Grocery store asked for phone number today, not a good sign
I stopped by a General Dollar Market Grocery Store today and before the cashier could ring up my groceries she had to have a phone number.I gave her one(not a current number)and asked her why she needed it.She said she does not know she came into work today and they told her that is how it goes now. This is not a good sign at all for times to come.Seems like the only reason they would ask for that is to try and track people's grocery purchases.Has anyone else had this happen?I mean I know Best Buy and a few other stores ask every now and then for warranty or other info but a grocery store?

Could probably also be used to do a background check or something. Credit check, etc.

Were you using cash or debit card?

You don't have to give out your phone number or any personal information to any retailer, or anyone (except Law Enforcement)if you don't want to. Simply go back to using cash only, or take your business elsewhere.

Liberty. Use it, or lose it.

Peace.

I asked her about that she said a couple of customers had refused so she made up a number.Seems like that would be the best choice.I wonder how many people gave their real numbers.

Picked up some flower seeds at the Dollar General up the road a few months ago, I was paying cash and they asked for my phone number as well, the sale, obviously could not proceed until I supplied it. As soon as I got home the phone was ringing, some telemarketer, don't know if it was connected, but it was strange.

I paid cash but the cashier apparently has to put a phone number in to even begin to ring the stuff up before she scans the first item.

Did they say that your phone number was required to complete the transaction, or did you assume it was required because they asked for your number?

Just curious.

When I go into Michael's Craft Store they always ask for my zip code.

Nobody has asked for phone numbers yet.

Last week there was a security guard posted inside the front door of the Giant Supermarket I go to. Big guy. I gave him a dirty look.

I worked and supervised check outs. Believe me the girls hate it when they have to do something "special." They often find a way to mess with the system to get even. Can't blame them. LOL

Re: Grocery store asked for phone number today, not a good sign
I'm in the UK ... about 3 monthes ago I went to a craft/hobby shop about 20 miles from my home.

When I went to purchase at the till, after my items were rung through, I was asked for my telephone number and ADDRESS.

I had the cash in my hand to pay; keeping hold of it, I asked why the information was needed; I was told *just for company records* "We're conducting a survey" ... !

I said, "I don't have a phone, so I can't give you a number" (yeah, I lied! lol) .. so then I get asked AGAIN for my post code (zip) and my address ...

I just kept my money in my hand and said, "That's none of your companys business, now can I purchase these items, or shall I just leave?"

The cashier pressed a couple more buttons on the till ...(erm, if I was a conspiracy theorist I'd say she pressed the video cam button full on my face! ... ) ahm .. but I was eventually allowed to leave without disclosing my details.

I ain't going back though.

I had a lady ask me for my phone number at the check out and I said...I'll give you mine if you give me yours. Some places like Pep Boys use your number to identify previous service work etc. but I will always ask why they want my number and I may not give it. I don't mind giving a zip code since they use that for marketing purposes.

This is normal now. Large marketing databases, sold information, etc. etc.

You're right! No telling what it could be used for.

You can refuse to give them the number. I do it all the time, and it's no problem. I've even had clerks say, "What's your phone number? You don't really have to give it to me if you don't want to." without missing a beat.
I just say, "I prefer to keep that private" and that's the end of that.
