it was very good more info than i ever heard before. one point was that items belonging to those found drowned seemed to have been purposely placed miles away from the body of water the men were found at
to send the search off target down a wrong road.
the case of Wade Steffey
He was not found in water but had been drinking and was found 4 months fater he went missing from his college in a college building
and as above a item belonging to him was recovered but this time instead of it being miles away from the body it was a few feet away from where it was eventually found
he went missing on jan 13 at 21 am
One of his mocasson shoes was recovered at the bottom of water filled steps that led to the door of colleges generator room only 9 days later.
this shoe was totally ignored by the investigators although it was handed to them.
it was four months later on april the 19th that his body was in the generator room found electrocuted behind that door that somehow was unlocked and had been unlocked or so it was presumed for four months, from the night of his disapearnce on the 13th jan to his eventual discovery on the 19th of april.
This is significant because the case had all the hallmarks of the smiley gang cases
he had been at a party with freinds but was not drunk
went off on his own back to the halls for his coat
he made phone calls to 2 people while he stood outside not able to enter the halls
yet they didnt let him in or couldnt??
an eye witness saw him stood outside the halls
HE WANTED TO GET HIS COAT FROM INSIDE THE HALLS
ONE OF HIS SHOES WAS FOUND IN WATER
HE WAS NOT DRUNK
WHY WOULD HE LEAVE ONE SHOE OUTISDE IN A DOOR WELL
COULD HIS SHOE HAVE BEEN PLACED THERE ON PURPOSE
OR DID IT FALL OFF AS HE WAS CARRIED INTO THE UTILITY ROOM ANTIME IN THE 4 MONTH PERIOD BETWEEN LAST SEEN AND FOUND?
the halls he was trying to enter were only a short walk from his own halls
A witness believed to have seen Steffey around 12:30 a.m. outside Owen Hall (1160 West Stadium Avenue) a short walk from his room in Cary Quad (1016 West Stadium Avenue).
Wade Steffey, a freshman on a full-ride academic scholarship at Purdue University majoring in Aviation technology, was last seen on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at a party at the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity house at 900 David Ross Road on the north side of campus. He left the party around midnight and was on his way to pick up his coat, which he had left in a friend's room at Owen Hall. Police are confident that Steffey was not intoxicated when he left the party. A witness believed to have seen Steffey around 12:30 a.m. outside Owen Hall (1160 West Stadium Avenue) a short walk from his room in Cary Quad (1016 West Stadium Avenue). At about the same time, he placed two cell phone calls to friends who lived in Owen.that was the last anyone saw of him
until he was found eloctrocuted four months later in the utility room where there weas elictrical equipment.

