Defense officials: Iran increasing smuggling efforts to Gaza

Iran has increased its efforts to smuggle weapons into the Gaza Strip by using floatable devices that it drops near the waters off the Gaza coast and are then picked up by Palestinian fisherman, senior defense officials have told The Jerusalem Post.

Navy ship catches Palestinians trying to smuggle explosives into Gaza.
Photo: IDF

Slideshow: Pictures of the week According to defense officials, Iran was sending rockets as well as other types of advanced weaponry to Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip via tunnels dug under the Philadelphi Corridor and connecting the Sinai Desert with Rafah as well as by sea. Officials said that the Navy was doing an effective job in curbing the smuggling by sea but that there were shipments that Israeli forces did not succeed in intercepting.

"They throw the weapons overboard in waterproof sealed tubes which then float into the Gaza waters and are picked up by fishermen," one official said. "Sometimes Navy boats intercept them and sometimes they get through."

In recent months, the IDF has noticed an increase in Iranian-made weaponry in the Gaza Strip, including rockets as well as mortars. Terror groups in Gaza recently were equipped by Tehran with two different types of mortar shells made in Iran - one 120 mm with a range of 10 kilometers like a Kassam rocket and another with a shorter range of six km.

Officials in Jerusalem said that it was impossible that some of the weaponry now in Gaza was smuggled through tunnels burrowed from Sinai into Egypt, and that there was obviously an alternative route that was being used to smuggle weaponry into the Gaza Strip.

In addition to providing weaponry, Iran is also training Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists who have used the periodic openings at the Rafah Crossing with Egypt as well as the collapse of the border with Egypt in January to travel to Iran and train there in terror and guerilla warfare.

Officials said that the route the weapons took from Iran to Egypt could go a number of ways. One possibility is that the weapons are taken by boat from Iran to Egypt and then are smuggled into Gaza through tunnels or thrown into the waters off the coast and near the border. Another possible route is that the weapons are transferred by Iran to Syria, then to Lebanon where Hizbullah then ships them by boat to Egypt.

A branch of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards - called the Quds (Jerusalem) Force - is believed to be responsible for overseas operations such as training Hizbullah and Palestinian terrorists and providing them with weapons.

Meanwhile Thursday, a terror infiltration into the Kerem Shalom Crossing into Gaza was thwarted by the IDF. Military sources said that three armed terrorists were spotted on their way to the crossing - the main conduit for food and medical supplies transferred to Gaza - and were intercepted by a force from the Bedouin Desert Battalion that was stationed nearby. One terrorist was killed and another was wounded in an ensuing gunfight.

The foiled infiltration followed violence on Wednesday when three IDF soldiers and close to 20 Palestinians were killed in clashes in Gaza. On Thursday, 10 rockets were fired into Israel, including a Grad-model Katyusha rocket that hit an open field south of Netivot. No one was injured in the attacks.

Earlier in the day, two Islamic Jihad operatives were shot dead in the West Bank town of Kabatiya near Jenin. The IDF said troops surrounded a home in which the operatives were hiding, called on them to come out. The suspects refused and in an ensuing exchange of fire were killed.

Allah is just the name of a Beduin god taken in to label Yahweh/Jehovah. Which in turn is a Babylonian god, one of several.

Jews, Christians and Muslims sadly decided to worship this evil god (as considered by everybody, but themselves) as their only.

Iran shows off its military might

President Ahmadinejad expressed his confidence in the strength of the country's armed forces.

He said Iran was now so powerful that "none of the current world powers are capable of, and have the courage to, threaten the Iranian nation and its interests and security".

Hezbollah attack and kidnap Lebanese police officer
Thursday, 17 April, 2008 @ 9:15 PM

[link to yalibnan.com]

Beirut, Lebanon - Members of Hezbollah attacked and kidnapped a police officer in south Beirut on Thursday, marking the second attack on Lebanese police by Hezbollah in as many days, security sources reported.

On Wednesday Hezbollah forcefully freed two suspicious detainees, by surrounding the police with a mob of 100 angry Hezbollah forces, threatening to attack the policemen unless the two bearded men were immediately released.

The sources said the police officer was investigating an illegal construction site in the suburb of Ghadir when he was beaten up by two local residents.

Hizbullah members drove in, kidnapped the officer and whisked him to a Hizbullah office where he was illegally interrogated by Party officials on activities of the police force.

The officer told his superiors later Hizbullah officials set him free only because he is Shiite.

Hezbollah Attacks Police Twice

Hezbollah's latest aggressions against Lebanese citizens are another indication of the militia's inability to operate peacefully as a political organization.

Two suspicious men on motorbikes were stopped at a security checkpoint around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Qmatiyeh village, near the Druze stronghold mountain resort town of Aley, east of Beirut.

Upon being detained, one of the bearded men disobeyed the orders of the policemen and made a cell phone call. Shortly afterwards, around a hundred angry Hezbollah members surrounded the security force and freed the two men, the security sources added.

Hezbollah even recovered the bikes.

