Re: HELP! I'm On The Verge Of Being Homeless
Scorpio's post was good. It's about attitude. Wishing someone bad things when they insulted you is not the right kind of attitude. You need to change.

If you pray sincerely, God will put people in your life that will help you.

Your at a crossroad where your needed somewhere else. Go places, walk around. Go to the unemployment office.

Humble your self. Be honest on your applications. Say yes to bankruptcy, and state it was a nasty devorce. I interview many people, and Honesty makes a very good impression with me, especially if it deals with drugs, alcohol, ect. The point is the person is honest and is trying to change, or has changed. The record remains, but I understand. Most people do.

Ideas - Want adds, radio stations, walking Dogs, house sitting, go to all kinds of different churches, they may have a job for you!

Schools, daycare, helping with children. Homeless shelters. Home depot, Wallgreens, Luckys, safeway - any job!!

You may be elgible for Social Security due to your disability.

Every day you must go to a place and fill out an application, or go to a church ect....

If you believe in a "God" and the power loves you, good things will happen.

Act as if your fresh out of college. Clean Shave, well dressed.

I really feel for you, and hope you have the energy to do this! Read Scorpios post again, Hell, print it out and read it every morning before you go looking for a job.
Just a Thought.

Have any of you been homeless? How did you survive it?

Thanks

I'm 52 years old and lost my job due to a serious illness. While I had insurance to cover almost all the expenses of the illness, I had to drain my 401k and savings account for living expenses etc for about the three years during the time I was ill. If that was'nt enough, my wife maxed out the credit cards and ran off with some other dude.

Needless to say, I had to file bankruptcy. I can't get a job due to the huge work gap attributed to my illness, and regardless of what the government says, there is age discrimination.

Nobody will rent to me as I have almost no money, no job, and really lousy credit due to the bankruptcy.

Wow. You spent 401k in 3 years? When you knew you were ill and off work? Most people don't even dream of having that kind of money their entire life! What did you waste....I mean spend it on?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 421973

you idiot-a "401k" is a retirement savings plan, not $401,000.00

now-a-days most employers won't hire anyone with credit problems. My bf has tried to find work for ten years now-he previously spent 15 years taking care of his mom-no work history, has a bad back-diabetes-no one will hire him. However he's a money whiz and has gotten my credit history superior-has saved me thousands of dollars over the years-but-that can't get him a job-go figure.
OP keep plugging away-if you have no criminal background-maybe the night shift at the 7-11 type stores or those quicki mart type places?

Yes. Been there. Done that. The bad stretch of luck. Homeless. No income. Survived on fish, rabbits and a few veggies. Best thing that ever happened to me. Single parent, and at that time my son was less than 3 years old. Very humbling experience, and even hard as it was at the time, why is it that those memories, those times of doing without, surviving from within are the times that I hold so dear? I don't know your plight, but I have had the same feelings, the anger, hopelessness feelings that go along with it. In my ever so humble opinion, I feel you are are about on stage three, with only one stage left to go. Acceptance. That is when change will indeed come upon you. Turn over a new leaf, so to speak. I'd just about bet you are about to experience change, and change for the better. Why? Because that is what I "choose" to believe. I also believe what we are living right now is the result of our past thoughts and words. Kinda gives new meaning to that phrase "be careful what you ask for...you just might get it" . Another thing I have become used to. When life deals me a shit sandwich, I find a way to make 'patte. Such is life. The good news? It WILL work out. That you can rest assured. My prayers are with you my brother, and I look forward to hearing to share with us exactly "how" things did work out for you when they do. They WILL!

Peace

Re: HELP! I'm On The Verge Of Being Homeless
This happened to my brother and he committed himself as he was living under a bridge in northern ontario in november.. He basically had 2 options, jail or a nut house.. There was no room for him anywhere and due to his past drug use, in and out of jail, theivery etc.. no one wanted him..nor could put him up..

Once in the nuthouse they somehow got him hooked up with a job and a single 8x12 room to rent.. I think the counselors there helped him somehow with work through some government program but im not too sure.. I think to get in though he said he was suicidal, and im sure he was as hes tried before.. But anyways, I dont know what else you could do and being as Canada, and usa are a bit different, Im not eally sure cause up here you wouldn't be denied social assitance, but you wouldn't get enough every month to rent jack shit..

