Chaitén Volcano, Chile -
Continuous eruptions are occurring at Chaitén volcano in Chile. The airfield at Chaitén town has been covered by ash and water, and is currently not able to be used. Ash and pumice is floating northwards along the Chile coast. The bay near Chaitén contains run-off from rivers with a milky-green colour. A large amount of sediment has blocked river channels, and lahars will continue to overflow river edges. Over the past two days there has been a marked change in seismic activity at the volcano. Earthquake swarms indicate fracturing of the main conduit, and indicate ascent of magma towards the surface. Increasing pressure from magma is creating a potential explosion hazard, and collapse of the dome, generating pyroclastic flows.

Activity Summary for last 24 hours: Kilauea Volcano is active at two locations. At the summit, small amounts of ash and elevated amounts of sulfur dioxide continued to erupt from the Halema`uma`u vent; today they are blown to the southwest by robust trade winds. At the east rift eruption site, lava continued to erupt from the TEB vent area and flow through tubes to the ocean.
Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: Molten lava probably exists at shallow depth within the new vent, but cannot yet be seen from the surface.
This morning, a white (gray or brownish if not directly illuminated) plume continued to issue from the vent in Halema`uma`u Crater and was being blown to the southwest by robust trade winds. Small amounts of ash continued to be found in collectors beneath the plume. Overnight, the vent glowed brightly when clear.
The SO2 emission rate remained high; the most recent average measurement (May 12) was 810 tonnes/day compared to a background rate between 150-200 tonnes/day. With the return of the trade winds, emission rate measurements should resume in the next day or two.
The summit tiltmeter network recorded weak deflation. Seismic tremor levels remained at elevated values. GPS receivers on opposite sides of the summit caldera recorded no extension or contraction above measurement error since April 26. Three earthquakes were located on south flank faults and two more were located beneath the area just west of the southwest rift zone.
Last 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents and flow field: Magma continued to degas at shallow levels beneath Pu`u `O`o before entering the lava tube system under the TEB vent and the rootless shield complex resulting in the emission of about 2,860 tonnes/day when last measured on May 11. No incandescence was seen in Pu`u `O`o crater overnight. The Pu`u `O`o tiltmeter recorded oscillations but no other significant change. GPS receivers recorded continued contraction across the crater at a rate of 2 cm (0.8 in)/month. Seismic tremor levels remained at low values with episodic low-frequency tremor bursts.
No incandescence was seen from TEB vent area, rootless shields, or the flow field above Royal Gardens subdivision. Geologists on an HVO overflight yesterday morning observed three points of entry from the Waikupanaha bench fed by a single tube and no surface flows anywhere on the flow field. UHH geologists reported a thin blanket of tephra extended a few hundred yards back from the central entry representing explosive deposits blown onshore during kona winds.

Activity at Etna: an update 18 May 2008
The ongoing eruption at Chaitén has tended to exercise a near-monopoly over the attention of volcano-watchers lately, but there has been much of volcanological interest going on elsewhere. Mount Etna, for a start, has been having an active time of it over the last few weeks.
After a quiet period of some seven months, Etna resumed activity with increased seismic activity and intermittent explosive activity of strombolian character between 21 and 28 April from a fissure on the eastern flank of the South East Crater at the summit.
From 21:00 local time on 1 May swarms of earthquakes were recorded along the north-eastern rift zone, and significant degassing took place at the South East Crater and North East Crater.
On 10 May between 13:00 and 14:00 UTC an increase in the intensity of tremors at the volcano indicated resumption of eruptive activity, although poor visibility prevented direct observation. The eruption involved strong strombolian activity at the South East Crater and lava emission (lava flows advanced about 6.4km along the western side of the Valle de Bove), and lasted to the early evening when seismic activity returned to normal background levels and the eruption ceased. Ashfall was reported from multiple locations during 10-11 May.
13 May saw powerful seismic signals and explosive activity in the early morning. Several powerful earthquakes were recorded and a significant thermal anomaly was recorded at the summit. A plume of ash was emitted around 11:30 which was blown towards the north-east of Sicily and Calabria: ashfall was reported in several villages in north-eastern Sicily. A significant eruptive fissure opened north-east of the South East Crater, between 2700 and 2900 metres above sea level. Sustained strombolian activity and the emission of a plume of ash was observed during the afternoon, although visibility remained poor. Repeated earthquakes on the north-eastern flank of the volcano indicated the migration of magma to this area.
Fumarolic activity continued into 14 May, with evidence of some effusive lava eruption from the new fissure. Visual observations on 14 May confirmed the appearance of not one but two new eruptive fissures, one just east of the summit craters and the other to the north-east of the South East Crater. From this latter opening lava flows were emerging, eventually extending for approximately 5 km.
The latest reports (17 May 2008) indicate that Etna is currently at low levels of seismicity and is producing strombolian activity and effusive lava flows from the two new fissures. Small ash-laden eruption plumes are reaching several hundred metres in altitude.
The current eruptive activity has posed no danger to life or property.

