an eye
and israel still obey and abides by this rule
jesus came around and changed the rule completely to : turn the other cheak:
think bout this :
if god knows best and gives you a rule, why does he need to change it after 4000 years
and why send someone else to tell us that? why could he not have amended the `rules himself?

Don't confuse the rules of men with the wishes and instructions from God. A great deal was mistranslated, misunderstood etc etc...

Re: Jesus said to turn the other cheek. What's does that mean???
The basic message of christianity is an invitation to expand the 'self' to encompass all of humanity - hence the golden rule, 'turning the other cheek' is to choose, not to buy into - someone elses vision of the 'self' - to choose to offer them an alternative way of being - by example. It was never intended I suppose as a suicide pact though.

Correct. However, Jesus gave the Apostles truth, mercy and wisdom and trained them in how to respond and communicate.

5:38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
5:39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
5:40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
5:41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
5:42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

In Point, walk away from a fight if you can. Do not be the aggressor either and deliberately escalate things.

However, should they attack...

There is no place within the texts of the bible that states that you cannot defend yourself. However, it is important to use discretion.

Do not attack first and when you retaliate, use only enough force to subjugate the attacker. Then leave it be, forgive and forget.

we can defend ourselves and our family an property. And lots of people in the old testament killed and god used them anyway. In the OT gods prophets could kill the enemy. But in the new testament Jesus said to turn the other cheek a go to the cross even like a lamb to the slaughter.jesus said there is no greater love than to lay down your life for your friends.jesus died a martyr for the world.everyody dont have the guts to do martyrdom.unless your a muslim lol their idea of martyrdom is to kill as many innocent people as you can while commiting suicide lol

Jesus never said that eye for an eye was bogus.

He was illustrating how to go beyond the law to become more forgiving than what was provided for by "the law".

Remember, "the law" was given to a particular country in a particular time period - it was Israel's civil and criminal code. That no longer exists.

The teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount is how do we deal with one another on a personal basis, not how does one country deal with one another. They are two entirely different issues.

On the 'country to country' ideas of Jesus, I would recommend the Book of Revelation, Amos, Jeremiah, Zechariah type passages of the Bible.
"See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ." (Colossians 2:8)
