Chaiten area airport north view. Cloud cover is low to moderate and high today. You can see a nice and reasonable plume coming off the volcano in some of the shots, and since it appears wind in gentle you can almost see the 2 eruption columns combining into 1 as it rises just above the hill line. Good viewing today.

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
Sunday, September 14, 2008 06:52 HST (Sunday, September 14, 2008 16:52 UTC)

KILAUEA VOLCANO (CAVW#1302-01-)
19.42°N 155.29°W, Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

This report on the status of Kilauea volcanic activity, in addition to maps, photos, and webcam images (available using the menu bar above), was prepared by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park status can be found at [link to www.nps.gov]

Activity Summary for last 24 hours: No significant changes in volcanic activity have occurred. Sulfur dioxide emission rates from both the Halema`uma`u and Pu`u `O`o vents remain high, slack winds have caused the plumes to linger around the vents and air quality is poor at Kilauea summit. Lava continues to flow through tubes originating at the east rift eruption site and is entering the ocean west of Kalapana.

Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: Continuing light and variable winds have caused the plume direction to fluctuate; it remained white and lazy but was not very visible because the summit was quite foggy. Glow from the Halema`uma`u vent overnight was weak and variable. This morning, the summit is foggy and hazy with poor air quality; the plume from the Halema`uma`u vent is ascending vertically but is barely visible through the haze at 6:30 am.

Sulfur dioxide emission rates remained elevated and variable. The most recent average measurement was 800 tonnes/day on September 11, compared to a pre-2008 background rate of 150-200 tonnes/day. GOES-WEST satellite images show winds from the east moving clouds to the west into the flank of Mauna Loa this morning.

The summit tiltmeter network recorded weak inflation since yesterday afternoon but the GPS stations spanning the summit caldera recorded no significant changes.

Seismic tremor has been at steady moderate levels. Eleven earthquakes were located beneath Kilauea or nearby, including 3 beneath the southern summit caldera, 1 beneath the lower southwest rift zone, and 4 on south flank faults. The number of RB2S2BL earthquakes beneath Halema`uma`u Crater was slightly elevated at 50-60/day.

Last 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents and flow field: Magma continues to degas through Pu`u `O`o Crater. The most recent sulfur dioxide measurement of 1,700 tonnes/day on September 8 is near background levels for this vent over the past 25.5 years. No incandescence was observed within the crater overnight. The tiltmeter on the north side of Pu`u `O`o recorded inflation since noon yesterday. GPS stations spanning the crater continued to record contraction. Seismic tremor levels at Pu`u `O`o and the TEB vent remained low.

Lava from the TEB vent and the complex of rootless shields continues to flow through tubes to the ocean. MODIS satellite imagery showed a prominent ocean entry plume yesterday morning - the result of lava flowing into the ocean during slack winds. No incandescence was observed from the rift zone to the top of the pali above the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision overnight. No new thermal anomalies have appeared in the GOES-WEST satellite imagery - there have been no substantial surface flows; a weak entry plume may be visible this morning.

Colombian authorities are evacuating the area around Nevada del Huila after increased seismicity suggests that the volcano will erupt soon. There have been over 700 earthquakes - many of which are clearly related to moving magma - over the last week or so, indicating that Huila might be entering a new period of eruption.
 Quoting: Erik

From the location of earthquakes in Columbia I would say Nevado del Tolima looks more likely to erupt.
 Quoting: OxygenX

Hey OxygenX.
It's possible. There are also faults in the area and Erik's article didn't say if they were hybrid, VT or standard type earthquakes. Immediately, I couldn't find the original article he was linking to, the site wouldn't come up. I think Erik's link was broken. I finally found the original article.
[link to colombiareports.com]
"Residents have been urged to abandon their homes in a scattering of towns in the western departments of Cauca and Huila as officials put a yellow alert in effect in expectation of the eruption of Volcano Nevado del Huila.

As many as 108 seismic events are occuring daily, up from between 80 and 89 in the last week of August, Adriana Agudelo Restrepo, technical coordinator of the Colombian Institute of Geology and Minerology in Popayán, told El Pais.

In the last eight days, 761 seismic events have been registered, including 197 relating to fluid dynamics inside volcanoes, and the most powerful have registered up to 4.6 on the Ritcher scale. If this level of activity continues, the alert level will rise to orange, reported El Pais.

April of last year, the alert in the area rose to red and inhabitants of the municipality of Paéz-Belalcázar, Cauca, had to evacuate in the middle of the night.

In 1994, more than 1,000 people were killed when an avalanche provoked an eruption of Volcano Nevado del Huila."

