Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Deputy Director Mohammad Saeedi on Friday rejected rumors that Iran has reduced cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, saying Iran’s cooperation with the agency is “continuing based on a mutual understanding.”
“Iran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency will continue at the highest level in line with the Safeguards Agreement,” Saeedi told the Mehr News Agency.
Associated Press on Thursday reported that the head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Gholam-Reza Aqazadeh in a meeting with IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei on Thursday has signaled that Iran will no longer cooperate with UN experts probing the alleged weaponziation studies.
“Speculations that have been published over the past two days about the meeting between Mr. Aqazadeh and Mr. ElBaradei are baseless and are based on unilateral analyses,” Saeedi asserted.
The IAEA in May presented its latest report on Iran’s nuclear activities to the UN Security Council, saying the Islamic Republic should response to allegations that it is conducting weaponization studies.
At a closed door meeting with diplomats in Vienna, IAEA chief for inspections Olli Heinonen claimed that the agency had gathered intelligence from around 10 countries, suggesting Iran was engaged in weaponization studies in the past.
“In Iran’s view the issue of the alleged weaponization studies has been concluded and Iran has fulfilled its commitments in this regard,” Saeedi stated.
He said the Thursday meeting between Iranian and IAEA diplomats took place upon ElBaradei’s invitation.
“The meeting was aimed at consulting the agency’s director general because he has a key role in nuclear negotiations between Iran and the 5+1 group. The two sides agreed to continue talks alongside the ongoing political negotiations,” Saeedi stated.
“Iran’s relations with the IAEA are continuing based on a mutual understanding,” he added.
He said the IAEA is currently conducting routing inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities under the safeguards agreement.
Saeedi stated that ElBaradei did not make any “special requests”.
“What is important for the director general is that the negotiations between Iran and the 5+1 group start as soon as possible and continue until it yields the desired results.”
Last week, Iran’s top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili held talks in Geneva with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana over ending Iran’s long-running nuclear standoff with the West.
U.S. senior diplomat William Burns attended the talks which marked the first high-ranking meeting between the two countries in 30 years.
Also present were representatives from the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany.
Russia, China, the United States, Britain, France, and Germany last month offered Iran an updated package of incentives in return for a halt to Tehran’s uranium enrichment program.
The package, which is a follow-up of an original proposal in 2006, offers nuclear cooperation and wider trade in aircraft, energy, high technology, and agriculture.
The Islamic Republic has also presented its own package of proposals on addressing international challenges, including the threat of nuclear proliferation and has said it has found common ground between the two separate packages.
Iran has repeatedly ruled out suspending uranium enrichment as a precondition for talks with the major powers and has said it will hold talks “only on common points”.
After the meeting, the some countries within the sextet said Iran had two weeks to reply to the offer to rein in its nuclear work in return for a halt to new steps towards more UN sanctions

