Hi Geogal.

Reunion island webcams and updates (in French) here:
[link to ovpf.univ-reunion.fr]

So far nothing to see as the eruption is small.

Todays update with a couple of pictures here:
[link to ovpf.univ-reunion.fr]

Translated by Babelfish:
"Eruption in progress

The intensity of lava flow in Dolomieu decreased since yesterday. The associated trémor has fallen from a factor 8 increased since yesterday and slightly for a few hours. No seism was observed since the beginning of the eruption.

The eruptive activity is limited in the Dolomieu crater. Some hair of Shovel was dispersed around the top, without reaching the area except enclosure.

The situation seems stabilized enough

ThS"

I don't know what hair of shovel is, presumably like Pele's hair.

Enjoy.
 Quoting: Brassia Rex 373696

hey Brassia Rex
thanks much for the info and links! great stuff!

yes, "hair of shovel" is the same thing and formation as pele's hair.
"The hair of Shovel are a volcanic formation which takes the form length and fine filaments of Lave stretched by the wind. These formations cannot come that from very fluid basaltic lava as it is the case with the Kilauea or the Piton of the Furnace.

The name of “hair of Shovel” comes from the goddess hawaïenne of fire and the volcanos Pélé. According to the legend, it would have been driven out of Tahiti by her sister Na-maka-O-Kaha' I the goddess of the Eau and would have found refuge in Kilauea. This legend is the illustration of the hot phenomenon of Point which is responsible for the appearance of the volcanic islands of the Archipel S of the Pacific Ocean.

With the Meeting, the hair of Shovel is also called “capillary Obsidienne” or “hair of volcanos”.

The liquid lava, carried by the more or less strong and more or less constant winds, can be stretched in filaments more or less long and more or less thick. The capillary can be finished by a more or less large drop (the “Larmes of Shovel”) according to the Viscosité of the lava and the force of the wind.

The farmers consider this volcanic formation as a natural disaster because when these filaments are found in the fields and the meadows, they waste harvests and are dangerous for the Bétail. Indeed the hair of Shovel is as hard, breakable and cutting as Verre what makes unsuitable to consumption the cultures and can be dangerous for the animals which can perforate the stomach and the intestines by introducing them."

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
Monday, September 22, 2008 05:12 HST (Monday, September 22, 2008 15:12 UTC)
[link to volcano.wr.usgs.gov]

KILAUEA VOLCANO (CAVW#1302-01-)
19.42°N 155.29°W, Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

This report on the status of Kilauea volcanic activity, in addition to maps, photos, and webcam images (available using the menu bar above), was prepared by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park status can be found at [link to www.nps.gov]

Activity Summary for last 24 hours: A DI tilt event completed yesterday at the summit and at Pu`u `O`o. Sulfur dioxide emission rates from both the Halema`uma`u and Pu`u `O`o vents remain high. Lava was interrupted yesterday in its flow to the ocean, as is a common result of DI tilt events.

Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: The plume rose from Halema`uma`u vent and moved to the southwest over the Ka`u Desert. Glow from the Halema`uma`u vent overnight was moderately strong and variable.

Sulfur dioxide emission rates remained elevated and variable. The most recent average measurement was 800 tonnes/day on September 16, compared to a pre-2008 background rate of 150-200 tonnes/day.

The summit tiltmeter network recorded completion of the DI tilt event with inflation starting about 10:20 am; summit tilt switched to deflation at 2 am this morning. GPS receivers on either side of the summit caldera showed no contraction or extension over the past two weeks.

Seismic tremor remained at steady moderate levels. Nine earthquakes were located beneath Kilauea or nearby, including five beneath the southern summit caldera and four on south flank faults. The number of RB2S2BL earthquakes beneath Halema`uma`u Crater increased slightly to values just over 70/day.