So, it does suggest types and I am assuming that the local geologists wouldn't tell locals to run if it wasn't suggestive of the specific volcano. I'm hoping that if it is for Huila, that the locals do heed the suggestion and get themselves and their animals to safety.

Volcano Nevado del Huila remains unstable and at risk of erupting, officials said Monday, a day after a 4.0 earthquake shook the cone in southcentral Colombia. A yellow alert remains in effect in the zone and the National Emergency System has prepared to evacuate local resients in case of an eruption, reported Caracol Radio. Geologists from the Popayán Volcano Observatory said that although the cone is shedding ice from its northern slope, they anticipate no repeat of the avalanches into the canyons of the Páez and Simbolá rivers that occurred the last three times the volcano heated up. The current activity dates to the first days of September. The volcano has not caused a major disaster since 1994, when an eruption caused an avalanche that killed more than 1,000 people.)

Thanks AC411190. I couldn't get on until just now. I'm hoping they do evacuate people and animals. It's rough living near a volcano, but at least we have a pretty good notification system in for most known active volcanoes.

Danger posed by Vesuvius downgraded from “Biblical” to “Monumental”
September 16, 2008 by Erik Klemetti
[link to eruptions.wordpress.com]

For those of us who track volcanoes and the hazards they present, the general consensus is that Mount Vesuvius in Italy is probably the most dangerous volcano in the world today. This is not because it is the biggest or most powerful, but because it is located on the outskirts of Naples, Italy, a city with over 2 million inhabitants (including the surrounding area). Evacuating such an area quickly and efficiently during a time of crisis might be, well, impossible. We know that Vesuvius can be destructive - just look at the fact that much of the Naples area is built on the deposits of the volcano that has repeated buried the area (and former cities like Pompeii and Herculaneum) - and we know it is a vigorously active volcano, with its last eruption only ~60 years ago. Naples is a powder keg for potential volcanic destruction, and it is just waiting for the spark that Vesuvius might provide.

However, with all that being said, there have been a flurry of recent reports downplaying the potential destructive future behavior at Vesuvius. The long and short of this research conducted by Michel Pichavant and Bruno Scaillet from the University of Orleans (France) is that the magma chamber at Vesuvius is getting shallower (closer to the surface) over the last few thousand years. Their findings (although never explained in the articles is how they came to these findings, a big peeve of mine) suggest that the magma chamber that produced the lavas that have erupted in the last few hundred years (my italics) has risen from ~5 km depth to ~2.5 km depth. This might suggest that future eruptions if from this chamber (my italics) might be less explosive as magma stored at shallower depths to degas easier (less confining pressure), thus preventing catastrophic degassing that produces explosive eruptions - think of the different between opening a bottle of fresh soda (deep chamber) versus flat soda (shallow chamber). These data are interesting, however, they only suggest that the recently tapped magma chamber is shallower. It does not offer any insight to whether future eruptions might originate from deeper in the system if there is a new influx of magma from depth. If that is the case, all bets are off in terms of the lower perceived danger of Vesuvius.

Activity Summary for last 24 hours: Sulfur dioxide emission rates from both the Halema`uma`u and Pu`u `O`o vents remain high, trade winds are again blowing the gases to the southwest. Lava continues to flow through tubes originating at the east rift eruption site and is entering the ocean west of Kalapana.

Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: The plume ascending from the Halema`uma`u vent resumed its trade wind arc yesterday moving southwest over the Ka`u Desert. Glow from the Halema`uma`u vent overnight was weak and variable. This morning, the plume is rising inclined to the southwest before leveling off at about 300 m (1,000 ft) above the Ka`u Desert. GOES-WEST imagery shows the plume extending southwest inland of the coast at 6:45 am.

This morning's tephra collection yielded somewhat smaller amounts than yesterday's bounty. The tephra is still dominantly glassy fragments in various shapes.

Sulfur dioxide emission rates remained elevated and variable. The most recent average measurement was 1,100 tonnes/day on September 15, compared to a pre-2008 background rate of 150-200 tonnes/day.

The summit tiltmeter network and GPS stations spanning the summit caldera recorded no significant inflation or deflation.

Seismic tremor remained at steady moderate levels but the number of earthquakes under Kilauea increased. At least 5 hybrid/explosion type earthquakes were recorded; none were associated with ashy plumes or unusual bursts of incandescence. Seven earthquakes were located beneath Kilauea or nearby, including three beneath the southern summit caldera and three on south flank faults. The number of RB2S2BL earthquakes beneath Halema`uma`u Crater remained elevated around 80/d (background less than 40/d).

