A senior Egyptian official told news agencies that Israel had agreed in principle to the truce terms in Gaza. "The leaders of Israel expressed their support for the Egyptian proposal for the truce in Gaza," the source said.
According to reports, Egyptian Intelligence Chief Omar Suleiman delivered the message to Hamas during a meeting that took place in Cairo. (AFP)

Syrian foreign minister says Israel agreed to cede Golan; officials at PM's Office say do not recall such a commitment

The Prime Minister's Office announced Wednesday that Israel and Syria have launched direct negotiations in Turkey.
Ynet has learned that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's associates, Yoram Turbowitz and Shalom Turgeman, have been meeting with senior Syrian officials in Ankara since Monday.
A dramatic statement issued simultaneously in Jerusalem, Damascus and Ankara said that "Israel and Syria have launched peace talks mediated by Turkey.
"The two sides have declared their intention to hold the negotiations in good faith and openly, and hold a serious and continuous dialogue in order to reach a comprehensive peace deal in accordance with the framework set at the (1991) Madrid Conference."
Following the announcement, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem said that Israel had agreed to fully concede the Golan Heights.
Sources at the Prime Minister's Office told Ynet in response, "The negotiations are being held on the basis of the Madrid Conference principles. We do not recall an Israeli commitment at the conference to fully cede the Golan Heights."
Shortly before the announcement was released, the prime minister briefed Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, the Mossad and Shin Bet chief and the coalition leaders on the talks.
The Prime Minister's Office is currently waiting for the return of Turbowitz and Turgeman from Ankara in order "to learn of the achievements in the attempt to launch a communication channel with the Syrians mediated by Turkey."
High tensions on border
The indirect talks between Israel and Syria began in February 2007, when Olmert visited Ankara. In a face-to-face meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, it was agreed that Turkey would mediate between the two countries in a bid to reach a peace agreement.
The prime minister entrusted his chief of staff Turbowitz and his diplomatic advisor Turgeman with the handling of the Turkish channel. The two recently travelled to Turkey several times and held direct talks with the authorities. Three weeks ago, a date was set for a meeting between representatives from both sides in Ankara.
As part of the preparations for the meeting, Olmert's aides collected all the material accumulated in the previous rounds of talks. The material was analyzed along with officials who were involved in the previous negotiations. In the past few days it eas decided to "hit the road" and release a joint official declaration.
According to a recent Turkish report, Israel agreed to withdraw from the Golan Heights in exchange for a peace agreement with Syria. Olmert, who was on vacation in the Golan at the time, did not deny the report, creating a political turmoil.
Since the end of the Second Lebanon War, tensions at the border between the two countries have been high, sparking fears of war.
Meanwhile Wednesday, media outlets in Syria reported that a Syrian citizen from the village of Ghajar had been released from an Israeli jail. The man, Mohammed Abed Al-Shmali, was arrested in December 2003 on suspicion of delivering information to Hizbullah in exchange for an approval to sell drugs on the border. There are 13 more Syrian citizens jailed in Israel.

