Geogal, concerning the use of ionospheric control to create earthquakes HAARP style. In the months leading up to the Ache earthquake (boxing day!) - the former Australian Foreign Minister was on the TV news warning Australian tourists to avoid Ache because there was secret intelligence that a terrorist strike was imminent. He was on the tele twice a week with warnings. He obviously knew something big was going to happen.

And why would he have only been warning tourists? Plus, this is pretty off topic for a volcano thread. I have two earthquake threads this discussion would be more appropriate for.

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
Wednesday, August 20, 2008 07:44 HST (Wednesday, August 20, 2008 17:44 UTC)
[link to volcano.wr.usgs.gov]

KILAUEA VOLCANO (CAVW#1302-01-)
19.42°N 155.29°W, Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

This report on the status of Kilauea volcanic activity, in addition to maps, photos, and webcam images (available using the menu bar above), was prepared by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park status can be found at [link to www.nps.gov]

Activity Summary for last 24 hours: Kilauea summit continued to produce small amounts of ash and elevated amounts of sulfur dioxide gas from the Halema`uma`u vent. At the east rift eruption site, Pu`u `O`o cone continued to produce high amounts of sulfur dioxide gas; the TEB eruption was stable with lava flowing through tubes to the ocean.

Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: At 2:48, 2: 57, and 4:08 pm yesterday, a hybrid/explosion earthquakes were followed by a few minutes of brown-colored plume noted by the NPS eruption crew. Overnight, incandescence continued to be weak and was barely recorded on the webcam. At about 7:20 pm, the NPS eruption crew reported rock fall sounds followed by a brief winking of the weakly incandescent vent.

This morning, a white plume is rising from the Halema`uma`u vent and being blown southwestward over the Ka`u Desert. Sulfur dioxide emission rates remained elevated and variable; the most recent average measurement was 700 tonnes/day on August 18 compared to a pre-2008 background rate between 150-200 tonnes/day. GOES-WEST imagery shows the plume going directly southwest inland of the coast between 6-7 am.

Ash production continued; this morning's collections continued to be primarily fine rock dust.

The summit tiltmeter network recorded minor oscillations with weak deflation. The network of GPS receivers that span the summit recorded no significant change in distance across the caldera.

Seismic tremor remained at moderate levels. The number of RB2S2BL earthquakes beneath Halema`uma`u Crater decreased but remained above background values of 40/d. Twelve earthquakes were located beneath Kilauea: seven were beneath the southern summit caldera, two beneath an area immediately west the southwest rift zone, and three on south flank faults.

Last 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents and flow field: Magma continued to degas through Pu`u `O`o Crater resulting in an emission of 3,100 tonnes/day of sulfur dioxide on August 16, down from a high of 7,100 tonnes/day on July 18 and near background values of about 2,000 tonnes/day. No incandescence was observed within the crater last night.

The tiltmeter on the north side of Pu`u `O`o cone recorded minor oscillations with very weak deflation. GPS receivers recorded no significant change in distance across the crater. Seismic tremor levels were at background levels near Pu`u `O`o and near background levels with intermittent tremor bursts at the TEB vent.

Lava from the TEB vent and the rootless shield field flows through tubes to the ocean. Overnight, no incandescence was visible from the rift zone to the top of the pali above the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision. HVO geologists yesterday found only a single active ocean entry and no surface flow activity. Occasionally, they observed lava bubbles bursting from a location east of the Waikupanaha entry throwing molten bits 10-20 m (33-65 ft) in the air.

Chaitén update, 20 August 2008
Posted by volcanismblog
SERNAGEOMIN have issued their Bulletin No. 49 on the Chaitén eruption, dated 19 August, which can be found (as a PDF) [link to inglaner.com]
at Werner Luis’s Chaitén site. The document runs to three pages and includes a number of illustrative figures. The overall picture is one of a steady-state low-level eruption with variable but basically low seismicity. The changes in seismic behaviour at Chaitén over recent days do not appear to correlate with any changes in the volcano’s eruptive behaviour: increases in seismicity did not relate to increases in eruptive activity, and recent decreases have not corresponded to declines in activity. SERNAGEOMIN are keeping a close watch on developments are are maintaining Volcanic Red Alert, as before.

