Expect more attacks throughout the week. I have no doubt terrorists would love to embarrass Israel and Bush. Do not expect an Israeli invasion just yet, but do expect some Israeli retaliation.

what's your take on the cease fire the Egyptian intel guy Sulmenia is trying to secure bwtn Israel and Hamas? After this little stunt I have a hard time believing a cease-fire is going to be reached. I think once Bush leaves town, the smack down is coming

A ceasefire is just that, each side would promise to stop offensive activities. Israel wishes to reach a deal that allows humanitary condtions to imporve in Gaza. However, Israel would still wish to strike terrorists as they see them and Hamas would say they have no control over other groups, thus allowing such attacks under the guise of another terror groups name. Attacks would then continue and things would unravel quickly even in the best of peace lover's dreams.

Instead, Gaza needs to be cleaned out of terror groups and weapons. Israel is prepared for such action and in fact is likely to carry-out such action soon after Bush leaves.

Hamas, knows its directives from Iran and will continue to inflict terror on the Israeli population in the next few days.

President Shimon Peres addressed the conference being held in his residence in Jerusalem Wednesday and said Israel would hit back at its attackers. "They are trying to destroy Lebanon through the Hizbullah and to destroy the Palestinians through Gaza," Peres said. He added, raising his voice: "I do not know what will happen in Lebanon and with the Palestinians, but with us, it will not work! We are determined to react as is necessary and to continue the peace process as is necessary."

Coming from Peres, this all means nothing. However, everyone knows that Iran is the reason for both problems. Iran is also the problem for Iraq too. There will be much talk as to what should be done with Iran. Sadly, maybe too much talk and no action until it is too late.

USS Mount Whitney on way to Lebanon for unscheduled mission

Official: Long-term deployment not expected

By Sandra Jontz, Stars and Stripes
European edition, Thursday, May 15, 2008

[link to www.stripes.com]

The U.S. Navy’s 6th Fleet flagship, the USS Mount Whitney, sails this week for an unscheduled deployment toward Lebanon and Cyprus to support Navy ships already at sea, Navy and U.S. officials said.

"[The ship] is deploying to assist with logistical missions and supporting assets at sea in the Mediterranean," said Lt. Patrick Foughty, a 6th Fleet spokesman. "It will be supporting additional communication requirements for our ships already underway" in the 6th Fleet area of operations.

He declined to provide details, citing security reasons. "I can say we don’t have any long-term plans to keep the Mount Whitney away from its home base."

Communications is the primary mission of the Mount Whitney, homeported in Gaeta, Italy.

The Mount Whitney deployed in 2006 as the command and control ship for evacuation efforts of some 15,000 Americans from Lebanon.

Violence erupted once again last week in the embattled nation, but this time between the U.S.- and Western-backed government and Hezbollah-led opposition.

The violence forced the closure of the international airport in Beirut a week ago. The U.S. Embassy in Cyprus stepped in and began helping U.S. Embassy staffers in Beirut by providing helicopter support to ferry in personnel and supplies such as in mail, said a U.S. Embassy spokesman in Cyprus.

"With the airport inaccessible, we have to be able to re-supply the embassy."

A spokesman from the U.S. Embassy in Beirut did not respond to requests for comment Wednesday.

In July 2006, 15,000 people were evacuated from Lebanon to Cyprus after war broke out between Hezbollah and Israel; and the U.S. military diverted some of its naval, air and ground assets to the region to help in the evacuation efforts.

Israel, US see need for "tangible action" on Iran

[link to www.ynetnews.com]

'Both countries understand tangible action required to prevent Islamic Republic from moving forward on a nuclear weapon,' PM Olmert's spokesman says after Bush visit, adding that diplomatic efforts to press Iran are 'insufficient'

Reuters Published: 05.16.08, 14:11 / Israel News

The United States and Israel agree on the need for "tangible action" to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's spokesman said after a visit by US President George W. Bush.

"We are on the same page. We both see the threat ... And we both understand that tangible action is required to prevent the Iranians from moving forward on a nuclear weapon," Olmert spokesman Mark Regev said on Friday.

Regev described diplomatic efforts so far to exert pressure on Iran as "positive", but added: "It is clearly not sufficient and it's clear that additional steps will have to be taken".

Asked about the option of using military force, Regev said:

"Leaders of many countries have talked about many options being on the table and, of course, Israel agrees with that."

'Harsh domestic crises'

Bush ratcheted up his rhetoric toward Tehran in a speech to Israel's Knesset on Thursday, saying critics' calls for talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were comparable to the "appeasement" of Adolf Hitler before World War Two.

Bush vowed that Washington would stand with Israel in opposing Iran's nuclear ambitions, saying it would be "unforgivable" if Tehran were allowed to get the bomb.

