Man Hung Himself Behind Our Local Valero Gas Station A Few Days Ago...
Sorry no link, just my credibility as a long time poster on this forum. We've had numerous suicides and suicide attempts within the last two weeks. I was just curious to know if anyone else is noticing an increase in suicides in their area??

This crumbling economy combined with rising gas prices is really taking it's tole of folks it would seem in our small town...anyone else experiencing these things happening?

I can't help but wonder if the person who hung himself behind Valero was an ex disgruntled employee making the ultimate statement? Strange place to off one's self...would seem an extreme act if it was done as a statement against gas prices??

The small community I live in has a local newspaper who's top headlines usually have to do with non violent happenings, such as water district "wars" and announcements for the next board of supervisors meetings. What has been going on is very rare indeed for what is considered the norm around here...

Skyrocketing prices , falling dollar , falling home value , layoffs , war , food shortages... just turn on the evening news and it's obvious why people who were formally on the edge are getting pushed over .

What's really strange is that the multiple suicides that have been happening lately are all hangings...I'm really not quite sure what to make of this. Are people being affected this badly?? It's like the hope is gone from this small community:(

It's the sign of the times. My co-workers have been talking for weeks now about how hard life seems lately, just one stressful thing after another. What gets me through it all in one piece is knowing there are people who care about me. Some people don't have that, they have no safety net either financially or emotionally, and that must get really rough sometimes. A run of bad luck can leave you on the bottom and feeling hopeless.

This would be a good time to give encouragement to all you meet, if you are so inclined. A smile or a word could save a life these days...

We've had some strange suicides in my area ,too. One was a man ,his tow-truck and decapitation with the tow cable. A friend found him, she hasn't slept well since (can't imagine why...{sarcasm}).

So very true, and I do what I can with everyone I come across. My job puts me in touch with many people and often provides the opportunity to spread cheer to them. I can only hope that in some small way I'm able to help during these tough economic times.

I guess I was just wondering about the increase in suicides in my area and wondering if this is happening in other small communities? The reason why I say small communities, is because I believe it is these types of places that this kind of thing would really stand out above the norm, where as big cities or metropolitin areas it might happen more often, and so therefor be less noticable by the general population...Any other small towners, particularly in Ca notice an increase in this type of thing lately?

Yep...About 4,000 of us.

The guy went to do some business in the county seat, stayed there until he committed suicide.

We had a lady about 3 weeks ago "gas" herself in her garage.

Then there was the 18 year old that killed himself after thanksgiving. He got drunk and ran out into the night with sweats and a t-shirt (no shoes). He froze in a farmer's field.

It's been VERY STRANGE............

Hello,
We have had several teenage suicide deaths in the last month and my family and I were wondering what was up?? Just went to a funeral last week!! What's odd is it was from children that had things going and seemed some what normal in this day. You never know??

But that is odd in your area have you noticed a common thread?

Thanks, Sunshine

I'm really sorry to hear that Lady. I pray that his family and friends can obtain some small comfort in some way to help ease the pain of their loss.

One thing about suicides that I learned quite some time ago, based on statistics, is that men tend to take the more "violent" ways out, whereas women tend to do it less violently. You mentioned why hangings...this is why I bring this up. I dont quite understand the entire psychology behind it, but men do tend to commit suicide more violently (hanging, shooting self, running car into tree or over cliff, jump from buildings, etc), and women tend to do things like overdose on drugs, gas themselves to eternal sleep, etc).

I hope your Faith keeps you strong during these very trying times ahead of us. Blessings to you and yours. hf

Thank you for posting...

I'm wondering if the people who live in smaller communities lack the resources that larger communities and cities have for those affected by these tough economic times?

well...it's like I said, this is highly unusual for our area. Very little violence, it's the type of community where folks usually don't use too many locks as the ole saying, locks only keep honest people out, applies here.

I'm wondering if the teens are feeling the stress that the parents are faced with? I do know that jobs are difficult if not impossible to come by around here...perhaps this too is affecting the teens?

It could be that men need to go out with a 'bang' or in a more daring or brave way?? Not sure, but this seems to make more sense. Like it's not the "cowards way out" if it's a violent method??

I cling tightly to my faith, and I know I will be leaning on it heavily to get me through the things about to hit this unsuspecting planet hard.

I too pray for the families of the victims of these times we are finding ourselves in. Thank you for your kind words. And blessings to you and yours as wellrose

Predicting that people will kill themselves in reduced financial times, pretty much well makes you a seer here at GLP.
It's probably the only prediction that's right.

I wouldn't worry about it. Some people just don't have the ability to plan ahead, so that can live within their means.
There has always been a trend for people to kill themselves when things get difficult, and I suspect this will always be a trend.
All you can really do is bury or burn them.
Hope it doesn't turn out to be someone you knew.

we had a self emoliation here at a gas station. it was horrific. this guy hosed himself and his car with gasoline
and lit it. he was shouting something about having to chose between a king size peanutbutter cup and gas
and satilite bills.

Well...I'm not too sure about the "seer" part, just reporting on what is happening all around me. Did not know any of the victims thankfully, but sadly many did know them and I'm sure loved them and will miss them.

My son did lose a friend to a shooting that happened at a party during the same time period as the suicides. This story can be found at www.sacbee.com, will see if I can find the link to that story. The sad part is, the friend was trying to protect another friend that was being attacked by some party crashers. He is survived by his wife and two little ones. My son attended his funeral today. In the city where his funeral took place, a local high school was put into lock down due to 5 guns that were found on the campus...troubling times indeed:( So glad my son will be graduating in a couple of months. School is no longer a safe place to learn it would seem...

Perhaps, but sometimes a bit of comic relief is in order;) If the question was also a serious one, I'm not sure, did not see it, but rarely watch the news anymore...also do not have a local news station, just the one out of Sacramento.
