Chaitén Volcano Eruption, Chile - John Seach
An overflight of Chaitén volcano this morning showed a dense column of white to grey emissions reaching a height of 20 km, and drifting SSE with the prevailing winds. The geoloogical record of Chaitén volcano shows a history of pyroclastic flows and ashfall. This explosive character of the volcano suggests that ashfall may reach a considerable distance from the volcano. Pyroclastic flows are possible, and are associated with dome collapse. The volcano is not covered with ice and there is no immediate danger from lahars.

Chaitén volcano in southern Chile erupted yesterday for the first time in over 9000 years. The volcano is located 10 km NE of the town of Chaitén on the Gulf of Corcovado. The government evacuated as many as 1,500 people from nearby villages and the town of Chaiten when the volcano erupted ash, and more than 60 earthquakes were recorded. Officials distributed fresh water and more than 10,000 protective masks. Winds also carried ash over the Andes to Argentina, where school was suspended in the popular Patagonian tourist towns of Esquel and Trevelin. Authorities there also declared a state of alert on major highways as falling ash reduced visibility, and hospitals reported an patients complaining of eye irritation. Trucks with drinking water were being sent to the area after ash affected water supplies, local authorities said. School classes were suspended in some areas.

Ruapehu Volcano, New Zealand -
Ruapehu Volcano in New Zealand is showing signs of increasing activity. The Department of Conservation issued a warning to climbers of an increased chance of eruption from the crater lake. Risks to people entering the Summit Hazard Zone within 2km of Crater Lake are assessed to be higher than normal, due to an increase in gas emission. The alert level remains at Level One.

Bobrof Volcano, Alaska -
A large earthquake (magnitude 6.6) occurred 8 km west of Bobrof Volcano in Alaska on Thursday 1st May 2008 at 04:33 PM local time. The earthquake focus was 10 km depth. There have been no recent eruptions at Bobrof Volcano.

Ash from Chaitén volcano in Chile has reached Buenos Aires in Argentina. Three airlines - Aerolinas Argentinas, Austral and Chile's LAN have canceled flights across the region. Eruptions continue at the volcano for the sixth day, with plumes reaching 33,000 ft altitude. An emergency zone of 50 km radius has been placed around the volcano.

Chaitén Volcano, Chile
Five shallow focus earthquakes (10 km depth), larger than magnitude 4, accompanied the eruption of Chaitén volcano in Chile. The earthquakes occurred in a region of low historical seismicity, therefore were probably related to the eruption of the volcano.

Tuesday May 6, 2008
On 6th of May the eruption at Chaitén volcano in Chile intensified with the eruption column reaching an altitude of 30 km (100,000 ft). This makes the eruption possibly the largest since Pinatubo in 1991. The nearby town of Chaitén could end up buried, like the Roman city of Pompeii following Mount Vesuvius' eruption in 79 A.D. Volcanic ash is already 5 feet deep in some places. Volcanic material from Chaiten's last eruption measured up to 2 m (6 feet) in places. During a helicopter overflight on 6th May at 10:00 hr, observations showed two explosion craters on the northern side of the dome had merged to form a single crater with a diameter of 800 m. Lava is rising in the crater but has not yet spilled over. There have been no reports of pyroclastic flows. So far, Chaiten has emitted only a few thousand tons of sulphur dioxide. In 1991 Mt Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines emitted 20 million tons of sulphur dioxide in 1991, and caused a brief period of global cooling.

Renewed vigorous eruptions occurred at Chaitén volcano in Chile on Tuesday. A government volcanologist warned that the eruption was only at the beginning stage and that a larger explosive eruption was possible. On Tuesday the volcano was exploding very strongly. Nearly 400 people from the surrounding area, including emergency workers and journalists, were put aboard two navy ships and other vessels and taken to safety. The eruption has affected an area with 30 km radius.People who refused to leave their homes were evacuated by force. Only a contingency force of about 50 police and navy personnel were left in the town. Buildings and streets in Chaitén town have been covered with a thick blanket of ash up to 30 cm deep. In Futaleufu, a town 70 kilometers south of Chaiten, its 1,800 inhabitants were either being evacuated or fleeing over the border to Argentina. Ash from Chaitén volcano is also reaching Argentina.

