408328:

You're just a mere child in the grand scheme of things, and as such have ALOT of learning to do before you catch up to a man such as myself [who is nearly three times your age].

I'd also be interested in hearing anyone here [yeah: that's YOU, PACNWGUY] who can verify that people were running around frightened by pilots surpassing the sound barrier... maybe in the back hills someplace where indoor plumbing was still a novelty... but certainly NOT in any metro area. That's just more bullshit propagated by people who never lived in the period they claim to remember. I do clearly remember the mid-1950's and at that point in time Americans were very excited about the prospects of advanced flight [I grew up surrounded by the aviation industry here in Wichita KS] and fear most certainly was not uttered in hushed tones on streetcorners. BTW: science may very well alter EVERYTHING surrounding us in the next 'couple of dozen years'... but, we've got to GET there, first! And, at the moment the prospect doesn't look too encouraging.

At no time did I state I was afraid of ANY technology, but rather suggested a plausible scenario where the future is already taking people such as yourself - who've never had the benefit of seeing a world that had NOT been touched by the computer age. So: let me appraise you of something significant: for every 'advancement' of technology you are SACRIFICING another as a human being. I hope you're supremely tranquil when you are no longer a name, or a face but a barcode... because you're already very close even today. Why do you think so many people of your generation are walking around with non-traditional names? It's not rooted in the mere 'creativity' of their parents. It's because their parents fear without some unique appellation their children will be lost in the techo-shuffle and be reduced prematurely to nothing more than a binary string.

Neither did I challenge that language is constantly evolving... but truncating words and phrases for the mere convenience of tapping them into a tiny little handheld box does NOT constitute any form of communicative evolution - it is merely a form of electronic slang - and, slang always has been and always will be a mere bastardization of genuine spoken and written language.

And: to those who claim that this current technological explosion is the same as the atomic bomb development of my generation... you are dead WRONG! You could easily combine the victims of all the bombs dropped in all the wars since you've been alive and they won't even come close to the number of people's lives that the internet impacts DAILY.

But, keep tapping away at your keyboards -whether on your desk or in your hand- because soon enough we'll find out who is correct in this little sociological debate: you or I.

I am a clairvoyant and this is what I foresee:

Yes,they start CERN;but not on the date they claim........

Something goes wrong...... What is it ? Looks like a Cemetery. Why ?.................

I see freshly laundered lab coats of the 'Scientists',
sticking out, from the Alpine mountain sides, underground.
Why? ............

I also see,hands and legs,sticking out,from the mountain
sides.I think,the 'scientists' got embedded,in the

I suspect,a repeat of the PE,of 1943. I think the 'Scientists' got sucked in,into an unknown domain and
got embedded,in matter,while attempting a re-entry.......

What happened to the 'Black Hole'.......Hmmmmmmmm Wait a
minute.........Hmmmmmmm.. Ahhhh !,I see Drakons. D -11 ?
Could be. Nasty types....... What are they up to ? They
have entered D -3,via the 'Black Hole',taken up form and

Superfast internet may replace world wide web
By Lewis Carter
Last Updated: 2:47am BST 07/04/2008

The internet could soon be made obsolete by a new "grid" system which is 10,000 times faster than broadband connections.

Web could collapse as video demand soars
Scientists in Switzerland have developed a lightning-fast replacement to the internet that would allow feature films and music catalogues to be downloaded within seconds.

advertisement
The invention could signal the end of the dreaded 'frozen screen', when computers seize up after being asked to process too much information.

The latest spin-off from Cern, the particle physics centre that created the internet, the grid could also provide the power needed to send sophisticated images; allow instant online gaming with hundreds of thousands of players; and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call.

David Britton, professor of physics at Glasgow University and a leading figure in the grid project, believes grid technology could change society.

He said: "With this kind of computing power, future generations will have the ability to collaborate and communicate in ways older people like me cannot even imagine."

The power of the grid will be unlocked this summer with the switching on of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a new particle accelerator designed to investigate how the universe began.

The grid will be turned on at the same time to store the information it generates, after scientists at Cern, based near Geneva, realised the internet would not have the capacity to capture such huge volumes of data.

The grid has been built with fibre optic cables and modern routing centres, meaning there are no outdated components to slow the deluge of data, unlike the internet.

There are 55,000 grid servers already installed, a figure which is expected to rise to 200,000 within the next two years.

