Hezbollah planning major attack on Beirut Airport
Published: Friday, 2 May, 2008 @ 3:09 PM in Beirut (GMT+2)
Beirut - Lebanese majority leader Walid Jumblatt accused Hezbollah of planning a large scale attack on the Beirut International Airport, to assassinate another key politician.

[link to yalibnan.com]

Jumblatt said that recently a container was found in the airport to which a surveillance camera was attached. He added that Hizbullah placed a container on a side road in the Ouzai district overlooking Beirut airport's western runway and placed a camera in it to monitor aircraft traffic along the facility.

Jumblatt revealed that Hezbollah was specifically monitoring western runway number 17, which is used primarily for executive jets. In addition to Jumblatt, only a handful of other Lebanese politicians fly on private jets: Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, Majority leader Saad Hariri, Defense Minister Elias Murr, MP Michel Murr, cabinet minister Mohammed Safadi and ex-Premier Najib Mikati.

He added the camera was used to collect information on the routine of arrivals and departures in the airport.

"It seems certain sides are monitoring (Key) figures at present and the trend is to carry out a major security operation," Jumblatt added.

He noted that a shoulder-fired Strella-M heat-seeking missile "would be capable of hitting a jetliner on the runway, for example."

Will Olmert survive this time?

PM survived failed war, several investigations, but latest affair may be political deathblow

Attila Somfalvi Published: 05.02.08, 12:13 / Israel Opinion

[link to www.ynetnews.com]

There is no doubt now: Destiny does not miss any opportunity to test Olmert’s nerves and survival skills. Of all the difficult moments that the prime minister faced since assuming the post, the latest affair came at the worst timing for him. Just when it appeared that he controls the situation and the bad winds are calming a little, and just when more people were willing to give him another chance – he is hit with the investigation, which ruins everything he built and reminds us of all the bad thoughts about him. That’s the last thing he needed.

Whether true or not, the reports regarding the latest investigation are very grave. Even if there is an iota of truth in them, it is hard to believe that Ehud Olmert would be able to continue serving as prime minister; the thought of bundles of cash reaching the hands of the most important man in our political hierarchy prompt deep revulsion.

The public and our politicians would not be able to digest now what they were willing to swallow when it came from Ariel Sharon and his sons. Those were different times, days of big moves and great indifference. The popular Sharon shook up the country with the disengagement plan, and a monthly salary of $20,000 to his son Gilad seemed legitimate, even if it was paid for surfing the Internet. However, today the situation is different: Ever since he assumed the post, Olmert lost a war, was interrogated four times, and is doing badly in the polls. The clouds hovering above his head are dark, and even a political artist such as Olmert would find it difficult to maneuver with the new suspicions.

One attorney said that based on media reports, either Olmert needs to go home, or Attorney General Menachem Mazuz needs to order him to pack up his bags. “When you adopt such a legally violent action against the prime minister,” the attorney said, referring to the special permit to investigate the PM urgently “you must possess something very dramatic, and if you don’t have such thing, and you are an attorney general who approves such tumultuous probe, you better think about retiring.”

What will Barak do?
Meanwhile, the political system is putting out feelers, whispering, and mostly guessing. At this time, nobody has real and credible information regarding what is happening in the prime minister’s investigation. Therefore, the politicians are waiting for developments and media reports. The sense is that now of all times something big may happen.

The quiet that currently prevails in the political system could give rise, in the coming days, to a grave political crisis that would shake up the country and the political system. Those who were looking for reasons to topple the government can now find them at the Fraud Investigation Unit.

If the affair becomes messy, the first to rock the boat would be the Labor Party. Its leaders won’t be able to allow themselves to sit idle in a government whose leader is facing such severe suspicions. If Ehud Barak indeed means what he says when he utters thousands of words regarding the importance of the rule of law, he would not be able to ignore this investigation. And if the Labor Party does not ignore it, the scent of elections will be back in the air.

On the other hand, we must recall Olmert’s exceptional political abilities to survive. Serious affairs were already associated with him, commentary that calculates his political demise has been written countless times, yet he fought back and survived. It is possible that in a few more days it will again turn out that talk of his departure was premature, and some commentators will have to eat their hat.

'Bush planning to attack Iran this year'
Thu, 01 May 2008 06:05:57

Ray McGovern
Ray McGovern, a prominent former CIA analyst, says US President George W. Bush is planning to wage a military attack on Iran this year.