Eruptions continue for a fourth day at Chaitén volcano in Chile. Evacuations have occurred at a second town, Futaleufu. Some residents have evacuated across the border to Argentina. Around 25,000 head of cattle in the area are in serious danger of dying. President Michelle Bachelet briefly visited Chaiten and spoke with some of the few remaining residents. At shelters in Puerto Montt, evacuees sought the president's support to rebuild outside the path of the volcano. Most of Chaiten's 4500 residents fled as the eruption polluted air and water supplies.

Sunday may 4, 2008
More than 4000 people have been evacuated from Chaitén town and surrounding areas after Chaitén volcano erupted on Friday. Many people have evacuated by boat to the town of Castro on the island of Chiloe. Southern Chile is fragmented into hundreds of small islands and fjords. Some people are now staying in guesthouses, while schools have been turned into makeshift shelters. The volcano has continued to emit ash for a second day. Ash has also fallen across the border in Chubut province, Argentina.

Mt Etna Volcano Italy -
Eruptions started yesterday at Mt Etna volcano in Italy. Lava fountains were visible at SE crater and projectiles sent in the direction of the Valle del Bove.

Rabaul Volcano, Papua New Guinea -
Ashfall from Rabaul Volcano in Papua New Guinea has closed Tokua airport, forcing the cancellation of six flights. East New Britain’s Civil Aviation Authority said ash had been falling on the runway since Wednesday night. The runway would be fully cleared if winds change direction or if there was heavy rainfall. Rabaul's crater has been continuously deflating, going down by eight metres since the 1970s. No new material is being formed. The current eruption is old magma from beneath the caldera.

Chaitén Volcano, Chile -
Eruptions continue at Chaitén volcano in Chile. Small pyroclastic flows have been observed at the volcano descending eastwards into Raya river. Yesterday, the eruption column reached an altitude of 14 km at 2pm, which drifted northeast. A new crater has opened up at the western base of the dome. Seismic monitoring equipment has been moved from the town of Chaitén to a safer location on Talcán island. The number of volcano-tectonic earthquakes remains constant at 35 events per day, concentrated on the outer regions of the volcano. Two large explosions occurred on 6th and 7th May (23:35 hr). A shallow reservoir of magma at 5 km depth has been ascending towards the surface. Breaking of rock in the conduit due to magma ascent has been responsible for the large explosions. An ongoing hazard at the volcano is the collapse of eruption columns, or dome collapse, creating pyroclastic flows which descend radially from the volcano into adjacent valleys. Helicopter overflights will continue to visually monitor the volcano as well as retrieve seismic data. The alert level remains at the highest rating, RED.

Hello Geogal ...you are a very smart and attractive woman : )
Man's symbiotic connection with the cosmos will be known and there is nothing which can stop that knowing. Because everything we all do everyday helps confirm that truth. It is just that we haven't reached the pinnacle of where it leads. But we will soon enough. We will either live or die with that knowledge. Between Heaven and Earth is us.

Be brave young warriors in truth.

Good stuff. Thanks.

So what is your take on what is going on? Earthquakes were Very Active yesterday. Volcano activity is, well, ACTIVE...

Do you think there will be a large plate shift soon? You are a scientist, do you ever have/allow intuition to play a part in your thinking?

Welcome.

Hrmm... intuition does play a small part, but scientists base things in facts, observations, tests, results, reactions... You can't go to a board or a meeting and tell them your intuition says. You need facts to back that intuition. Most of the geo community doesn't believe it's possible to predict exact events, even slightly. Some believe it can be predicted occasionally to rarely. Predictions are a part of intuition. Intuition can be used to create a hypothesis, though. Then you need to find the facts to back you, or be thought a fool.

That said... a large plate shift... like how do you mean? Sudden movement resulting in a large earthquake? The plates are constantly moving... GPS has confirmed that over the last number of years that it's been used.

My take goes along with a very big subject that takes tie to explain in full... but, the basics are plate tectonics. Bear with me if you already know this, I will come to a point. Beneath the crust lies the mantel. There's an upper and lower mantel. The upper mantel is thought to be the giant conveyor belt and moves through convection, like a giant pot being stirred, we see the reaction of this in the oceanic plates moving outward from the center towards the subduction zones. Like soup in a pot, there are hotter more liquid zones and chunkier zones and the like.