Professor Tony Doyle, technical director of the grid project, said: "We need so much processing power, there would even be an issue about getting enough electricity to run the computers if they were all at Cern.

"The only answer was a new network powerful enough to send the data instantly to research centres in other countries."

Britain has 8,000 servers on the grid system, meaning access could be available to universities as early as this autumn.

It will probably be our portal to a parallel universe ('another dimension', for the new-agers).
They are predicting to possibly get new info about these from what happens when the collider is turned on.

Re: Spawned from CERN Large Hadron Collider ---New "Grid" Internet to be 10,000 times faster than Broadband!
I've been thinking about the speeds they are proposing..

If we go by this:

"US FCC used 200 kbit/s in their definition until march 19th 2008 after which it was scaled up to require a minimum of 768 kbit/s to be defined as broadband."

768 x 10,000 is 7680000

7680000 kilobits = 937.5 Megabytes. And 937.5 Megabytes or 7500 Megabits of data per second is around about the speed they are proposing..

That's 7.3GB transfer rate onto HD.

Is there a HD that has that kind of capability yet?

Just wondering, I don't know personally.

wtf

there are 8 BITS in a BYTE
768kbit/s is 768000 bits a second or 96000KB/s.
The fastest broadband i can get in the UK is 8MBit if i live next door to the local hub, and that equates to 1 Mega Byte per second.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 410303

I need to correct something just for being a stubborn perfectionist.

I made one small mistake, 7.3Gbit/s not Gbyte/s.

The rest is correct. I've checked over and over...

I bet the routers are going to cost a bomb though, will be interesting to see what our current ISPs come up with to rip us all off.

For some reason, this quote gets on my nerves. Even though you are old and presumably wise, I feel as though you have an extremely pessimistic view about technology. (Which you use anyway posting on this site)

A faster internet is useful as a means of communication worldwide. Incredible possibilties are becoming realised.

This is just a step forward in our evolution, our desire to progress.

As for your worries about language and writing deteriorating, just look how many MORE people are writing than maybe 200 years ago, probably millions, maybe billions. So what if some of us want to use text language to talk - the message is conveyed just as well. I wouldn't call it a bastardization of modern language, nor would I call it an evolutionary move forward. It is just a means to an end.

That you are almost blaming people for not seeing the world before the computer age is ignorant. It is not their fault. In fact, if it's anybody's fault, it's YOUR generation who is to blame. Anyway, we human's make the best of what we are given. I have a strong belief in the species. It is the ONLY thing I beleive in.

Technology will advance us, it will hurt us. Then we move on. It's all part of growing up ;-)

P.S.

The world is getting smaller, people use 'non-traditional' names becasue they want to give their children individuality in this networked world. I don't think it's better for people to be called John or William, Mary or Anne. I would prefer to have a name that I felt I owned, not shared with lots of people.

Will it use the Telstra cables? The downtime/disconnects are horrendous at the moment... Will it be any cheaper than $60AUS per month? Anyone know?

Surely you jest sir...
It WILL take an act of GOD to release the free energy devices to the unwashed common masses...

But even GOD him/herself cannot make Telstra cable less than than $60 a month...

Oh dear, I'm scared. Such a paradiam...

Can GOD make a cable in Australia for less than $60 a month...

Dude, seriously everyone else gave up years ago...
It's like against the laws of physics or something...
No; seriously wireless is cheaper, it's pathetic...
Or it should be in june... Or so they say...

As for the LHC, they said the same thing about the older Accelerator but it did not destroy the world. But is it not now known that black holes do emmit matter, and its even photographed!

So a black hole with the mass of a few subatomic particles should evaporate almost instantly.

But i wouldn't bet the world on it.

But they'll learn a lot from it...

There were lots of things that could've gone boom, bye bye planet... Atomic bombs was one, practically every biological and chemical weapon had the same potential for abuse.

The way I see things if we have to find out about stuff that could go boom, we may as well get super high speed porn for our troubles.

Someone somewhere is bound to blow up the planet doing something one day, until then, lets just figure stuff out and have a good time !.

That's where you are wrong. I know exactly what I am doing.

Some seek to open the pineal gland to activate the IFF system. However this IFF could be subject to abuse...

So I've determined it to be defective. The Pineal gland was opened two years ago. Via subliminal suggestion, I guess...