Lots of people commenting on this thread have apparently never been *completely knocked down* in life. (They literally have no idea of OP's state, physically or mentally.)

To you folks, I simply say: You should thank God you've never been there before.

To OP, I would just like to say: Hang in there, buddy. It sounds like you've been very practical in investigating a lot of the possibilities, and that's great. Just keep trying, and I believe things will get better for you. You indicated that you've received some church help, and that's good. They can be a valuable short-term source of assistance. (If you've exhausted your stay at one church, then consider moving on to another church who might be able to help.) See if your local or state government has any resources that might be able to help you. If you can live in your car temporarily, see if you can get any kind of job. Even a low-paying job will help a lot, and then, hopefully, you can get on your feet from there.

Once again, hang in there, buddy. I really hope things will get better for you soon.

Re: HELP! I'm On The Verge Of Being Homeless
Get a job in a group home. They have live in positions. Credit check is not needed but back ground is, (no pedo's ect). There are many different types of group homes. You will need to be trained in CPR, first aid and giving medications (minimal education usually provided by the prospective employer.) If you know a little child psychology your set. Redirection, positive reinforcement, time out. Try not to work with troubled youth. They are angry and tend to be highly manipulative. They can make false abuse claims when they are pissed off at you for not letting them stay up late ect. The abuse claim false or true, your employer has to believe the child, and it would be grounds for immediate termination. The troubled teens know this and they manipulate this highly. Handicapped kids would be a better bet to work with. There is also adult mentally handicapped group homes that have live in positions. You work 4-5 all nighters a week. Like 10 PM to 7AM-ish.

You definetly need to talk to a lawyer or paralegal who knows Social Security disability.

Find one close to where you are. Volunteers maybe. Some will be willing to be paid when you are from SS.

Bob's right, it really does suck.

Best thing you can do is whatever it takes not to become homeless in the first place, it's hard to climb out.

Re: HELP! I'm On The Verge Of Being Homeless
when i found myself homeless i enrolled in adult highschool (using a false address. once this was done i easily got a room at the ymca with the couple bucks left that i had. that gave me an adress which allowed me to apply for welfare. once that was cleared i quit the school (i already had my diploma + partial college) and found a job quite easily since i now had a phone and an address(fry cook) . i got a second job soon afterwards (dishwasher). i had my own apartment in about 4 months time. quite the second job and the rest is history. that was some twenty five years ago.

my advise today would be to get a cell phone with a pay as you go account. find an address you can use for mail (friends or family). and start small. labour jobs or kitchen work. both of which they expect crack heads so if your're anywhere decent they'll be glad to have you regardless of your situation. if you look at all of this as an experience you should be able to work your way through it. i think for myself it was a good way to learn some valuable lessons. today i'm far better off than many of friends who have great jobs. why? because i never got credit cards and never lived beyond my means because of the above. today i got money in the bank and have no debts to anyone. i can do what i want even though most would look at me and think i still live on the street. lol.

good luck with your trial. prove the universe wrong and be strong.

another good thing about kitchen work is that alot of places provide a basic uniform and food. both of which cut down on expenses if you're trying to save. because lets face it besides food and place to sleep there isn't really that much more people really NEED. good luck

Re: HELP! I'm On The Verge Of Being Homeless
You can still move down to Florida being a US citizen...but what about a Swedish guy?
I (a graphic artist; no drugs/no alcohol) had to live in a cellar in the winter...and people tried to throw me out from there into -20 C ; they would rather see me die than survive in that tiny cell...

I bought a tent and went to the woods; at least the animals were very kind; you can survive IF the climate is on your side (in a tent) although you need a place where you can leave your books and stuff...after years my situ is not really solved living on the edge month after month...

Now I believe one of the biggest EVIL in the world is RENT; you always have to worry how to pay it when you're in a dire situation.

In the US you can still move down to a warmer place and meditate/survive; here in Sweden one can easily die of cold during 6 months and we have a much worse apartment renting system; you can NEVER EVER really buy an apartment; you ALWAYS have to pay rent even when you deposited approx. 100.000 USD - we have a totally inhuman system here.