The planet is also known to have cycles, some are more active and some are calmer. We appear to be leaving a calmer phase. It's also possible that the long awaited magnetic polar reversal is coming on soon, geologically speaking, or within the next few thousand years or so. So, do I think things are going to "heat up" a little more... possible. But, I also think that people tend to microscope view some activity and apply that as a marco. KWIM? I think there will be activity we will see at different places in the world, but I also think we've seen MUCH more active times than current, even since the time of man began... which is a drop in the bucket of earth time. Does that answer?

well, yes, a common sense answer, which we all hope is the case. Geogal's a clever girl. fact of the matter is, there has been intense seismic activity on the ring of fire, especially since the mega quake on Boxing day 2004, and now we have a caldera waking from a 9000 year slumber and pumping huge quantities of crap into the atmosphere.

What we're all concerned about, quite simply, is a sudden catastrophic event that will plunge us all back to the stone age. None of us know what it could be, maybe a vei 8 eruption, or a small tectonic plate slipping under a much bigger one, who knows?

When you have conditions like we have today, uncontrolled fuel and food price rises, food shortages, markets in turmoil, and best of all, the richest people in the World setting up a seed bank in Scandanavia, people are BOUND to get jittery about things!

Re: Volcano update December 8, see pg 33
OK... If you want to go farther back, just a tad, even in human memory there was a much more active time. Let's look a little at recent history. Chile 1960 had a Mw9.5, largest earthquake ever recorded, likely it could be one of the largest there ever was due to recorded devastation at the time and different times in history. Kuril Islands in 1963 had an Mw8.5. Prince WIlliam Sound Alaska 1964 MW 9.2, Rat Island, Alaska 1965 Mw8.7. A 5 year period that saw 4 of the 10 highest ever recorded earthquakes in history.

Dec 26, 2004, Sumatra was a very large one and did increase the amount of earthquakes for that year world wide quite a bit, agreed. But, since there's only been an Mw8.6 also in Sumatra, and that was in March the following year. Yes, it was likely due to some of the stresses built up from the 2004 event. The area is about the largest plate area where subduction occurs. It's also the MOST volcanically active. Yes, when things go bad there they can REALLY go bad. It's part of the reason it's being watched so closely. Did you realize that the tsunami that followed the 2004 event was only slightly due to the intensity of the earthquake? Most of the energy that followed was due in fact to a sub-oceanic landslide triggered by the earthquake. In part proved by the event 3 months later that caused a tsunami, but it only affected the local area. It didn't wash a swath of destruction in it's path, covering a very large ocean. We find similar tsunami events for Chile 1960 and for Off shore Oregon 1700 (Mw estimated 8.7-9.0), also very likely due to sub-oceanic landslides.

As far as dormant volcanoes becoming active, there's plenty of events in history that I could point to that were similar. But, suffice it to say that sometimes dormant volcanoes that aren't on the "active" watch list are still under observation, just NOT as closely. That may change in the future. But, so far, it's only kick a few tens of thousand cubic meters of ash and SO2 into the air, frankly not very much on a global scale, but yes, devastating for the local area. The quantities are not as "huge" as you believe so far. Hasn't even hit the level of stuff pumped out by Mt St Helens in 1980, yet, and the world survived THAT pretty darn fine, I think. Believe it or not, the local government appears to be handling it pretty well and keeping the human loss as low as possible until this thing has finished whatever it's going to do.

Yes, everyone is concerned about an event like that. I live in California. I have a bug-out bag, grow some of my own food, have a lot of food and first aid supplied and water in storage, and have a water filter... I do what I can do to prepare for poop hitting the fan. Then, I make the choice to not worry about it constantly and enjoy my life. I WILL die, someday. That's inevitable. But, I also make the choice to love and enjoy life and not worry or freak about things that I can't control, like weather, earthquakes, tornados, volcanoes, etc... If I get caught up in a world wide devastating event, then I'll end up being a statistic. Sometimes things like that happen. But, it's the choices we make between hither and yon that matter.

As far as a small tectonic plate slipping under a much larger one... Juan de Fuca is one example... there are a number more in the world. But, JdF started out as a very large plate called the Farallon slipping under the North American continent. It's likely why there are active faults in Tn/Mo/Il/In, or so a theory goes. What will be will be. Is there anything that any human CAN do to stop the world from being active? Not that I've heard or researched.