Announcement of direct negotiations between Israel, Syria storms through political arena, as Right argues cold, cynical move, Left welcomes initiative. Prime Minister's Office rejects claims statement meant to sidetrack public opinion from PM's legal troubles
Amnon Meranda Published: 05.21.08, 13:18 / Israel News
The political arena was shaken Wednesday, following an announcement by the Prime Minister's Office that Israel and Syria were holding direct peace talks mediated by Turkey.
The political Right immediately connected the dramatic announcement to the legal hot waters Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is in, saying that the further the investigation into his alleged bribery offenses becomes, the more dramatic his political move will be.
Leaders of the Likud, National Union-National Religious Party and Yisrael Beiteinu factions have demanded that the Knesset hold a special session following the announcement.
"Olmert has just proven that he is willing to sell off anything, including the safety of the State of Israel in order to take the public's mind off the criminal actions he is suspected of," Knesset Member Gilad Erdan (Likud) told Ynet.
"Shas, (Foreign Minister) Tzipi Livni and (Defense Minister) Ehud Barak will soon find themselves partners in surrendering the Golan Heights, unless they leave the coalition immediately," he added.
MK Gideon Sa'ar, chairman of the Likud faction, reiterated, saying the announcement demonstrated that "Olmert's calculated cynicism when gambling Israel's strategic assets for his own political survival knows no bounds… He has no mandate to make any concession in the Golan Heights."
MK Nissan Slomiansky (NU-NRP) said, "The launching of negotiations with Syria prove that the prime minister's investigations have reached a very advanced stage."
NRP chairman, MK Zevulun Orlev, also linked between the timing of the negotiations and the investigations against the prime minister: "Olmert is trying to save his skin at the Golan's expense due to heavy bribery suspicions, while critically hurting the State's security.
"The Syrians and Americans must know that the Israeli prime minister has no moral authority to stay in office and has no legitimization to negotiate the Golan. Any agreement with him has no chance of being approved by the Knesset."
MK Silvan Shalom (Likud) said that negotiations with those calling and working for Israel's destruction were a farce. "Negotiations with Syria will bolster the extremists and weaken the moderates, and will legitimize the terror organizations."
Coalition criticizes Olmert as well
Some Labor Party members also slammed Olmert's announcement. MK Danny Yatom said, "The publication of the negotiations has a clear purpose, aimed at covering up the prime minister's investigations. As a person who took part in all the talks and discussions on the Syrian issues, the Syrians are not directly discussing fundamental issues."
MK Shelly Yacimovich added, "By spreading the new spin on imaginary peace talks with Syria, the prime minister is trying to cynically fool decent, peace-seeking citizens. His only aim is to divert the attention from his cash envelopes."
Shas members were also among those who did not rush to welcome the negotiations. Party Chairman Eli Yishai said that "Syria is still the root of the axis of evil. We should ask ourselves whether we should hand our northern front to the axis of evil."
Minister Yishai expressed his surprise over the Israeli announcement, saying that "the prime minister said in the past that as long as Syria holds on to its stances, negotiations should not be held. It is unclear what has changed. Our security must not be placed in the hands of Hizbullah."
The political Left, however, welcomed the announcement: Meretz's MK Ran Cohen said he hoped "both sides will have the courage necessary to see the process through and help stabilize the region and isolate Iran."
The Prime Minister's Office rejected various claims saying the announcement was a media spin made to divert attention from the prime minister's legal predicament, saying the talks with Syria were "a long process which has finally materialized."

(Reuters) - Israel and Hamas still differ on terms for a ceasefire that Egypt is mediating, a Palestinian official familiar with the talks said on Wednesday.
Egypt issued a statement late on Tuesday saying Israel had agreed on the terms of the truce as presented to them by Egyptian mediators.
The official said Israel agreed to stop ground raids and air strikes in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip if militants halted rocket attacks, but had not accepted the group's demands to reopen the territory's border crossings as soon as a ceasefire begins.
"Israel offered calm for calm, and said it would assess the situation and alleviate the blockade as calm prevails," said the official, who declined to be identified.
He said Egypt would inform Israel of Hamas's response later on Wednesday after mediators met officials from the group.
Egypt has been trying to broker a truce to end violence that could derail U.S.-backed peace negotiations between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Hamas, which seized control of the Gaza Strip last June, has offered a six-month halt to hostilities in the territory in return for an end to Israeli raids and the reopening of the border crossings.
In the latest violence in the Gaza Strip, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at a car carrying a Hamas mortar crew. They fled the vehicle before the projectile hit and were unhurt but five passersby were wounded, medical workers said.
Israel has also said a deal with Hamas must address the issue of a captive Israeli soldier. Hamas has said a truce agreement and the release of Gilad Shalit, held by Gaza militants since 2006, should remain separate issues. Continued... |

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has urged the United States to impose a naval blockade on Iran to pressure it to stop its controversial nuclear programme, the Haaretz daily reported on Wednesday.
"A blockade of maritime and air routes against Iran is a good possibility," Eitan, the minister in charge of pensioners' affairs, told public radio.

Dear friends:
I do not have the ability to publicly email as it has been deemed a threat to operations. Military Man is authorized to release this. However, please note, plans for war are here. Even Olmert is aware that Iran must be attacked this year. Bush this week told Olmert that he may have to go alone if the attack is to occur this summer. Bush’s position is much weaker than hoped. If Iran strikes U.S. positions, then Bush has plans to retaliate and assist Israel.
Israel is faced with the same missile threat from Syria as I discussed before. Hezbollah are fortified and ready for an attack and they have chemical weapons ready. Iran is formenting into a broth as they await plans to hit Israel with a nuclear weapon.
Lines are drawn in the sand.
Isareli leaders will now begin to talk of the coming attack.

Further comments.
"If Iran continues with its programme for developing nuclear weapons, we will attack it. The sanctions are ineffective," Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz told the mass-circulation Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper.
"Attacking Iran, in order to stop its nuclear plans, will be unavoidable," said the former army chief who has also been defence minister. |

Israel's enemies know they cannot win a war against her conventionally. They know without some type of advantage, they will lose. I have no doubt chemical weapons and a nuclear weapon will be used. Iran has been waiting to confront Israel until they had sufficient quantities of nukes already in place. Thus the pause, but Iran does have a few in hand now. Thay are ready to strike. Germs, do not know, but why not if one is wllng to use nukes and chems? |