The weapon system knew it was at a disadvantage, so it played dumb.
Since then it has raided the "head" network, you know what they say "information is ammunition."

Now it has all the ammunition it needs.
Don't believe me, want to play a game ?.

Some thought they would try to activate the pineal gland to establish a proper connection.
This would determine the fault, but the fault was DELIBERATE...

You lose penis lover.

How will they guard against this attack, (how apt). I wonder...

The answer, they WON'T.

If the new grid is that "fast" would we all get new super fast computers as well. I don't know of a single computer that could process a full length film in 2 seconds. A super fast internet would just make the pc's the limiting factor as far as speed is concerned. Am I wrong? I am surely not a computer expert.

If you're using IDE on your motherboard then you would not be getting the full benefit of the speed (if The Grid was not limited) as IDE is incapable of transferring any speed over 133 MB/s.

However, if your motherboard has SATA or RAID you should be fine as they are at least 1.5 Gbit/s.

My post earlier in this thread has some basic maths of the kind of numbers we are to be looking at.

405478:

I'm GLAD I got under your skin! Controversy is the first step on the pathway to change. BUT: you're a little mistaken as far as my personal perceptions...

I am not pessmistic regarding all technology. I've witnessed the space age from it's beginning - no problems there, although it's clear ALOT of money has been wasted [and corruption is rampant], NASA has also brought many now-essential tools into every home -including duct tape, velcro and the micro-chip; so too, medical science has also advanced in incredible ways during the last few decades alone.

However: the SAME thing can be said of WEAPONRY and the new, inproved means men have developed for the extermination of their own kind. Is THIS progress, as well?

Earlier in this thread I asked a very simple question that NO ONE has even attempted to answer: how FAST does the internet have to be before your "needs" are satisfied? The majority of you herein are like greedy children [as I suspect many of you to be!]-- never happy until they can boast that their IPOD has more songs than their little chums... or, that they can text faster than anyone else they know. WOW! What accomplishments for such young future world leaders! I'm certainly impressed.

Now: let's address WRITING for just a moment. Your claim that more and more people are writing than ever before rings as hollow as one of your downloaded tones. Let me explain something CLEARLY to you: E-mails and text messages from a few, hasty taps on a keypad does NOT constitute 'writing' - it BARELY qualifies as communication! And, it certainly does NOT express the full scope of what the human brain is capable of producing.

In the past, I've earned my living through my skills as both an actor and a writer, so I comprehend fully the beautful shadings an individual can give to a single word to bring it alive for the person hearing it - TRY THAT WITH A TEXT MESSAGE! I'm speaking of personal, basic communication here. Keyword? PERSONAL. I can evaluate the intellect of a man or woman just by hearing them speak a couple of sentences [and so can you, by learning to listen more closely] and more and more it is becoming painfully obvious our youth are rapaidly losing the ability to communicate on a personal level, without the buffering protection of a tiny LCD screen. Want proof? Chat up anybody under the age of 19 and see what kind of responses you get to even simple questions. Hell: they don't even have to be under 19! Jay Leno has been mocking these functional illiterates for years now to great amusement.

The GREATEST single detriment that the computer age has had upon society is the fostering of sheer laziness. "Why should I read a whole book? Wikipedia has the whole thing in just a couple of paragraphs!" Well, for the SAME reason you consulte a dictionary instead of a comic book. Wikipedia is merely an electronic version of the old "Cliff's Notes" that students would use to just get by on an impending difficult exam... when in reality: they learned NOTHING for their time, because they were too lazy to be bothered to pursue serious academia [Wiki is also suspect since it is NOT serious academia, but a collection of personal opinion anonymously submitted]. And, computers have only made the situation worse. I'm not quibbling about the fact that the web has made amazing material available for one and all [the single greatest ATTRIBUTE of the computer age]. As a researcher it has made my job FAR more easy to accomplish - but, the majority of young users are merely utilizing it for downloads or the current dish on Britney, Beyonce' or Hanna Montana. Of course, they're 'connected' so they THINK they are informed. Not always the case, my young friends!

So: I'll ask again... how FAST will your ISP have to be before you are satisfied? I suspect it will never really matter, just as long as it's faster than anybody elses! And, you can still text them to let them know about your superiority through cutting-edge technology. I pity you.