McGovern who has been a CIA officer under seven US presidents--presenting the morning intelligence briefings at the White House for many of them--believes President Bush and his administration have no intention of leaving Iraq and are preparing to attack Iran in the next few months.

"I believe George Bush and Dick Cheney plan to take care of Iran before they leave office," the former CIA official said in an interview with Charleston Gazette, which was published on Wednesday.

McGovern also pointed to the US-led war in Iraq and said that the war had several motives, including giving a "rebuke" to Saddam Hussein, supporting Israel, controlling oil reserves and expanding permanent US military bases in the Middle East.

He also praised Navy Adm. William J. Fallon, the former commander of the US Central Command. Fallon was forced out shortly after Esquire magazine published a profile of his career that highlighted his strong opposition to any war with Iran and his desire to reduce troop levels in Iraq.

"Fallon was our last hope," McGovern said.

Syrian messages relayed to Livni through Turkish FM

Foreign minister meets Turkish counterpart in London during conference of donor nations discussing aid to Palestinian Authority. Israeli officials estimate Ankara will continue to mediate between Jerusalem, Damascus, although efforts have yet to bear fruit Roni

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni met Friday evening in London with her Turkish counterpart, Ali Babacan, from whom she received messages relayed by Syria.

This was the first meeting between Israeli and Turkish officials since Syrian President Bashar Assad's meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan last Sunday, following the reports that Ankara is mediating the talks between Jerusalem and Damascus.

Friday's meeting was held as part of a donor nations' conference in England's capital to discuss aid to the Palestinian Authority. Livni also met with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and was scheduled to meet with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and other British and Jordanian officials.

The meeting began with the participation of the two foreign ministers' entourages, and was followed by a face-to-face meeting in which the two discussed the Syrian issue.

Babacan delivered to Livni messages relayed by Syria through his country. Following the meeting, Israeli officials expect the delivery of messages through Ankara to speed up. In the meantime, however, developments allowing direct negotiations between Israel and Syria have yet to be achieved.

The disagreement between the two countries derives from Israel's demand that Syria withdraw from the "Axis of evil," cut its military ties with Iran, stop funding Hamas and Hizbullah and prevent arms smuggling into Lebanon. Assad, on his part, demands that Israel cede the entire Golan Heights and withdraw to the 1967 border.

Another issue raised during Friday's meeting was the escalation in the Gaza Strip and southern Israel. The nations taking part in the London conference are pressing Israel to lift the siege impose on Gaza.

During her meeting with Babacan, Livni clarified that Israel was working to provide humanitarian aid to the Palestinians, stating that the crossings have been opened for humanitarian needs. She added, however, that Hamas gunmen killed two Israeli workers at the Nahal Oz fuel terminal as Israel attempted to transfer fuel into the Strip.

The two officials also discussed the negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Livni told her Turkish counterpart that the talks were progressing despite the international community's skepticism.

Legal source: Olmert in a problematic situation

Senior legal official believes prime minister will not be able to remain in office if new suspicions against him prove to be true or if police come up with solid evidence. Another source involved in investigation says, 'This is a serious affair and a dramatic development'

Aviram Zino Published: 05.02.08, 22:07 / Israel News

[link to www.ynetnews.com]

The new investigation puts Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in a problematic situation, a senior legal source said Friday evening, addressing the new suspicions raised by the police in regards to an affair which took place before Olmert was elected prime minister.

"Should the suspicions prove to be true or should the police come up with solid evidence, I doubt whether the prime minister will be able to remain in office," the source said.

Another source involved in the investigation told Ynet, "This is a serious affair and a dramatic development."

A comprehensive gag order has been issued encompassing all details pertaining to the case. Sources in the Justice Ministry have estimated that the gag order would be examined once against next week, and that several details would be cleared for publication. At the moment, however, no additional details have been released due to the sensitivity of the investigation.

The prime minister was questioned under caution Friday morning for about an hour and a half. His former bureau chief, Shula Zaken, was also questioned on the same affair.

Head of the National Fraud Unit, Brigadier-General Shlomi Ayalon, arrived with two other investigators at Olmert's Jerusalem residence Friday morning at around 10 am. Once the interrogation ended, about 90 minutes later, the three police officers reportedly rushed to Attorney General Menachem Mazuz's office to brief him on the developments in the case and decide on future proceedings.

Olmert, said the Prime Minister's Office in a short statement issued Friday afternoon, cooperated with his investigators in full, and will continue to do so.

The urgent probe, proxy of a special order issued Thursday night by Mazuz, was the opening act in another investigation launched against Olmert.

