I went for a high altitude treck in the Rockies and wanted the oxygen boost. Last week I went in for my first physical in two years. My last check-up had some definate room for improvement... cholesteral a bit high, low sodium(not good), feeling tired, etc. This time, perfect health. Everything absolutely top drawer! The only change in my routine- SPIRULINA. :) |

United States 3/27/2008 5:26 PM | | Re: Anyone have any experience with spirulina? | Quote | I recently started to make a drink to chelate heavy metals, by taking one bunch of cilantro, one bunch dandelion, blend, strain, divide into three jars. 3 x a day, I add 2 tablespoons chlorella, and 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast, shake and drink.
I do notice a sense of well being form this.
The combo is said to be synergistic, and the best plan is 6 months the really kick into high gear, but I noticed right away; maybe due to being polluted, I don't know.
Chlorella is somewhat like Spiralina, I think.
I buy a kg of the Jarrow brand at Iherb.com for $57(?)
People try to talk this stuff down, but in my veiw, it is one of the best things I've ever done.
I also dry the pulp of the cil/dan in the oven, grind, and add it back in the drink along with ground kelp.
The kelp has iodine, which displaces mercury, and the drink chelates it out.
I am starting to see the importance of detoxing heavy metals.
My health is starting to improve and stay consistent. |

Plain spirulina can be a little nasty tasting, but the energizing effects of its nutrients can be felt shortly after dosing. It contains all of the essential amino acids, which makes it a primo supplement to toss in yer gullet. |

Yup...I get the powdered Spiru-Tein from the Vitamin Shoppe in the 2 pound can (yummy Strawberry). Its got non-GMO soy base and 18 amino acids. I can notice a difference in my energy level almost immediately, and its a good boost at lunchtime. |

Canada 3/27/2008 6:32 PM | | Re: Anyone have any experience with spirulina? | Quote | I started eating a tablespoon of spirulina in a frozen fruit breakfast shake every morning...it was the only thing that helped me through having mono. But 6 years later, I still couldn't drink alcohol without getting very sleepy and having my glands on my neck swell up a bit.
I switched to chlorella after hearing that it's a better detoxer and Wow! I had forgotten what normal feels like. I had a drink 3 days after having switched algae and I felt completely normal afterwards. I was amazed. I could have had another drink if I had wanted to. The chlorella must have detoxed my liver or something.
Algae has been a godsend to me and I highly recommend it to everyone. (Chlorella tastes a bit better than spirulina, though both taste like ocean vegetation!) |

Any one got any ideas for how to make it more palatable? |

United States 3/28/2008 11:08 AM | | Re: Anyone have any experience with spirulina? | Quote | The thing about aquatic pond scums like spirulina and blue-green algae is that some variants have psychoactive properties that make you feel better, but this is narcotic not nutritive, and those are NOT the strains you will recieve if you buy. The ACTUAL nutrients are cheaper from stuff like parsley and brussel sprouts and spinach.
BTW barley sprouts have a chemical resembling Peyote, it's the same game, the advocates are deluded by how they feel. |

Algae is a whole food...you aren't eating just the roots of a plant or the leaves. A lot of supplements extract a vitamin or a component believed to be healthy and then cram them into hard to digest tablets. Often what is good in a plant is good because it is working together with other things present in the plant and when you extract a vitamin, it underperforms. This is why some studies show, for example, vitamin E can be detrimental to your health, but you could eat all the E you can find in foods with naturally high levels of it.
If you want high performance supplements, algae (chlorella and spirulina) is some of the best around. Chlorella is full of protein and amino acids, and even iodine (which people don't get enough of): Vitamin C, pro-vitamin A (B-carotene), thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), pyridoxine (B6), niacin, pantothenic acid, folic acid, Vitamin B12, biotin, choline, Vitamin K, lipoic acid, and inositol. Minerals in Chlorella pyrenoidosa include: phosphorus, calcium, zinc, iodine, magnesium, iron, and copper.
Eat it! Be healthy! (But also eat your parsley, brussel sprouts and spinach!) |
