Hi! I haven't checked this thread in awhile - nice to see it's still active! I've been sad to notice recently that there have hardly been any stories in the news about Nick Garza recently - like his case is fading away. I hope they discover something new soon.
Middlebury College bought a building in January - the Old Stone Mill which sits on the Otter River. The plan at this point is to turn it into an arts center where students can do pottery, metal craft, maybe photography, etc..
May be curious or may be nothing, but the Old Stone Mill is a very old building - it would require quite a lot of heating/cooling/ventilation work to get it ready to accommodate stuff like kilns and chemical areas such as darkrooms which have special ventilation needs.
The building purchase was finalized and announced in mid-January. Nick disappeared Feb 5. Could someone from Trane have been called in to evaluate the mill's air systems? |

Second congressman asks FBI to investigate 'Smiley-Face' killers case
A second congressman has called on the FBI to take another look at the case of the so-called ‘Smiley-Face’ killers after a 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS investigation revealed new details about the case late last month.
"It has come to my attention that recent press reports indicate new evidence linking the drowning deaths of a large number of college-aged men across the country," Rep. Michael R. McNulty, D-NY, wrote in a letter to the FBI earlier this month.
"I am aware that the FBI investigated this matter previously, but it appears that some of these cases may be linked. In light of this new evidence, I respectfully request that the FBI re-open its investigation."
McNulty is the second member of congress to contact the FBI regarding the case. At the beginning of May, Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr., R-Wisconsin, made a similar request of the FBI after seeing our investigation on the national news.
The investigation at the end of April presented information from retired New York City detectives Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte regarding the mysterious river deaths of young men around the country.
The detectives believe the deaths of as many as forty young men around the country may be connected, including the death of Chris Jenkins in Minneapolis in 2002. Jenkins' death is the only case to be classified as homicide.
At many of the scenes, Gannon and Duarte discovered graffiti of what appeared to be a smiley face.

SLUC (southern illinois at carbondale) student died from drowning april 2008. Huaijun Meng was found dead in creek. Students called police around 8am to a creek near Wright Hall on the east side of sluc campus. Meng was last seen alive less than 24hrs earler by two neighbors. He was a graduate student in electrical engineering. |

Coming from a trades guy, me.
Usually for the heating, and air trades this is a slow time of the year. You can look at it as a cycle. When the first few cold days hit you will get service calls on heating units needing maintenance. Once the deep cold hits (January - February)that will knock out any heating unit faults due to loads. By March - April any faulty heating unit has been repaired, or replaced. The weather starts to warm requiring less of a load on the systems.
So, right now we are between the heating - cooling cycle. Anything heat related has been fixed, and the load requirements are in a decline due to the weather warming up. Once we start to get some 80 degree days that are capable of taxing a cooling system then the cycle will repeat, but for the cooling systems instead.
One thing to remember, heating, and cooling repairs are not done in advance. They are done AFTER the mechanism fails.
Just a thought. |

thanks.i was thinking maybe because they prefer to target college educated boys.i could see a killer maybe having dropped out of college and something being done to him by jocks.college also may not be his thing because the cities where the drownings occurred have classes for only a few days.this is a class in dubuque iowa.it is not for trane products

