Dr. George Plain, head of the County-City Health Department, who had helped me locate the birth certificate of George Seaton, the scriptwriter of The Song of Bernadette, came to mind. In learning of the drownings on campus during the time the Grotto was being built, he had expressed an interest in knowing of any others I might run across to add to his records. I called to ask him if he knew of another way, other than skimming the newspaper headlines, that I might pursue this latest quest.
Without hesitation, he suggested my checking the County Coroner's records. He explained that the death certificates of a normal death would be signed by an attending physician and would be too numerous to track down without the name of the deceased. However, any accidental deaths, such as drownings, would require an examination by a coroner and those records would be on file.
The County Coroner had only current records which were kept in his office. He said he had no idea where the old records would be. The County/City Archivist who had given me other good suggestions that had produced information on St. Angela's Island agreed that Dr. Plain's suggestion would be the best way to approach it. He then added that I had come along at just the right time. He was in the midst of organizing a lot of old county records in a new archive location. In a few months he would have the coroner's records available to researchers for the first time. It looked like a whole new area to explore before I tackled the actual legend in earnest. Since the line in the newspaper article linked the Indian legend with the so-called curse on the lakes (using the word "perhaps"), I felt it should be proven or eliminated first.
Once again, I found myself venturing into the unknown, researching musty old ledgers containing the coroner's records. One could see by their dusty condition that they had not seen the light of day for a long time. To simplify my search, I worked from 1932 backward since the 1932 "one death a year curse on the lakes" article had said, ". . . up until recently the drownings had occurred with noteworthy regularity."
It seemed highly unlikely that the comment could be factual but having proven two drownings in the lake in one year while the Grotto was being built, I could not just assume that it was a fabricated statement. Fortunately the ledger pages were plainly marked with the cause of death and the place of death. Even without a name to go on, I could easily locate any drownings or accidents associated with Notre Dame or St. Mary's. I found one drowning in 1931, none in '30 and then three in a row, during the years ,1929, 1928 and 1927 then no more for another 5 years. In 1922, 1919, 1915, 1914, 1912, and 1905 another six drownings occurred.

A: Steffey's shoe, described as a plaid-lined brown moccasin, was found Jan. 23 by a maintenance employee after he drained the door well outside the utility room.

what other pexplanation is there for them failing to recover the slipper that was on the college property sitting in the door well, so the slipper was that heavy it sunk into the shallow water of the door well?

Smiley Face Murders Update, Cryptic Messages From Killers

In Duluth, Minnesota, at the site of two drownings of University of Minnesota Duluth students, is a smiley face and cryptic symbols and quotations painted on a bridge that matches other scenes in Minneapolis and La Crosse, Wisconsin and Columbus Ohio and others.
The last known drowning in Duluth occurred in 2004. The smiley face and writings were painted on the bridge that was re-done in 2002. So the smiley face can't be any older than that.
The writings explain why the killers are drowning drunk white male college students, and also explains why some of the smiley faces have devil horns.
Clues left at Duluth drownings
Ken Christiansen, 19, died in Duluth's Chester Creek on Friday, April 13, 2001. Christiansen died on Good Friday, the day of rememberance of Jesus dying on the cross. There is a blue cross and the phrase, "Jesus saves" next to the smiley face.
The phrase "You cant's see what you're not looking for" is painted at scene of the drowning. There is a smiley face inside the letter "o" in the phrase, "You can't see what you're not looking for."
The name Christiansen has "chrisitian" in it. "The Chrisitan has long been dead," quote from a Gary Snyder poem had been written under the Chester Creek bridge. [Gary Snyder poems]
Gary Snyder is a buddhist and embraces other religions that are similar such as Native American and Witchcraft.
In the "Redskins" chapter of the book, Earth House, Snyder wrote "Most tribes apparently achieved these results simply through yogic-type disciplines....." and "One religion tradition of this communion with nature which has survived into historic Western times is what has been called Witchcraft. The altered and pelted figure painted on the cave wall of Trois Freres, a shaman-dancer-poet, is a prototype of Shiva and the Devil."
Snyder refers to this "altered" "painted" figure as the "Devil." This may explain why 9 out of 22 smiley faces have devil horns.
In describing this painted altered devil, Snyder wrote, "the Devil appeared in the likeness of a pretty boy...."

Hiawatha and Columbus connections
At the scene of a drowning in La Crosse, Wisconsin there is a large statue of Hiawatha.
Native American links
There are many Native American clues connected to the Midwest drownings. They are far too coincidental not be connected.

