No new Chaitén bulletins from SERNAGEOMIN or ONEMI since last week; the latter organization has its hands full with the bad weather.
The Buenos Aires Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) is currently still reporting continuous ash admissions at Chaitén and maintaining a red alert for the volcano, but its most recent bulletins also forecast ‘no ash cloud’ in the next few hours, so it appears that the force of the eruption is diminishing. On the most recent available visible spectrum satellite image from the Argentine National Metereological Service (taken at 20:39 UTC, 19 May 2008) a faint V-shaped plume can be seen extending northwards from the volcano for about 50 kilometres:
:chaiten519:

The following news comes from the Chilean and Argentine media, which continues to follow the Chaitén story, although not to the intensive degree of the past few weeks.
El Mercurio reports on the ‘powerful environmental impact’ of the eruption: ‘in Chaitén [town] there will be no more victims, but there are more material losses. The districts around the volcano have suffered a dramatic transformation of the landscape, especially south of the town where ashes and the flood deposits of the overflowing Río Blanco’ have had a huge impact.
Venezuelan news agency Cadena Global reported on 19 March that the eruption column from Chaitén was reaching 10 kilometres in altitude. The Chilean presidential delegate for the emergency, Paula Narváez, made an overflight of inspection and was reported to be deeply affected by the scale of the disaster: ‘Today we realize how indomitable is nature, how strong, and what a challenge it is to live alongside it’. She declined, however, to put any price on the damage done: the Government is reluctant to commit itself to any specific sums for reconstruction, given that it is by no means certain that Chaitén can ever be re-occupied.

but, a good sign is that the plume has calmed.... I believe that there still may be pyroclastic flows, but that isn't necessarily a bad sign.

Hi Geogal.
Thanks for keeping up on this important volcano information. Even I forgot to follow the story after first posting on it the day of the first eruption. Because of the length of the thread at this time and the importance of the information about this volcation, please would you mind giving us a one post current update. If you have time. I know you're busy.
This is a photo I downloaded from the web when the Chile volcano first erupted.

 | | Re: Volcano update December 1, see pg 33 | Quote | I've seen a few threads and different sites (away from GLP) wonder and fear about Chaiten affecting the global climate. In general, if what's erupted so far is about all it'll do, then it will affect the local climate, much like Mt St Helens in 1980. The amounts of material ejected and the height of the plume and length of time it emitted ash are similar to MSH to Chaiten. ON the opposite scale of what humans have seen and recorded, Mt Pinatubo 1991 ejected an order of magnitude greater by some 25+ times and the height of the plume and length of time it ejected was also greater. Mt Pinatubo affected the globe on enough of a scale and length of time to have changed temps for a couple years after the event. So, we will see if Chaiten does eject more ash in a potential collapse in the caldera, but as of now... no climate change except local.

the low and dirty, huh? This entire thread is dedicated to all world volcanoes, not just Chaiten, so, yeah... if you want just one bit of info it takes a lot of sifting.
Chaiten, as of May 19 had nearly stopped the ash plume, can be seen well right now via satellite due to cloud cover. Back about 1 week+ after the event, pyroclastic flows were seen in remote areas of the mountain and surrounding jungle, but not much. It's not been clear as to whether or not these are still happening. It's still at red alert phase and can still collapse or have another ash explosion phase.
prost. Thanks for the pic!

KILAUEA VOLCANO (CAVW#1302-01-)
19.42°N 155.29°W, Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Aviation Color Code: ORANGE
This report on the status of Kilauea volcanic activity, in addition to maps, photos, and webcam images (available using the menu bar above), was prepared by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). Information on the status of Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park can be found at [link to www.nps.gov]
Activity Summary for last 24 hours: Kilauea Volcano is active at two locations. At the summit, small amounts of ash and elevated amounts of sulfur dioxide continued to erupt from the Halema`uma`u vent and to be blown to the southwest by trade winds. The twelfth DI tilt event since March 12 is nearing completion. At the east rift eruption site, lava continued to erupt from the TEB vent area and flow through tubes to the ocean.
Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: Molten lava probably exists at shallow depth within the new vent, but cannot yet be seen from the surface.
This morning, a white (gray or brownish if not directly illuminated) plume continued to issue from the vent in Halema`uma`u Crater and was blown to the southwest by weak winds; the top of the plume is about 800 m (2,600 ft) above the ground level at the summit and drops closer to the ground as it moves out into the Ka`u Desert. In addition to the Halema`uma`u plume, the Pu`u `O`o plume is slowly entering the summit area from the south. Small amounts of ash have been found in collectors beneath the plume each morning; this morning's collection favored the west side under the plume. Overnight, the vent glowed brightly when clear and no unusual behavior was reported.
The SO2 emission rate remained high and variable; the most recent average measurement (May 20) was 980 tonnes/day compared to 380 tonnes/day on May 19 and a background rate between 150-200 tonnes/day.
The summit tiltmeter network recorded inflation of an ongoing DI tilt event (the 12th since March 12) starting just after midnight. Seismic tremor levels remained at elevated values and increased slightly during the deflation portion of the DI event. GPS receivers on opposite sides of the summit caldera recorded slow contraction and subsidence. The average rate of contraction over the past three months has been about 1 cm (0.4 inches)/month. Two south flank and one summit earthquakes were located.
Last 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents and flow field: Magma continued to degas at shallow levels beneath Pu`u `O`o before entering the lava tube system under the TEB vent and the rootless shield complex resulting in the emission of about 2,060 tonnes/day when last measured on May 20. A flash of diffuse incandescence was seen from the east side of Pu`u `O`o crater at 8:05 pm. The Pu`u `O`o tiltmeter recorded inflation delayed from the summit inflation portion of the ongoing DI tilt event. GPS receivers recorded continued contraction across the crater at a rate of 2 cm (0.8 in)/month. Seismic tremor levels remained at low values with episodic low-frequency tremor bursts.
Last night, incandescence was seen from TEB vent area but not from the rootless shields or the flow field above Royal Gardens subdivision. CD officials reported three or four entry points with a lava stream clearly visible behind one of them on the Waikupanaha bench but no other noticeable surface flow activity.

