Why? Because all anyone has to do is cut out some of the CRAP they eat (the fast foods, the prepped and packaged foods, the condiments, the chips and sodas and fancy water) for a few days at a time, and they CAN afford to put aside beans, rice, flour, sugar, salt, powdered milk, shortening and veggie oils, powdered eggs, etc.
Give up something you do not NEED, and you will be able to afford more of what you do need.
Buy FRESH ingredients and cook a few meals from scratch, and you've saved enough for several bags of rice or beans.
If I can do it, anyone can do it. Quoting: RHSC 416100

Some thoughts, from an economist's point of view:
* There really is a looming shortage. In fact, there's a shortage of "cereals" today. It's only a half percent between global supply and demand, but a half percentage point is serious when you're talking about 6+ billion people.
* Stored stocks of rice, wheat, corn, etc., are at the lowest level in our recent globalized history.
* There's not an immediate real shortage in the USA. What you're seeing is a combination of panic buying, panic bulk buying by small restaurants and resellers who get staples at CostCo/Smart & Final/Sam's Club, and a run on commodities that is seeing major food packagers (think Rice-a-Roni or Uncle Ben's) buying as much as they can before prices go even higher. This is the same way airlines try to buy jet fuel months or even years in advance when prices are on the way up.
* But there could be a real shortage of staples in the USA, and it will only take a "perfect storm" like a major port shutdown (Los Angeles) or earthquake that knocks out the main rail lines (Cajon Pass, the nation's busiest rail junction, sits on the San Andreas Fault alongside Interstate 15), or a pandemic that shut down the trade from a major food exporter such as China or even Vietnam.
* It's smart to have several months of dry foods in your pantry (along with ample supplies of those big Sparkletts jugs of drinking water, unless you're on a well in the country). But it's even better to have a good, safely stored supply of seeds for your garden. Make sure you have a combination of long-lasting protein, such as potatoes, along with a wide variety of vegetables and greens. Gardening is also fun.
* If you have a backyard, get a few chickens. The eggs will keep you happy for years. If you've got an acre or two, get a few dairy goats or a cow for a free, fresh supply of milk and cream and cheese -- you'll have to learn to make the cheese, but that's fun, too. Goats will also eat all the weeds!
* Go to a site like [ link to survivalblog.com] for info on DEFENDING your food supplies, when the Sh*& Hits the Fan. Quoting: Judas Goat
Yeppers! I truly believe it won't be one thing, but a combination of things that will cause the main trouble. This is the set-up, then will come the pitch. Good points!
To those who call BS on this thread, I can understand why. But I would caution that this particular "DOOM" will be relative slow and will build over the next couple of years. Just watch and prepare, or not, as you will. This one you will see coming. No prophet needed. |

Okay so "excess liquidity" was first soaked up by the stock market, then that went bust in 2001, then the "excess liquidity" started chasing real estate, creating another bubble which is going bust, are we seeing that "excess liquidity" chasing food commodities and creating a bubble of inflated values now? Am I onto something or am I clueless?
Absolutely bang on Mercury. It sounds as though you would enjoy Robert Prechter's famous book "The Turn In The Tial Wave". It's worth reading if you can get hold of a copy. Quoting: sillygalah 367923
The bursting of subprime bubble led to a liquidity crisis, in other words nobody was lending money to each other in the money markets. Thats why Fed Reserve has lowered rates and bank of England is injecting money into the system. This money isnt going back into mortgage markets, bond markets, the stock markets....its difficult to tell for sure if its going into commodities or if the price rises are caused by real lack of supply. In a recession banks typically dont want to start throwing around too much money because they have to worry about business loans going bad. |

Canned food will still be fine years after you buy it. I've been practicing food storage for years and regularly eat canned foods that are 3 years old or more. |

Just hunt. Bag a 300lb deer or two a season. Who needs bread and rice Quoting: Anonymous Coward 367687
Well, here's a dumbass who thinks deer weigh 300 pounds. You don't go into the woods very much or you would know better. That also means you will probably starve since you know so little about deer, you won't be able to "bag" one.

First of all, you don't have 75 years of food stocked up, so cut the bullshit.
Second, I have lots of food stored....at least 1.5-2 years for myself and the wife. We plan on living through the nightmare staying away from the rest of the population that are starving to death. After it's all over, and the rest of the world as "moved on" to the grave, I'll come out and plant my stored non-hybrid seeds and start all over again. |

First let me know what food you have that will last for 75 years.
Second, after a while people will have figured out how to get by and the society would have stabilized. All bets are off for the "Mad Max" scenario. I don't think there is a prepping that can be done to ensure you would survive a complete and longterm global breakdown unless you are an extreme survivalist.
I think people have to prepare for the worst but the most likely we will experience a severe recession. There could be shortages during even good years (see Katrina). Everyone should prepare for a Katrina type event in their local area. |