In a traffic nightmare, van-poolers keep smiling
Group shares love of laughs, disdain for congestion
Brian Feagans
The white van hasn't even left the cement and tinted-glass workscape of a Cobb County
office park. Yet the banter of the afternoon commute is in full gear.
The subject: Sandy Moore's legendary driving. Moore, the van pool's morning driver, has
been accused of being a "tooter" at the wheel.
"Sandy will say 'Did you see what he just did?' " says Monica Askew, who takes over
driving duties in the afternoons. Then she'll "toot, toot on that horn."
Everyone on board breaks into laughter.
Welcome to the "Don't Worry Be Happy" van pool, a shadow family built on a love of
good laughs and a disdain for driving solo through the nation's second-worst traffic.
Every morning, the 11 van-poolers hop aboard in Newnan and Union City, then complete
the 50-mile journey around the western edge of Atlanta to the Cumberland Galleria area.
The van's bright yellow license plate features a smiley face with hat turned sideways.
"Don't Worry Be Happy," it smirks, seeming almost cocky amid cars from Gwinnett,
Henry and other counties a monster commute away from the mid-rise office buildings at
I-75 and I-285.
Smiling faces populate the van's interior, too. The monthly cost — thanks to subsidies
and free maintenance — is just $50 each.
The riders are Atlanta old-timers and New York natives, computer analysts and insurance
adjusters, young and old, black and white, suburbanites and exurbanites. Each has taken a
solemn oath to show up on time each morning and afternoon, pump gas on occasion and,
perhaps most importantly, check any grumpiness at the van doors.
"You have to be able to get along and talk with people," Moore says. "It's like a
marriage."
These van-poolers celebrate their anniversary with a luncheon every October. And each
time there's a birthday, Askew's mother cooks a lemon pound cake. The riders send each
other get-well cards. And when Moore had to tend to her ailing husband, everyone
chipped in to cover her monthly fee and buy the family meals.
The van pool even had its first baby and grandbaby last year — both boys.
Page 2
Moore, who drives each morning, is the self-described "Mother Hen." The patriarch, by
default, is Sid Wade. On the road with 10 women, he's the lone "man-pooler." Even the
van's smiley face has long girly eyelashes.
Wade feels a little out of place when the conversation turns to breast-feeding. "But," he
says with a don't-count-me-out wag of the finger, "I was a computer analyst at Playtex."
Wade entertains as the van hits its first rough patch: a sea of brake lights where the
Perimeter meets I-20. He notes that not everyone who spots the smiley face plate in their
rear view mirror gets a cheery feeling inside. "We've had a few California waves," he
says.
Perhaps those drivers, stressed out and guzzling gas, are a bit jealous of commuters with
matching happy face umbrellas.
But for all the harmony, Wade, Moore and several others admit to a van pool divorce.
They don't like to talk about it. The split was messy.
That's the thing about cramming a dozen folks into a tight space and making them
dependent on one another. The relationship can be rocked by personality clashes, loud
cellphone yapping and louder snoring.
But the riders in van No. 24563 know rich rewards can await, too.
Wanda Reddick says she grudgingly left her Acura SUV behind, expecting the van pool
experiment to fail.
"I like getting out at lunch," says Reddick, an Allstate worker from Fayetteville. "All I
could think was 'I'm going to be stuck in that building all day.' "
Then her gas and car maintenance bills plummeted. Reddick was saving lunch money,
too. All this while spending time with fun folks who don't just accept back-seat driving
but consider it a sport. "I love it," she says. "I can't believe it, but I do."
Wade raises his eyebrows. Reddick's in it for the Chick-fil-A, he says. "If we go to
Chick-fil-A in the morning, she takes my biscuit."
Reddick feigns shock. "I do?"
Wade nods.
"Oh, yeah, I do."
The happy-go-lucky crowd drops Reddick and two others by their cars at Union Station,
Page 3
a mall in Union City. Then it's smooth sailing down I-85. City gives way to country,
cement barriers to picket fences.
The commute slows to a crawl on a two-lane road, approaching the Baptist church where
the van pool breaks up.
Carolyn Foster, a "Don't Worry Be Happy" original, will drive the van back to her house,
where she has the extra space to park it.
Askew, born and raised in LaGrange, will begin the second leg of her journey, 40 more
miles to the town she never wants to leave.
Wade, who jokes about fencing off his native Coweta County to keep out newcomers, has
a short drive home. So does Moore, who jumped out from Forest Park for a chance at
four acres.
The van pulls into the church lot, an hour after it left Cobb. The van-poolers scatter into
their own cars.
Then Moore, realizing she forgot something, flags down Wade.
Foster can't bring the van back to the church tomorrow, she says, so Wade will have to
pick it up.
Moore hands him a spare key, that piece of sparkling silver that will keep the van-poolers
together until retirement, a new work shift or some other commute-altering change does
them part. |

[link to www.yaledailynews.com]
Between the I-95 highway and the placid New Haven Harbor waters, 35 flags continually beat back and forth, defying their otherwise colorless urban surroundings.
The flags are Bill Shields’s and he has many more to offer — 600 types, at least. Known as the “Flag Man of Long Wharf Drive,” the merchant has advertised his colorful products within sight of the I-95, tethering them to his small, white van. The spot along Long Wharf Drive is perfect, he said, because the wind and the highway comprise his “publicity agent.”
“Madison Avenue couldn’t get me more attention,” he said, chuckling at the prospect.
Within the old food service van that now serves as his store, Shields sits with three and a half feet of elbow room, doing a sudoku puzzle. Brimming with folded flags, stickers and military pins, the vehicle evokes a sense of seclusion uncommon in 2007 — Shields has no office phone or Web site, and protects himself from cold weather by sitting next to a heater attached to a fuel tank.
Customers either find him through word of mouth or when they happen to catch sight of his multicultural clothesline of fabric flags, which sport anything from smiley faces to Budweiser logos to the American flag. Shields said he parks the van around 10:00 a.m. every day, opens shop at 11:00 a.m. and departs around 5:30 p.m., except on Mondays, which he takes off. More intuitively, he “goes by the sun,” refraining from work if the temperature is less than 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
“It’s a strange business, but I like it,” Shields said. “It’s a niche.”
Ask Shields for any flag, and he will not only have it in stock, but he can find it without reading the flag tags. Then he’ll explain the flag’s colors and symbols, or relate a story a customer once told him about the flag’s history.
Pulling out a gaudy dark green fabric with a light blue block of stars at its corner, Shields’ voice suddenly thawed, as if reliving a memory of a man he met yesterday. The flag, he explained, was designed by Revolutionary War fighter Ethan Allen.
“It’s quite ugly, isn’t it?” Shields said. “The guy was a maniac, an absolute, drunk maniac! He was basically an insurgent.”
For Shields, the aesthetic appeal of flags amounts to very little when compared to their complex histories. Researching flag records in his leisure time, he carries traditional flags as well as flags sporting collegiate and athletic logos. In addition to his collection of over 20 historical American flags — which often do not display the traditional red, white and blue — Shields markets dozens of flag replicas from in American history: George Washington’s personal flag, a long-defunct Russian-American fur company flag and the ever-popular black-and-white P.O.W. flag.
“People love to keep in touch with the past,” Shields said. “It’s just an aspect of human nature. You can see where you’re going if you know where you’ve been. I’m a firm believer in history repeating itself.”
Shields said the van receives 10 to 15 customers on a typical day, but more if the weather is tame. An hour before closing time, fourth-grade teacher Betsy McKenna walked over, looking for a teaching prop.
“This is going to sound really weird, but do you have the international flag of Spain?” she asked.
The merchant hardly batted an eye. “Sure I do. The traditional one? I have it in three by five, five by seventeen, twelve by eighteen.”
Flag customers often come searching for reminders of home, Shields said, or they want flags in the wake of global competitions or controversies.
“Competition can be the [FIFA] World Cup, or it can be when things heat up between one nation and another,” he said. “Whenever Israel gets in the news because of a conflict in the Middle East, I’ll get requests for flags, like I did last summer. I don’t carry Hamas flags, but I do have Palestinian flags.”
But to run the best flag business, it’s not enough to sell just one side’s flag or the emblems of all the warring nations, he said.
“You have controversy, and you profit from both sides,” he said. “[But] a good flag man always carries a flag with a peace sign on it, too.” |