- The word, 'Sinsinawa' at a drowning in Iowa
- Chris Jenkins dressed as a Native American on the night he was drowned in Minneapolis
- Many drownings have occurred near a Columbus, Hudson, Native American (Hiawatha) symbol, street, statue, etc.
Christopher Columbus is a person in U.S. history hated by many Native Americans because of his cruel treatment of them. This may be why 'Columbus' has shown up as a clue left at the scene of drownings. Columbus also represents the "white man's" takeover of Native American lands. Because of this, Columbus would also be hated by a Snyder-type cult.
An interesting fact about the bloodhound that located the scent of Josh in Collegeville, Minnesota and Chris Jenkins in Minneapolis, is that the scents of both victims were tracked to a Catholic church on the St. Johns campus in Collegeville. This campus has a Knights of Columbus chapter.
Looking for Hiawatha connections to other drownings, we found a Hiawatha Street in Columbus, Ohio near where Brian Shaffer, an Ohio State University medical student went missing April 2, 2006.
In Duluth, near the smiley face is the word "Ugly" with the "U" being red and shaped like a horseshoe and the rest of the word being gray color. The Ohio State University colors are gray and red and their stadium is called "The Horseshoe" because of its "U" shape. Their stadium looks like a big red "U", just like the one at Chester Creek in Duluth.

Many investigators believe that the drowning of 19-year-old Ohio University student Keith Noble and the disappearance of Brian Shaffer are related.
Streets named "High" are at the locations where both victims were last seen. This street name is also in Duluth near Chester Creek and is near other locations of drownings.
Since quotations from author/poet Gary Snyder were found at the Duluth location of two drownings, the killers may be using Snyder's writings as a demented template for the killings.
The Smiley Face Killers are a cult whose mission is to destroy people (generally white people) they view as being capitalistic and who do not conform to their way of thinking. (See Snyder's poem Smokey The Bear and A Curse On The Men.)
They view humans as less superior than plants and animals. They believe humans hinder life on Earth. (See the book Back On Fire and essay Energy is Eternal Delight.)
They view white college men as capitalists and the source of the problems of the U.S. and around the world. They are compelled to murder these men and believe they are doing the world a tremendous service.
They especially resent white capitalist men who "drink to it" as written about in the poem Money Goes Upstream.
The Smiley Face Killers focus on Snyder's writings as their religion/lifestyle and they could belong to any race, including white. Snyder's writings focus around Native American religion and Buddhism, but also have a mix of other religions as well. Snyder even quotes the Bible occasionally, but is clearly anti-Christian.
Because they feel the need to kill white males, they must do it in a way that they will not be caught. At the same time, they do have a radical message to preach, thus the reason to leave painted messages and taunts i.e., "You can't see what you're not looking for."
The reason for the smiley face is to be comic as indicated in Snyder's Smokey The Bear poem. The smiley face is also the "Face" and the "quiet smile" of those dead "mortals" as indicated in the poem Maitreya The Future Buddha.
The deaths do not happen during full moons. Probably to better conceal the killers.
The Duluth writings are a cryptic link to the Chris Jenkins murder in Minneapolis. The word "Ally" appears next to the smiley face in Duluth and had been written by the same person (same hand writing) who quoted the Snyder poem about killing young white men.
Snyder had a poem called "The Dead by the Side of the Road" which seems to be the template for the Chris Jenkins homicide. Of the many published poems by Gary Snyder, this one happens to be the one published in Minnesota by Ally Press. Too coincidental to not be connected.
Chris Jenkins' body was found in the Mississippi River in Minneapolis just a few miles north of Highway 5, which also acts as an Interstate. He was drowned on Halloween and was wearing a Native American costume with a red feather. The feather was found using a bloodhound next to drops of Chris' blood.
There are many connections between the Chris Jenkins murder, the Snyder poems, and what is written in Duluth -- Snyder's writings, Native American, red feather, Interstate Highway 5, Halloween, Dead by the Side of the Road poem, Ally, Ally Press, ect.
At Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis, there is another Hiawatha statue. Minnehaha Park is almost exactly between where the bodies of Chris Jenkins and Chris Norby were found in the Mississippi River and Interstate Highway 5. There is a Hiawatha Avenue and a Columbus Avenue that runs almost the entire length between Highway 5 and the area of where their bodies were found.
The writings at the other drowning scenes should begin to make sense once applied to Snyder's writings.