A small seismic crisis beneath the summit of Piton de la Fournaise lasted a little more than two and a half hours on 15 August. Deformation was also detected at the top of Dolomieu and, coupled with the increase in seismicity, prompted OVPDLF to raise the Alert level to 1. Public access to the summit was prohibited. On 18 August, the Alert Level was lowered because seismicity had decreased and deformation was no longer detected.

Soufrière Hills (United Kingdom) - Report for 13 August-19 August 2008 - NEW
Yesterday, 9:08 PM
MVO reported that new lava extrusion from Soufrière Hills started from the W side of the lava dome sometime between the 28 July lava-dome collapse event and 8 August, when a new channel of fresh rockfall material was seen below Gages Wall. Cloud cover often prevented visual observations. During 8-15 August, seismicity and the rate of lava extrusion were generally low and sulfur dioxide emissions were elevated. On 14 August the W side of the dome was visible and the explosion crater that was generated on 28 July was almost completely filled with new lava. Lava spilled over the lower and W side of the crater and generated rockfalls below Gages Wall that were observed and heard from St. George's Hill. During 14-15 August, the scent of volcanic gases was noticeable at times in inhabited areas of Montserrat. The Hazard Level was 3.

Batu Tara (Indonesia) - Report for 13 August-19 August 2008

Chaitén (Chile) - Report for 13 August-19 August 2008
Yesterday, 9:08 PM
SERNAGEOMIN reported that continuous emissions of gas-and-ash plumes from Chaitén were observed on 13 August, after three days of bad weather prevented visual observations. Plumes rose to an altitude of 2 km (6,600 ft) a.s.l., but later that day rose to greater altitudes of 6-7 km (19,700-23,000 ft) a.s.l. The increased activity did not correspond to any significant variation in seismicity. Plumes were emitted from two areas on the E and S flanks and were different colors; the area on the E flank produced steam plumes with minor ash content and the area on the S flank emitted darker ash plumes. The plumes drifted SW and caused ashfall in Chaitén town for several hours. The ash accumulation was 1.5 cm thick. Based on web camera views, SIGMET reports, analysis of satellite imagery, and information from the Puerto Montt Flight Information Region (FIR), the Buenos Aires VAAC reported that during 16 and 18-19 August ash plumes rose to altitudes of 1.4-2.4 km (4,500-8,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted NE, E, and SE.

Chikurachki (Russia) - Report for 13 August-19 August 2008
Yesterday, 9:08 PM
KVERT reported that clouds prevented satellite image views of Chikurachki during 8-15 August. The level of seismicity was unknown because Chikurachki lacks dedicated seismic instruments. The Level of Concern Color Code remained at Orange.

Cleveland (United States) - Report for 13 August-19 August 2008

Incandescence was noted from the rootless shield complex during 13-15 August. Earthquakes were in various locations along the Koa'e fault system, S and W of the caldera, beneath the summit, along the S-flank faults, and along the E and SW rift zones. Beneath Halema'uma'u crater, around 40 small earthquakes per day (background is 20-40) also occurred but were too small to be located more precisely. The vent in Halema'uma'u crater continued to produce a predominantly white plume with minor ash content that drifted mainly SW. The plume was occasionally tinged brown. Night-time incandescence was intermintently seen at the base of the plume, and rock impacts and rushing sounds were heard in the vicinity of the crater.

Krakatau (Indonesia) - Report for 13 August-19 August 2008
Yesterday, 9:08 PM
According to a news article, explosions and earthquakes from Anak Krakatau averaged 120 per day approximately during 11-17 August. Monitoring personnel observed active lava flows, ejecting rocks, and emissions of "smoke."

Llaima (Chile) - Report for 13 August-19 August 2008
Yesterday, 9:08 PM
During 8-11 August, SERNAGEOMIN reported that fumarolic activity from the snow-free pyroclastic cones in Llaima's main crater was visible during periods of clear weather; resultant plumes drifted E. A 2-km long strip on the NE flank was black in color (snow-free) due to elevated temperatures. On 13 August, gas-and-ash plumes rose to an altitude of 3.3 km (10,800 ft) a.s.l. and drifted E. Llaima update, 20 August 2008 21 August 2008
Posted by volcanismblog
[link to volcanism.wordpress.com]

On 18 August a Red Alert was imposed by the La Araucanía regional government on a number of localities around Llaima because of increased seismicity. ONEMI’s bulletin on this development notes that ‘The seismic activity recorded in recent days is comparable to that recorded in the days before the start of the eruption on 1 January and preceding the reactivation of February 2008′. SERNAGEOMIN’s alert for Llaima remains at Volcanic Alert Yellow.

