Olmert, Barak, Livni to Decide on Gaza
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will convene today with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak to decide on whether to order a wide-scale military operation in the Gaza Strip or to go ahead with a calm agreement with Hamas.
The Israeli army's Chief of General Staff Lt-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi and head of the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) Yuval Diskin will present their stand regarding the proposed Gaza incursion.
The three will tomorrow present their views to the government, which will make the final decision.
An incursion into the Gaza Strip is increasingly becoming the favorite choice for Israel, despite an estimate that there would be many casualties on both sides.
In the past few weeks three civilians have been killed in Israel as a result of the continuing launching of rockets from the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud 'Abbas today met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in an attempt to push forward talks between Israel and Hamas under the auspices of Egypt.
Over the weekend, Hamas delivered a letter to Israel from abducted soldier Gilad Shalit, in which Shalit reportedly begged for his life.
The timing of Hamas' move appeared to be aimed at putting pressure on Israel not to attack Gaza.
"The letter relayed from Gilad Shalit put an end to any such notion [of attacking Gaza]," a senior source affiliated with one of the Palestinian terror organizations told the Israeli news portal Ynet.
"All they [Israel] can do now is just keep threatening," the source added.

90% say Israel tainted with corruption.
The Israeli public's confidence in its politicians and democratic institutions is decidedly on the wane, according to the Democracy Index for 2008.
Israel's 2008 Democracy Index reports grim results for public trust in government
According to this year's survey, the media, which the Israeli public loves to hate, has outranked the Supreme Court as the institution deemed to best safeguard Israeli democracy.
With a 36 percent rating, the media is ahead of the court by only one percentage point - but it's a very telling point when the Supreme Court falls behind the media as a guardian of democracy. The Knesset ranked third as a protector of democracy, with 16%, and the prime minister limped into fourth place with 13%.
Of institutions most trusted by the public, the IDF is in the lead, but even so, at 71%, its rating has declined by three percentage points from last year.
Most troubling to Arye Carmon, founder and president of the Israel Democracy Institute, which conducts the survey for the Democracy Index, and to President Shimon Peres, to whom Carmon presented the index on Tuesday, was the fact that 90% of the respondents believed that Israel was tainted with corruption and 51% believed that in order to reach the top of the political totem pole in Israel, a politician must be corrupt.

UN Secretary General suggests int'l force to man Gaza crossings
The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has suggested dispatching a multinational force to control Gaza's border crossings, in an attempt to end the blockade on the Strip.
The crossings into Gaza have been closed since Hamas took over Gaza a year ago, because Europeans monitoring the crossing require Israeli security clearance to operate, which has not been issued since Hamas' victory.

Israel keeps mum ahead of cease-fire meeting with Hamas.
The diplomatic-security cabinet is scheduled to meet Wednesday to discuss a truce with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, but meanwhile, Israel is preserving maximum ambiguity about its intentions.
Wednesday's meeting will focus on the proposal for a tahadiyeh (lull) that was mediated by Egypt. A similar meeting last week was canceled because Prime Minister Ehud Olmert decided that conditions were not ripe for a lull in the fighting in Gaza.

Israeli opposition moves to dissove parliament.
Israel's main opposition party on Tuesday set June 18 the date to introduce a bill requesting a dissolution of the current parliament and an early election which could end the premiership of scandal-enveloped Ehud Olmert.
"On June 18 we will bring forth a motion calling for the dissolution of the Knesset (parliament) in order to hurry the coming election in the most dignified way possible," local media quoted lawmaker Silvan Shalom from the Likud party as saying.

PM: Israel ready for talks with Lebanon.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Tuesday that he would be happy to start peace talks with the Jewish state's northern neighbor Lebanon.
"I would be very happy if the Lebanese government would announce its interest in direct, bilateral talks with Israel. I see this as having many advantages," local daily the Jerusalem Post quoted him as saying at a cabinet meeting.
Israel and Lebanon were engaged in a 34-day war in mid-2006 after the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border attack, six years after Israel ended its 18-year-long military presence in the neighboring country it invaded in 1982.
Olmert's remarks came weeks after Israel and its other northern neighbor Syria announced they had started indirect negotiations under the auspices of Turkey after an 8-year-long break off. Israeli officials have said that talks with Syria are expected to resume this week.
Meanwhile, Israel is also negotiating with the Palestinians, with the goal of reaching a comprehensive peace agreement within 2008.

Despite Egypt snub, Syria is returning to the Arab fold
Egypt conditions its reconciliation with Syria on Damascus' reconciliation with Saudi Arabia, a condition echoed by the ruler of Qatar, Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani.
A reconciliation with Syria is Mubarak's next objective, after helping bring the Lebanese political crisis to a close, thanks in no small part to Assad. Mubarak is likely to give the honor of bridging between the two sides to Qatar, and not to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, who hoped to play matchmaker on Tuesday.
The renewal of Israeli-Syrian peace talks also contributes to this reconciliation process by bringing Damascus closer to circle of countries considered "moderate." Assad is thus preparing himself for the U.S. administration that will replace Bush in the White House:

Israel, Syria set for more indirect talks.
Israel and Syria were set to hold a new round of indirect peace talks next week, officials said on Wednesday, three weeks after the two neighbours announced the Turkish-mediated negotiations.
"We will stand by our declaration to have ongoing talks. I expect their resumption shortly," Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's spokesman Mark Regev told AFP.
A government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Olmert's top aides Shalom Turgeman and Yoram Turbowitz would return to Turkey next week to continue the talks.
Both officials, nevertheless, declined to disclose any further details on the nature of the talks, which were simultaneously announced by Israel, Syria and Turkey on May 21, after an eight-year freeze.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said earlier this month that direct peace talks with Israel were unlikely before 2009, and added that they also depended on the fate of Olmert, who has been dogged by calls for his resignation over a graft scandal.

IAEA chief hits out at Israel again over Syria attack.
The head of the United Nation's atomic watchdog again hit out at Israel's willingness to take unilateral action against countries such as Syria, in comments published in a magazine interview Monday.
As well as the build-up of nuclear arms, the increasing penchant of countries to bomb suspected nuclear facilities also posed a growing threat to world peace, IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei told news magazine Der Spiegel.

Israel expects reply on Gaza truce conditions next week.
Israel said on Friday it expects a response next week to its conditions for a truce in Hamas-ruled Gaza, where tension is high after fighters bombarded southern Israel in a day of bloodshed.
Among the conditions, Israel is insisting that not only Hamas but also the other militant groups operating in the Palestinian territory halt their rocket and mortar attacks, a defence ministry official told AFP.
Another key condition is that progress be made towards the release of Gilad Shalit, a young army corporal seized by militant groups including Hamas in a deadly cross-border raid two years ago.