The Dealers of Death Gang claims involvement in the Smiley Face Murders

After three months of research into the case, Milwaukee Magazine has learned a gang called the “Dealers of Death” claims involvement in the deaths of some of these men. Convicted murderer Jeramy Alford, who is also a suspect in a river death that police now believe is a homicide, told the FBI last year that the gang had murdered 40 of the men. One admitted gang member: a man nicknamed “Zmiley.”
In a letter obtained by Milwaukee Magazine, the FBI said there’s no evidence the gang exists, but admits Alford discussed the gang. (Both the FBI and the New York cops talked to Alford.) Milwaukee Magazine also has discovered documents from the New Brighton, Minn., police department in which two men associated with Alford, including Zmiley, admit belonging to the Dealers of Death.
Gannon’s team seems to have developed the smiley face theory at least in part after interviewing Alford. The team then talked to the FBI, which made an attempt to investigate, but not enough to satisfy Gannon (see “Sensenbrenner and the FBI,” page 76).
He may have a point. Milwaukee Magazine has interviewed police in Iowa and Minnesota and examined investigative documents in New Brighton, all of which paints a portrait of a gang called the Dealers of Death with links to Jeramy Alford.
The Alford brothers are from rural Iowa, near Cedar Rapids, which is 75 miles from East Dubuque. They’d also lived in the Minneapolis area, sometimes shuttling back and forth between states.
“They were a transient family who became well-known to us,” says Detective Bob Knoop of the Williamsburg, Iowa, police department. “They lived in subsidized housing and then in a trailer park. We had been watching them for illegal drug activity. Jeramy was one of those guys who couldn’t keep out of the way of the police.”
In 2005, Knoop says, Jeramy Alford was arrested for harboring runaways. Police discovered he’d branded one of them, using a hot razor to create the beginnings of a five-point star. “He told them he would take them to Minnesota and make them part of his gang,” Knoop says. Alford claimed his group was a political subdivision of a Chicago gang; another cop remembers the name as the “Dealers of Death.”
David Miller, who prosecuted Jeramy Alford for the murder of Douglas Miller, says Alford had tried to falsely blame that homicide on fellow gang members nicknamed Zmiley and Roach. As a result, the police questioned these two men.

Luis Alford told police he hit Miller with a hammer and stabbed him with a barbecue fork, while his brother stabbed him with a knife, authorities said. His brother claimed full responsibility for the killing, after first blaming it on an unidentified third party, according to the county attorney's office.
"He said he hit Mr. Miller in the head with a pipe five or six times and stabbed him with anything he could find," the criminal complaint states.

Zmiley told police that the Dealers of Death had 300 members. “I was once a part of a little clique they had called the DOD,” the records quote Zmiley as saying. DOD stood for “Dealers of Death” and was based in Iowa, he said.
Zmiley said he was on antipsychotic medication, lived in a tent by the river, was a regular at Brothers bar in Minneapolis, and had engaged in violence in the past. He claimed Alford confessed to murdering a college student in an Indian costume. But Zmiley remembered the victim’s name as Andrew, not Chris Jenkins. However, according to David Miller, Alford once had a jail visit with a relative and spent his “precious 15 minutes” discussing a possible alibi for Halloween, the night Jenkins was killed.
“He [Alford] just said, ‘I killed this stupid looking dude and I threw him over the bridge,’ ” Zmiley told police.
Roach, who has a Minnesota criminal record, also told police he’d been a member of a gang he referred to as “DOD” and then called Dealers of Death. He said Jeramy Alford was the leader. (Zmiley told police someone else had taken over the gang after Alford was incarcerated.) Alford declined to be interviewed by Milwaukee Magazine. But when questioned by FBI agents, he claimed the DOD gang had murdered 40 young men.
Detective Gary Sykes of the New Brighton police department, who investigated the Miller homicide, is convinced the DOD gang robbed people for drug money, mostly in Minneapolis. “They hung out on the street all night and slept where they could during the day. Did Alford kill Chris Jenkins? It’s possible. Is he involved in other deaths? They are capable of almost anything, especially Jeramy. They have no compassion for human life. They were just plain weird.”
Head to the Internet, and it gets even weirder. Zmiley’s devil-worshipping Internet profile contains a flaming skull over a pentacle and reads, “I am me and there is no one like me, so back off before you get put down on the ground.” A friend writes on his site, “I also have a fascination with serial killers … the more u learn about history the better a person can learn from other peoples’ mistakes.”
Could Alford’s gang be the smiley face killers who murdered some of these young men? “I believe they were a part of it,” says Steve Jenkins, the father of Chris. “The FBI is not doing enough to confirm it.”
Local law enforcement authorities are more guarded. But like Sykes, they believe the DOD gang could be connected to the murder of young men. “It’s plausible,” says David Miller. Alford has already shown what he’s capable of. “He killed a defenseless man,” says Knoop, the Iowa cop. But Knoop adds that Alford is an untrustworthy character who “likes to brag.” He wants the FBI to take a closer look.

