As for the cross and M - I've puzzled about that since I saw it on the day. I remember that the cross wasn't symetric and whilst he was still 'alive' (although not in Christ) I remember one particular picture of JPII and his chair behind him had a large red upside down cross on it:

Here's the coffin - don't forget that these 'people' use symbols any way up they choose. The cross is definately NOT symetric and the final shot is from an angle where the cross appears to represent the upside satanic version....the M could be a W and also could be a Greek 'E'.

I am Roy 'Bud' Davis the person who builds the coffin being discussed here. I did not build the coffin he was buried in, but did determine all the measurements from photos on the internet and created this near-exact replica which has been popular with people across the U.S. In answer to your question, not all Pope's coffins have been this plain. Pope John Paul II requested a simple coffin and his was built of cypress wood by Italian craftsmen. The irony is this; the cypress coffin was sealed in a fitted zinc box and put in a more ornate walnut coffin which was then placed in a marble lined grave beneath a marble floor in St. Peter's basilica.