The new investigation is not directly linked to one of the ongoing investigations against Olmert, but its leads did surface while the police were working on one of them.

Shula Zaken, who served as Olmert's bureau chief for years, was reportedly interrogated by the National Fraud Investigations Unit on Tuesday.

Zaken has been questioned by the police in the past in connection to other investigations held against the prime minister, as well as in connection with an affair which exposed alleged corruption in the Israel Tax Authority.

At this time, Olmert is facing three different investigations related to the time he served as the minister of trade, labor, and commerce.

There is something very interesting going on with the Peace Process the last few days. For weeks now, since President Bush's visit in January we've read articles about progress being made in the negotiations between Israel and the PA. Everything was running along as usual. Here are a few sample news articles from that time period:

PA Official reports progress over JERUSALEM in Secret talks:
[link to www.jpost.com]

Barkat: Israel and PA have Agreed on plan to divide Capital:
[link to www.ynetnews.com]

Erekat: Everything has been Negotiated:
[link to www.bloomberg.com]

Rice: Talks are progressing well:
[link to www.haaretz.com]

Rice: Peace Deal possible before the planned May 14th visit by Bush:
[link to www.jpost.com]

Olmert, Abbas meet, vow to fast-track Final Status talks:
[link to www.haaretz.com]

So things were moving forward slowly. Then, Abbas went to see President Bush last week (4/24), and supposedly the meeting didn't go well. Then he goes to Jordan and has an angioplasty done which prompted a few articles and comments about his health and who would replace him if anything happened to him. And now the Jerusalem Post has an article saying that Abbas is ready to turn in his resignation because things are looking so bad. He has reached the conclusion, according to top sources, that there is NO CHANCE that any kind of an AGREEMENT can be reached with Israel before the end of the year!! Why has this CHANGE manifested NOW, right before the 60th Anniversary celebration in Jerusalem? See the news article below for more about this development.

Next, we have Olmert. Olmert is now being squeezed by a new investigation while the previous ones are continuing on. If this new investigation sticks, he may end up being booted from the PM position. Likud is already calling for Labor to leave the coalition, and others are calling for Olmert to remove himself from that position now as well. Read the article below to learn more about this latest development. From most everything I've been able to read, if Olmert's coalition fell to new elections, then Bibi would most likely win. He has already said he will not divide Jerusalem.

Now, WHY is all this doom and gloom about these two Peace Process Leaders hitting the MSM just now at this time, right before the 60th Anniversary? Is this so that everyone's expectations of a possible Peace Deal happening next week or during President Bush's visit will be extremely low? If so, it would be a huge coup if President Bush (with Rice behind the scenes) was able to get a deal done within the next couple of weeks or while he was there!!

Just a few weeks ago everything was all smiles between the parties involved, and now things look hopeless in the temporal. This is a big change for the worse, as far as the Peace Process supporters are concerned. ANY kind of change involving this Peace Process, whether good or bad, large or small, should be of great interest to us at this time. Especially NOW as we wind up the last portion of Jerusalem's 40 (but before 41) years in June 2008.

Evidence Of Iranian Involvement In Iraq Mounts And Is Expansive

Strata Sphere ^| Monday, May 5th, 2008 at 9:39 am | AJStrata

The evidence of Iran’s military involvement in Iraq is growing rapidly as US and Iraqi forces take out the Mahdi Militia fighters. This evidence is bringing the situation between Iran and the US to a head, because the US cannot allow any nation to target its troops without responding with swift and deadly action. Otherwise it is open season on Americans around the world. If we don’t take action when our troops are killed then it means we are too weak-kneed to take action when any American is the target of foreign state aggression.

Michael Gordon of the NY Times notes today the Iran has allowed military training camps to be set up near Tehran where Iraqi militia fighters are trained by Hezbollah trainers (trained by Iranians originally, of course):

Militants from the Lebanese group Hezbollah have been training Iraqi militia fighters at a camp near Tehran, according to American interrogation reports that the United States has supplied to the Iraqi government.

An American official said the account of Hezbollah’s role was provided by four Shiite militia members who were captured in Iraq late last year and questioned separately.
The United States has long charged that the Iranians were training Iraqi militia fighters in Iran, which Iran has consistently denied, and there have been previous reports about Hezbollah operatives in Iraq.
But the Americans say the reports of Hezbollah’s role at the Iranian camp offer important details about Iranian assistance to the militias, including efforts Iran appears to be making to train the fighters in unobtrusive ways.
The thing to take away from this snippet is someone is running a military training camp outside Tehran. Here in the US we arrested people for attempting to perform military training using paintball guns

Olmert Scandal Will "Shake The Country"

[link to www.israelnationalnews.com]
by Hillel Fendel

(IsraelNN.com) Staffers in the Attorney General's office said Monday, according to Army Radio, that the findings in the latest Olmert scandal collected thus far will "shake the country when they are revealed."
The sources said that the media blackout on the details of the investigation against Olmert would be partially lifted by Tuesday, "in accordance with developments."

