Palestinians Skeptical of Israeli Peace Offer

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has reportedly put forward a peace plan offering Palestinians nearly all the occupied West Bank, according to a newspaper report. Palestinians called the Israeli offer "baseless."

Israel is reportedly willing to turn over 93 percent of the occupied West Bank to Palestinians, Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported on Tuesday, Aug. 12.

The catch would be that Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas would receive the land only if his forces were able to retake the Gaza Strip from the Islamist Hamas movement. Hamas seized power in the coastal territory in June 2007.

Israel's Haaretz newspaper said the proposed border is part of a broader plan to compensate Palestinians and will include a route connecting Gaza to the West Bank itself.

But Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said the report was "baseless," in an interview with AFP news agency.

"These are half-truths used by Israelis as a test balloon so they can blame the Palestinian authority should the negotiations fail," Erakat told AFP.

Israel's new 'peace' proposal

Jerusalem: Eight months into its difficult negotiations with the Palestinians, Israel has drawn up a detailed proposal for a peace agreement in principle, offering to withdraw from 93 percent of the West Bank, an Israeli newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The proposal includes arrangements on three bottleneck issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: borders, the Palestinian refugee problem and security, the authoritative Ha'aretz daily said, quoting a "senior Israeli official".

Israeli Premier Ehud Olmert presented the proposal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and was awaiting a reply, Ha'aretz said.

According to the report in Ha'aretz, Olmert offered the Palestinians land in the southern Israeli Negev desert, adjacent to the Gaza Strip, compensating for 5.5 percent of the 7 percent of the West Bank that Israel wants to annex. This would allow Israel to keep its major Jewish settlement blocs. In addition, the Palestinians would get a free passage, which would link the Gaza Strip with the West Bank, but nominally remain under Israeli sovereignty.

analysis: Bridging Turkey’s political divide

Is there a way out of this conflict? To answer this question we need to look at the nature of the conflict between the Islamists and secularists, which revolves around the place of secularism in the Turkish polity

Many political pundits were expecting Turkey’s Constitutional Court to mount a “judicial coup” against the ruling AKP for its alleged anti-secular activities in violation of the constitution. After all, hadn’t it closed eighteen political parties including the AKP’s predecessors — the Welfare Party and the Virtue Party — since the introduction of the 1982 Constitution?

Syria strongly condemns Lebanon's explosion

Syria Wednesday strongly condemned the deadly explosion in Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli as a "criminal act", the official SANA news agency reported.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Syria expresses regret and condolences to the families of the victims, underlining solidarity with brotherly Lebanon in facing those who threaten its security and stability, said SANA.

On Wednesday morning, an explosion took place in Tripoli, killing 17 people and injuring some 40 others, the LBC TV reported.

The blast occurred hours before Lebanese President Michel Suleiman's groundbreaking visit to Syria for talks that would redefine ties between the two neighbors.

Turkey and Iran / U.S.-approved relations

The welcome for Iran's president in Istanbul today may have been warmed by yesterday's report in Haaretz that Washington is opposed to an Israeli attack on Iran and declines to supply Israel the military support it seeks.

The U.S. may retain a military option, but Washington seems more amenable than ever to the type of diplomatic initiative Turkey is poised to propose in the next two days.

Turkey, which objects to sanctions against Iran, intends to sign an agreement to develop gas fields in Iran and a gas pipeline from Iran at the cost of some $600 million.

The Georgian minister for reintegration of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Temur Yakobash vili, revealed the depth of the illusion the day after the conflict broke out when he thanked Israel for its assistance in training Georgian troops. "Israel should be proud of its military, which trained Georgian soldiers," Yakobashvili said, with reference to Defensive Shield, the private company run by Gal Hirsch, a former general in the Israel Defence Forces.

Still unaware of what was really happening on the battlefield, Yakobashvili reported that a small group of Georgian soldiers had been able to wipe out an entire Russian military division, thanks to the Israeli training. "We killed 60 Russian soldiers yesterday alone," he said. "The Russians have lost more than 50 tanks, and we have shot down 11 of their planes. They have sustained enormous damage in terms of manpower."

The Russians, of course, knew all about Defensive Shield and the tens of millions of dollars worth of Israeli military equipment that Georgia had been purchasing. Just over a week before the conflict erupted, Putin put in a call to the Israeli president, Shimon Peres. His message, according to a western intelligence source, was simple: "Pull out your trainers and weapons or we will escalate our co-operation with Syria and Iran." Peres does not suffer the same illusions as Georgian ministers and the Israeli set-up left Tbilisi within two days.

Georgia's Israeli arms point Russia to Iran

JERUSALEM - With the eruption of fighting between Russia and Georgia, Israel has found itself in an awkward position as a result of its arms sales to Georgia. Israel is now caught between its friendly relations with Georgia and its fear that the continued sale of weaponry will spark Russian retribution in the form of increased arms sales to Iran and Syria.

After fighting broke out late last week between Georgia and Russia over the breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Israel's Foreign Ministry over the weekend recommended suspending the sale of all weapons and defense-related equipment to Georgia, the daily Ha'aretz newspaper reported.

Georgian Minister: Israel Sold Us Out

A Georgian minister expressed his disappointment in Israel's decision to stop supplying weapons to his country as a result of his country's conflict with Russia.

Israel's government joined the "West's betrayal" of Georgia, when it ordered its weapons’ companies to stop their supply to the country, Timor Yaqobshvili, the minister in charge of the rebel districts, told the Israeli daily Haaretz.

A few hours later, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, denied he had heard anything about Israel's cessation of weapons supply to his country, saying he had not had much time to think about it in the past few days.

Israel's Foreign Ministry recently issued a recommendation to freeze the sale of Israeli security equipment to Georgia, fearing complications with Russia.

Israeli officials believe Russia may interpret the sale of Israeli weapons to Georgia as a move that jeopardizes Russia's security.
