How to keep garlic & potatoes from sprouting?
Does anyone have any good ideas on how to keep garlic and potatoes from sprouting? Lately It seems that all my garlic and potatoes are sprouting faster than they normally do. I can't eat them fast enough to keep up. I've seen those big braided rows of garlic that people keep, and I don't understand how they keep them from sprouting!

Should I make absolutely sure that they are not getting ANY sunlight?
(I think the cabinet I keep them in leaks sunlight)

Keep them in the fridge? I've never kept potatoes in the fridge, but if it will keep longer then I will do that.

Any suggestions?

Yeah, I'd like to know also. I would imagine that keeping garlic in the fridge would inhibit growth to prevent sprouting, but idk, I'm probably wrong.

Keep them dark, cool and aerated. I think a fridge may accumulate too much moisture if kept there for long.

Btw, I only have experience with potatoes.

Re: How to keep garlic & potatoes from sprouting?
I keep potatoes in boxes of sawdust, which wicks-away the moisture, and I keep the boxes in cool, dark storage. Even so, they eventually sprout, and I think they'll do so under any conditions. They're hard-wired to sprout. You just have to keep rotating in fresh potatoes, and save the sprouted ones for planting.

If you're off-grid (or trying to get off) and can't rotate fresh potatoes in, the only recourse I know is to keep growing them into the winter, heavily cloched or in a greenhouse. Or, container grow them and bring them into a sunroom at freeze time.

Regarding garlic, seems that potato-like storage conditions are good, but don't let the storage be too dry, or else it'll dry out the garlic.

I use terracotta for my garlic..

They make terracotta for potatoes also, but I just keep mine in a wrought iron basket on counter.. I use them before they sprout eyes usually.

Re: How to keep garlic & potatoes from sprouting?
I usually buy potatoes in 10 lb bags. (10 lb bags are often on sale and cheaper than 5 lb)

I keep them in a net bag in the vegetable crisper drawer in the fridge. They keep well for two or three months. They never sprout, but after a while they do start to dry out and shrivel up.

That's when it's time to make veggie soup, stew or potato soup & use them up.

I keep onions the same way.

How is that mean? Do the apples do the opposite? Do they make them sprout or something?

how about using an old or mini refrigerator turned down to the highest temp setting, used as a cold storage area for homes that lack root cellars

Re: How to keep garlic & potatoes from sprouting?
You don't.

Potatoes are tubers - roots. They are the "seed" of new potatoes and after X amount of time they will sprout and grow.

Garlic (and onion) are bulbs, again they are the "seed" of their kind and after x amount of time will sprout and grow.

The cabinet I keep them in doesn't close all the way if I'm not paying attention. I think quite a bit of sunlight gets in. Do you think that is my main problem? I am not storing them in a dark enough place?

Re: How to keep garlic & potatoes from sprouting?
I use my garlic fairly quickly in 2 ways... cut it up and put it in containers in the freezer, do this for onions also. Then when you want to use it it's immediately ready and little prep for what you want. I also make infused oils... use olive oil as it doesn't go bad. take some garlic and rosemary (whatever you like) cook a number of minutes in the oil until garlic get that "glassy" look. Place in corked bottle, and keep a number of months.

potatoes I keep in dark storage until they get the eyes, and once they get them bad enough I stick them in the ground outside. Don't need much room for a new plant.