Last 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents and flow field: Magma continues to degas through Pu`u `O`o Crater. The most recent sulfur dioxide measurement of 1,700 tonnes/day on September 8 is near background levels for this vent over the past 25.5 years. No incandescence was observed within the crater overnight.

The tiltmeter on the north side of Pu`u `O`o recorded the inflation portion of the DI tilt event just after 11 am, about an hour after inflation started at the summit. GPS stations spanning the crater continued to record contraction. Seismic tremor levels near Pu`u `O`o and the TEB vent decreased slightly.

Lava from the TEB vent and the complex of rootless shields continued to flow through tubes to the ocean. CD officials reported no ocean entry plume yesterday, suggesting the DI tilt event resulted in a decrease in lava supply to the tube system. No GOES-WEST thermal anomalies were visible at the coast overnight suggesting no new surface flow activity. If past patterns hold, there may be an increase in activity levels on the TEB flow field following the second, or inflation, phase of the completing DI tilt event.

Activity Summary for last 24 hours: A second, smaller DI tilt event completed yesterday at the summit and at Pu`u `O`o. Sulfur dioxide emission rates from both the Halema`uma`u and Pu`u `O`o vents remain high. Lava has resumed its flow to the ocean.

Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: The plume rose from Halema`uma`u vent and moved to the southwest over the Ka`u Desert yesterday. Glow from the Halema`uma`u vent overnight was moderately strong and variable. This morning, the plume is rising as per usual and moving to the southwest over the Ka`u Desert; there was a short-lived ashy plume at 7:44 am following a small, local earthquake.

The plume continued to produce detectable amounts of tephra, which consists mostly of small bits of volcanic glass. The background rates of tephra production, which are generally very small, have been unusually high in September.

Sulfur dioxide emission rates remained elevated and variable. The most recent average measurement was 1,200 tonnes/day on September 21, compared to a pre-2008 background rate of 150-200 tonnes/day.

The summit tiltmeter network recorded completion of the second DI tilt event in the past three days with inflation starting about 10:30 am. GPS receivers on either side of the summit caldera (less sensitive than tiltmeters) showed no contraction or extension over the past two weeks.

Seismic tremor remained at steady moderate levels. Eight earthquakes were located beneath Kilauea or nearby, including two beneath the southern summit caldera and two on south flank faults. The number of RB2S2BL earthquakes beneath Halema`uma`u Crater remain slightly elevated at values just over 50/day.

Last 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents and flow field: Magma continues to degas through Pu`u `O`o Crater. The most recent sulfur dioxide measurement of 1,700 tonnes/day on September 22 is near background levels for this vent over the past 25.5 years. No incandescence was observed within the crater overnight.

The tiltmeter on the north side of Pu`u `O`o recorded the inflation portion of the second DI tilt event around noon, about 1.5 hours after inflation started at the summit. GPS stations spanning the crater continued to record contraction. Seismic tremor levels near Pu`u `O`o and the TEB vent remain low.

Lava from the TEB vent and the complex of rootless shields continued to flow through tubes to the ocean. CD officials reported no persistent ocean entry plume yesterday, suggesting the back-to-back DI tilt events resulted in a decrease in lava supply to the tube system. A single burst of incandescence was observed just after midnight from one of the lower rootless shields and the GOES-WEST satellite detected thermal anomalies starting about the same time and fading by 7:15 am at the coast this morning, suggesting temporary surface flow activity; lava has returned to the tube system. There was no obvious ocean entry plume in the GOES-WEST early morning images but the plume may not yet be big enough to be seen from space. CD officials reported that the ocean plume started to grow substantially around 8 am suggesting lava is again entering the ocean.

Extraterrestrial Volcanism on Io [Accretionary Wedge]
Sunday, September 21, 2008 in Planetary Geology, [link to geology.rockbandit.net]

Source: Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Prior to Voyager 1’s flyby of Io in March of 1979, geologists and other scientists back home on Earth had evidence that active volcanism was currently only taking place on our own planet. There was plenty of evidence that volcanism happened on other celestial bodies in the past, such as Olympus Mons on Mars and the large basalt flows on our own Moon.

