I am getting my preparations together as best as I can.

What are heirloom seeds? Where is the best place(online or local store) to get them?

I am getting my shorter-term SHTF food stores and other preps together, but am just starting my preps for longer-term TEOTWAWKI.

I can garden as I have helped others do so in the past and am learning about it and getting tools. It looks like the shit is going to end the fan starting hard in mid-2008, and we are going to need to be ready to plant and hunt in 2009.

Granny's is a good one. Dollar stores would NOT have them.

State Revises Hormone Label for Milk

By Andrew Martin
New York Times
January 18, 2008

On Thursday, the state issued new guidelines that required that the labels not be misleading and that there be a paper trail to verify the claims.

For instance, a label cannot read "No BST," which is short for bovine somatotropin, since the hormone occurs naturally in cows. A dairy can, however, label its milk as coming "from cows not treated with rBST" - for recombinant bovine somatotropin, the synthetic version - as long as a disclaimer is included that says that "No significant difference has been shown between milk derived from rBST-treated and non-rBST-treated cows." (A dairy can preface the disclaimer with "The F.D.A. says.")

The decision was hailed by some dairies and consumer groups, who had complained that the planned ban disregarded consumer demand.

The state's agriculture secretary, Dennis Wolff, issued a notice of the ban in October, arguing that the labels were confusing and impossible to verify.

The ban was supposed to go into effect on Feb. 1. It caused such an uproar that Gov. Edward G. Rendell's office intervened. On Thursday, in a statement, the governor said, "The public has a right to complete information about how the milk they buy is produced."

"Supreme Court Backs Monsanto in Seed Patent Case

By Glenn Hess
Chemical & Engineering News
January 9, 2008

Justices uphold lower appeals court ruling in dispute over reuse of patented biotech seeds

The Supreme Court, without comment, ruled in favor of Monsanto on Jan. 7 and upheld a lower court ruling that penalized a Mississippi farmer for reusing genetically modified soybean seeds.

Monsanto was awarded $375,000 in damages after successfully suing Homan McFarling in 1999 for violating its patents by replanting Roundup Ready soybean seeds.

McFarling saved 1,500 bushels of seeds from his 1998 soybean crop and planted those seeds in 1999. He did the same thing the following year, saving soybeans from his 1999 crop and planting them in 2000.

Monsanto sued, arguing that a technology agreement the farmer signed restricted him to using the seeds for only one growing season. McFarling's lawyers argued that patent law does not allow Monsanto "to control the future use of seeds that were a natural product of the seeds that he had bought and planted."

But the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., sided with Monsanto, ruling that the "the licensed and patented product (the first-generation seeds) and the goods made by the licensed product (the second-generation seeds) are nearly identical copies."

The Supreme Court's affirmation of the lower court rulings helps ensure "continued investment into the kind of research and development necessary to keep growers on the cutting edge of productivity," Monsanto said in a statement.

"We believe strong intellectual property protection will encourage the investment needed to maintain continued crop improvement," the company stated."

Heirloom seeds will produce seeds that can be saved and replanted the following year, whereas GMO seeds are only good for one season and do not produce viable seeds for future crops.

I bought all mine online.....most mainstream store bought packets are GMOs.

It don't matter what kind of seeds you buy. just stock up.

you are asking why don't it really matter?

Monsanto has done ther job. if you remember in the viseo, the pure corn is no more, the pollon spreads and infect the pure seeds. :(

Re: What are 'heirloom seeds' and where is the best place to get them?
Heirloom seeds are Genetically stable Land-races.

What that means is they are strains of a plant that express certain traits and these traits are homogenous.

So all of the seeds that come from the next generation will always have the same traits.

They are a Stable Variety.

A hybrid is when you take two stable variety's, two land-races and you breed them together.

When you cross breed them like this you end up with a gene pool that has a blending of both traits.

But, the next generation is NOT blended. It starts to drift between the mother parents traits and the father parents traits.

You end up with seeds that have to much genetic variance.

Non Hybrid ( pure) strain seeds
 Quoting: NightWisp

That's the answer, right there.

Heirloom seeds are from Non Hybrid plants.

Heirloom seeds are pure strain, the seeds out of your crop will breed true next year.

Most seeds from local stores are hybrid varieties. Plant seeds from your crop and you never know what you'll end up with as far as variety or quality out of them.