Hope you can solve your situation; good luck!

Peace

By the way, I survived 4 years "illegally"; I looked foe empty aluminium cans and left them back; what I did was to edit 0,5 on the receipt to 8,5 with a tiny ink pen lol - it was before the IAN code on the empty can receipts.

In an absolute nasty situation you could do that or something unpersonel and hurt the dirty Earth Matrix; later you can pay back something to charity. (I did)

When you're totally broke you can start to look for those aluminium cans; you can get some cash fast; or play a guitar for money...

Living in a tent in a secret area could be quite pleasant as long as the temperature is above the freezing point; after that it's pretty scarry!

Re: HELP! I'm On The Verge Of Being Homeless
As a resident of Minneapolis, I was somewhat staggared to hear the new statistics out of our local school districts.

In the 2006-2007 school year, there was 600 students in the Minneapolis school district which were classified as homeless. Either living in homeless shelters or out on the streets.

In the 2007-2008 school year, there are over 1500 students in the Minneapolis school district who are classified as homeless, living in shelters or on the streets.

The Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St Paul is an area of over 3 million people. That amounts to about 1% of the population of the US.

The Minneapolis school district represents less than half the population of the metro area.

So in a school district which amounts to less than half of one percent of the US populatation, there is over 1500 kids getting an education who are living on the streets or homeless shelters.

And what about the homeless kids who don't make their way to the public school. And what about the homeless people who aren't kids or don't have kids? They ain't counted, and society might not look at them as kindly.

An absolute travesty.

Re: HELP! I'm On The Verge Of Being Homeless
OP -

I'm very sorry to hear of the situation you are in and can certainly empathize with you as the past 5 years of my life have also been pretty rough (putting it mildly!). My faith in God and the resulting hope for my future, whatever that may be, has been the only thing that has kept me from "pulling the plug".

Here are a few more suggestions for you ...

1. Talk you the "Job and Family Services" office of your county government. They can get you setup with food stamps (actually no longer "stamps" but a debit card that they automatically "recharge" every month). They can also give you information about local food banks and other organizations/groups/agencies that can help you. There IS help available,,, you just have to know where to find it.

2. Are you an honorably-discharged veteran? If so I know, from experience, that there is assistance available for you.

First - Contact your county's "Veterans Service Representative" (look in the phone book under the county government listings). They have funds available to help veterans in need (they helped me with a few mortgage payments and utility bills). I suspect they would be able to help you with rent money and would also provide you with valuable information.

Second - Contact the nearest VA Medical center or local VA outplacement clinic. As an honorably-discharged vet with a financial hardship they will provide you with free (that's FREE) medical care - not even a copay but if you need a prescription they will charge you $8.00 I had to take advantage of the services they offer and the treatment and consideration I received was absolutely fantastic!

Third - If there is a "Volunteers of America" in your area you may consider talking with them as they may be able to help you out.

3. When you are able to get into a new residence you will have to get gas and electric service. Once you are hooked up with these contact your local "Job and Family Serevices" office and ask them how to go about getting on the HEAP program (HEAP stands for Home Energy Assistance Program,,, but you don't have to be in a "home" to get it). Under this program (it may be called something different where you live) you only have to pay a percentage of your monthly income toward your utility bills - if you have no income, your bill for the month is $0. The amount you owe still accumulates but at least they won't cut your services if you are unable to pay the entire (or any of) month's bill.

4. Also talk to your phone company as they may offer a financial hardship program.

5. Talk to your credit card companies about your situation and they will put you on a reduced payment, reduced interest rate, no late charges plan for a year to help you get back on your feet.

6. And last, but certainly not least say a prayer God and thank Him for all that he has given you over the years and ask Him for guidance and for strength to endure your hardship.

Keep the faith and hang tough,,, your life may not be quite what it was before but you will survive!

Also, I absolutely understand the problems you are facing of age and employment gaps. I just turned 62 and have finally accepted the fact that I'm out of the running for any decent paying corporate job. A bitter pill to swallow but that's life. I used to make in the $60-70K range,,, and now I just started a job that will pay about $25K per year. So much for the nice little house with the white picket fence and kids and dog.

Best wishes to you!