Voyager 1’s flyby changed that by giving us direct evidence that extraterrestial volcanism was actively happening on other celestial bodies. An engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California was analyzing images from the recent flyby of Io and noticed a plume emanating from the surface.

Since scientists initially discovered those plumes nearly 30 years ago, Io has been the focus of much research and observation. We now know that it is one of the most volcanically active bodies in our solar system, having to deal with the gravitational tug of war subjected on it by Jupiter. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has an excellent explanation on why Io is so volcanically active:

Io is situated between Jupiter and two of Jupiter’s large moons - Europa and Ganymede. The gravitational force exerted by Jupiter and its moons creates a tidal bulge more than 100 meters (330 feet) high on Io’s surface. Remember, this is a tide created in the solid rock of Io’s crust! As Io rotates around Jupiter, the tidal bulge moves, Io’s crust is flexed, and tremendous heat is generated - much like the heat generated in a piece of wire when it is quickly bent back and forth. This heat drives the volcanic activity so prevalent on Io.

100 meter tides that move through the solid crust of Io? That is ridiculous!

What is all the lava that erupts on Io composed of? Scientists do not know for certain the composition of the lava, but based on spectrometer data, Io’s surface is covered with a mix of hot, basaltic or ultramafic silicates and a sulfur dioxide frost.

The low gravity and atmospheric pressure on Io create a perfect recipe for large and spectacular eruptions. Eruption plumes on Io can range from a height of 38 miles to more than 250 miles above the surface of the moon! This is why the plumes are so easy to pick out in photos from the various space probes that have passed the moon.

The temperature of lava flows and lakes on Io can be as high as 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The fall out and deposits from these nearly continuous eruptions rapidly change the surface of Io and the resulting deposits create beautiful mosaics of color.

Chaiten Volcano, Chile - John Seach
Eruptions continue at Chaiten volcano in Chile. On the afternoon of 23rd September 2008, continuous emissions were observed from the volcano. Ash fell in Chaiten town as a broad plume drifted south. A hotspot remains visible on satellite images. The volcano remains dangerous with an active lava dome growing in the summit crater.

Chaitén update, 24 September 2008
Posted by volcanismblog
[link to volcanism.wordpress.com]

SERNAGEOMIN may have omitted to mention it in their recent reports, but Volcanic Red Alert still applies at Chaitén. Translation of the most recent bulletin (dated 22 September 2008), the full Spanish text (PDF) of which can be found at Werner Luis’s site, is as follows. [link to inglaner.com]
The most notable piece of news is the increase in the magnitude of recent seismic activity, which SERNAGEOMIN suggests is related to dome-building rather than the injection of new magma at depth.

ERUPTION OF CHAITÉN VOLCANO
TECHNICAL BULLETIN NO. 54
17-22 SEPTEMBER 2008
OVDAS-SERNAGEOMIN

1. Visual observation

During the period of this report and in a similar way to the previous report, the eruptive activity has remained relatively low and variable, with eruption columns fluctuating in vigour and density, generally not exceeding 1.5km in altitude and forming a dispersion plume which rose to a maximum height of 2.0km and which dispersed according to the prevailing winds, principally towards the north-east and north.

2. Seismic activity

During the last month, the seismic activity has also remained relatively low and slightly variable, with a predominance of HB-type earthquakes over VT-type earthquakes, all decreasing in number and/or magnitude (energy).

However, since 20 September onwards, although the number has remained stable, the magnitude of the HB-type earthquakes has shown a renewed increase. During the last 18 hours around 35 earthquakes (approximately two per hour) were recorded which exceeded magnitude 3.0M, with the most significant of these at 11:00 today, which reached a magnitude of 3.5M.