The team at the Llaima visual observation project (POVI) have sent over (to Volcanismblog, please see link for images. They both show ash and cloud formations, no lava) the following two images, showing Llaima in eruption amid the clouds of 18 August. Both views are taken from the south and show the eruption plumes produced by the volcano’s sporadic ash emissions being blown eastwards (from left to right). The upper picture was taken at 16:20 local time and the lower at 17:17 local time.

Latest on Kasatochi and it's northern hemisphere impact.

The Aug 7 eruption of Kasatochi which ejected the large volume of SO2, has now spread beyond the North Americas and parts of the Atlantic. It's over europe as well. It's been estimated to be about 1.5Tg, but will likely will end up being approximated out to be a bit more when all is said and done.

AVO through satellite imagery hasn't seen any more plumes of ash from the volcano, nor have any more streams of SO2 been seen escaping since the initial eruption. Though, there still are earthquakes registered in the local area, so it may not be done.

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
Thursday, August 21, 2008 07:54 HST (Thursday, August 21, 2008 17:54 UTC)

KILAUEA VOLCANO (CAVW#1302-01-)
19.42°N 155.29°W, Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

This report on the status of Kilauea volcanic activity, in addition to maps, photos, and webcam images (available using the menu bar above), was prepared by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park status can be found at [link to www.nps.gov]

Activity Summary for last 24 hours: Kilauea summit continued to produce small amounts of ash and elevated amounts of sulfur dioxide gas from the Halema`uma`u vent; a DI tilt event started early this morning. At the east rift eruption site, Pu`u `O`o cone continued to produce high amounts of sulfur dioxide gas; the TEB eruption was stable with lava flowing through tubes to the ocean.

Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: At 3:40 pm, 7:41 pm yesterday, and 3:48 am this morning, single hybrid/explosion earthquakes occurred. The 3:48 am event was witnessed by many at Jaggar overlook and as far away as Akatsuka Orchid Farm 12.7 km (7.9 miles) away; the event itself was well recorded as an initial jet ejecting gas and ash at least 400 m (1,300 ft) vertically before being blown southwest by prevailing winds. The NPS eruption crew reported rock fall sounds from the vent around 6:50 pm and a wink associated with the 7:41 pm hybrid seismic event. Overnight, incandescence continued to be weak and was barely recorded on the webcam.

This morning, a white plume is rising from the Halema`uma`u vent and being blown southwestward low over the Ka`u Desert. Sulfur dioxide emission rates remained elevated and variable; the most recent average measurement was 800 tonnes/day on August 20 compared to a pre-2008 background rate between 150-200 tonnes/day. GOES-WEST imagery shows the plume going directly southwest inland of the coast between 6-7 am.

Ash production continued; although visually spectacular, yesterday afternoon's explosion apparently produced little more than fine rock dust with a small amount of volcanic glass bits. Almost continuous rock impact sounds could be heard during the ash collection routine.

The summit tiltmeter network recorded minor oscillations before an abrupt turn to inflation at 01:45 am followed by the start of a DI-tilt-event deflation at 01:56; the 3:40 pm and the 3:48 am hybrid earthquakes also produced small inflationary offsets. The network of GPS receivers that span the summit recorded no significant change in distance across the caldera.

Seismic tremor remained at moderate levels. The number of RB2S2BL earthquakes beneath Halema`uma`u Crater remained above background values of 40/d. Thirteen earthquakes were located beneath Kilauea: seven were beneath the southern summit caldera, three beneath an area immediately west of the southwest rift zone, two on Koa`e faults, and one on south flank faults.

Last 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents and flow field: Magma continued to degas through Pu`u `O`o Crater resulting in an emission of 3,200 tonnes/day of sulfur dioxide on August 20, down from a high of 7,100 tonnes/day on July 18 and near background values of about 2,000 tonnes/day. Two bursts of incandescence were observed within the central part of the crater around 3:30 am this morning.

The tiltmeter on the north side of Pu`u `O`o cone recorded minor oscillations before the start of DI tilt event deflation just after 4 am. GPS receivers recorded weak contraction across the crater. Seismic tremor levels were at background levels near Pu`u `O`o and near background levels with intermittent tremor bursts at the TEB vent.