What we're all concerned about, quite simply, is a sudden catastrophic event that will plunge us all back to the stone age. None of us know what it could be, maybe a vei 8 eruption, or a small tectonic plate slipping under a much bigger one, who knows?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 431289

Don't know what this part has to do with a thread about world wide volcanism, but... LOL! I don't know about any seed bank in Scandanavia, but if you have a link I'd be interested in reading it. As far as the rest, there's little I can do about prices going out of control or food shortages other than what I already am. I make my protests with my pocket book and writing delegates when it's applicable. I have my own ideas on more we can do, as a people, but that's for a different thread. Care to start one? I'd love to join it with thoughts on what WE can do. Trading ideas on WHAT to do isn't soothing words... it's planning. Start a thread and I WILL plan with you and others. Are you game for it? If you are, then draw my attention to it with a key word of "volcano" and/or "earthquake"... I'll find it then.

When you have conditions like we have today, uncontrolled fuel and food price rises, food shortages, markets in turmoil, and best of all, the richest people in the World setting up a seed bank in Scandanavia, people are BOUND to get jittery about things!

I agree on your eureka equation! I LOVE EUREKA MOMENTS!

I love to use food as a metaphor for geology. Not everyone can picture stuff in their heads, but almost everyone knows food. Dagwood sandwich is a great metaphor for sedimentary actions! I think new ideas are often formed this way:

interest+education+training+intuition+damn hard work = eureka!

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. (Damn yer good!) Soup as tectonic plates...going to make me look at my lunch a lot differently!

Karymsky Volcano, Russia -
An eruption has occurred at Karymsky volcano, Kamchatka, Russia. A surge in seismic activity was recorded at the volcano. Ash emissions reached 4.5 km altitude. There is no danger to nearby settlements.

Re: Volcano update December 8, see pg 33
The Chilean Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería (SERNAGEOMIN) has issued a new bulletin today, 13 May 2008, regarding the ongoing eruption at Chaitén volcano.

Yesterday, 12 May, SERNAGEOMIN carried out overflights and assessed the height of the eruption column as 8 kilometres above sea level. During the overflight ‘at least four explosions were observed that generated columns of a similar height, which were carried to the north-east by the prevailing strong (80-100 km/hr) south-west winds’. The overflight also revealed several acres of burned forest on the northern flank of the caldera ‘due to minor pyroclastic flows generated by the collapse of the base of the eruptive column and/or lateral explosions around the crater’, while areas to the north-east ‘have also been severely affected by small pyroclastic flows and the forests entirely levelled and burned’. The overflight also provided more information on the condition of the Chaitén lava dome:

The central dome presented a thick vertical column of gas and ashes from a crater of about 1 km diameter, located on the northern flank of the dome and extending towards the top. Western and north-western areas show the traces of many minor pyroclastic flows on their flanks, which have burned all vegetation inside the caldera, and even beyond its northern edges.

The overflight investigated the flooding of the Río Chaitén (also known as the Río Blanco) in Chaitén town yesterday and confirmed that the cause was ‘the large volumes of ash and pumice’ being carried by the river … the channel has been filled in by volcanic sediment’:

This process resulted from the accumulation of large amounts of ash and pumice in the headwaters of the Río Chaitén, which rises in the caldera of the volcano of the same name. The deposition of this material into the river will have caused the mud flow (lahar), a process that will recur, especially if there are heavy rains during the next few days.

The bulletin reports an increase in the number of VT seismic events around the volcano over the last 36 hours, and swarms of minor earthquakes have been recorded at intervals not exceeding 5 minutes.

The continuing concern for SERNAGEOMIN is ’possible future explosions causing the total destruction of the dome and the generation of large pyroclastic flows by the collapse of the eruption column, which would descend radially from the volcano through the adjacent valleys’. This highly destructive outcome is the worst-case scenario about which SERNAGEOMIN volcanologists and others have been warning for the last ten days: it remains a very real possibility.

Gamalama Volcano, Indonesia -
Gamalama volcano in Indonesia has been upgraded to level 2 alert (out of maximum 4). An increase in gas emissions from the active crater, and volcanic tremor, indicates magma is rising towards the surface. On 11th May emissions reached a height of 500 m above the summit. A 2 km exclusion zone has been placed around the crater.

