Bear in mind, a serious prion generating phase could render most mammalian life extinct in a few decades. Some proteinacious infectious particles are non-species specific, like "Mad Cow" BSE and its human form vCJD. Same protein.

Prions can survive decades in the soil, fires, autoclaves, and still be infectious.