3. Conclusions and interpretation

Since 20 September a growth in the magnitude (but not in the number) of HB-type earthquakes has been recorded. Although of greater magnitude, the characteristics of these earthquakes and preliminary measurements of depth indicate that they are little deeper, and are associated with the rupturing of rocks and movement of magma at relatively superficial levels and have no relation to an injection of magma at depth.

Although there has been no manifestation of a marked increase in eruptive activity, the increasing magnitude of the HB-type earthquakes may be related to a relative increase in the rate of growth of the dome. A comparable condition was registered at the end of July and, finally, there was a moderate increase in the rate of emission.

Bearing in mind that the eruptive activity remains relatively low and that there is a new upsurge in the magnitude of HB-type earthquakes (which confirms the variable behaviour of the seismic activity), which could increase eruptive activity, SERNAGEOMIN maintains the level of Volcanic Red Alert.

Some Congolese See Hope in a Caldron of Liquid Fire
[link to www.nytimes.com]
Teofilo Valente Hernandez
Some businessmen believe that Mount Nyiragongo, a volcano in eastern Congo, can attract tourist dollars to the battered region.
mtnyirag
By LYDIA POLGREEN
Published: September 22, 2008
GOMA, Congo — Mount Nyiragongo glowers over this forsaken city, a sullen and capricious king crowned with thunderheads.

The New York Times
War, cholera and other ills have ravaged eastern Congo.
To most people here this volcano with a vast lake of fire in its belly is a slumbering menace. Twice in 31 years, it has hurled lava toward the city, most recently in 2002, when it left thigh-high drifts of black rock where neighborhoods used to be. It blanketed cabbage fields with scree. Thousands fled to neighboring Rwanda. At least 50 people died.

To a city cursed by as many plagues as biblical Egypt — cholera, endless floods of refugees, war, hunger and genocidal militias, to name a few — the next eruption is just one more thing to worry about.

Goma, after all, sits amid the smoldering remains of the vast regional war that engulfed Congo in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide. Rebels and government soldiers still clash almost daily in the countryside and surrounding towns. Each week brings a new rumor that the city will once again be attacked.

But to a handful of optimistic businessmen here, Mount Nyiragongo is central to an effort to transform eastern Congo, best known as the epicenter of the deadliest conflict since World War II, into a tourist attraction.

“Congo used to be a jewel in Africa,” said Kennedy Rwema, a Congolese tour operator who is trying to draw tourists back. “We have mountain and lowland gorillas. We have beautiful countryside. And we have this volcano.”

For $200 his company, Hakuna Matata Tours, ushers tourists to the rim of the crater for an overnight stay. And business, surprisingly enough, is booming.

Eastern Congo is a place of exquisite beauty, especially the lush and mountainous Kivu region that abuts Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi. Goma, the capital of North Kivu, was once a picture-perfect town nestled among green hills lapped by Lake Kivu.

Years ago, before the lake was filled with the bodies of genocide victims on the Rwandan shore and those of cholera-stricken refugees on the Congo side, tourists swam in its crystalline waters. Before militias infested the surrounding hills, adventurers hiked them. Visitors could search out Congo’s fabled gorillas in the dense forests, until rampaging militias in search of minerals like coltan, gold and tin decimated the primate population.

The city once had plush lakeside lodges. These days the dilapidated hotels are full of aid workers. Besides being flattened by lava, the city bears the scars of attacks by a variety of armies.

But now a trickle of tourists is returning to Congo, formerly Zaire, lured by the promise of the untrammeled beauty as a result of the country’s long isolation. Dozens of visitors climb the steep slope of Mount Nyiragongo every month, camping for the night on a narrow ledge at the edge of the crater to see the lake of fire bubble and boil under the stars.

On a recent Saturday, at least three dozen climbers streamed up the steep trail to the 11,000-foot summit. Kalashnikov-toting park rangers accompanied the group, a reminder of how dangerous this place still is.