SERNAGEOMIN reported that on 7 May, seismicity from Chaitén increased and a large explosion was registered. On 8 May small pyroclastic flows traveled E and contacted the Rayas River, possibly causing steam plumes. During a break in the cloud cover, the ash-and-gas plume, present since 2 May, was seen rising to an altitude of 15.1 km (50,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifting NE. The W side of the plume was darker and denser. ONEMI (Oficina Nacional de Emergencia - Ministerio del Interior) reported ashfall in multiple areas on 7, 8, and 10 May.
On 12 May, the plume rose to an altitude of 8 km (26,200 ft) a.s.l. During an overflight conducted by SERNAGEOMIN, four more plumes of a similar altitude were generated by explosions and drifted NE. Several hectares of burned vegetation, likely from pyroclastic flows or lateral explosions, were noted on the N flank of the dome. Small pyroclastic flows may also have been responsible for completely burned forest to areas in the NE, and on the W and NW dome flanks. A lahar caused the banks of the Chaitén River to overflow about 200 m on each side, damaging about 40 houses and numerous cars that were partially or fully submerged. During an overflight on 13 May, evidence of pyroclastic flows on the N flank was observed. An ash-and-gas plume emitted from the lava dome drifted NE. The Alert Level remained at Red.
Avachinsky, Eastern Kamchatka, Russia
Based on information from KEMSD, the Tokyo VAAC reported that an eruption plume from Avachinsky rose to an altitude of 4.3 km (14,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted S and E on 10 May.

APRIL 2008 Yellowstone Seismicity Summary
During the month of April 2008, 70 earthquakes were located in the Yellowstone Region. The largest of these shocks was a magnitude 1.7 event on April 17, 2008 at 6:56 AM MST, located about 13 miles North Northwest of Pahaska Tepee, WY and 19 miles North East of Fishing Bridge, WY. This earthquake was not felt. There were no earthquake swarms. Earthquake activity in the Yellowstone region is at relatively low background levels.
Earthquake activity in the Yellowstone region is at normal background levels.
Ground Deformation Summary: Through April 2008, continuous GPS data show that most of the Yellowstone caldera continued moving upward at similar to slightly lower rates as the past year. The maximum measured ground uplift over the past 40 months is ~20 cm at the White Lake GPS station. An example can be found at: [link to pboweb.unavco.org]
The general uplift of the Yellowstone caldera is scientifically interesting and will continue to be monitored closely by YVO staff.
An article on the current uplift episode at Yellowstone and discussion of long-term ground deformation at Yellowstone and elsewhere can be found at: [link to volcanoes.usgs.gov]
From that link
"Using GPS and another satellite-based technique (InSAR), the authors find that parts of the Yellowstone Caldera rose as much as 7 cm (~3") per year during the period 2004-2006. The uplift is most noticeable at the White Lake GPS station, as has been discussed in our monthly YVO updates during the past year. As of late October 2007, the total uplift since 2004 at that location is about 17 cm. Chang and his colleagues credit the relatively rapid rise to recharge of magma into the giant magma chamber that underlies the Yellowstone Caldera. They also used numerical modeling to infer that the magma intruded about 10 km (6 miles) beneath the surface.
North of this region of uplift, another area at Yellowstone has moved downward over the past three years. This north rim uplift anomaly (NUA) had risen during the period 1996-2003, when the rest of the caldera had subsided. The activity was featured in a 2006 article in Nature Magazine with lead author Charles Wicks, one of the co-authors on the new article in Science Magazine. Chang and others hypothesize that magma input after 2004 caused fracturing of the crust that resulted in release of hydrothermal fluids from the north rim area. The loss of fluid pressure then resulted in deflation, or subsidence of the ground surface." |