Iran has said it will not stop uranium enrichment, which it says is for generating electricity only. In a separate development on Friday, the United States said it would sign an agreement with Saudi Arabia to help the kingdom develop peaceful nuclear energy.

Defense Minister Brigadier General Mostafa Mohammad Najjar was quoted by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) as saying Thursday that Israel was too weak and vulnerable to attack Iran.

"Israel has raised the claim of attacking the Islamic Republic of Iran mostly to cover up its weak points and harsh domestic crises," Najjar said, adding that "the Israelis have made the claims on the 60th anniversary of their establishment to divert public opinion from broad corruption and weakness of Israeli officials."

Iranian defense minister: Israel too weak to attack

Israel has raised the claim of attacking the Islamic Republic of Iran mostly to cover up its weak points and harsh domestic crises,' Mostafa Mohammad Najjar says

Dudi Cohen Published: 05.16.08, 13:32 / Israel News

Israel is too weak and vulnerable to attack Iran, Defense Minister Brigadier General Mostafa Mohammad Najjar was quoted by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) as saying Thursday.

Turning his attention to Lebanon, the Iranian defense minister said the country's destiny is important for the world of Islam.

According to IRNA, Najjar said Iran supports a "united, safe and broad-based Lebanon in which all parties and groups are cooperating with each other.

"Any foreign intervention will be harmful to the interests of the Lebanese and serve the enemy wishes," he was quoted as saying.

ANALYSIS: Who wants to stop Iran?

[link to www.haaretz.com]

By Shmuel Rosner, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: George W. Bush, Barack Obama

Idaho senator William Borah didn't live to see the end of World War II. He died in 1940, before the U.S. had even joined the Allies and gotten involved in the war. Borah was an isolationist who wanted nothing more than American withdrawal from world affairs. And it is his words that Bush quoted Thursday in Jerusalem: "Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided."

Bush did not waver Thursday from the policies that have guided his administration since September 11, 2001. His position on Iran is longstanding. But on Thursday, when he again spoke of the naivete of those who believe dialogue can block Iran's nuclear program, it blipped on America's political radar. Barack Obama's campaign was quick to respond, calling it "extraordinary politicization of foreign policy." If those who want to talk to Iran are like those who wanted to talk to Hitler - then Obama is Neville Chamberlain or Senator Borah.

But Bush should be measured by the same yardstick. Meetings will not stop Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but neither will speeches in Knesset.
AdvertisementBush may not be as naive as Obama, but U.S. foreign policy under his leadership has failed time after time on the Iranian issue. International sanctions are too skimpy to mount any real pressure against Iran's uranium enrichment program, and Tehran is gaining.

One knowledgeable observer was using this baseball metaphore yesterday. The Iranians have players waiting on all three bases. Hamas on 1, Syria on 2 and Hezbollah on 3. All they need now is the homerun - a nuclear bomb in the hands of Iran will send them running.

Bush often says he learned a thing or two from his years as the owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team: "I developed a thick skin against criticism. I learned to ignore minor setbacks and focus on the long haul." But in the case of Iran, the long haul is creeping ever closer, and it appears Bush plans to leave the problem for his successor.

Earlier this week, he gave the Israeli press a rather complicated answer regarding what he hopes to accomplish during his term. "I think what definitely will be done is a structure on how to deal with this, to try to resolve this diplomatically. In other words, sanctions, pressures, financial sanctions; a history of pressure that will serve as a framework to make sure other countries are involved."

And here is what he said Thursday: For the sake of peace, the world must not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. And he added: "America stands with you in firmly opposing Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions." Bush's declarations could be seen as a calming expression of support: The U.S. president clearly does not favor a nuclear Iran. But one can also wonder about the wording he chose in this speech. Does relying on what the "world" does - or standing with Israel, which might take action itself - mean that America does not plan to be the one to stop Iran?

Israel’s Missed Boat in Lebanon

....

While the president was busy with ceremonies and speeches, secretary of state Condoleezza Rice and national security adviser Stephen Hadley took Israeli officials to task. Hadley in particular bluntly blamed Israel for the downfall of the pro-Western government bloc in Beirut and its surrender to the pro-Iranian, Pro-Syrian Hizballah. If Israeli forces had struck Hizballah gunmen wile on the move, he said, Hassan Nasrallah would not have seized Beirut and brought the pro-government militias to their knees.

One US official said straight out to Olmert and Barak: For two years, you didn’t raise a finger when Hizballah took delivery of quantities of weapons, including missiles, from Iran and Syria. You did not interfere with Hizballah’s military buildup in southern Lebanon then or its capture of Beirut now.

IDF generals who were present at these conversations reported they have never seen American officials so angry or outspoken. Israel’s original blunder, they said, was its intelligence misreading of Hizballah’s first belligerent moves on May 4. At that point, Israel’s government military heads decided not to interfere, after judging those moves to be unthreatening.