The visitors included a pair of New Zealanders on a cross-Africa trip, aid workers stationed in Congo and Rwanda and a Yale law student doing research on neglected humanitarian crises.

The path to the top is punishing. It was carved by lava from the first modern eruption, in 1977, and follows a ruthless upward trajectory for five long hours, first through thick forest, then through an increasingly stark, otherworldly landscape.

Columns of steam and gas rise from fissures in the ground. Riotous wildflowers erupt from cracks in vast lava fields. Trees stripped of their leaves in the last eruption stand like scarecrow sentinels along the trail. The air grows colder and thinner.

A crowd had gathered at the crater rim, with digital cameras snapping away at the roiling lake of fire more than 2,500 feet below.

“Unbelievable,” said Lindsay Silver, an aid consultant from California, as he stared into the mesmerizing caldron. “Incredible.”

The volcano is an object of reverence and fear for most Congolese, who have learned the hard way to stay clear of it.

Rosalie Feza has lived for decades on a small plot of land about 12 miles from the volcano. In 2002 she was planting in a nearby field when she heard the volcano emit a blood-chilling series of gurgles and belches, and felt the shimmies of the earth as the crater trembled and cracked.

She ran home and gathered up her children and a few possessions — a photo album, baptismal documents, clothes. “The lava was at our backs,” she said.

They ran to Rwanda, but returned a few days later. The ground was still hot enough to melt her flip-flops. She recognized her former home by a tree that was, miraculously, left standing.

The family rebuilt the house, this time with wood, not concrete, a loss that still stings, Ms. Feza said. “God says you have to accept whatever comes to you,” she said, fingering a plastic white rosary. “So I accept.”

If tourists want to climb to the crater and peer down at the lake of fire, she said, that is their business. “I’ll stay down here.”

Many residents of Goma say the volcano erupted as punishment for the city’s sins, and there is dark talk of past practices of virgin sacrifice.

Jean Bosco Butsitsi Bigrwa, a traditional chief of Bakumu, a region at the base of the volcano, said the traditions had been misunderstood.

“It wasn’t really virgin sacrifice,” he said. It was a kind of virtual sacrifice. In the old days, he explained, a customary chief would cloister his eldest daughter in the family compound, where she was a bride to the spirits that inhabit the volcano. She was allowed lovers, but never permitted to leave her father’s compound or to wed. “This is how we placated the spirits.”

But the old ways died out and the practice gradually disappeared. It was only a matter of time until the spirits vented their rage, Mr. Butsitsi Bigrwa said.

Volcanologists now closely monitor the volcano and say they will be able to anticipate the next eruption, which they do not think is imminent.

And tourism can provide jobs for hundreds, Mr. Rwema said. Each weekend, tour operators like him hire porters to carry tents and other gear up the mountain for $24, a hefty sum for Congo. He has hired several guides and started a school to teach them English.

“Tourism can end war here in Congo,” he said. “If people are working, they are too busy to fight.”

Our sources of information include daily MODIS satellite imagery provided by colleagues at ROSGEOLFOND (Russian Ministry of Natural Resources), ground-based observations of several volcanoes on the southern Kurile Islands, and time-delayed seismic data from Iturup and Kunashir Islands provided by colleagues at the Sakhalin Experimental and Methodical Seismological Department.

SVERT is not a 24-hour facility and our ability to detect activity at the many remote, uninhabited islands of the Kuriles is limited due to frequent poor weather and the lack of geophysical instrumentation. SVERT is seeking additional funding to improve its operational capabilities and to devebunnymunication plans with partners in the aviation and meteorological sectors to address the hazards to aviation in the Kurile region.

Alaska Volcano Observatory
Weekly Update
Friday, September 26, 2008 11:50 AM AKDT (19:50 UTC)

KASATOCHI VOLCANO
52°10'9" N 175°30'41" W, Summit Elevation 1030 ft (314 m)
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY

Low level seismicity at Kasatochi continues. Satellite views were mostly cloudy throughout much of the week. Clear satellite views over the last 24 hours showed a thermal anomaly, likely coming from cooling eruption deposits.

