Why on earth would someone take the time to invent something that crashes the computers of innocent people? I mean do they get kudos from the industry, awards or something? Is there an 'Oscars" for virus inventors?I know these supertech geniuses are weird but WTF would they do that for? A Warning (OP) User ID: 401108 United States 03/27/2008 11:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ****UPDATE**** I was reading some white dove thread? While my buddy FINALLY called. I have no idea what time it is in India but its really late here, 11:15pm he called, just got done grilling him with questions. Here's the rundown folks. This is a new threat, a completely new type of virus that their labs have never seen before. Its (and I quote) "polymorphic" and contains all of the following. (Below are some of the notes I took while on the phone.) A rootkit An internal botnet network A backdoor An internal clock? (not sure what this means really) An internal port scanner An internal assembly compiler/decompiler Internal compression algorithms Multiple unknown (as of yet) object libraries Internal security of some kind An advanced AI engine to detect attempts to remove it It also attacks all known anti-virus programs attempting to disable/remove them. A Cross platform compiler? (I'm not sure what this is either but he says it allows the program to be executed on Linux and Windows systems) And as I said, my buddy says its polymorphic, according to him that means the code itself is constantly changing, encrypting itself and its pattern of recognition. They have no way to make a virus signature yet, and are at a loss for words. I guess this is making its way all the way up the corporate ladder, its big news, but not public yet. He says they have never seen anything like this before, they are calling it a "Super Virus". Sounds fitting to me. I also asked him how they came across the virus. He said it came from an infected laptop that they brought in to test. But would not say what the source of the laptop was. I'm guessing he knows what the source is but can't tell me. I begged him, pleaded, I knew the GLPers here would think this story was bullshit if I couldn't find out where it came from but he wouldn't tell me, so I'm sorry all... He said he spent 2 hours sleeping on a cot in the hallway and was taking a break before work again, I feel bad that he didn't even get to go home. They are still going to continue working on this virus and hopefully make sure it doesn't get released into the open. so I asked him, and on this question he said there was no doubt. I said "What happens if this thing is released onto the Internet" he said "What Internet?" I said "You're joking right? You work on the Internet all day long." He said "No joke, I literally mean What Internet, as in there won't be an Internet if this thing gets loose. They called the government on this, its about to be classified." I thought he's joking but no, he's dead serious, I've never heard him sound so nervous. In the background they're calling for him again and he says he has to go reformat some more computers and run some more tests. I asked him to call me back again, or email me, or IM me. Whew. Glad I got that all out, I'm a little nervous even typing it all, I hope someone else who knows more can shed some light on what I typed down. And no this is not BS, this guy is on the line. He makes more in a month then I do in a year, and McAfee recruited him. |
A Warning (OP) User ID: 401108 United States 03/28/2008 12:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I re-read what I typed and I forgot one thing that I have in my notes here on the second to last page. (Sorry I skipped over this part) My buddy also said this virus has an initial size of less than 200K but grows rapidly as soon as it infects a host computer. He said they took one 200k file off an infected computer and put it onto a "Clean Machine" within a small network lan, and it infected the entire lan within seconds. Firewalls/routers did not have an affect. It uses some kind of exploit. |

Hanged Man User ID: 151462 United States 03/28/2008 12:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Interesting. So, if this gets out, what's to stop it from being just as bad in a few weeks, years? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 401120 United States 03/28/2008 12:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Very interesting stuff, OP. Thanks for posting. And thanks to the other person for a bit of confirmation. Are you familiar with the Storm botnet? I was just reading up on that and how it infected many military computers: "What Storm demonstrated, however, was how a Cyber War operation could quickly build a large botnet. Such a network could be used as a military weapon, for at least a few weeks, until security software removed most of the zombie software. Storm, however, was used mainly for the usual Internet criminal scams. But it could have been used as a weapon, and future networks like Storm might be put to more sinister uses." [link to geekdeep.blogspot.com] Could you imagine what an AI computer virus could do? I'd imagine that triggering WWIII would not be out of the question one bit. Hello Skynet. AI has been around since the 60s. I'm sure the technology is far more advanced than the public realizes or is informed about. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 346985 United States 03/28/2008 01:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | That's what backups are fore. You can always regress back. Pretty smart code if it can over ride super users permissions. Has to figure out the locations of the boot code and modify it as well. Has to get in the memory, then download its self. Seems to me they could dissassemble the code - you can write a special program to download portions of the memory that it infected.....Then dissassemble the code to see what it is doing... Sounds like a challenge! Everything is assembly langauge eventually. Guess I've been lucky, to have the knowledge from the late 70's till now dealing with code, hardware designs ect..... the hardest thing ( at least for me) was understanding the cache hit and miss circuits. They'll figure it out. BTW, if it was so special, they would have sent it here for the experts to work on, not 2nd class India. |

The "company" announced it covertly writes software for the U.S. government's information warfare programs, and warned the stolen virus can infect every computer on the Internet. "We are working around the clock," the publicity stunt continued. "We hope to have the NIA Anti-Virus up and running on February 15, 2001. It will be free and downloadable to the public. EVERY COMPUTER MUST BE EQUIPPED TO STOP THIS VIRUS!" It then provided a link to a website "for details." |

I ran into a rootkit that was adding data or something to all of my security software that wouldn't let it load. I had to download ice sword and some other rootkit detector stuff to find it. Also it was important to change the extensions of the .exe files in the .rar's before I extracted them to .bak files, then after extracted make them read-only so that the hldrrr.exe wouldn't fuck with them. I don't know dogshit about computers, comparatively and was still able to negotiate my way through an episode, I don't think any virus is the end of the world. Stay away from p2p cracks and stuff, that's where a lot of the bullshit starts. |

We were chatting online and then he called me here in the states. Bangalore, thats in India for you folks who don't know. He says (and I quote) "They're testing a new computer virus, the thing is indescribable, it appears to be sentient." He went on to say that this thing keeps breaking lose onto their local testing network. That they've already had to re-format a dozen machines multiple times. The guys working with the virus don't even know where it came from! My friend works at a major security company that deals with anti-virus software so it is his job to test these kinds of things. I can't tell you the company but I can assure you most of us have heard of it before. True, however if it downloads gigabytes of components the virus isn't stealthy - the simplest network sniffers will show the spikes. Every virus maker knows that a good virus must be stealthy (thus also as small as possible) to be distributable. |
