when will the Leaning tower of Pisa come tumbling down?
So, the leaning tower of Pisa construction was started in 1173, and continued haltingly for 200 years. Seems it began it slow tendency towards toppling shortly after construction started. This was due to it being built on soil that wasn't uniform, half the tower has a hard clay and the other a soft clay beneath it. It's possible today to totally correct the angle of inclination with an injection leveling method or building repair used all over the world. But, if the don't do something to correct the problem even in a minor way every few years, it's likely to topple over.

Even if the problem was mitigated with foundation piers (penetrating bedrock), you still have the inevitable threat of earth quakes. Nothing lasts forever.

I would look for at time when mankind is no longer here to maintain it.

Maybe 300 yyears from now.

I do agree that nothing lasts forever, but there are alternate ways of dealing with it. The injection method normally works best for this situation. it pumps a thin concrete into the soil beneath, fills voids, and tends to right foundations that have differential settlement like the Piza tower.

Plus, I believe that the locals like it leaning, attracts tourists. They apparently don't want it righted.

Re: when will the Leaning tower of Pisa come tumbling down?
Yep... that's what the locals want. I assume they could "fix" the foundation just enough so it would be more than every few years that it needs correction and adjustments...

It is one of those things that we all grew up seeing at least pictures of and consider it to be important it stays the way it is. I'm not sure I'd think the same of it if they were to decide one day in the near future to actually fix it.

Leonardo de Pisa, also known as Leonardo Fibonnaci (Fibonnaci spiraling numbers) was the architect of the Leaning tower.

His tower is beautiful and has a spiraled staircase up the center of it.

Guess he should've hired a better foundational construction crew.

The froze the soil underneath - literally.

Frozen clay cannot move. The Tower is safe. :)

I'm sorry, I researched him some years back and remembered wrong.

He was born in Pisa, not the architect of the tower.

I was wrong, the freezing method didn't work. lol

The method that IS working currently is to remove soil under the "high" side, which is making it settle back towards vertical instead of going the wrong way.

Yeah, I just read that - they noticed the lean even while constructing the Tower, so the top levels were constructed off center, skewed, to try to correct the problem. So you're right, you stand it up and it'll look cockeyed. LOL The Italians don't want to stand it up tho, they just want the leaning halted, and it appears the geotech engineers have done that.

Re: when will the Leaning tower of Pisa come tumbling down?
Isn't it amazing what man will do to try to get his world to conform to things that are adverse? Like building the tower a little cock-eyed so it would seem to stand straighter due to the foundation having problems.

Excellent articles! Thanks!

Soil removal is only one way, but it has it's dangers. Still, amazing what man can do to try to get his environment to conform to his needs...
