In fact the database is the ship in need of a broadside.

The real purpose was to use for body bags to seal decomposing bodies.
After Katrina in New Orleans, people needed body bags. They don't tell you about the stacks of bodies in the FEMA distribution center where shipments of bottled water were being received, along with other goods, like roof tarps. |

Possibly, communications will be the first to come back, and then we'll love our geeks. |

i wonder how much effect Y2K preparedness had on the economy? i know somethings got pretty hard to come by in the final months
this is so funny though, as the FEMA guidelines tell us to prepare for a week or so of hard times, anymore than that is "hoarding", and illegal
cracks me up |

The Yuppies think they need a GPS unit and Satellite Phone.
but if you have a yaesu ft857d you can
Shit, a few low flying military jets just buzzed me, this never happens here... be back...
As I type this, I'm listening to my Yaesu VX7-R clipped onto my belt. It's a neat little radio and is easily modified for very wide band transmission...the thing will even pick up shortwave freqs...although not great reception with the rubber ducky antenna... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 405868
Yeah, VX6r here, mine is opened, and I got an MFJ-1712s telescopic and love it on shortwave and medium wave. Also when extended, it out preforms the duck on 2 meters and MURS... The FRS band proved good too... It is only 4 to 5 inches collasped...
The Ft-857-D Mobile Base is really amazing, got mine running on solar power, can transmit anywhere. I have a Imax and MFJ-945-e mobile tuner and I can tune 20, 17, 15, 12, 11, 10, 6, meters with it.
On VHF/UHF I have a Jetstream LTB-1 for 2 and 440... It's wide banded enough to cover everything else too... |

That's my next purchase....I'll check out the FT-857-D...I'm doing the solar panel thing also. I set up a desk with a deep cycle battery and have a float/trickle charger to maintain it when the sun isn't shining. Used this power panel to run all the stuff like SW receivers, xmitters, scanners, TV's etc:

We're talking about the latest "do everything" walkie talkies...with mods, they can transmit over a huge range of frequencies..as well as the normal stuff, like talking to FRS's, etc. It will even transmit over the police bands....not that I would do that..hhe

Excellent peak oil vid finally up on Google Video
THE END OF SUBURBIA: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of The American Dream
"We're literally stuck up a cul-de-sac in a cement SUV without a fill-up" - James Howard Kunstler
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 324511
Thanks for posting this video. I now understand what is meant by peak oil.
Here I thought we were being charged outrageous fees at the pumps because oil companies wanted to make large profits and “they” decided not to pump more oil to increase demand.
Had no idea they COULDN’T pump more because we’ve reached the peak and in five or more years will show America will NOT receive as much oil as we currently need to survive our current life style.
Video suggests:
1. Live more locally. Reduce need to drive to work, etc.
2. We have technology to work from home – this might be possible to reduce gas cost.
3. New Urbanism is popping up. Walkable community living like in the old days.
4. Local communities will need to create their own solar and bio diesel resources locally if our economy is going to survive.
5. Grow food close to towns we live in.
6. Local and regional interdependency. |

You've got an awesome set-up! Mine is similar, but a little more humble....I just bought an Icom R7100 used recently. It's an older, but very fine comm receiver..I just interfaced it to the pc.
I bought that MFJ antenna...at that price, you can't beat it.. |

Yes, The EMP Tube back up, I've always liked the old swan 350, but the mil spec yeasu might survive. Best to be safe so I'll be looking for a vhf fm tubeed unit too. |

A quick and dirty little trick I do is to store at least SOME of my radios in a galvanized steel garbage can after removing their antennas....not a true Faraday shield, but I suspect it should work..Hope we never find out! |

The Icom R-7100 is an excellent choice, especially for mil coms and utility. I mostly use the Pan RF-4800 for coms, I use it with a stand alone multi-reader from MBA. and the dx-200 dx-300 units for bx listening. The Bearcat trunk-tracker is my life line though, that and the night vision camera.... Gotta know whats going on around me at all times...

Not putting YOU on the spot exactly but since you've 'been waiting for this my whole life', perhaps that has been sufficient time to be able to articulate what has antagozied you and what you'd like to see developing as a remedy for it.