The Americans similarly criticizes Israel for letting Hamas get away with its daily rocket and missile attacks on Israel civilians year after year.

Barak hints Gaza incursion imminent

herb keinon and yaakov katz , THE JERUSALEM POST May. 19, 2008
[link to www.jpost.com]

Even as Defense Ministry officials said Sunday that Israel was likely to accept the Gaza Strip cease-fire deal brokered by Egypt, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, in a meeting with a high-level US congressional delegation, did not mention the cease-fire and talked instead about a possible large-scale military incursion.

Participants in Barak's meeting with the Congressmen said they walked away from the discussion with an impression that an IDF operation was very much in the offing.

In the meeting, which included US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Barak asked the members of the bipartisan congressional delegation to think how they would act if for seven years San Diego had been bombarded by rockets from Tijuana, just across the Mexican border.

When asked during an interview with The Jerusalem Post afterward whether Israel would be justified in launching a widespread incursion into Gaza, Pelosi said that "Israel makes its own decisions about its own security. I would hope that it is something that could have been avoided by other means. Minister Barak was very direct in his presentation to us about what the possibilities were."

Barak is scheduled to talk about the terms of the Egyptian-proposed cease-fire during talks in Sharm e-Sheikh on Monday, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, the architect of the proposal.

Barak is expected to urge Egypt to change its cease-fire proposal to a two-stage deal that would first include a cessation of terrorist activity and IDF military operations, and then an opening of the border crossings into Gaza in exchange for the release of kidnapped soldier Cpl. Gilad Schalit, defense officials said Sunday. Under Cairo's original proposal, the border crossings were to be opened immediately, along with the end of terrorist activity and the cessation of IDF action, and Schalit was not involved in the deal.

Officials said Barak planned to present Mubarak and Suleiman with a list of conditions that Israel had set for its acceptance of the cease-fire with Hamas, including an increase in Egyptian efforts to stop weapons-smuggling into Gaza along the Philadelphi Corridor.

The officials said that Israel was likely to accept the cease-fire deal even if it did not include Schalit's immediate release. An Egyptian promise to expedite its mediation over Schalit's release could, the officials said, also be considered progress and constitute a reason to accept the truce.
In addition to meeting Mubarak and Suleiman, Barak will meet later in the day with Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan and then have dinner with Egyptian Defense Minister Muhammad Hussein Tantawi. The Turks have been active in recent months trying to mediate between Israel and Syria.

Suleiman met Sunday with Meretz MK Yossi Beilin, and Beilin - in a statement put out after the meeting - said Suleiman had told him he could set the date for the start of the truce on Monday, if Barak came to Sharm with Israeli approval to the current terms.

Beilin also said that if Israel agreed to the list of Palestinian prisoners, Schalit could be included in the deal. Suleiman said that due to Israel's opposition to Palestinian names on the list, negotiations to bring about Schalit's release could only begin after a cease-fire was reached.

Defense officials said that it was unlikely that Barak would finalize the deal during his meetings on Monday, but that he would make Israel's position clear, including the terms for its acceptance.

"Barak will stress the importance of Schalit being released as part of the deal," a senior official said. "The release may not take place immediately and could be a second stage for the deal."

Barak's meeting with the Egyptian president will take place a day after Mubarak met separately with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni within the framework of the World Economic Forum, as well as with Likud head Binyamin Netanyahu.

"Hamas is a mutual enemy of Israel and Egypt," Netanyahu told Mubarak.

"Israel has no choice but to topple the Hamas regime."

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, meanwhile, said at the outset of the weekly cabinet meeting that the current situation in the Gaza Strip "cannot continue," and we are "very close to a critical point regarding the situation" there. He did not let on, however, whether the critical point was a decision to step up military action or accept an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire.

"Suffice it to say that we are convinced that it is absolutely impossible to let the situation in the South go on as it has in recent months," Olmert said. "The critical point regarding how matters will be conducted is very close. Of course, our mission is to see to it that the residents of the South live tranquil and secure lives without being under constant threat as they have for a very long period."

Industry, Trade and Labor Minister Eli Yishai, meanwhile, urged Olmert to convene a security cabinet meeting to discuss the situation in Gaza.
"Ashkelon has turned into a theater of terror, and the [security] cabinet still hasn't convened," Yishai said during the meeting. "There are indications that Beersheba will be at risk of rocket strikes, and we need to hold a discussion about this."

In a related development, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who threatened to resign if an agreement were not reached within six months, said that a deadlock in peace negotiations would strengthen extremists and would likely bring the Middle East back to "the tragedy of 2000 that followed the failure at Camp David." Beilin told Abbas that now was the time for the believers in a two-state solution to persuade the doubters in their nations that solutions existed and could be implemented, even at the eleventh hour.