In response to a request by Israeli media to allow them to publicize details of the latest criminal investigation of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Attorney General Menachem Mazuz said Sunday night, "We will closely and constantly follow the new investigation of the Prime Minister, and we will publicize details as early as possible."

The media request cited the "public's right to know," but Mazuz, together with the State Prosecutor and the Chief Detective of Israel Police, decided that a successful investigation is more important.

"True," the three wrote, "a situation in which the Prime Minister is questioned by police under caution, but the public is not given even general information about the suspicions and suspects, arouses difficulties from a public standpoint, as well as a legal standpoint. This is clear."
"At the same time," they continue, "it is important to clarify that, as opposed to the public's right to know, there is also the vital public interest of not harming the chance to get at the truth."

Police Chief Dudi Cohen said the same on Sunday afternoon: "What is good for the investigation takes precedence over the public's right to know. The special team that is investigating the Prime Minister must be allowed to work quietly in order to thoroughly complete the process."

The Yediot Acharonot daily newspaper, Israel's largest, is reportedly facing a police investigation of its own, after it published details of the investigation on Friday morning. Various reports have hinted that it concerns suspicions of illegal campaign donations or bribery from an American businessman. Olmert himself has called the various reports "vicious rumors." Olmert’s long-time close aide, Shula Zaken, was questioned on Sunday under caution for the third time; she has maintained her right to remain silent all three times, and is being held under house arrest until Friday. Channel 2 Television News quoted senior sources Sunday night as saying that the case was moving quickly toward an indictment.

The announcement by Mazuz and colleagues stated, "The unusual circumstances of the present case necessitated an urgent investigation of the Prime Minister and a gag order on all its details. The court issued the order after it was convinced of its necessity."

"In light of the obvious sensitivity," the statement continued, "and in light of the legal and public ramifications of this investigation, a special effort is being made by all those involved to hurry it as much as possible."

In short, no attacks are expected in the very short-term. Israel is too embroiled in the latest scandal of Olmert. However, terror groups are likely to get their act together if or when Olmert resigns in hopes of catching Israel with her pants down.
I am only thinking out loud, but I wonder what intel Assad got that he would be attacked enar the end of May or June as that is looking more and more likely. Friends in the know remain silent as to what the U.S. and Israel may be coordinating, but I can attest that Iran will not be a problem by next year.

ISRAEL SCANDAL'S LI LINK

REVEALED: BIZMAN WHO MIGHT TOPPLE OLMERT

[link to www.nypost.com]

By KATE SHEEHY

May 6, 2008 -- A Long Island mogul is at the center of a sensational bribery scandal that could bring down embattled Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, The Post has learned.

Millionaire financier Morris Talansky - who runs an investment firm out of his tony home in Woodmere - allegedly passed money to Olmert while the politician was mayor of Jerusalem in the '90s, sources said.

In a highly unusual move, Israeli authorities have barred the country's media from publishing Talansky's name - revealed now in The Post - saying it could hamper their investigation. Israeli media has referred only to the involvement of an "American businessman."

Talansky is apparently set to sing to Israeli authorities about his alleged role in the scheme, sources said.

"It looks serious, and it looks like they have a state witness" in Talansky, one source said.

Talansky - a philanthropist and political contributor to everyone from Rudy Giuliani to Bill Clinton - is in Jerusalem, where he has an apartment, preparing to head to a closed-door court hearing as early as today, sources said.

The 75-year-old was earlier questioned about the alleged scheme almost immediately after arriving in the country for Passover, and he implicated Olmert, sources have said.

It was unclear what the alleged payments to Olmert were for, but sources said they involved hefty amounts of cash.

Talansky repeatedly appears - sometimes under the nickname "The Laundry Man" - in the logs of financial dealings kept by Olmert's longtime aide, Shula Zakan, a source said.

Olmert was grilled by investigators Friday. He has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

The allegations are only the latest in a string of woes for Olmert, who has battled past charges of government corruption and questionable personal business practices.

