I know people forget just how close we are to chaos........
Ask anyone that’s been hit by a hurricane. It takes about 3 days for the collapse of civilization...
This doesn’t bode well. "I don't know which was scarier...the speech...or the Congress cheering it. He evoked Lincoln. Whenever a President is going to get us into serious trouble...they always use Lincoln."

Japan's hunger becomes a dire warning for other nations
April 21, 2008
MARIKO Watanabe admits she could have chosen a better time to take up baking. This week, when the Tokyo housewife visited her local Ito-Yokado supermarket to buy butter to make a cake, she found the shelves bare.
"I went to another supermarket, and then another, and there was no butter at those either. Everywhere I went there were notices saying Japan has run out of butter. I couldn't believe it — this is the first time in my life I've wanted to try baking cakes and I can't get any butter," said the frustrated cook.
Japan's acute butter shortage, which has confounded bakeries, restaurants and now families across the country, is the latest unforeseen result of the global agricultural commodities crisis.
A sharp increase in the cost of imported cattle feed and a decline in milk imports, both of which are typically provided in large part by Australia, have prevented dairy farmers from keeping pace with demand.
While soaring food prices have triggered rioting among the starving millions of the third world, in wealthy Japan they have forced a pampered population to contemplate the shocking possibility of a long-term — perhaps permanent — reduction in the quality and quantity of its food.
A 130% rise in the global cost of wheat in the past year, caused partly by surging demand from China and India and a huge injection of speculative funds into wheat futures, has forced the Government to hit flour millers with three rounds of stiff mark-ups. The latest — a 30% increase this month — has given rise to speculation that Japan, which relies on imports for 90% of its annual wheat consumption, is no longer on the brink of a food crisis, but has fallen off the cliff.
According to one government poll, 80% of Japanese are frightened about what the future holds for their food supply.
Last week, as the prices of wheat and barley continued their relentless climb, the Japanese Government discovered it had exhausted its ¥230 billion ($A2.37 billion) budget for the grains with two months remaining. It was forced to call on an emergency ¥55 billion reserve to ensure it could continue feeding the nation.
"This was the first time the Government has had to take such drastic action since the war," said Akio Shibata, an expert on food imports, who warned the Agriculture Ministry two years ago that Japan would have to cut back drastically on its sophisticated diet if it did not become more self-sufficient.

I was at my costco this AM, all rice was sold out, they also had a sign up about limits to your previously purchased amts.
Another words.. if you used to buy 1 50lb bag that is all you will be allowed to buy.
People were a bit shaken and standing around the empty pallet as I walked by.

Sam's Club on Eastern Henderson/Las Vegas also had an empty palatte where the rice should be - today 04/21/08 |

I occasionally by rice for longterm use and I haven't even noticed an increase in the price over the last couple of months. $17.99 for 50 lbs for the last few months.
I am not denying the main point in this topic but I have not seen it in my neck of the woods (Florida).
Does anyone know how long 50 lbs of rice last for an individual? |

I recall a story about more animals being sent to market now
because of the rising price of feed... so the availability of meat
may be temporary.

Anonymous Coward User ID: 418157 4/21/2008 11:40 PM | | Re: Drudge: America faces food rationing? | Quote | This (hemp) is the only solution that makes any sense - plastics, fuel, building material, rope, 100 year clothes, paper + you get flour and oil from the seed in a particular healthy balance for the human animal. I wish we wouldn't have to go through this to remember though.
The government still pays farmers enormous sums to let fields lie fallow and not plant crops. Ethanol is not the problem. Brazil has been energy self sufficient for many years by using ethanol - with no grain shortages resulting. We have an enormous capacity to produce crops for ourselves and export. All the problems we face now are manufactured.
Yes, and no. Ethanol takes tremendous amounts of FRESH WATER to produce. Also, it's an energy-consuming fuel in that it requires fuel to plant it, grow it, fertilize it, harvest it, ship it to the ethanol plant, process it, and then ship it to the fueling stations.
Corn-based ethanol is a waste of FOOD. Hemp would be a better source.
Brazil might be energy self-sufficient, but her sugar cane workers live and work under horrible conditions. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 416100 |

Are you suggesting the news about food shortages
is aimed at getting people to stock up - making food
shortages a self-fulfilling prophecy ?
or
Maybe there is something big coming down the pike
that will make a food shortage look tame.

 | | Re: Drudge: America faces food rationing? | Quote | Some thoughts, from an economist's point of view:
* There really is a looming shortage. In fact, there's a shortage of "cereals" today. It's only a half percent between global supply and demand, but a half percentage point is serious when you're talking about 6+ billion people.
* Stored stocks of rice, wheat, corn, etc., are at the lowest level in our recent globalized history.
* There's not an immediate real shortage in the USA. What you're seeing is a combination of panic buying, panic bulk buying by small restaurants and resellers who get staples at CostCo/Smart & Final/Sam's Club, and a run on commodities that is seeing major food packagers (think Rice-a-Roni or Uncle Ben's) buying as much as they can before prices go even higher. This is the same way airlines try to buy jet fuel months or even years in advance when prices are on the way up.
* But there could be a real shortage of staples in the USA, and it will only take a "perfect storm" like a major port shutdown (Los Angeles) or earthquake that knocks out the main rail lines (Cajon Pass, the nation's busiest rail junction, sits on the San Andreas Fault alongside Interstate 15), or a pandemic that shut down the trade from a major food exporter such as China or even Vietnam.
* It's smart to have several months of dry foods in your pantry (along with ample supplies of those big Sparkletts jugs of drinking water, unless you're on a well in the country). But it's even better to have a good, safely stored supply of seeds for your garden. Make sure you have a combination of long-lasting protein, such as potatoes, along with a wide variety of vegetables and greens. Gardening is also fun.
* If you have a backyard, get a few chickens. The eggs will keep you happy for years. If you've got an acre or two, get a few dairy goats or a cow for a free, fresh supply of milk and cream and cheese -- you'll have to learn to make the cheese, but that's fun, too. Goats will also eat all the weeds!
* Go to a site like [link to survivalblog.com] for info on DEFENDING your food supplies, when the Sh*& Hits the Fan. |