Kasatochi Volcano does not have a seismic network, thus AVO depends on networks on neighboring islands to monitor earthquake activity there. For this reason, low-level seismicity may not be detected and renewed volcanic activity is possible at any time with little or no warning.

OKMOK VOLCANO
53°23'49" N 168°9'58" W, Summit Elevation 3520 ft (1073 m)
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY

Seismicity at Okmok volcano continues at low levels. Satellite views remain cloudy throughout the week.

Although the level of seismicity is relatively low, it is possible for vigorous ash emissions to resume at any time.

CLEVELAND VOLCANO
52°49'20" N 169°56'42" W, Summit Elevation 5676 ft (1730 m)
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY

Clouds obscure Cleveland volcano in satellite and web camera views throughout the week. AVO received no reports of activity at the volcano.

AVO monitors Cleveland Volcano with satellite imagery as weather allows. The lack of a real-time seismic network at Cleveland prevents AVO from tracking local earthquake activity related to volcanic unrest. Short-lived explosions of ash that could exceed 20,000 ft above sea level can occur without warning and may go undetected on satellite imagery.

OTHER ALASKA VOLCANOES

Seismic activity is monitored in real time at 31 volcanoes in Alaska. Satellite images of all Alaskan volcanoes are analyzed daily for evidence of ash plumes and elevated surface temperatures. Some volcanoes may currently display anomalous behavior but are not considered to be at a dangerous level of unrest. Augustine, Iliamna, Redoubt, Wrangell, Gareloi, Great Sitkin, Makushin, Fisher, Shishaldin, Isanotski, Pavlof, Veniaminof, Ugashik-Ugashik-Peulik, Griggs, Snowy, Fourpeaked, Aniakchak, Tanaga, Kanaga, Akutan, Westdahl, Dutton, Ukinrek Maars, Martin, Mageik, Trident, Katmai, Novarupta, Spurr, and Korovin volcanoes are in color code GREEN and volcano alert level Normal. All are at or near normal levels of background seismicity. AVO did not detect ash plumes or significant elevated surface temperatures in the vicinity of any volcano.

CASCADES VOLCANO OBSERVATORY WEEKLY UPDATE
Friday, September 26, 2008 11:30 PDT (Friday, September 26, 2008 18:30 UTC)
[link to volcano.wr.usgs.gov]

Cascade Range Volcanoes
Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Aviation Color Code: GREEN

NOTICE: Mount St. Helens has been at Volcano Alert Level NORMAL and Aviation Color Code GREEN for the past month; therefore, we are migrating from a Mount St. Helens weekly update to a Cascade Range weekly update. As long as all Cascade Range volcanoes are at Normal and Green, we will continue to issue Cascade Range weekly updates. If a Cascade Range volcano shows signs of unrest, we will issue an update for that particular volcano.

Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range are at normal levels of background seismicity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry Volcano, and Crater Lake, in Oregon; and Medicine Lake, Mount Shasta, and Lassen Peak in northern California.

Recent Observations: Volcano seismicity at Mount St. Helens and elsewhere has remained quiet over the past week. This has also been a quiet week for field work in the Cascades. The only significant field activity involved a site visit to Crater Lake to improve our monitoring capability.

Montserrat Volcano Observatory
Weekly Report for the period 20 – 26 September 2008

Activity at the Soufriere Hills Volcano this week has been at a low level consisting mainly of continued rockfalls. Although the lava dome has been obscured by cloud most of the time, all evidence suggests that slow lava extrusion continues on the western side of the dome.

Seismic activity continues at a low level. MVO recorded 11 rockfalls, 3 long period and 3 volcano-tectonic events this week.

The northward wind direction over the week only allowed two days worth of sulphur dioxide (SO2) flux measurements. The average was 1239 tons per day, which is similar to the week before.