Re: HELP! I'm On The Verge Of Being Homeless
First of all, I am so sorry for your problems and while this certainly doesn't help we are all 1 paycheck or illness away from the curb. You just got there faster. Most of us here struggling are hanging on by our fingernails money-wise with no resources.

You didn't mention kids I know with children having to face homelessness it i a crying shame in a country like this that hands out money left and right to other countries before seeing all our citizens are helped first.

Be that as it may, there is a lot of help out there when kids are concerned, the gov't does it's best to see them off the streets as well as any charities they have going in your neck of the woods. Without kids it's a blessing (because they don't have to suffer on the streets with you) but we all know help for a homeless single guy is very hard to get.

Government is very slow to help, things are backed up because you've got far too little ppl handling way to vast of a workload, so deserving citizens like yourself, who have paid their dues (taxes all your life, helping others, contributing to charities as you can etc when you were better off) have nowhere to turn when they fall on hard times.

I am in my 50's and know how it is with age discrimination, they want young kids that they can get away with paying them far less and they are not a drain on their health insurance (if the job offers any). I am glad to hear Gov't and other institutions will accept a UPS address. Before, no address no job, no gov't aid because they wanted to know you lived somewhere.

I have a lot of sympathy and hope you can get some ,kind of help where you can get off the streets fast. I do know the Salvation Army has a history of helping the homeless, you are in your 60's and would not be in your situation if your luck had not turned it's back on you.

For the ignorant person who was rude about your 401K, they need to wise up. In the good days I contributed to a 401K myself but after a few months I had to get out. I needed to money I was depositing NOW not 100 years down the road. I paid a penalty. Well that's life. You need the money, you do what you have too. My daughter is closing hers as well for the same reason.

I don't know the resources in your hometown but maybe you could go to the library and look some things up. My sister goes to the library for her internet access because she can't afford a landline for dialup. You get 1/2 hr at a time but I am sure if no one else was there at the time you could get a longer time.

I hope you can keep your cellphone. You can get one of those you buy the minutes as you need them. PPL need a number to get hold of you if they have an offer of work, or aid in other ways, that they need to contact you for.

I hope soon you can show up here and report that you have a place to stay, a job and can get back on your feet again. We older ppl are falling thru the cracks of society these days and like I said before we paid our dues and taxes, now it's only fair that we should get some help back.

Stay safe my friend and well hf hf hf

First of all, I wish to thank all the kind people who contributed to this thread.

To all of the knuckleheads who knocked me on my 401K.

Thirty percent of it was wiped away due to early withdrawal penalties and taxes. Half went to my ex wife as I live in a community property state. The rest was spent on necessities, not luxury items!

For all the assholes who stomped on me...I will see you in hell as I will be there shortly. I'll be waiting for you!

Hi, I hope you are still around to read this.
If you have a degree then you can work abroad and teach English. I worked abroad for about 4 years in Korea, China and Thailand. I met many people in their 50s and 60s teaching English.
I suggest South Korea as a good place to start. They are desperate for teachers and will refund your airfare and give you an apartment for a one year contract. You'll be able to save BIG TIME and get yourself back on your feet. You do not need any prior teaching experince. A university degree is required for the working visa.
There are thousansa of Westerners working in asia as teachers.
Can you raise the airfair to get out there?

Bingo. If you're about to be homeless, get an apartment. If you have a computer and pay for the internet, you can afford one. If you're at the library, go get a job. It's not that hard.

This might sound funny. but it's what I would do.

I would find a job doing anything that pays...
Then save up some cash for a airplane ticket to....

Drum roll on this one!

The people are nice and you don't need money to live with them and they will take you in. And love you... Just make sure you don't piss them off or they might eat you.

I wish I had money to send you.
But good people seem to be broke.

I knew I should have been a rap star... sigh.

And yeah I really would go tribal.
Have you seen this show...

When that guy leaves they cry....
They really know how to love people there.

I think we should ask again who is more civil. Them or US?

Peace be with you and keep your thought in the light.

You said your using a friends computer and it seems like a lot from all your post. Ask him for a favor. Crash at his place and start busting butt for a job. Hell, I would work at McDonalds before I went poor. Wash cars, whatever.