Lava from the TEB vent and the rootless shield field flows through tubes to the ocean. Yesterday afternoon, HVO geologists found a single active ocean entry issuing a large plume and no surface flow activity. Overnight, no incandescence was visible from the rift zone to the top of the pali above the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision.

:NHSO2:
see [link to satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov]
for more imagery

Could well be in for a slightly colder winter than normal then in the northern hemisphere.
 Quoting: OxygenX

Zosmie already posted a thread saying that the Farmers Almanac has predicted that (pre Kasatochi eruption), so it may be a bit COLDER than even they thought for northern hemisphere. Southern Hemisphere I believe said it's been a darn cold winter there, so, makes sense, yeah. Buy extra firewood, or pellets for the pellet stove, get ready to bundle and snuggle.

NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS WEEKLY UPDATE
Friday, August 22, 2008 09:08 MPT (Thursday, August 21, 2008 23:08 UTC)

ANATAHAN VOLCANO (CAVW#0804-20=)
16.35°N 145.67°E, Summit Elevation 2592 ft (790 m)
Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Aviation Color Code: YELLOW

Report prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Seismicity remains low though occasional low-amplitude tremor bursts lasting minutes occasionally occur. No plumes have been reported.

On Aug. 20 there were a few low-amplitude tremor bursts lasting ~2 minutes.

On Aug. 21 there were two episodes of volcanic tremor - ~5 minutes of tremor starting at 16:15 UTC and ~50 minutes of tremor starting at 16:50 UTC. Subsequent seismicity returned to background levels.

During times of northerly winds, the Anatahan plume, if present, could be directed towards the CNMI and Guam. If this happens, residents may notice hazy air conditions and smell sulfur. The Emergency Management Office (EMO) of the CNMI government will issue volcanic haze and sulfur advisories if appropriate.

Access to the island may be restricted by the CNMI government. Contact the EMO to get the latest information.

CASCADES VOLCANO OBSERVATORY WEEKLY UPDATE
Friday, August 22, 2008 09:48 PDT (Friday, August 22, 2008 16:48 UTC)
[link to volcano.wr.usgs.gov]

Cascade Range Volcanoes
Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Aviation Color Code: GREEN

NOTICE: Mount St. Helens has been at Volcano Alert Level NORMAL and Aviation Color Code GREEN for the past month; therefore, we are migrating from a Mount St. Helens weekly update to a Cascade Range weekly update. As long as all Cascade Range volcanoes are at Normal and Green, we will continue to issue Cascade Range weekly updates. If a Cascade Range volcano shows signs of unrest, we will issue an update for that particular volcano.

Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range are at normal levels of background seismicity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry Volcano, and Crater Lake, in Oregon; and Medicine Lake, Mount Shasta, and Lassen Peak in northern California.

Recent Observations: Volcano seismicity at Mount St. Helens has remained quiet, although several seismometers near Crater Glacier are recording small rock fall events and 'ice quakes' resulting from glacier movement. Microwave links to the SEPT and VAULT seismic stations at Mount St. Helens were lost on Monday as a result of lightning strikes. Repairs were made and links were restored on Thursday. A field crew is at Three Sisters volcano this week, conducting deformation monitoring using GPS and leveling methods.

The U.S. Geological Survey and University of Washington continue to monitor these volcanoes closely and will issue additional updates and changes in alert level as warranted.

OKMOK VOLCANO
53°23'49" N 168°9'58" W, Summit Elevation 3520 ft (1073 m)
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE
Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH

Volcanic unrest continues at Okmok Volcano. Satellite data from Monday, August 18, indicated intermittent small ash emissions which drifted generally to the south and reached no higher than 10,000 to 15,000 feet. Beginning Tuesday, August 19, the level of seismic activity approached pre-eruption levels and satellite data showed that ash was no longer being emitted. Despite mostly cloudy conditions on Thursday, August 21, satellite observations show a possible thermal anomaly at the volcano. Seismic activity stayed near pre-eruption levels the remainder of the week.

Although the level of seismicity has declined and it appears that ash is no longer being erupted, it is possible for vigorous ash emissions to resume at any time.

KASATOCHI VOLCANO

Chaitén update, 22 August 2008
Posted by volcanismblog
[link to volcanism.wordpress.com]
Chaitén has been quiet today, with a low eruption plume dispersing to the north-east. SERNAGEOMIN, meanwhile, have released a new bulletin dated 21 August, derived from their ‘technical bulletin’ of 20 August, translated here. [link to volcanism.wordpress.com]
The latter was three pages long; the new bulletin, concise to the point of near-extinction, consists of two brief paragraphs and a picture of a white wide eruption plume. Translation as follows.