I live in LaCrosse.... and people have thought here for a very long time that there was more to this than just boys getting drunk and falling into the river. The really weird part is both my sister and I have seen blue spray painted smiley faces( we think they were blue) near the river in one or two of the parks , but we cannot remeber where exactly. Also, on an island in the river there is a sandbar...not too far away from the downtown area... where for years and years now people have been seeing rocks being moved into different pictures. I always thought it was a thing where someone gathered all the rocks and made a picture ... and then from then on all the people sporting by and stopping would change them into another picture. You can see them if you drive through Pettibone park ... and look across the river. I recall seeing a big smiley face there too, and wonder if it coincides with any of the drowning dates . I also have seen a devil face another time there.It's scarey living here , and remebering these things ...and hearing about this now . It just seems so likey that there really is something to this smiley face stuff.
There are three parks close to the bars downtown in this city. One reason people say the men are just drowning is because Riverside Park ... is just a couple of blocks from the 3d street bars these men were drinking at. Riverside park is right on the main channel of the Mississippi River ...Pettibone is exactly across the river from Riverside and the sandbar is just north of both and visible from both...Houska park , is another one taht is just to the south of both parks. Riverside is closest to the bars and theres a walkway that the steamboats dock upon that has no barrier along the river at all. Any drunk person could easily fall right into a deep and strong currented part of the river anywhere along that part of the park.
I can see on the other hand , and really do believe in my gut where it would be almost effortless for a person to lure another to that spot , because its kinda of a local hot spot( hundreds of people a day stop along the road in Riverside park and watch for eagles ,view the river, enjoy a walk or read a book because its a very beautiful place.).... All a person wuold have to do is watch for very drunk individuals , lure them away to the river and then push them in . If a person were drunk enough...it wouldn't be that hard to do at all. |

that was me posting more ino earlier.Due to the extreme slowness of the site i was not logged in.i am trying to put everything on youtube ,so all the data i gathered is in one place,but unfortunately that is a very slow process.i can only do a few minutes at a time with my camera,before it runs out of memory and my second video has not uploaded after several attempts.i am no longer on websleuths as it is a crime gossip forum,thanks to someone named blink 34 who attacks anyone with their own ideas or theories and also tells lies about them.apparently this person thinks the connection is not significant because those same areas of drowning deaths also have taco bells or walmarts.i suppose this person thinks that the killer or killers prefers tacos in lacrosse wisconsin as opposed to the ones in most of the other cities. |

Hey , hope ya don't mind if I jump in. I googled smiley face killer and found this thread. I live in the La Crosse area and just knew there was more to these boys drowning than people would let themselves believe. I actually did one of the boys mothers( or was it his aunt? hmmm* scratches head*) hair while I was in beauty school in 97 and I remember her just not believing it was an accident ...That was Anthony Skifton.... ONe of the first men to drown around here.
I hadn't even heard about this smiley face killer thing until my sister told me this morning . I know it was on a rock that lined the river, while I was fishing with my boyfriend and boys.Unfortunately we fish so frequesntly and in many places , that I don't know where it would be.
Riverside park is a very bustling and popular atraction in La Crosse.It is only 2 or 3 blocks from 3d street, which has actually been in the Guiness Book of World Records for having the most amount of taverns located on one street... Hundreds of people a day spend time at Riverside park and in this downtown area.College kids frequent the park and walk past the downtown to access the park. It is right on the Mississippi. Right across the river from Riverside park , is Pettibone park.Exactly south of both of these is Houska park. Excatly north from these is a little sand bar and island, on the Riverside park side of the river.
If a person drives through Pettibone park( which I have heard people talk about in this town as being known underground and nationally for some secret weird gay games or something ?) , and look across the river ... on the island they see a sandbar. I do not know why... but for some reason it is totally freaking me out to remember seeing pictures made by rocks lined up together on the sand bar. I always thought the pictures were just made by people stopping to rest or relax on the sandbar ... but I can't ever remember seeing those pictures when I was a gal and our dad would drive us through the park, and we used to go there alot.I would have noticed , because Im the type to gaze out the window. I the pictures must have started about 10 years ago or so, roughly( I might be wrong).
I know I have seen a smiley face, that was there for a long time.... and also have seen a devil face.Now I am wondering if I saw those at any of the same times any of these terrible deaths happened.
Another thing ...with the way Riverside is set up , because of the steamboats that come through .... it is all open. There is no barrier between the river and the walkway. They are at almost the same level even. I can totally see where it would be very simple for a person who was interesting enough to a drunk young man ( for whatever reason) to just lure a person to a walk at Riverside ... and then just push them in . If a person were drunk enough .... I can totally see how effortless that would actually be . The water is deep there and has a fast current. |

I'm from Minnesota too, I spent the first 40 years of my life in and around the Minneapolis area. LaCrosse is certainly in a beautiful part of the state.
I hope the FBI picks up this case, I saw they are under more pressure to do so, they should.