Local media had earlier said the two cyclists were arrested for failing to stop at the checkpoint.

They said police arrested them after a chase and that Hizbullah members in Qmatiyeh swiftly surrounded the security force and freed the cyclists.

Here's the TRUTH

Hamas and Hezbollah are Iranian Proxies...

Israel cannot be defeated via conventional attack.

The syrians even with new soviet anti-aircraft weapons, doesn't stand a chance.

I've spent some time looking at the syrian army and air force....their 1970s technologies will not stand up against israel.

Also Israel learned some valuable lessons in the summer 2006 conflict...they had grown complacent since their last war in lebanon in 1982...they will not make the same mistakes again.

I think the syrians are rattling swords at this point....and will not be so stupid as to start a conflict.

But, if they are indeed really filled with Islamic Suicidal Tendencies then I suspect that war will start on the 20th (Passover) yes the islamic wackos hate Israel enough to start something on this high holy day...they have done it in the past.

But, as of this moment I don't think the Syrians have the balls to launch an attack...BUT

If they do, they will see their conventional weaponry destroyed.

So what, if Hamas and Hezbollah start missle attacks simultaniously....their rockets are WW2 vintage and are fatal only if they hit within a few feet of unprotected personel.

In the summer of 2006 too many Israelis tried to carry on life as usual during rocket attacks....hopefully they will head to one of thousands of bunkers built just for that purpose this time.

Oh yes I am aware that the Nazi's and Muzzie Lovers and Communists will jump on Israel here once hostilities start....GLP is a haven and port in the storm for all anti semites...

Thats ok....

I'll be here often to put in a good word for Israel....

You see, I am a Christian from America who is one of 30-40 million who strongly support Israel....and who believes that the Bible is clear that last days events revolve around Israel.

IDF chief: Army prepared for any scenario

[link to www.ynetnews.com]

In light of alertness at northern border, difficult fighting in Gaza, soldiers ask Ashkenazi: Can we feel safe?

Ynet Published: 04.18.08, 13:05 / Israel News

IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Gabi Ashkenazi on Friday addressed the prevailing tension at Israel's northern border during an interview with IDF Radio.

Speaking to lone soldiers who participated in the show, he was asked whether citizens could feel safe despite the anxiety felt in the north of Israel.

He answered, "I think we can feel safe, we haven't recognized anything unusual on the other side of the border. However, we are prepared for any development. IDF soldiers will continue to make sure this status continues."

Alertness on the northern border has been increased recently due to the suspicion that Hizbullah would attempt an act of revenge for the assassination of its top commander Imad Mugniyah, which would lead to a severe response from Israel, and in turn perhaps a war with Syria.

Referring to the situation in Gaza, Ashkenazi said that "the fighting there is difficult, long, and demanding, but the IDF soldiers fighting there are filled with understanding and motivation to do the job well in order to provide the residents of the area with peace. We are determined to continue fighting until we stop the terrorism in Gaza."

Ashkenazi plans to celebrate Passover with Givati troops.

Syrian President Bashar Assad said earlier this week that his country was preparing for war with Israel, though chances were slim this would occur. Speaking at a conference in Damascus, Assad said, "None of us can rule out the option of war, but it is arguable whether Israel will launch war against Lebanon or Syria, or whether the United States will launch a war against Iran.

"We should analyze the situation from the perspective of American interests, because the last war in Lebanon has shown that at some point Israel wanted to stop the fighting, but was forced by the US administration to pursue it further," he stated.

This is something to ponder on this 18th day of April 2008.
- Iran is aiding the Hezbollah with many more shipments of missiles over the past several months. There are estimates of up to five times the number of missiles in the Hezbollah hands than before the previosu war.
- Iran continues to send arms to Iraqi insurgents including Al Sadr's men. Iran too has agents in Iraq to assist in causing death and destruction for U.S. forces.
- Iran keeps shipping troops and military hardware to Syria.
- Iran is training reporters for the coming Syria/Israeli war.
- Iran boldly announces that it has 6000 more centrifuges operating to enrich uranium inot a material capable of causing a nuclear reaction.
- Iran again says it will blow Israel off the map this week.
- Iran is currently involved in a large weapons procurement to the Gazans of missiles, mortars, explosives, and guns and has trained many Gazans to use new fighting tactics used by the Hezbollah. The Gazans have answered by using said weapons and tactics several times this week.
- Syria, who is in receipt of billons of dollars of military weaponry from Russia/paid for by Iran has moved five (now) divisions towards and at its borders with Lebanon and Israel knowing that Israel does not take threats lightly and is well-prepared to launch a first strike in order to protect her small nation. Assad, who has admitted to the world to being Iran's friend and ally, has consulted with and gained Iranh's approval to its actions.
- The Hezbollah have plans to attack Israel and have anounced their promise (not threat) to hit Israel in retaliation for the death of a leader whom was actually killed by Syrians. Hezbollah have already failed on one such atack (the attempted poisoning of hundreds in Tel Aviv).
WHY DOES IRAN ALLOW ALL OF THIS TO STIR UP RIGHT NOW, if Iran knows that the U.S. and Israel will not stand for it for too long before they react and take out Iran's nuclear program? Iran controls all of these puppets and some. Poking a sleeping bear with a stick will eventually get one attacked by the bear.
THE ANSWER: Because Iran has achieved its nuclear independence already and is in fact in possession of nuclear weapons, thanks to North Korea and old bombs from Russia. Therefore, Iran, is forcing this game of brinkmanship towards its final move in order to get checkmate and then ignite all war engines towards her goal of Israel's destruction and then the U.S.'s. Believe me the war is almost on and Iran is ready.