21.08.2008 SERNAGEOMIN bulletin regarding the eruption of Chaitén volcano

During recent days the eruptive activity of Chaitén volcano has remained without major changes, manifesting itself through a moderately vigorous eruption column, of around 2km altitude, with emission of pyroclasts, gases and water vapour.

The seismic behaviour of the emission centre, for its part, has presented a decreasing trend, without resulting in a significant diminution of the eruptive activity, as in previous periods. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the recorded seismic movements could be interpreted as indicative of the movement of magmatic fluids and rupturing of rocks inside the volcanic system.

Montserrat Volcano Observatory
Weekly Report for the period 15 – 22 August 2008
[link to www.mvo.ms.]

Although the lava dome at the Soufriere Hills Volcano has been obscured by cloud, all the evidence suggests that slow lava extrusion continues on the western side of the dome.

Rockfall and long-period seismic activity has increased. MVO recorded 34 rockfalls, 24 long period, 1 hybrid and 1 volcano-tectonic events this week. Most of the rockfalls were on the western side of the dome in the new channel that has developed below the Gages Wall. Some of the rockfalls generated small ash clouds, the most noticeable being on 16 and 17 August.

There was a small pyroclastic flow in the Tar River Valley at about 1:30 pm on Tuesday 19 August. This was probably caused by continuing erosion on the eastern side of the dome and not connected with the resumption of lava extrusion.

The average sulphur dioxide (SO2) flux for the week was 1122 tons per day (t/d) with a minimum of 274 t/d on August 20 and a maximum of 2033 t/d on August 17. These values are similar to the elevated values recorded since the explosion on 28 July.

Lava extrusion is expected to continue, and an increase in the extrusion rate cannot be ruled out. As more material is extruded, the lava should form a new lobe on the western flank of the dome. The steepness of the dome in this area makes it very likely that, as the dome grows, rockfall activity will increase and that this could generate pyroclastic flows on the western flank of the volcano.

The Hazard Level is 3.

At the east rift eruption site, Pu`u `O`o cone continued to produce high amounts of sulfur dioxide gas; the TEB eruption has resumed and lava is flowing through tubes to the ocean.

Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: Overnight, incandescence continued to be weak.

This morning, a white plume is rising from the Halema`uma`u vent and being blown southwestward over the Ka`u Desert. Sulfur dioxide emission rates remained elevated and variable; the most recent average measurement was 600 tonnes/day on August 22 compared to a pre-2008 background rate between 150-200 tonnes/day. GOES-WEST imagery shows the plume going southwest well inland of the coast at 6:30 am.

The summit tiltmeter network recorded weak inflation after the completion of the 8/21 DI tilt event. The network of GPS receivers that span the summit recorded weak contraction across the caldera.

Seismic tremor remained at moderate levels. Two small hybrid earthquakes occurred at 6:02 and 11:22 pm. The number of RB2S2BL earthquakes beneath Halema`uma`u Crater remained above background values of 40/d. Fifteen earthquakes were located beneath Kilauea: nine were beneath the southern summit caldera, three beneath an area immediately west of the summit, two beneath the area where the Koa`e faults intersect the east rift zone, and one on south flank faults.

Last 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents and flow field: Magma continued to degas through Pu`u `O`o Crater resulting in an emission of 1,800 tonnes/day of sulfur dioxide on August 22, down from a high of 7,100 tonnes/day on July 18 and near background values of about 2,000 tonnes/day. No incandescence was observed within the crater overnight.

The tiltmeter on the north side of Pu`u `O`o cone recorded minor oscillations but no significant change. GPS receivers recorded weak contraction across the crater. Seismic tremor levels were at background levels near Pu`u `O`o and the TEB vent.

Lava from the TEB vent and the rootless shield field flows through tubes to the ocean. Yesterday morning, CD officials reported no entry plume at dawn, a pause resulting from the 8/21 DI tilt event. It was short-lived as GOES-WEST imagery sported a prominent thermal anomaly starting at 12:15 pm; CD officials reported that the ocean entry at Waikupanaha had resumed at about 1:15 pm. Overnight, there was no incandescence anywhere from the TEB vent area to the top of the pali above the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision.