"But this time seems very serious, and it seems eventually, we don't know if it will be days, weeks or months, in the end, he may not be able to continue to be prime minister," one source said.

A man answering the phone at Talansky's multimillion-dollar mansion in Woodmere yesterday said, "He's not available." Talansky lists himself as CEO of the Global Resources Group, a self-described financial-investment firm.

I am writing you after having an emergency meeting with former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom I have known since he was 26 years old. I was horrified to learn that when President Bush comes to Israel for its 60th Anniversary in May, he has made the decision to mobilize Arab nations to come for a summit on the 17th & 18th of May.

The purpose of this summit is to move forward with the Annapolis Road Map, the plan that will force Israel to give up a large percentage of Judea and Samaria, which they call occupied territories and divide the Holy City of Jerusalem.

It is extremely humiliating to think this would be America’s way of honoring Israel’s 60th year of prophetic rebirth. Even more outrageous, I saw the document confirming that the plan is to have this finalized by November 12, 2008.

Hezbollah network linked to Syrian army / intelligence

Published: Tuesday, 6 May, 2008 @ 10:24 PM in Beirut (GMT+2)

[link to yalibnan.com]

Beirut- Hezbollah has linked its private telephone networks to the Syrian Army's communications system as well as to Syria's mobile telephone network allowing Syrian intelligence to operate freely in Lebanon

and avoid Lebanese controls, al-Mustaqbal's Faris Khashan wrote Tuesday.

Internal Security Forces Commander Gen. Ashraf Rifi and Director of Military Intelligence Brig. George Khoury were assigned by the government more than a month ago to discuss the issue with Hezbollah, Khashan added.

However, Hezbollah's security chief Wafiq Safa and the party's international relations official Nawaf Moussawi informed Rifi and Khoury that "anyone who touches the network would be treated the same way we treat the Zionist enemy," he wrote.

Khashan labeled Hezbollah a "militia," noting that Hezbollah is not registered with the interior ministry as a political organization operating in Lebanon.

Khashan said police counter-terrorism expert, Maj. Wissam Eid, has been assassinated because he managed to detect the serial assassinations committed against March 14 figures to the Hezbollah telephone network.

He reported that Hezbollah sped up work on extending the network after Eid's assassination, "which means that the killing was aimed at destroying evidence on previous assassinations, including one that appears linked to Hezbollah."

The crime also aimed at creating "safe communications criteria for further assassinations," he added.

Khashan urged the government to speed up efforts aimed at separating the Hezbollah network from the Syrian networks, lodge complaints with the U.N. Security Council and the International Telecommunication Union against Syria, Inform the International Investigation committee of the development, allow municipalities to interrupt the Hezbollah network in their respective jurisdictions and link the network to the public telephone network.

Hezbollah should be asked to choose either to give up its illegal network or be declared an "illegal organization," Khashan concluded.

Beirut- Protesters from the Hezbollah-led opposition clashed with supporters of Lebanon's U.S.-backed government Wednesday as a strike by the Shiite militant group paralyzed large parts of the capital Beirut.

The violence deepened tensions in a country already mired in a 17-month-old political crisis pitting the Iranian- and Syrian-backed Hezbollah against the government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora. The troubles have left the country without a president since November.

The strike was called by labor unions after they rejected a last-minute pay raise offer by the government as insufficient. But instead it turned into a showdown between Hezbollah and the government.

The clashes began when government and opposition supporters in a Muslim sector of Beirut exchanged insults and began throwing stones at each other. Witnesses said security forces intervened and gunshots were heard, apparently troops firing in the air to disperse the crowds.

A cameraman for Hezbollah's Al-Manar television station was hit by a stone in the forehead, the state-run National News Agency reported. A soldier also was hit in the mouth by a stone.

Earlier in the same area, a stun grenade thrown into a crowd lightly injured three protesters and two soldiers, the agency said. It was not immediately clear who threw the stun grenade.

Around the city, protesters blocked roads with burning tires, dirt, old cars and garbage cans to protest against government economic policies and demand pay raises.

The protests and labor strike paralyzed Beirut international airport. Airport employees stopped working for six hours while opposition protesters blocked roads to the country's only air facility leading to the cancellation or delay of 19 incoming and 13 outgoing flights.

The unrest and roadblocks forced labor unions to cancel the main public demonstration planned to coincide with the strike.

Lebanon's political crisis took a turn for the worse this week when the government decided to confront the powerful Hezbollah. The Cabinet on Tuesday said it would remove Beirut airport's security chief over alleged ties to Hezbollah.

