Re: substitute toothpaste ?
Baking soda mixed with 10% common table salt is an inexpensive and remarkably effective tooth paste. If you want to get fancy add some spearmint or peppermint extract to the mixture. Finish with a hydrogen peroxide gargle and swish around your mouth for 1 minute and you'll have a healthy mouth, and sparkling teeth without any of the poisonous flouride compounds and dehydrating ingredients that are in practically all commercial toothpastes. I'm a biochemist and nutritionist and have used this formula for years, same with clients who swear by it!!!

My Grandparents used to use Baking Soda and lemon juice. Made into a paste. But then again, they also cured athlete's foot by peeing on their feet!

Re: substitute toothpaste ?
The peroxide/baking soda shit works.

I swear my teeth whitened after just a week of using it.

I have read, however, that the reason for the teeth whitening using this mixture is that the baking soda is destroying the enamels. :'(

Excerpts:

Natural Tooth Brushing

"Since tooth brushing is the most basic process in oral care, it’s a good place to start your natural tooth and gum care program. Traditional peoples the world over use natural tooth brushes made from healing plants. These primitive twig “brushes” actually work quite well, and provide a natural-bristle, disposable brush with healing herbs already incorporated right in the plant. Children find them particularly fun.

Herbalist Lesley Tierra, L.Ac., in her excellent book The Herbs of Life (Crossing Press, 1992), suggests that “the twigs contain volatile oils which stimulate blood circulation, tannins that tighten and cleanse gum tissue and other materials, such as vitamin C, which maintain healthy gums. Bay, eucalyptus, oak, fir, and juniper all work well for this.” In Asia, people often use twigs of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica).

In The New Holistic Herbal (Element, 1983), noted British herbalist David Hoffmann suggests using the roots of marshmallow, licorice, alfalfa, or horseradish. (See “Head Popping Horseradish,” page 52 for more information.) Of course, most of us will brush with a more modern, nylon-bristle brush.

Herbal medicine abounds with great substitutes for store-bought toothpaste. Most effective natural tooth powders are warming, which promotes circulation in the gums; astringent, which tightens the gums; and detoxifying, which removes debris. Of course any preparation should also remove plaque.

A classic Ayurvedic combination contains two parts powdered potassium alum, an astringent, and one part powdered salt. Prickly ash bark is a classic toothpowder from North America, and myrrh gum is widely used in Middle Eastern herbalism. Tea tree oil (very dilute) stimulates circulation and kills germs, and Leslie Tierra recommends a macrobiotic preparation of the ash of the calyx of the eggplant, which she says will cure “any toothache, pyorrhea, and other mouth and gum disorders.”

"Probably the most outstanding herbal remedy for mouth sores is licorice root, a potent anti-inflammatory and tissue healer. Put a pinch of powder on the sore, or suck on a lozenge made from DGL (de-glycyrrhizinated licorice)."

Re: substitute toothpaste ?
If you don't have sugar or agricultural products in general in your diet (small chance of that probably), you don't really need toothpaste.

Some twigs can be chewed on and brushed with to give a toothpaste like effect. Alder is one of them. Other than that, we have what people has mentioned. It's not charcoal however, it's ashes that works. Because of it being alcaline.

Chewing spruce or pine pitch do also work to kill the bacteria, I don't recommend it though, since everything will taste like it for the rest of the day.

Re: substitute toothpaste ?
I know this sounds crazy, but it works great. Fresh, steaming cow shit. Go chase the cow down and then load as much as will fit on your toothbrush and brush away.

You can use whatever remains as a deodorant. Works great.

Dumbass.

It's more convenient to shove the toothbrush up the cows ass whenever you need a bright smile... why complicate matters.

If your teeth have stains, you can remove them by rubbing strawberries or putting three tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with two tablespoons of salt. Also ashes of burnt bread, charcoal, burnt rosemary, honey, salt and eye-meal remove the stains on teeth.