Clear view of the dome on Thursday 25 allowed visual observations of the dome and the Gage’s vent from helicopter. We did not observe any significant change in the vent area nor significant lava extrusion on the lower part of the dome.

Lava extrusion is expected to continue at low level. Visual observations along with the monitoring signals suggest that the extrusion rate is low, but an increase cannot be ruled out. Pyroclastic flows may occur without any warning, especially when there is heavy rainfall.

The Hazard Level is 3.

Additional information on the Soufrière Hills Volcano and the new Hazard Level System can be found at the MVO website: [link to www.mvo.ms.]

Current ACtivity @ Piton de la Fournaise, 9/25/08

Eruption in progress The eruptive trémor intensified slightly since midnight (see figure in bottom, intensity of the trémor recorded by the seismic station “Bory”). The eruptive activity is confined in the Dolomieu crater and continues quietly. Thanks to an air photograph (H. Douris), dimensions and the volume of casting could be estimated. The surface of run in the content of Dolomieu was about 180x100m (September 24 in the morning) with a maximum height about 30m, volume was estimated at approximately 300.000m3, and the medium flow is about 1m3/sec. Three summit seisms of low intensity were recorded yesterday. The situation is stable

Small eruption at Shiveluch
September 26, 2008 by Erik Klemetti
[link to eruptions.wordpress.com]

Shiveluch in Kamchatka experience a small eruption today. Russian authorities reported a ~4,500 meter ash column with associated local earthquakes, likely related to the eruption. In the same article, both Karymsky and Klyuchevskaya Sopka (also known as Kliuchevskoi) are erupting or showing signs of increased activity.

Shiveluch is one of the many active volcanoes along the Kamchatkan arc that is on the far eastern side of Russia. It has been continuously erupting since 1999, mostly in the form of small explosions, pyroclastic flows and lava flows/domes - your typical arc volcano.

Chaiten area airport north view. Cloud cover is low today. You can see a nice and reasonable plume coming off the volcano, and rising almost text-book perfect above the volcano. Good viewing today.

Re: Volcano update November 19, see pg 32Quote

amidst all the financial craziness today (and for the last few at least), I was still watching USGS and the other sites for new info. I caught something today that I haven't seen anyone post anywhere. SO, figured I should post my own heads up.

In Kermadec Islands, New Zealand, the largest island is home to Raoul Volcano. Today there was a Mw7 and Mw 5.3, plus likely smaller ones not listed on the USGS world map site.
5.3 2008/09/29 16:10:38 -29.909 -177.633 35.0 KERMADEC ISLANDS, NEW ZEALAND
7.0 2008/09/29 15:19:31 -29.872 -177.684 35.0 KERMADEC ISLANDS, NEW ZEALAND
[link to earthquake.usgs.gov]

It's exact location is 29.27 S, 177.92 W with a summit elevation of 516 m and is considered a stratovolcano. Raoul Island is triangular shaped, with a 3.3 km wide caldera. It last erupted IN March of 2006.

I suspect that there is a potential of something building there. Both were rather shallow, only about 35km in depth. But that was set by a location program. I couldn't find on USGS if these are considered VT (volcanic tectonic) earthquakes of normal ones. They are at the subduction zone, though. SO there is the likelihood of them being normal type earthquakes. We'll see. As is normal, something can be building for a mere hours to a few months. I'll keep posted about further earthquakes in the area.

Hi Nibiru2012. Welcome. It's quiet enough out in the volcanology world that I'm actively looking for stuff of interest. LOL!

I was able to find a bit more info, but not enough to satisfy my interest in it. The Kermadec Islands have a large number of volcanoes on them, Raoul is only one and it's current status is inactive, or normal/green. The earthquakes were both over 300 km south from the island of Raoul and 1000km northeast or Te Kaha... so if they were associated with volcanics it's most likely they are associated with one underwater.