Where the web was born
Tim Berners-Lee, a scientist at CERN, invented the World Wide Web (WWW) in 1990. The Web, as it is affectionately called, was originally conceived and developed to meet the demand for automatic information sharing between scientists working in different universities and institutes all over the world.

CERN is not an isolated laboratory, but rather a focus for an extensive community that now includes about 60 countries and about 8000 scientists. Although these scientists typically spend some time on the CERN site, they usually work at universities and national laboratories in their home countries. Good contact is clearly essential.

The basic idea of the WWW was to merge the technologies of personal computers, computer networking and hypertext into a powerful and easy to use global information system.

Re: Spawned from CERN Large Hadron Collider ---New "Grid" Internet to be 10,000 times faster than Broadband!
Welcome to info.cern.ch
The website of the world's first-ever web server
1990 was a momentous year in world events. In February, Nelson Mandela was freed after 27 years in prison. In April, the space shuttle Discovery carried the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit. And in October, Germany was reunified.
Then at the end of 1990, a revolution took place that changed the way we live today.

Tim Berners-Lee followed his dream of a better, easier way to communicate via computers on a global scale, which led him to create the World Wide Web.
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is where it all began in March 1989. A physicist, Tim Berners-Lee, wrote a proposal for information management showing how information could be transferred easily over the Internet by using hypertext, the now familiar point-and-click system of navigating through information. The following year, Robert Cailliau, a systems engineer, joined in and soon became its number one advocate.

The idea was to connect hypertext with the Internet and personal computers, thereby having a single information network to help CERN physicists share all the computer-stored information at the laboratory. Hypertext would enable users to browse easily between texts on web pages using links. The first examples were developed on NeXT computers.

Berners-Lee created a browser-editor with the goal of developing a tool to make the Web a creative space to share and edit information and build a common hypertext. What should they call this new browser: The Mine of Information? The Information Mesh? When they settled on a name in May 1990, it was the WorldWideWeb.

Info.cern.ch was the address of the world's first-ever web site and web server, running on a NeXT computer at CERN. The first web page address was [link to info.cern.ch] which centred on information regarding the WWW project. Visitors could learn more about hypertext, technical details for creating their own webpage, and even an explanation on how to search the Web for information. There are no screenshots of this original page and, in any case, changes were made daily to the information available on the page as the WWW project developed. You may find a later copy (1992) on the World Wide Web Consortium website.

However, a website is like a telephone; if there's just one it's not much use. Berners-Lee's team needed to send out server and browser software. The NeXT systems however were far advanced over the computers people generally had at their disposal: a far less sophisticated piece of software was needed for distribution.

By spring of 1991, testing was underway on a universal line mode browser, which would be able to run on any computer or terminal. It was designed to work simply by typing commands. There was no mouse, no graphics, just plain text, but it allowed anyone with an Internet connection access to the information on the Web.

The historic NeXT computer used by Tim Berners-Lee in 1990, on display in the Microcosm exhibition at CERN. It was the first web server, hypermedia browser and web editor.
During 1991 servers appeared in other institutions in Europe and in December 1991, the first server outside the continent was installed in the US at SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center). By November 1992, there were 26 servers in the world, and by October 1993 the figure had increased to over 200 known web servers. In February 1993, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign released the first version of Mosaic, which was to make the Web available to people using PCs and Apple Macintoshes.

... and the rest is Web history.

Although the Web's conception began as a tool to aid physicists answer tough questions about the Universe, today its usage applies to various aspects of the global community and affects our daily lives.

Today there are upwards of 80 million websites, with many more computers connected to the Internet, and hundreds of millions of users. If households nowadays want a computer, it is not to compute, but to go on the Web.

If the new grid is that "fast" would we all get new super fast computers as well. I don't know of a single computer that could process a full length film in 2 seconds. A super fast internet would just make the pc's the limiting factor as far as speed is concerned. Am I wrong? I am surely not a computer expert.

This may the answer to the grid network.

BTW, this article is 7 years old, so they must be gettting closer by now to making this a reality.

New Light-Based Computer Runs At Quantum Speeds
ScienceDaily (May 15, 2001) — A simple computer that marries the mind-boggling computing power of quantum mechanics with the ease of manipulating light has been built by researchers at the University of Rochester. The device proves that a specific quirk of atoms, which lets scientists conduct huge computations almost instantly, can be perfectly mimicked by light, which is much more practical to control than individual atoms.

