I have about 12 string trimmers. Stihls, Echos, Jonesreds, and Tanakas, about 3 of each. I think the best by far is the Jonesered, full steel shaft, not the wimpy braided shaft like the others. The carbs are plastic though, but they never broke or gave me problems.
Whats your favorite string trimmer?

Re: In this thread we talk about weed wackers, chainsaws, blowers
They are all straight shafts, never get those curved shaft back killers.

I also have the most powerful backpack blower made by Echo. I love using that thing! I have a little homelite backpack blower thats nice looking and lite, but absolutely useless cause its not powerful enough. But its nice if you want to clean off the deck of leaves. But it won't blow bricks around the yard like the Echo does.

Have you ever thought of having them square off against each other in a cage match to see which is the best trimmer?

I also have 2 Echo hedge trimmers. And 2 craftsman hedge trimmers. Echo wins hands down. I only use the craftsman trimmers for light duty work.

You didn't really mention electric hedge trimmers. Do you have any of those?

Also do rototillers fit in this thread or do they need their own special thread? Do you have rototillers?

Did you have to build a seperate storage shed just for your power yard maintenance equipment?

Any storage tips for those just starting out their collection?

Re: In this thread we talk about weed wackers, chainsaws, blowers
As far as lawnmowers go, the lawnboy 2-strokes are the best. I've had about 4 of them. Their weak point is the shaft needle bearings. If you throw on a heavier aftermarket gator blade and its a bit too heavy, the bearings tear up. You have to use a light blade, the lighter the better. The next best IMHO is the craftsman 22". 6.75hp, its the most powerful lawnmower in 22" size. And it gives a nice cut, but not as nice as the lawnboys.

As far a big lawnmowers go, I've only owned Scag mowers. I like them because they are super heavy duty and give the best looking cut. I watch what other mowers do to the lawns, and a Scag gives the sharpest looking cut I've ever seen. I have Kohler motors on mine, but I hear the Kawasaki motors are better. I have a little trouble with the air cleaner on the Kohlers, the don't really keep out the dust as well as I would like.

I have a Remmington electric hedge trimmer that I used to compare against my gas hedge trimmers. There is no comparison, gas wins hands down. In fact I was so disappointed with the electric trimmers performance I felt ripped off.

I have a roto-tiller, but I don't like talking about roto-tillers, its too controversial an issue, front or back tines. I have a front tine tiller.

Storage is always an issue. I have storage problems.

Do you work with this stuff? You ought to get a job as a sales rep. That would be fun, you could stand around at trade shows and when curious people come up to see what you have, you could fire up a string trimmer in one hand, blower in the other, do a little two handed power equipment juggling, get their attention and interest, then hit them with the list of features and advantages. They'd be covering your folding table with orders in less time than it takes to blow a broken brick across an expanse of wet pavement.

I like being around lawn power equipment in private. Its sacred to me. I could never sell them!

I can strip, clean and service an engine in about 40 minutes, that includes a complete carb teardown and cleaning, and new piston rings.

As far as chainsaws go I've owned Jonsered, Sthil, Craftsman, Homelite, MacCullough, Poulan, and a Canadian one that I can't recall the name of.

The Sthil and Jonsered had the most power, but they felt wrong in my hands. In fact I am still looking for the right chainsaw. I think there needs to be a redesign of the chainsaw ergonomics.

I am starting up in about a month. It is not hard to blow some money. I am going with all newer equipment because I want the warranties that come with them. I found a local dealer to buy them all from who has a good rep and also will provide me with loaners for equipment that is getting worked on.

You are so lucky to have found a good dealer. I had one but I moved away. :( I've been on my own for a few years now. But I don't mind, I don't trust those monkeys with my babys anyway.

Most dealers are ripoff experts.

You should have great productivity with that Exmark. :)

Kawasaki weed eaters are the best. When I worked in landscaping I could weed eat and edge an average sized entire yard in 15-20 minutes. I used a weed eater as an edger simply by turning it upside down. It's hard fuckin work, but it keeps you in shape.

Re: In this thread we talk about weed wackers, chainsaws, blowers
On the subject of chainsaws, has anyone here ever done any chainsaw art, even on a small scale? Did you ever carve a tree stump into an artistic shape, or a whole trunk into a giant standing grizzly bear?

It would be kind of cool to make a standing figure, for instance a bear, with its mouth open, and then you could hollow out a chamber for birds to nest in, and the birdies could fly in and out of the mouth between the oversized incisors.