Tehran will be hosting the 15th meeting of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) foreign ministers later today amid efforts to end Iran’s long-running standoff with the West over its nuclear program.
The 118 member states, 15 observer members, and eight international and regional organizations will be attending the four-day meeting.
The Non-Aligned Movement is a major supporter of Iran’s efforts to access peaceful nuclear technology.
Form the beginning of the nuclear row between Iran and the West, NAM has issued several statements in support of Tehran’s nuclear activities at international venues, most notably at IAEA Board of Governors’ meetings.
The Non-Aligned Movement is an organization of states which are not aligned with or against any major power bloc.
The organization’s objective, as stated in the Havana Declaration of 1979, is to ensure “the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security” of its member states in their “struggle against imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism, Zionism, and all forms of foreign aggression, occupation, domination, interference or hegemony.”
Since its establishment in 1955, NAM has repeatedly condemned the proliferation of nuclear weapons and has directed its efforts toward full nuclear disarmament.
However, NAM members believe that all nations have the right to access civilian nuclear technology according to international law and that no country should be pressured to relinquish its inalienable right to peaceful atomic energy.
During international negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear activities, the Non-Aligned Movement has drawn attention to Iran’s voluntary cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and its efforts to gain the trust of the international community by clearing up ambiguities surrounding its nuclear activities.
The NAM representatives at the IAEA Board of Governors have repeatedly asserted that pressuring Iran to rein in its uranium enrichment work is “illogical”.
They have frequently called for Iran’s nuclear dossier to be returned to the UN nuclear watchdog and warned that any strike on Iran’s nuclear installations would be a blatant violation of international law, the IAEA Statute, and the United Nations Charter.
NAM represents nearly two-thirds of United Nations’ members and comprises 55 percent of the world population, mostly in developing countries.
It includes India, Ghana, Pakistan, Algeria, Libya, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Indonesia, Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, post-1994 South Africa, Iran, and Malaysia.
Brazil has never been a formal member of the movement, but shares many of the aims of NAM and frequently sends observers to the Non-Aligned Movement’s summits.
On July 19, Iranian nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili held talks in Geneva with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana over ending Iran’s long-running nuclear standoff with the West.
U.S. Undersecretary of State William Burns also participated in the negotiations. It was the highest level of diplomatic contact between Iran and the United States in 30 years.

After the July 19 meeting, some countries within the sextet said Iran had two weeks to reply to the offer to rein in its nuclear work in return for a halt to new steps toward more UN sanctions.
Last Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Tehran had two weeks to respond seriously to a proposal made by the six powers or face “punitive measures”.
The United Nations has so far imposed three rounds of sanctions on the Islamic Republic including travel and financial curbs on Iranian individuals and companies and an asset freeze on Iran’s largest bank, Bank Melli.
The Non-Aligned Movement has also expressed support for global efforts to make the Middle East a nuclear weapons-free zone.
After Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert admitted that the Zionist regime has stockpiled nuclear warheads, the 118-nation Non-Aligned Movement issued a statement warning that Israel’s nuclear arsenal poses a major threat to Middle East security.
NAM has called for the Zionist regime to sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and to allow the IAEA to inspect its nuclear installations

Survey of the Anwar Sadat Chair for Peace and Development at the University of Maryland (with Zogby International).
Iraq: Only 6% of Arabs polled believe that the American surge has worked. A plurality (35% ) do not believe reports that violence has in fact declined. Over 61% believe that if the US were to withdraw from Iraq, Iraqis will find a way to bridge their differences, and only 15% believe the civil war would expand. 81% of Arabs polled (outside Iraq) believe that the Iraqis are worse off than they were before the Iraq war.
Iran: In contrast with the fears of many Arab governments, the Arab public does not appear to see Iran as a major threat. Most believe that Iran has the right to its nuclear program and do not support international pressure to force it to curtail its program. A plurality of Arabs (44%) believes that if Iran were to acquire nuclear weapons, the outcome would be more positive for the region than negative.
The Arab Israeli conflict: There is an increase in the expressed importance of the Palestinian issue, with 86% of the public identifying it as being at least among the top three issues to them. A majority of Arabs continues to support the two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, but an increasing majority is pessimistic about its prospects. If the prospects of a two state solution collapse, 50% believe it would lead to a state of intense conflict for years to come, while only 9% believe it would lead to a one-state solution, and only 7% believe that the Palestinians would eventually surrender.
Palestinian Divisions: In the conflict between Hamas and Fatah, only 8% sympathize with Fatah most, while 18% sympathize with Hamas, and 38% sympathize with both to some extent. In so far as they see Palestinians as somewhat responsible for the state of affairs in Gaza, 15% blame Hamas’s government most, 23% blame the government appointed by President Mahmoud Abbas, and 39% blame both equally.
The Lebanese Crisis: Only 9% express sympathy with the majority governing coalition in the current internal crisis in Lebanon, while 30% sympathize with the opposition led by Hizbollah, 24% sympathize with neither side, and 19% sympathize with both to some extent.