The tiltmeter on the north side of Pu`u `O`o recorded deflation over the past week weakening in the last day. GPS stations spanning the crater continued to record contraction. Seismic tremor levels near Pu`u `O`o and the TEB vent remained at low levels.

Lava from the TEB vent and the complex of rootless shields continued to flow through tubes to the ocean. No incandescence was observed from the rift zone to the top of the pali above the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision overnight. No thermal anomalies are visible in the GOES-WEST satellite imagery suggesting no surface flow activity on the flow field.

Chaitén update, 17 September 2008
Posted by volcanismblog
[link to volcanism.wordpress.com]
The latest technical report from SERNAGEOMIN, covering the period 8-16 September, has just arrived by e-mail. The full Spanish text can be found as a PDF at Werner Luis’s Chaitén site. [link to inglaner.com]
Translation as follows:

ERUPTION OF CHAITÉN VOLCANO
TECHNICAL REPORT NO. 53
8-16 SEPTEMBER 2008
OVDAS-SERNAGEOMIN

1. Visual monitoring

During the period of this report and in a similar manner to the previous report, the eruptive activity has remained relatively low and slightly fluctuating, with two eruption columns of little vigour and low density, one with a greater proportion of ash in the south and the other with a predominance of water vapour in the north, varying between 1.0 and 1.5km in height, dispersing according to the prevailing winds.

2. Seismic activity

The seismic activity has also, for at least one month, remained relatively low, although with oscillating behaviour. It has been characterized, principally, by a variation in the number and energy of the HB-type earthquakes (the predominant earthquakes), in the energy of background tremor and in the number and magnitude of the VT-type earthquakes, with additionally rare cases of LP-type earthquakes.

The RSAM (Real-time Seismic Amplitude Measurement) was calculated for the month of September, which clearly graphed the oscillation of the energy released by the seismicity, basically reflected by the energy of the background tremor. Increments of background tremor detected by RSAM between 3 and 6, and 9 and 13 September, reaffirmed the oscillating character of the seismic activity.

Between 3 and 6 September, the relative increase of seismicity was related to a greater amplitude (energy) of the low-frequency background tremor, with an average of 6-8 HB- and VT-type events per hour and with the occurrence of LP-type earthquakes, which meant a more vigorous eruption column (around 3.0km in height on 3 September) and a higher rate of emission of gas and ash. During 9-13 September a smaller increase than the preceding one was recorded (Fig. 1).

3. Conclusions and interpretation

During the last month, the eruptive and seismic activity has remained relatively low and oscillating, with a predominance of HB-type earthquakes over VT- and LP-type earthquakes, plus a background tremor of low frequency, all declining in number and/or energy. The seismic energy released has depended, principally, on the energy of the low-frequency background tremor.

Over the past few days there has been a greater decline in eruptive and seismic activity, this last characterized by an absence of low-frequency background tremor, with the consequent decline in the energy released by the 2-5 HB-type earthquakes per hour and very rare VT-type earthquakes, which have not exceeded magnituded 1.0M. The preceding has been associated with a lower rate of emission of gas and ashes.

While the eruptive activity and the seismicity have remained relatively low and moderately oscillating for several weeks, SERNAGEOMIN maintains Volcanic Red Alert.

alert bulletin: Sep 18 2008, 11:00 am - Ruapehu Volcano
Volcanic Alert Bulletin RUA-08/05 - Status report; Volcanic Alert Level remains at Level 1
[link to www.geonet.org.nz]

Ruapehu is showing signs of entering a new heating cycle. Gas output, lake temperature and volcanic tremor have all shown reversals of recent trends. These demonstrate typical behaviour for Ruapehu. The Alert Level remains at Level 1.

Ongoing monitoring at Ruapehu, including a recent Crater Lake visit to measure the lake temperature and collect water samples, data from airborne gas measurements and seismic activity, have shown changes in the last month. These changes indicate that the period of lake cooling and lower gas flux is over.

The Crater Lake temperature has now increased to 22 °C, up from 16 °C in August. This temperature change was accompanied by some volcanic tremor. From October 2007 to June 2008 the lake temperature ranged between 34 to 37 °C before declining to a low of 16 °C in August 2008. The airborne gas plume measurements have shown a similar trend with SO2 and CO2 gas emissions being high while the lake was hot, decreasing when the lake cooled and now increasing again. Cyclic activity in the Crater Lake is very common at Ruapehu.

These observations are consistent with the volcano-hydrothermal system now being more open to the Crater Lake. This type of volcano unrest should result in the lake temperature continuing to rise and the lake colour changing as sediments on the lake floor are disturbed by the increased gas flow into the lake. Ruapehu remains an active volcano and future eruptions may occur without warning.