 | | Re: Volcano update December 1, see pg 33 | Quote | Tungurahua update 18 May 2008
The Ecuadorian volcano Tungurahua, which produced some notable eruptive episodes early this year, has maintained a low to moderate level of activity since with no dramatic behaviour during April and May. However, there is evidence that the level of activity is once more on the rise, and the volcanologists of the Instituto Geofísico (IG) are keeping a close watch on developments. What follows is a summary for April and May 2008 based on the IG’s daily reports on Tungurahua for that period.
During most of April activity at Tungurahua was fairly low, restricted to emissions of gas and ash; the eruption column varied between 1000 and 4000 metres in altitude. Some ashfall occurred in villages to the south-west of the volcano. Rumbles and explosions could be heard, and occasional explosive activity projected blocks and bombs onto the upper slopes. Seismic activity remained low to moderate, with a larger earthquake being registered on 12 April. The heavy rains experienced at times during the month produced some small lahars.
At the end of April the seismic behaviour of the volcano changed, with more frequent and intense short period tremors reflecting the movement of fluids inside the volcano, but externally there was no significant alteration with degassing producing a plume of about 2000 metres altitude and ashfall to the west and southwest. Incandescence was observed at the summit in early May, and by mid-May strombolian activity was visibly occurring at the summit crater and incandescent blocks could be observed rolling down the slopes, sometimes for a distance of 1000 metres.
The latest observations (PDF) indicate that the seismic activity of the volcano is becoming more intense, with the presence of harmonic tremor indicating fluid movement within the edifice. Roaring sounds can be heard and are becoming more frequent and intense, and the level of explosive activity at the summit is rising. The ash plume is reaching altitudes around 3000 metres, and ashfall is occurring to the west of the volcano, and some lahars have been observed.

KILAUEA VOLCANO (CAVW#1302-01-)
19.42°N 155.29°W, Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Aviation Color Code: ORANGE
This report on the status of Kilauea volcanic activity, in addition to maps, photos, and webcam images (available using the menu bar above), was prepared by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). Information on the status of Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park can be found at [link to www.nps.gov]
This day in volcano history: Today is the 28th anniversary of the fatal explosive eruption of Mount St. Helens and the 84th anniversary of the fatal explosive eruption of Halema`uma`u Crater. Both eruptions took place on a Sunday and killed a man named Truman, says HVO geologist Don Swanson who has studied both eruptions. HVO will be extra vigilant at monitoring today.
Activity Summary for last 24 hours: Kilauea Volcano is active at two locations. At the summit, small amounts of ash and elevated amounts of sulfur dioxide continued to erupt from the Halema`uma`u vent and be blown to the southwest by trade winds. At the east rift eruption site, lava continued to erupt from the TEB vent area and flow through tubes to the ocean.
Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: Molten lava probably exists at shallow depth within the new vent, but cannot yet be seen from the surface.
This morning, a white (gray or brownish if not directly illuminated) plume continued to issue from the vent in Halema`uma`u Crater and was blown to the southwest. Small amounts of ash continued to be found in collectors beneath the plume. Overnight, the vent glowed brightly when clear; at times, the plume appeared thin enough that the vent back wall could be clearly seen.
The SO2 emission rate remained high and variable; the most recent average measurement (May 17) was 1,320 tonnes/day compared to 810 tonnes/day on May 12 and a background rate between 150-200 tonnes/day.
The summit tiltmeter network recorded the deflation of a DI tilt event starting at 3:15 am. Seismic tremor levels remained at elevated values, increasing slightly with the DI deflation; the number of small summit earthquakes started to increase around 3 pm yesterday and are continuing to increased as of this writing. GPS receivers on opposite sides of the summit caldera recorded no extension or contraction above measurement error since April 26. The average rate of contraction over the past three months has been about 1 cm (0.4 inches)/month. One earthquake was located beneath Halema`uma`u Crater and two more were located beneath the area just west of the summit.
The Pu`u `O`o tiltmeter recorded oscillations but no other significant change including a very weak deflation starting around 4 am that may be a response to the DI tilt event starting at the summit. GPS receivers recorded continued contraction across the crater at a rate of 2 cm (0.8 in)/month. Seismic tremor levels remained at low values with episodic low-frequency tremor bursts.
Last night, incandescence was seen from TEB vent area but not from the rootless shields or the flow field above Royal Gardens subdivision. Geologists observed three points of entry from the Waikupanaha bench and no surface flows anywhere on the flow field. The vigor of each entry point has been variable over the past few weeks; yesterday, the littoral cone behind the middle entry point was larger than the one built earlier behind the west entry point.