Chaitén update, 23 August 2008 23 August 2008

A new SERNAGEOMIN ’special report’ on the Chaitén eruption, dated 21 August 2008, arrived by e-mail today. It is very brief, just one page. The ‘rapid increase in seismicity’ described in the report is the most interesting point to emerge. Translation as follows:

CHAITÉN SPECIAL REPORT, 21.08.08

During the day, because of the cloud cover in the area, it was not possible to see the eruptive activity clearly. Through the cameras installed at the airfield it was possible to see a small part of the column, without being able to quantify its dimensions or other characteristics.

The telemetry stations PUMA and SANTA BÁRBARA, from 19 August onwards, have registered a rapid increase in seismicity. The increase has been in the number of both hybrids (HB) and VT-type earthquakes. Today, 21 August (Fig. 1) a count of between 3 and 8 earthquakes per hour was achieved, the majority of type HB and 1-3 of type VT. Within the VT-type earthquakes that of 02:38 GMT stands out, which registered a magnitude of 1.7M. According to the arrival time of the ‘S-P’ waves, these earthquakes are located mainly in the sector south of the volcano.

Mindful that the eruptive activity continues and that a slight increase in the number of HB earthquakes has been detected, reflecting movement of magmatic fluids and the rupturing of rocks within the interior of the volcanic system, which feeds the volcanic activity, along with the presence of some VT-type earthquakes, SERNAGEOMIN maintains Volcanic Red Alert and ongoing monitoring of developments in the eruption.

Chaiten area airport north view. Low lying clouds tend to make it hard to view much of the plume, but there is an occasional glimpse. Still a smallish plume from what it had been doing upon occasion. THough, with the increase in VT and HB earthquakes, it does seem like there will be another event, maybe small again, but it seems to be possibly building.

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
Monday, August 25, 2008 07:46 HST (Monday, August 25, 2008 17:46 UTC)

At the east rift eruption site, Pu`u `O`o cone continued to produce high amounts of sulfur dioxide gas; lava is flowing through tubes to the ocean.

Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: A hybrid/explosion earthquake at 10:30 pm had no observable effect on the look of the vent recorded by the webcam. Overnight, incandescence continued to be weak as recorded by the webcam although more than one individual remarked that the glow appeared unusually strong.

GOES-WEST imagery shows the plume going more southward directly to Ka`aha on the coast.

Ash production continued. Rock impact, or clatter, sounds could be heard by NPS observers at Jaggar museum at twilight last night and could still be heard distinctly this morning during the collection routine.

The summit tiltmeter network recorded minor oscillations with weak deflation apparent at some but not all sites. The network of GPS receivers that span the summit recorded no significant change in distance across the caldera.

Seismic tremor remained at moderate levels. The number of RB2S2BL earthquakes beneath Halema`uma`u Crater remained above background values of 40/d. Eighteen earthquakes were located beneath Kilauea: 11 were beneath the southern summit caldera or areas immediately adjacent, three beneath the southwest rift zone, and four on south flank faults.

The tiltmeter on the north side of Pu`u `O`o cone recorded minor oscillations over weak deflation. GPS receivers recorded weak contraction across the crater. Seismic tremor levels were at background levels near Pu`u `O`o and continued to fluctuate near the TEB vent.

Lava from the TEB vent and the rootless shield field flows through tubes to the ocean. Yesterday, HVO geologists observed no active surface flows anywhere on the flow field. The Waikupanaha ocean entry was producing a moderate-sized plume. A bench collapses was reported by CD officials Saturday evening but there was little evidence reamining by noon yesterday. Overnight, no incandescence was observed from the rift zone to the top of the pali above the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision.

Llaima Volcano Chile update
Aug 26, 2008

The slow Llaima eruption cycle continues and began August 13 with minor amounts of ash being visible. The weather around Llaima volcano in central Chile was clear over the past few days, enabling the cameras operated by the Llaima visual observation project (POVI) to capture some good images. The last strong eruption eruption event at Llaima was July 26. The volcano has produced a pyroclastic cone about 80 metres wide, where the ash is being emitted from.

Some great images and videos which can be accessed via the POVI Llaima website.
[link to www.povi.cl]
The volcano has been going pretty much non-stop since May 2007, but has maintained a number of slow cycles where little to nothing has been emitted, followed by the occasional strong eruption. The local geologist expect strong eruptions to continue to happen in the future. At the moment, their webcam view, on the main page of POVI, is clouded over.