Is that based on intelligence that they are about to hit or just because of the Passover holiday in Israel. Also I believe that Hezbollah,Syria and Iran will do anything in their power to prevent Israel's 60th anniversary celebrations. I really believe in the next few days they will try something to either try and destroy Israel before the 60 th date or atleast have them in full scale war so there is no chance to celebrate. I am getting more convinced by the news I am seeing and reading that the U.S. may hit Iran after all. It seems that the support of the insurgency in Iraq and not the nukes is what may lead to a U.S. strike on Military targets in Iran. Lastly is the North Korea situation supposed to flare up again as well? What is your thoughts on all this? Again thanks for the info!

The peak time for an attack would be during Passover, just because it gives Israel's enemies some advantage.

There are crytpic messages coming out from Syria, Hezbollah, and Iran that the next war will be Israel's last and that those worried about Israel's existence should continue to ponder that thought. To me, they would love to hit Israel right before the celebration or even while George Bush is in the nation. They know too, that to wait too long will invite Israel's first strike right after the celebrations Mid-May as Assad acknowledges.

North Korea - they are well entrenched with Syria and Iran. I would not doubt for a minute that they would not stir up things on their side of Asia durng the next war. They too have something to fear if a nuclear weapon is detonated that has the plutonium signatures of their nuclear reactor. Thus, they may need to have a war to keep the international community at bay.

Syria also has weapons loaded with Sarin (a deadly toxin, even a pinhead amount is lethal) as well as chemical weapons. North Korea did allow Syria at least enouhg plutonium for one nuclear bomb, but that was stolen away in the night. There is concern that more may be in place either in Syria, Iran, or both.

Iran is thought to have purchased several russian nukes in the 1990's. Further, Iran has chemcial weapons and perhaps biological weapons now too.

Olmert cannot stay in power if he announced Iran as nuclear. Thus, he would not dare say that iran may have such weapons.

TO Military Man and all ,

adding to the poison plot today or yesterday Israel killed the mastermind of it in a raid in the West Bank.. check ynet jpost or haaretz.

also while reading the JPOST ( print) at home today in a article about the security situation now it quoted a Security Offical as saying its " not if, but where and When."Hezbollah will attack...

Military Man ,

Syria might be in posession of WMD's that belonged to Sadam it was talked about in the real press not random outlets last week? I remember hearing this a few years ago as well....

and you also said that Iran has WMD'S ??? certain about that or a guess from your info?

and Bibi in an interview in the Jpost said according to Mossad estimites there still is 2 years left before they go nuclear...

Also Olmert in an interview with Haaretz said he belives and knows Iran will not go nuclear thanks to intl support....

Hope no bombs land near me or better yet hope no war breaks out until i leave in the summer ...

But wouldnt Bibi Netanyu say somthing becuase he wants Olmert Out But in both interviews the gave for the papers they were united on Iran the only issue they are ....

Military Man - It was widely reported a couple weeks ago that upwards of 3 syrian divisions were mobilized to the lebanese border. earlier this week debka reported one additional division was mobilized to the same general area (however, debka is the only source i could find regarding that extra division) - by my math that gives us upwards of 4 Syrian divisions.

Where are you getting your info about a 5th Syrian division being moved up?? any links??

FWIW - the reports of 3 syrian division being mobilized from a couple weeks ago was also accompanied with reports that upwards of 9 syrian infantry brigades being mobilized to the border region. Is that your "5th division"??

I will get you sources when I can. There may be even more.

I'd love to see a source confirming 5+ Syrian divisions being mobilized, b/c if that's true i can almost guarantee we are going to see a conflict. According to Global Security's website, Syria's armed forces is comprised of 6-7 armored divisions and 3 mechanized divisions (does not include a special forces division and republican guard division).

[link to www.globalsecurity.org]

That's 11 total divisions. If true, it sounds like Syria has mobilized about half of its armed forces. You don't do something like that unless conflict is a VERY REAL possibility.

Israel will not act first until after May 16, 2008. Prior, they will sit and wait for the enemy.

Even if there is nothing this week, the war machine is in place and Iran and puppets intend to hit Israel this year. (Perhaps some secret opps mission explodes a few Iranian targets and Iran does not know who has done it) which could put them back a year. I know of several of those happenning over the last year in Iran and Syria where chemical weapons exploded and and missiles blew up.