This morning, a white (gray or brownish if not directly illuminated) plume continued to issue from the vent in Halema`uma`u Crater and was blown low to the southwest. A ten-fold increase in the amount of tephra was found in collectors beneath the plume compared with the yields from the day before. Overnight, the vent glowed brightly when clear but nothing unusual was reported.
The SO2 emission rate remained high and variable; the most recent average measurement (May 18) was 680 tonnes/day during the DI deflation compared to 1,320 tonnes/day on May 17 and a background rate between 150-200 tonnes/day.
The summit tiltmeter network recorded the inflation of a DI tilt event starting at 5:40 pm. Seismic tremor levels remained at elevated values, increased slightly during deflation, and returned to values about 25% higher than those before the DI tilt event; the number of small summit earthquakes returned to background values. GPS receivers on opposite sides of the summit caldera recorded no extension or contraction above measurement error since April 26. The average rate of contraction over the past three months has been about 1 cm (0.4 inches)/month. One earthquake was located on the Koa`e fault system, one on south flank faults, and one beneath the southwest rift zone.
The Pu`u `O`o tiltmeter recorded inflation in a characteristically delayed response to the DI tilt event inflation at the summit.
CD officials reported three entry points with a lava stream visible toward the western edge of the Waikupanaha bench but no other noticeable surface flow activity.

Yes the history of Canary islands is very interesting, beyond the social political history. A hot spot volcano... looks also like a few of the islands may have at one time been a single island, much like Maui and it's surrounding islands.
Otherwise, the volcanoes there are still considered active, and are thought that if there was a major eruption or collapse of one, the it could cause an extremely devastating tsunami for the east coast.

If the earthquakes start becoming more numerous and a little stronger in magnitude, like a couple Mw5 area, and a lot of smaller ones, then I think it's time to worry about them.
Geogal , any comment on Canary Island earthquake today? I searched the history and I found it a little interesting. Quoting: lamchop |

Multiple trace signatures can over-write the initial signature, but the initial one is strongest. It's how they trace which was the magnetic pole was moving (north to south or south to north) and corrected where it would have been at the time of formation via plate tectonics.