The Volcanic Alert Level remains at Level 1 (departure from typical background surface activity, signs of unrest).

Sheveluch Volcano, Russia - John Seach
A dome collapse has occurred at Sheveluch volcano in Russia on 13th September. The south western side of the dome collapsed creating ash which rose to 6500 m above sea level. The ash plume drifted 100 km NE. The dome collapse was accompanied by lava flows. Sheveluch is one of the most active volcanoes in Kamchatka.

It's a sdtratovolcano located at 56.653 N, 161.360 E with summit elevation 3283 m.

Shiveluch is one of the most active volcanoes on the Kamchatka peninsula. It is located in northern Kamchatka. It contains unusual rocks, similar to adakites. The eruptions are usually explosive. The volcano is noted for repeated large flank failures. Large flank failures occurred in 1964, 1970, 1995, 1999.

The closest town near the Sheveluch is Klyuchi (population 5,000) located at a distance of 50 kilometres from the volcano.

Montserrat Volcano Observatory
Weekly Report for the period 13 – 19 September 2008

Activity at the Soufriere Hills Volcano this week has been at a low level, consisting mainly of continued rockfalls and mudflows. Although the lava dome has been obscured by cloud most of the time, all evidence suggests that slow lava extrusion continues on the western side of the dome.

Seismic activity continues at a low level. MVO recorded 23 rockfalls, 1 hybrid and 2 volcano-tectonic events this week.

The sulphur dioxide (SO2) flux was 989 tons per day in average for the week, with a minimum of 657 on September 13 and a maximum of 1217 on September 17, which is lower than the week before.

Lava extrusion is expected to continue. Visual observations along with the monitoring signals suggest that the extrusion rate is relatively low, but an increase cannot be ruled out. Pyroclastic flows may occur without any warning, especially when there is heavy rainfall.

The Hazard Level is 3.

Additional information on the Soufrière Hills Volcano and the new Hazard Level System can be found at the MVO website: [link to www.mvo.ms.]

Alaska Volcano Observatory
Weekly Update
Friday, September 19, 2008 10:21 AM AKDT (18:21 UTC)

KASATOCHI VOLCANO
52°10'9" N 175°30'41" W, Summit Elevation 1030 ft (314 m)
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY

Low level seismicity at Kasatochi continues. Intermittent power outages in Adak affected AVO's seismic networks in the Kasatochi area earlier this week. Satellite views were mostly cloudy throughout much of the week. Clear satellite views Wednesday night show a thermal anomaly and a small steam plume.

Kasatochi Volcano does not have a seismic network, thus AVO depends on networks on neighboring islands to monitor earthquake activity there. For this reason, low-level seismicity may not be detected. Renewed volcanic activity is possible at any time with little or no warning.

OKMOK VOLCANO
53°23'49" N 168°9'58" W, Summit Elevation 3520 ft (1073 m)
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY

Seismicity at Okmok volcano continues at low levels. There has been a small increase in seismic activity over the last few days. Satellite views remain cloudy throughout the week. An AVO field crew working on the volcano safely returned on Monday. They reported steaming, but not other eruptive activity. Work is underway processing the many rock and ash samples, gps data, and FLIR thermal cam data. They have posted some of their field photos to our website image database.

Although the level of seismicity is relatively low, it is possible for vigorous ash emissions to resume at any time.

CLEVELAND VOLCANO
52°49'20" N 169°56'42" W, Summit Elevation 5676 ft (1730 m)
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY

Clouds obscure Cleveland volcano in satellite and web camera views throughout the week. AVO received no reports of activity at the volcano.

AVO monitors Cleveland Volcano with satellite imagery as weather allows. The lack of a real-time seismic network at Cleveland means that AVO is unable to track local earthquake activity related to volcanic unrest. Short-lived explosions of ash that could exceed 20,000 ft above sea level can occur without warning and may go undetected on satellite imagery.

OTHER ALASKA VOLCANOES

Seismic activity is monitored in real time at 30 volcanoes in Alaska. Satellite images of all Alaskan volcanoes are analyzed daily for evidence of ash plumes and elevated surface temperatures. Some volcanoes may currently display anomalous behavior but are not considered to be at a dangerous level of unrest. Augustine, Iliamna, Redoubt, Wrangell, Gareloi, Great Sitkin, Makushin, Fisher, Shishaldin, Isanotski, Pavlof, Veniaminof, Ugashik-Ugashik-Peulik, Griggs, Snowy, Fourpeaked, Aniakchak, Tanaga, Kanaga, Akutan, Westdahl, Dutton, Ukinrek Maars, Martin, Mageik, Trident, Katmai, Novarupta, Spurr, and Korovin volcanoes are in color code GREEN and volcano alert level Normal. All are at or near normal levels of background seismicity. AVO did not detect ash plumes or significant elevated surface temperatures in the vicinity of any volcano.