Smiley Face Gang

by Hazel
.....Unknown to the detectives Minnesota College Professor Lee Gilbertson launched his own investigation two years ago . In his parellel investigation he discovered in the majority of cases a trail could be found leading from the last place the man was seen to the opposite direction of where the body would eventually be found. This ultimately led the local investigators away from the crime scene delaying recovery of the bodies. The professor’s conclusion; the killers were planting evidence in order to slow down the search and investigation efforts. Premeditated, well executed, and devious...... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 654074
So why wouldn't they want the bodies to be found soon after the disappearance? What difference could it make to them? They obviously want the credit of the killing but the trail of evidence leads away from where the body ends up.
I think it has to do with how the water would get rid of evidence or the proof of what actually killed these young men. Maybe whatever they use to kill them will leave the body after a certain amount of time in the water. |

Smiley Face Killers
On April 10, 2009, Conversations with Cops at the Watering Hole will feature and interview with Kristi Piehl and Bill Szostak. MSNBC asked, “Could a national gang of killers that leaves smiley-face calling cards be getting away with murdering dozens of male college students by making all the deaths look like accidents?” In the past 12 years, more than 70 young men have either drowned or gone missing under similar circumstances. These are men with vibrant personalities and bright futures. Despite what you’ve heard, not all the men were intoxicated when they were last seen. Emmy Award-winning investigative reporter Kristi Piehl first exposed the possible connection between the mysterious drowning deaths in 2008 on Good Morning America. Piehl is now working closely with several families of the victims including, Bill Szostak, the father of Josh Szostak. |

I can not get away from my job, besides a van is probably only one method of abduction and there is probably more than one and every one probably does not have a van.You might want to look out for a grey four door with HKF in the license plate |

.....Unknown to the detectives Minnesota College Professor Lee Gilbertson launched his own investigation two years ago .
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 421218
in some cases i think the bodies were found a few days later and in those cases the crime went down flawless and the bodies were in the water enough time to destroy evidence.its when something goes wrong ,like the victim making a phone call or struggling to much that they gotta take the body somewhere and wait to dump it.i dont no much about how much time it takes for evidence to be destroyed in water.like for instance what if the victim scratches the killers and get the killers skin under there nails?how much time in water would it take to destroy that dna.
the dumping the body in water is to destroy evidence, thats a fact. |

see i never read nothing about his belongings being found there.this is why there needs to be a file for each victim with ALL the facts and info. |

I agree.i spent a lot of time establishing what the patterns are but I also put a lot of effort into working on who may be doing this. You would think that all those people at webslueth would have put more together by now.I by myself had made more progress.Josh snells belongings were found in Owen Park.l |

Yes, but that could be why they try to leave evidence going in the opposite direction from point of "last seen" & where the body will be found as Gilbertson pointed out.
The type of evidence they don't want found on the bodies must take a certain amount of time to be erased (maybe such as sexual torture, etc.) |