Chaitén Volcano, Chile -
On Monday 12th May, emissions from Chaitén volcano in Chile reached an altitude of 8 km. Pyroclastic flows have burned several hectares of forest. A vertical dome is located in a 1 km wide crater. The Chaitén River has overflowed due to silting up from ash and pumice, and lahars extended 200 m either side of the river. About 40 buildings, and many vehicles, were buried by the lahars. Lahars remain an ongoing hazard at the volcano. Earthquakes greater than magnitude 3, and earthquake swarms lasting 5 minutes have been recorded at the volcano.

Mumbai, May 14 (IANS) The oozing of a lava-like substance from the earth created panic among villagers in Murti and surrounding areas of Baramati in Maharashtra Tuesday and the police cordoned the area off and sent then liquid's samples for analysis.

A hot jet of the molten substance was thrown out of the earth's bowels Sunday night. Though the substance has stopped oozing out since early Tuesday morning, it has turned into a semi-solid brackish rock like formation spread over more than 30 square feet.

Confirming the incident, assistant police inspector Vivek Lawand of the Vadgaon-Nimbalkar police station told IANS by telephone that the entire area has been cordoned off and people were advised to remain at a safe distance.

He said the district collector and other civil and police officials were at the site, around 450 km from here.

The police also sent a message to the state geological department to investigate the substance.

"We have sent samples of the material to the geological department and we will decide what to do after we get results of the tests," Lawand said.

He said the material was coming out near an electric pole. "Since nothing has happened to the pole, it might not be lava, but we will wait for analysis results," he said.

This is an excellent site for those interested in satellite imagery of Chaiten and the south america region. It is in spanish only and out of Peru and not for those with a slow connection. I have a pretty darn fast connection speed, and it was taking about 2+minutes to download completely.

geogal,

thank you for your dedication to updating the volcanic events that have been happening lately. it's nice to read a report then get a personal perspective on it afterwards. and you aren't doing it in an alarming way, it's very intelligently laid out.

Doesn't sound volcanic to me. Sounds like industrial waste. The pole would have been cinders, possibly before anyone saw the molten substance. But, none the less it is a nasty problem. Thanks for the article. I do wonder if they will be able to clean this up... Mambai is known for being an industrial and human volcano ready to go for nearly 20 years...

" Industrial houses dumped hundreds of thousands of tons of hazardous wastes on fallow or public lands without any proper safeguards, thus making their way into the air or water bodies."

Thanks for some good posts G, but there's something strange about this report - the dome should be in the crater, not the reverse. Maybe a translation issue, maybe they're referring to the mountain as a whole?

Also, Mt. Etna was erupting last night in spectacular fashion, and you can watch it live here

Thanks! I personally don't see too much to be overly alarmed about with the world, right now. Terrible things happen. Volcanoes go off, yes sometimes a bit unexpectedly without a whole lot of warning or with warnings being ignored. Earthquakes happen just as unexpectedly. I'm in just as vulnerable positition as many others. I can and do run the numbers of what's happened so far this year and in previous years, so I KNOW we (world wide) are in for likely at least 6 more Mw7ish earthquakes and likely 1 or 2 Mw8+ for the rest of this year... that's looking at averages per year and only getting us up to the averages that have been happening over the last 10 years. If you go back further, the averages can and do go higher. This is a part of the cycle of the world and life... we cry for our losses and fight to continue with life.

So, will disasters happen and will there be a loss of life and property? Yes. will life go on in this world? Yes. Will we as a people clean up after and continue on? Yes. Will we learn more and hopefully reduce the human losses during such events? Yes, we already have. Chaiten and China are both proof of that. Chaiten, as far as I've heard, has had so loss of life. China, the numbers of lives lost seems to be staying down. I've heard multiple numbers and potential numbers, but in the past similar size events have been really terrible... 1556 saw 830,000 dead from a similar size event. I read about 900 students being stranded under a collapsed building and amazingly only 50 died (last I'd heard). It could have been all 900.

I think it's possibly they are referring to the current crater on the dome. maybe typo or confusion of terms for whom ever wrote it? It was (a few days ago) multiple craters that collapsed into one. I've not heard or read about multiple domes, so "central" may be an attempt to refer to it's location... and the northern flank is on the volcanic dome itself on the mountain.

Thanks for the Etna info!