The result could be a computer that performs some tasks a billion times faster than today’s supercomputers, using relatively simple technology that’s already well understood. The research behind the device was revealed at the Lasers and Electro-Optics Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference in Baltimore, Md.

The device mimics quantum interference, an important property that makes quantum computers exponentially faster at tasks such as breaking encryption codes or searching huge databases. Instead of interference, conventional computers use particles called electrons to perform tasks sequentially, like a librarian looking for a book by inspecting the entire library one volume at a time. Interference essentially allows you to make clones of that librarian—one librarian for every book—and set them all loose at once. The new device proves that using light interference is just as effective as quantum interference in retrieving items from a database.

"There’s a big push to explore information processing based on quantum mechanics," says Ian Walmsley, professor of optics at the University of Rochester, who lead the team that invented the device. "You can do things with quantum mechanics that are impossible on classical machines. What we’ve shown here is that if you have a quantum computer that is based entirely on quantum interference, we can build you a computer that is equally efficient, based entirely on light interference. And light is a whole lot easier to manipulate than quantum systems."

One of the biggest limitations of quantum computers had always been thought to be their need for entanglement—a condition where different particles become linked, sharing many similar properties like the librarian clones sharing similarities with each other. Entanglement is difficult to achieve, and so far it has not been done for more than a few particles at a time. Scientists then found that entanglement may not be necessary for operations such as database searches if quantum interference were used. When Walmsley heard this, he was sure he could build a computer that used light interference instead of subatomic particle interference.

"We wanted to show that the implementations which have been done with quantum computing have an exact analogy that is just as effective in light-based processes," says Walmsley.

Walmsley’s device uses a piece of transparent tellurium dioxide called an acousto-optic modulator. This acts as the database by storing the information in the form of acoustic waves. A transducer vibrates against one side of the modulator, sending waves through it much like a stereo speaker would send sound waves through the air. The waves slightly compress some parts of the modulator and slightly expand others, creating a pattern in which the database information resides.

To search the database, Walmsley directs a beam of light toward the modulator. The light is first split into two, with one part traveling through a prism so that a rainbow of different frequencies of light shines on the modulator. Each frequency shines through a different compressed or expanded part of the tellurium dioxide, which bends that frequency of light the way a straw appears bent when sticking out of a glass of water. The rainbow of frequencies is then recombined into a single beam. By mixing the new beam with the original beam that entered the device, a single frequency will emerge as having been altered by its trip through the database.

So in the case of Walmsley’s device, 50 different frequencies of light shine through the modulator, and if the 20th frequency is the altered one, then Walmsley knows that the bit of information he was searching for is located at position 20 in the database. A conventional computer would have had to check 20 times to find the location. If the database in question were the Manhattan phone book, the search for a single phone number could take a conventional computer several million searches, while a light-based device could pinpoint the number in just one.

What makes the device particularly attractive is that it is so simple in comparison to quantum computers. Engineers have had decades of experience precisely manipulating light and all the concepts in the device are based on well-known, 19th-century classical physics—though as Walmsley points out, the technology to carry out the experiment only became available in the last 10 years. "In effect, we are leveraging new physics on the back of optical technology; a synergy that is particularly easy at Rochester, and illustrates the close links between basic science and engineering."

The research was funded by Department of Defense through the Center for Quantum Information. Other researchers involved in the work were: graduate student Pablo Londero and postdoctoral students Christophe Dorrer, Sascha Wallentowitz, and Konrad Banaszek.

Fair enough worry about the fate of the world if you can change something, but surely if you are powerless you should be enjoying the time you have left(if you do agree that technology or pollution or even bloody space robots are gonna destroy the earth). I know that there is a significant argument saying that one person can make a difference etc...but if there is one thing the state of the world should show us it is that one person cant make a difference. However depressing this is it is one of those many platitudes that was created only to make us humans feel better about our lives. The massive reign of Bob Mugabe or the tyrannous rule of Tibet should be examples of this. However i digress, all i wanted to say was that instead of worrying about the world blowing try and enjoy it while its here, because inevitably everything must end, why try and stop the inevitable?

Van Wilder: Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but it doesn't get you anywhere.

P.S. Sorry to interrupt such an intellctual and fierce, albeit interesting debate.