The government also declared that a telecommunications network used by Hezbollah for military purposes was illegal and a danger to state security.

Hezbollah and Shiite leaders rejected the government's decisions, raising tensions ahead of the planned labor strike.

Hezbollah is listed as a terrorist group by the United States. It has fought Israel for more than two decades, most recently in the 2006 summer war, and enjoys wide support among Lebanon's 1.2 million Shiites who are believed to be the country's largest sect.

The political crisis has exacerbated the country's economic problems. Rising oil prices and a weakening U.S. dollar, the favored currency here, have driven up the cost of living.

Just as the country is divided politically into opposition and pro-government camps, the unions were split as well on whether to support the strike. In Shiite sectors of the city where Hezbollah support is high, the strike was widely observed, with most businesses closed and streets empty.

In areas where government support is strong, some businesses were open but many people stayed off the streets and traffic was lighter than usual amid a heavy army presence.

Many schools throughout the city were closed because there was no busing for fear of unrest on the roads.

Roads to the Beirut seaport also were blocked.

The U.S. Embassy advised Americans to avoid areas where protests were going, to take "reasonable" security precautions and maintain a low profile in public.

Though things seem peaceful at the moment on the surface for Israel, major events continue to take place behind the scenes.

Israel is now assuming Iran has nukes and they have leaked out that Iran will have a nuke by 2009. See the Jerusalme Post today. Not much leaway between now and January 1 of 2009 to say intellgence estimates were wrong when all find out about their nukes. With that being said, (as I have said time and time again) Israel will be at war with Iran this year. Notice how little we hear about Iranian preparations for this event, besides the arming to the teeth of the Hezbollah, Syra, Hamas, and some third parties not known to the public. I expect when war does break out that several other nations would join in as supporters of Iran that the media is not now talking about. Further, Iran has troops ready to be airlifted to Lebanon as ell as many military ready in Syria when war does break out.

A neat trick that Iran Syria and the Hezbollah have garnered in providing communication outside of the mainstream phone lines. These entities have created a phone line for themselves using ther own optical lines so that the parties would not be cut-off during war. What about ceel phones and satellite phones? Well, there is concern that Israel would knock out such devices during the war with electronic jamming. SO, Syria rigged an optical line from Iran to Beirut and the south of Lebanon to use for access during the coming war.

Israel is enjoying quiet today, but look for more efforts to occur to interrupt said quiet up to and including when Bush comes to town.

This whole thing with Olmert is quite upsetting as it is hard to know what the new personalties will do in regards to war plans against Syria and Iran when Olmert is forced to step down as soon as next week. Intelligence officers from various nations do not know how to react an whom to speak to besides the military to complete various protocal for the coming war. Remember Sharon was very close to attacking all enemies when he had a stroke. Since then, Israel has been in limbo and now that Israel is progressing towards an attack sceme, Olmert is soon heading out of office. I hope the leak on crimes is only to ensure that a person caapble of handling the coming war is n place. Otherwise, the attack will be quashed and Israel will be a sitting duck waitng to be cooked by an Iranian nuke.

so if i'm reading you right, if Olmert gets booted out of office you believe someone may come to power that would put a halt to any war plans??

Not that I'm an Israeli political expert or anything, but it's my opinion that if Olmert resigns or is booted out, Kadima will have to appoint someone to take his place (probably Lizini sp) but that Labor or Shas would probably walk out in that event and bring down Kadima's coalition govt and thus new general elections would be needed, where I think Netanyahu/Likud would probably win.

who do you think would take over in the event Olmert is out of office??

Depending on the leader and political circumstances (will other parties bolt or not?) circumstances could prevent the war that is needed to clean-up the region of missiles and nukes. The military has it all planned out, but without a leader willing to go forward, the plan can not be enacted.
Lizini appears to be the one that would be in charge and if parties bolt, she would still be in charge until elections, but WOW, to have this happen now when events facing the nation of Israel are so serious for national survival, this can easily affect the entire plan put in place over the past three years.
My thoughts on this, when Olmert leaves, and if other parties bolt, Kadima may be forced to seek an emergency coalition told in public that it was based on the fact the government wants to look strong to all enemies, but in truth would be for the sole fact that Israel will be at war this year. IF Netanyahu and the Likud knew that in fact war is to come this year, they may join until elections with Bibi being placed in the cabinet at a strong position. I would look for Labor to try to drop out if they at all follow Peres and his statements that Israel should not go to war with iran, but Israel has no choice in this matter.