In a period of time when so much is happening upon Earth, we emphasise the need to be vigilant and see beyond the immediate effects. As we have informed you for so long, changes on the Earth are both inevitable and necessary to once again restore it to a pristine condition. Over the last century the land and seas have been badly polluted, and without being reversed it would lead to a complete breakdown of the food chain, and the continuity of life. Already some species of animals have disappeared, and many more are under threat. In recent times it has become more serious, with the dangerous fall out from nuclear weapons.
The deteriorating conditions on Earth are such, that without our coming and use of advanced technology to reduce its effect, your planet would not be in readiness for Ascension. Also left to her own devices, Mother Earth would need to be far more volatile to reverse them. We as always keep an eye on what is happening, but can only get to full grips with the problems by openly coming to you. For many years we have warned successive Governments of the dangers of nuclear fall out and radiation, but little notice has been taken. As a source of energy it is unnecessary with so many other means now at your disposal. Free energy that is clean and in unlimited supply can at a stroke solve your problems, but is withheld to allow the oil companies to continue profiting at your expense.
Our advice is intended to be helpful and we do not condemn your way of progress. That has been your choice in accordance with your freedom to experience whatever you desire. The problem is that you have not been allowed to move on, and benefit from the many new technologies given to you over quite a number of years. Now it must change so that you can quickly halt the slide into chaos, which the dark use as an opportunity to further their own agenda. The negative energies that abound upon Earth are creating problems all around, and in these conditions Man will be unable to restore law and order, and find the world peace that has been absent for hundreds of years.
With our coming and plan for the restoration of Earth, the changes will quickly alleviate the present conditions. The first series of actions will address the needs of the poorest countries, and in general terms we look to ensure that the homeless and hungry and lifted out of their misery. In the long term we shall set up institutions that will handle political and financial concerns in a correct manner. The result will be Governments that truly and honestly represent their people, and banking systems that operate a fair policy. We have informed you for some time that the benefits of NESARA have incorporated into our plans, and they will ensure that poverty and debt become a thing of the past.
You can take full credit for the turnaround in your fortunes, as it was not so long ago that you looked unlikely to pass beyond the Millennium. The mass consciousness upon Earth has grown remarkably fast, by absorbing the Light that streams to you from many sources beyond it. It has been responsible for bringing hope and a new dawn where the dark forces no longer have any influence. Their power is already diminishing and their cherished dream of world control is fading away. They refuse to acknowledgement defeat, and still try to stay in power by any means whatsoever. That you have had two consecutive false presidential elections is in itself proof of their instability. The truth of all their actions and crimes against Humanity will ultimately be revealed, and those responsible will not escape justice. There are far greater powers than those on Earth, and they will have to make their way back to the Light from a very lowly position.
The Laws of Karma are exact and applicable to everyone, and your deeds cannot be hidden away. It is you who answer for them and in the Light only the truth can be given, there is no place for lies or placing blame elsewhere. God’s love exceeds all bounds and is given to all equally, and no soul is denied the opportunity to return to the Light. There is no such thing as eternal damnation, and that is the belief of Man who lacks the truth and spiritual understanding. Love pervades everything, and is the force that brings you infinite life and you are immortal. Your time on Earth that now draws to a close has been your freewill choice, and what you have learnt from the experiences will carry you further along the road to a Higher Consciousness.
Those of you who volunteered to come to Earth, came from the higher dimensions and desired the experience of separation from God. Your challenge was to rise up again and find your true Godself, whilst gaining experience of duality. It will add another facet to your understanding that will serve you well in the future. You have made many attempts to rise up out of the dark, and for periods of time have had some success. However, this cycle will be the first one that will see its completion with a victory over the dark forces. Hitherto, they have pulled Man down, and destruction and chaos has destroyed earlier civilisations.
This time you are assured that the cycle of duality is ending with your success, and never again will you have to endure the challenges that have assailed you. You may return to the lower dimensions by choice as they exist elsewhere, but not for Karmic reasons. Pat yourself on the back, because you have risen up in spite of the most severe testing and found your Light within. The truth of your journey will be part of ours and the Masters enlightenment of the masses, as your history can in no way reveal it all to you. Much of it has been concealed and deliberately hidden from you to keep you in the dark. All credit to you for overcoming the odds and now emerging as true Lighted Beings, you are truly the Christed Ones.
I am SaluSa from Sirius and pleased to have these opportunities to enlighten you. We salute your patience and understanding of these last days on Earth, and we are so near to you and will soon be standing alongside you.
Thank you SaLuSa
Mike Quinsey.

No new Chaitén bulletins from SERNAGEOMIN or ONEMI since last week; the latter organization has its hands full with the bad weather.
The Buenos Aires Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) is currently still reporting continuous ash admissions at Chaitén and maintaining a red alert for the volcano, but its most recent bulletins also forecast ‘no ash cloud’ in the next few hours, so it appears that the force of the eruption is diminishing. On the most recent available visible spectrum satellite image from the Argentine National Metereological Service (taken at 20:39 UTC, 19 May 2008) a faint V-shaped plume can be seen extending northwards from the volcano for about 50 kilometres:

The following news comes from the Chilean and Argentine media, which continues to follow the Chaitén story, although not to the intensive degree of the past few weeks.
El Mercurio reports on the ‘powerful environmental impact’ of the eruption: ‘in Chaitén [town] there will be no more victims, but there are more material losses. The districts around the volcano have suffered a dramatic transformation of the landscape, especially south of the town where ashes and the flood deposits of the overflowing Río Blanco’ have had a huge impact.
Venezuelan news agency Cadena Global reported on 19 March that the eruption column from Chaitén was reaching 10 kilometres in altitude. The Chilean presidential delegate for the emergency, Paula Narváez, made an overflight of inspection and was reported to be deeply affected by the scale of the disaster: ‘Today we realize how indomitable is nature, how strong, and what a challenge it is to live alongside it’. She declined, however, to put any price on the damage done: the Government is reluctant to commit itself to any specific sums for reconstruction, given that it is by no means certain that Chaitén can ever be re-occupied.