A camera captured a woman approaching Kyle Fleischmann not long before the bar closed. They danced briefly before she left with a man police later learned was her boyfriend and two of his male friends, said Paonessa, a former Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer.
In this case the father believes a van was involved.

Check this out.Of where the eye color is listed it is rarely brown.A lot of the victims have brown hair but not brown eyes.I have brown hair and hazel eyes and i don't believe that it is more common than brown eyes.You have the black guy that probably did not have blue hazel or green eyes .One older guy that does not fit the profile of the rest any way and 2 asians that dissappeared a few days apart.

Fergus County Sheriff Tom Killham says an outdoor recreationalist found Haight's body on Saturday in northeastern Fergus County, but authorities would not release the specific location where the body was found.

Not only was Luke Helder - the young man accused of planting pipe bombs in American mailboxes, injuring several people - disgruntled with the government, he was an art student. And not only was he an art student, he was drawing a smiley face in explosions across the American landscape.
As he told police, he'd done two circular eyes in the midwest and was working on the mouth in Texas when he ended up in a high-speed chase. He was described as jovial and friendly under questioning.

I know gay men from coast to coast and boarder to boarder in the US as well as many other round the world. I do not know of any group that would even contemplate such evil. Most gays I know just want to live their lives, have their rights as all citizens do, and be left alone to pursue their own version of happiness.
The other thing to note is that by and large - gay men are almost all anti-violence. You will seldom find gays who are even capable of violent behavior.
I wonder if these men were "closeted" gays or guys who were struggling with their own sexual identity? Could there be a calculated, cross-country plot to kill young college men, including some in Minnesota? It seems a little hard to believe, but two New York detectives say, they can prove it.

The Smiley face murders (alternately referred to as the Smiley face killings, the Smiley face murderer(s), the Smiley face gang, and other variations) refers to a theory originally advanced by two retired New York City detectives, Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte, that a number of young men found dead in bodies of water across several states over the last decade did not accidentally drown, as believed by most law enforcement sources, but were victims of a serial killer or killers.
Gannon and Duarte's theory
As recently as 2008, Gannon and Duarte were examining evidence going back to the late 1990s that they believe connects the deaths of 40 or more college-age white males, whose dead bodies were found in water in 11 states, often after leaving parties or bars where they were drinking. The men, according to the former detectives, have often fit a profile of being popular, athletic, and good students.
While the majority of these cases are believed by local authorities to be the result of accidental drownings, Gannon and Duarte have theorized that the young men were all murdered, either by an individual or by an organized group of killers. The term smiley face became connected to the alleged murders when it was made public that Gannon and Duarte had discovered graffiti depicting a smiley face near locations where they think the killer dumped the bodies in at least a dozen of the cases.
Rejection of the theory
Although Gannon and Duarte have been investigating cases going back as far as 1997, the perhaps most noted case in their theory is that of Chris Jenkins, a 21-year-old University of Minnesota student who left a bar in Minneapolis on Halloween night in 2002 and whose body was discovered in the Mississippi River in February of 2003 (the Mississippi runs through downtown Minneapolis). Jenkins' death was originally ruled an accident, but in November of 2006 the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) indicated that they had evidence suggesting the case was a homicide. However, the MPD has indicated that it does not support Gannon and Duarte’s theory linking Jenkins’ death to the drowning deaths of other college-age white males.
Other police forces that investigated the deaths Gannon and Duarte have argued should be linked together also dispute their conclusions. The La Crosse, Wisconsin, police force, which in charge of eight such investigations, released an official statement reiterating their original conclusions that the deaths were accidental drownings of inebriated men and stating that no smiley face symbols were found in connection with any of these cases.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has also issued a statement indicating that they do not agree with Gannon and Duarte’s belief that there is a serial killer at work.
Criminal profiler Pat Brown calls the serial killer theory "ludicrous," arguing that the evidence doesn't fit what is known about serial killers. Brown also believes that the smiley face images found in some of the cases are likely nothing more than coincidences based upon making a guess at where the body entered the water and searching a wide area until an example of smiley face graffiti can be found. "It's not an unusual symbol," she told Matt Smith of the Minneapolis-based newspaper City Pages. "If you look in an area five miles square, I bet you could find a smiley face."
