Truckers Strike at Port of Tampa
HERALD STAFF REPORT
About 70 semi trucks are lined up at the Port of Tampa in protest today against high diesel prices.
Tampa police officers are working to keep traffic flowing normally near the port as the trucks are lined up on 22nd Street just before the causeway bridge.
"We got wind of it yesterday," said Lt. Doug Dodson, spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol in Manatee County.
One Canadian trucker, who was driving his rig through Manatee County this morning and stopped at the Shell gas station at the Interstate 75 and State Road 64 interchange, said he got wind of the protest Monday. "Its mainly over the price of fuel, it has gotten so sky high," he said. "Many owner/operators have just about gone face down."
According to the Associated Press, truckers around the country have been talking about a protest or strike as high diesel prices and low freight rates have pushed an increasing number of truckers into bankruptcy.
Fuel prices in Pennsylvania, where truckers staged a protest at the state capital on Monday, averaged $4.33 a gallon for diesel on Monday, compared to $2.84 a year ago.
If the planned traffic slowdowns on the interstate materialize, Dodson said troopers could issue tickets.
He said violations could be issued for hindering traffic or creating an unsafe traffic condition.

A protest by some truck drivers on the Stevenson Expressway this morning ended with the truckers being ticketed by state police and having to undergo inspections of their rigs.
The truckers stopped in traffic at Damen Aveune on the Stevenson Tuesday morning, according to an Illinois State Police sergeant. The protest ended about 9:30 a.m. and traffic was moving through the area again, the sergeant said.
The trucks are stopped again, but this time by state police, who are issuing citations and conducting inspections of the trucks, the sergeant said.

By Gene Byrd
Apr 1, 2008
Many truck drivers have stayed true to their word and have decided to pull their trucks off of the roads of America for at least one day, April 1, and have decided to have a trucker's strike on the first Tuesday in April. It is not yet clear what impact it will have on any businesses, or how many truck drivers have decided to join in.
Independent owner-operators are fed up with rising fuel prices and they are trying only to send a message as they cannot afford to stay off the roads for very long or they will go out of business altogether. They are facing an uphill battle and it is a nice gesture, but it is unclear what they will accomplish.
Record high diesel prices are the issue. At over four dollars a gallon they are putting a tremendous burden on the bottom line for those that run their businesses of moving freight over the road. They have to make the payments to fill up, and at times reports have claimed it is twelve hundred dollars just for one fill up. Life is expensive at the pump for all of us that just buy gas for our cars, but diesel is more expensive per gallon for truck drivers and many rigs only get about five miles per gallon.
Many drivers spend around $3,000 per month at the pump according to one report. There are 350,000 independent drivers in the US and there were predictions that there would be thousands that would join in and many have claimed support in spirit, but it is still unclear what impact, if any, this will even have.

The strike is just for one day. The writer's strike was for half a year. It must not be serious for the truckers.
Are you fucking stupid? What does the "writer's strike" have to do with your life specifically? Can you not eat for two weeks.
It's not just food, it's everything.
Yes, but his point is that the writers nerves are tougher than the truckers.
We will know April 2nd (well really night time on the 1st) when everyone carries on business as usual.
If the truckers were real, they would barricade borders & ports keeping out illegals & communist (chinese) goods.
But the wont. Quoting: LouisWinthorpeIII
its not that they dont have the nerve its that they/we have family to feed everyone is hollering its gonna make the prices go up but are prices are already higher we can barely pay bills and put food on the table and the independent drivers dont have a say in the cost of anything they know ahead of time how much but again they have to take what they can get we have familys to feed |

 | | Re: TRUCKER STRIKE April 1ST 2008 | Quote | Great post... I know how hard it is for the truckers these days. I own an independent finance company that makes loans to owner-operators who need cash quick. They have big payments with us, but usually are reliable, trustworthy, and always do their best to pay back the loans. In the last 3 months are company is losing money badly. Truckers who were never late for two years are suddenly 90+ days past due. We know they want to pay, but theres just nothing left after fuel and ins. costs. |
| hillside3266 User ID: 405845 4/1/2008 7:23 PM | | Re: TRUCKER STRIKE April 1ST 2008 | Quote | That is my point exactly, Calibob, it is effecting us all. We have found ourselves struggling to keep our heads above water this year, when in the past, we have been able to maintain our cost of living. I am sorry to hear that you, who very kindly lend a hand to truckers financially, are feeling the crunch as well. For those who feel that truckers are "just whining and complaining", I believe that most truck drivers truly enjoy their job. If your "employer" told you that you were going to work for half of the pay you did last year at a job you have always enjoyed, you would "whine and complain" as well. Thanks for your understanding in this very difficult time |
| Steve-Bradenton User ID: 405894 4/1/2008 7:48 PM | | Re: TRUCKER STRIKE April 1ST 2008 | Quote | I am a former OTR Trucker. I gave it up a few years ago as I was tired of all of the idiots calling themselves "owner operators" that would haul cheap freight just to "pay for the fuel". That is such a retard mentality, and is the root cause of the situation we are now in. WAKE UP!!! Never under any circumstances haul cheap freight! NEVER!! Let the grass grow up around that shit! Common sense applies here. Supply and demand. If nobody hauls the cheap freight, there will be no cheap freight. Very simple. Most owner operators really have no idea what the REAL cost is of moving that rig down the road is. What is your per mile cost? Really? Are you sure? What is your time worth? Are you driving for less as an owner operator than you could make as a company driver? Most likely. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!
Although I wish you all the best of luck, as in the past, this strike will make little, if any impact on the real issues. Independent operators are the minority and represent only about 12% of the total trucking industry. So the other 88% are the companies like Swift, JB HUNT, etc still out there hauling that $1/mile crap.
Massive education is the key, but truckers are overall too stupid to get it. Greed and stupidity are a deadly combination.
Educate yourselves, then organize. Really organize the way the Teamsters did long ago. Violence ensues. People go to jail. People die. Then, and only then do you get real change.
Think about it. |