TUESDAY, 20. MAY 2008, 08:50:09
VOLCANOES, NATURAL HAZARDS
The theme of the ninth Accretionary Wedge hosted by Julian at "Harmonic Tremors" [link to harmonictremors.blogspot.com]
is significant geological events. I suppose that an event that nearly wiped out all human beings could be called significant.
In 1998 Stanley Ambrose proposed that the eruption of the supervulcano Toba reduced the world's human population to 10,000 or even a mere 1,000 breeding pairs. The findings were supported by DNA evidence. The last glacial period was preceded by one thousand years of the coldest temperatures of the Later Pleistocene, 71 to 70 thousand years ago. The intriguing but as yet unproven speculation is that it was caused by the eruption of Toba, Sumatra, leading to a “volcanic winter”. Toba was the largest known explosive eruption in the last two million years.
The length or severity of global cooling caused by the Toba eruption is debatable. The Indian subcontinent contains extensive deposits from the eruption. In a series of stone artefacts unearthed in southern India (Jwalapuram) suggest that local human populations remained in the region after the Toba eruption. The prehistoric tools were found in more than 7.5 m of sedimentary layers sandwiching a layer of ash produced by the Toba eruption, and the tools above were essentially at the same level of evolution as those below. The findings published in Science of 6 July 2007 seem to indicate that the impact of the Toba eruption was not as significant as earlier thought.
The Toba supervolcano-eruption produced the largest known volcanic eruption on earth during the past 2 million years. About 71,500 years ago, give or take a rough 4,000 years, an estimated minimum of 2800 km3 of magma were erupted, of which at least ca. 800 km3 was transported in atmospheric ash plumes that blanketed an area from the South China Sea to the Arabian Sea. This total volume is even more than the Yellowstone super-volcano eruption, much debated a couple of years ago, with a volume of an estimated 2500 km3 . The eruption led to the final formation of one of Earths largest calderas, the 35x100 km wide Toba caldera (See landsat image).

{Toba eruption @2800km3 compared to first Yellowstone @2500km3 eruption and Yellowstone second largest eruption @1000km3 and Mt St Helens @ 1 km3, which is roughly equivalent to Chaiten, thus far}
There have been no eruptions at Toba in historical time. Toba is located near the Sumatra Fracture Zone. I have marked this fracture zone as “SFZ” on the landsat image, where it is clearly visible as a light line. On the map it is marked by _._._. The movement directions are shown by arrows. Stratovolcanoes in Sumatra are part of the Sunda arc. Volcanism is the result of the subduction of the Indian Ocean plate under the Sunda plate. The subduction zone is marked by the Java Trench. The geologic symbol for a subduction zone is a line with "teeth" (black triangles). The teeth are on the over-riding plate. The rate of subduction is 6.7 cm per year.

A new Chaitén bulletin from SERNAGEOMIN today, the first for five days. It describes the system of seismic monitoring stations which is being installed at Chaitén by a joint USGS/SERNAGEOMIN team, but has absolutely nothing to say about the situation at the volcano itself.
Buenos Aires VAAC is maintaining ‘continuous emission’ status for Chaitén and their red alert remains in place, but their latest advisory reports that no ash cloud can be seen on satellite imagery and forecasts ‘nil’ ash over the next few hours. Cloud cover in the region is very heavy, and satellite images show no perceptible emissions from the volcano. Whatever Chaitén is putting out at the moment, if anything, is on too small a scale to rise above the clouds. The following visible-spectrum Goes-12 image (from the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional of Argentina), taken at 16:09 UTC on 20 May 2008, shows a sea of cloud with nothing special apparently going on over Chaitén (marked by the ‘x’) at all.
Current detail of Goes-12 satellite image of North Patagonia taken at 16:09:57 on 20 May 2008. The location of Chaitén volcano is marked by ‘x’. (Credit: Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, Argentina. The original image is here)
An animated Servicio Meteorológico Nacional Goes-12 image from the previous day, 19 May 2008, shows a relatively small northward-trending plume. And a beautifully clear satellite view taken on the same day can be found at Fresh Bilge under the appropriate heading ‘Snow and Ash’.