The Long Valley Observatory (LVO) monitors and studies earthquakes, ground deformation, degassing, and other types of geologic unrest in and around the Long Valley Caldera. The 15 by 30 km Long Valley Caldera was formed during an eruption 760,000 years ago and is located 20 km south of Mono Lake along the east side of the Sierra Nevada in east-central California. There have been multiple smaller eruptions since the caldera-forming eruption with the most recent occurring 250 years ago in Mono Lake at the north end of Mono-Inyo Craters volcanic chain. LVO is one of the five USGS Volcano Observatories that monitor volcanoes within the United States for science and public safety.

New eruption at Piton de la Fournaise
September 21, 2008 by Erik Klemetti
[link to eruptions.wordpress.com]

It seems that a new fissure eruption has begun at Piton de la Fournaise on Reunion Island in the Pacific Ocean. In fact, the report goes onto say that a small lava lake has formed at the main crater of the eruption. This marks the first eruption at Piton de la Fournaise since March 2007.

Piton de la Fournaise is a large shield volcano associated with the Reunion Island Hotspot. The volcano has frequent eruptions, mostly in the form of effusive lava flows of basalt, similar to the Hawaiian volcanoes. This could be an interesting new eruption because the initial eruptions suggest this is a flank eruption outside the caldera, but this might just be a product of a mistaken report.

Reported as follows:
Eruption reported at Reunion's volcano
[link to afp.google.com]
7 hours ago (9/21/08)
SAINT DENIS, Reunion (AFP) — A volcano on France's Indian Ocean island of Reunion started erupting on Sunday, forcing authorities to raise the alert for a possible emergency.
"A light lava flow escaped from one crack located about mid-way on the slope of the crater" of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano, Reunion authorities said in a statement.
"A small lake of lava formed at the bottom of the crater and at this stage does not appear to pose any danger," the statement said.
However, access to the volcanic site has been banned.
The Volcano Observatory on the island, a French department, registered a movement of lava and release of sulfur dioxyde-laden gas mid-afternoon on Sunday, the authorities said.
The eruption is the first since the violent awakening in April 2007 which was dubbed the "eruption of the century."
The eruption resulted in the collapse of the volcano's summit, with magma at times being spewed as high as 200 metres (656 feet) into the air.
Lava flow had been estimated at three million cubic metres (four million cubic yards) per day.
The volcano on Reunion, at an altitude of 2,632 metres, is one of the most active in the world. It has become active on average about twice a year over the past few years.
It does not pose a threat to the island's population as the eruptions which can usually be predicted take place in an uninhabited area.

Piton de la Fournaise Volcano, Reunion - John Seach
An eruption began at Piton de la Fournaise volcano on Sunday 21st September 2008. A small lava pond formed in the bottom of Dolomieu crater fed by a fissure on the west side. The eruption was accompanied by ten earthquakes. High levels of sulphur dioxide have been reported at the volcano. This is the first eruption of Piton de la Fournaise volcano since the large eruption in April 2007, which was called the "eruption of the century."

Sheveluch Volcano, Kamchatka, Russia - John Seach
Eruptions continue at Sheveluch volcano in Russia. Lava flow is effusing on the south-western flank of the lava dome. Seismicity was above background levels this week. Hot avalanches occurred at the lava dome, and fumarolic activity. The volcano presents a hazard to low flying aircraft with ash explosions up to 10 km (32,800 ft.) altitude possible at any time.

Hi Geogal.

Reunion island webcams and updates (in French) here:
[link to ovpf.univ-reunion.fr]

So far nothing to see as the eruption is small.

Todays update with a couple of pictures here:
[link to ovpf.univ-reunion.fr]

Translated by Babelfish:
"Eruption in progress

The intensity of lava flow in Dolomieu decreased since yesterday. The associated trémor has fallen from a factor 8 increased since yesterday and slightly for a few hours. No seism was observed since the beginning of the eruption.

The eruptive activity is limited in the Dolomieu crater. Some hair of Shovel was dispersed around the top, without reaching the area except enclosure.

The situation seems stabilized enough

ThS"

I don't know what hair of shovel is, presumably like Pele's hair.

Enjoy.
