I am not suprised as to what is happenning. My question has always been, what is taking them so long to take-over the government. Though Hezbollah may not want to organizationally takeover Lebanon politically, they certainly want someone in power who will allow them to do just about anything they wish to do whenever they want to. Remember the Hez, do not want to be looked at as the Lebanese army for the do not want to be held up to international law standards. Thus, if they exercise terror tactics or use weapons of mass destruction, Lebanon would not be sanctioned, and how do you sanction a non-political body of thugs?
What do I foresee, I could see Syria pouring in troops to assist in quelling civil war just like in the 80's. Perhaps Iran needs to step in too. This is simply a stepping stone towards Jerusalem. |

Tension high during Beirut strike
The main roads to the international airport are blocked by barricades
Opposition supporters led by Hezbollah in Lebanon are blocking roads in Beirut on the second day of protests which started as a strike for higher pay.
Activity is limited, with many shops, schools and offices closed. The international airport is also closed.
Tensions remain high after Wednesday's clashes between Sunni and Shia gunmen.
There are fears political and sectarian tension could erupt into more violence. The army remains out in force in parts of city, but not all.
The strike has added to tension between Lebanese Shia factions - which oppose the Western-backed government - and Sunni and Druze parties, which support it.
For the moment, it seems to be a tense stand-off, with everybody waiting to see if a way can be found to break the political deadlock, says the BBC's Jim Muir in Beirut.
It clearly would take very little to set off a conflagration that would be very hard to stop if shooting starts in earnest, and blood is shed, he says.
What happened in Lebanon is a rehearsal of what the small country is expected to witness over the coming days. It is the fruit of the divisions that run through the Arab world and the Middle East
Jordan's al-Dustur newspaper
Mid-East press alarm over strike
The main roads to the city's international airport are blocked by barricades of burning tyres and bulldozed earthworks, manned by militants from Hezbollah or their allies.
The final approach to the airport can only be done on foot, so flights have been cancelled for the second day running.
Major roads are also cut in the eastern Beqaa valley, disrupting the main motorway to Syria.
On the main thoroughfare dividing Beirut itself from the mainly Shia southern suburbs, the army is out in force.
But inside the densely populated areas nearby, where Sunnis and Shia live cheek by jowl, there is little army presence.
Many streets are blocked off by local people, with young men on a high state of alert, ready to defend their own neighbourhoods.
Ongoing crisis
The country is witnessing its deepest political crisis since the civil war.
Lebanon has been without a head of state for five months because of a power struggle between the Western and Saudi-backed government and the Hezbollah-led opposition which is supported by Syria and Iran.
Unions, which called the general strike on Wednesday, are demanding that the government triple the minimum monthly wage, which currently stands at $200 (£102).
Prices have been rising in Lebanon, especially food and fuel, with the situation exacerbated by the weakening of the US dollar, but Finance Minister Jihad Azour has warned that big pay rises would lead to rampant inflation.

not quite the same. Hamas took over Gaza after Israel pulled out. After the pull out there was a rather large vaccum void and Hamas filled it. Gaza was already a mess. Lebanon is a completely different story. they have a westen backed government with a standing military and is the "melting pot" of the region. Now its being over run by a bunch of terrorists. The change is going to be a lot more dramatic in Lebanon then it was for Gaza when Hamas took over |

5. UN peacekeepers attempt to keep the situation from spiraling out of control, but only succeed in widening the conflict. Infrastructure and civil services shut down due to continuing battles and the entire country is thrown into chaos. Syria steps in to 'stop the violence,' and establishes a 'temporary' controlling government along with Syrian troops to 'prevent further bloodshed.' |

I hear what you are saying, but it was a very short lived tenure that Fatah had. I think Hamas won election in Gaza only like 6 months after Israel pulled out. So Fatah was in power for a short period. And comparing Fatah (Arafat's party) to the Sinora govt in Lebanon in like comparing rotten apples and oranges.
End result is going to be the same in both cases - BAD |

The Hezbollah has been planninhg this for a while. Syria moved its troops knowing darn well what was to come. Israel knew. Once Olmert got inot hot water, Hezbollah took its action. Remember Assad has been plannng for this and said a war was likley after the 15th of May. Well -duh, he knew the Hezbollah would take over parts of Lebanon.
This is very similiar to the civil war in the 80's when Israel went running into Lebanon. This is actually exactly what Israel should be doing now to take care of the Hezbollah. As the Hez. forces are fighting in the streets in Beirut, Israel could be running across the border and taking no prisoners on the Hez. and then stay in the southern outskirts of Beirut and encircle it until an international force comes in. Israel could then knock out missile sites and close off the Bekka valley, preventing Syria from assisting the Hezbollah. Remember Assad has troops throughout the valley, as he knew this was to take place. Israel would then have to confront Syra too.
If the U.S. was in on the plan (intelligence knew this was to happen), they too could assist. In fact, this is why the U.S. has had its boats sitting off-shore. To forewarn all to leave the true Lebanese government alone. Now, is the U.S. going to take action or not? Come on Bush, do it! Our men are ready.
Meanwhile, if Israel is to act, which they should, they can stage the war initially on the Hez, then hit Syria, then take out Iran. This is an opportunity they should not pass up! However, Olmert's troubles may in fact delay any action, leading to the Hezbollah preparing for the next round in the north of Israel for occupation. |

Early this week, I observed information with a summary analysis that things would be calm until nearer the U.S. election. I hope they fire that intelligence officer.