 | | Re: Volcano update December 1, see pg 33 | Quote | Toba, a seismic look since 2004
by me
May 21, 2008
Some interesting background info on Toba. The Toba caldera is the Earth's largest Quaternary caldera and sits at about 2.58N and 98.83E lat/lon. It was formed during four major Pleistocene eruptions beginning at 1.2 million years ago and culminating with the colossal eruption about 71,500 (+/- 4000) years ago. That event was an estimated volcanis index of 8 and produced about 2800 cub km of tuft , more than the 2 largest of yellowstones eruptions combined. Lake Toba is about 100km by 30km, and over 500m deep, the largest volcanic lake in the world. It lies on and adjacent to the Sumatra fault, or fracture zone (SFZ).
:toba1:

{Toba eruption @2800km3 compared to first Yellowstone @2500km3 eruption and Yellowstone second largest eruption @1000km3 and Mt St Helens @ 1 km3, which is roughly equivalent to Chaiten, thus far}
There has been little recent volcanic or seismic activity in the lake, except at a small fumarole field at the southern end of the island in the lake (Samosir). There is an active and extensive seismic network in the area, considering that Indonesia has 128 active volcanoes, 70 of which have erupted in the last 400 years. 31 volcanoes are constantly monitored from 35 stations. Krakatoa is one of the more famous in Indonesia, as well as Toba. It's thought that Toba will not erupt any time in the near future.
:toba3:
Distribution of seismograph stations (diamond, broadband; square, short period) and local
earthquakes (blue and red dots) used for tomographic inversion (red dots represent quakes in the 0 ± 45 km
depth range, and blue dots are for the 45 ± 200 km range). The mesh shows the outline of the velocity model
region. The center of the mesh is at 2.58N, 98.88E. The orange region shows the present-day topographic
depression at Toba, and dark blue is the region covered by the lake.
The small cone of Pusukbukit has formed on the southwestern margin of the caldera and lava domes. The most recent eruption may have been at Tandukbenua on the northwestern caldera edge, since the present lack of vegetation could be due to an eruption within the last few hundred years. Some parts of the caldera have experienced uplift due to partial refilling of the magma chamber, for example pushing Samosir Island and the Uluan Peninsula above the surface of the lake. The lake sediments on Samosir Island show that it has been uplifted by at least 450 metres since the cataclysmic eruption.
The seismic history of Toba in long and strong. Most of the strongest earthquakes in the region of Indonesia have been in the subduction zone, or the Java trench. It's rate of subduction is about 6.7cm/yr, or very active. The island area was seismically active with major earthquakes in 1892, 1916, 1920-1922, and 1987 (August 25, me 6.3 at about 11km in depth). Since beginning of 2004, 11 of the 37 most notable and dangerous earthquake events in the Indonesia area have happened on or off-shore west of the island Lake Toba is part of. Most have happened on average about 31km below the surface. Listed is the lat/lon, depth, date, location, magnitude (Mw) and any associated fatalities for those 11. The Mw9.3 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and the Mw8.6 2005 Sumatra earthquake, the epicenters of which were around 300 km from Toba.

Clearly although it is not expected to erupt for many thousands of years, there have been a number of strong earhtquakes which since 2004 which have been quite close to Toba. I recall reading somewhere that the 2004 EQ did cause some activity in and around Toba itself.
Worth keeping an eye on, especially looking for swarms closer to the lake. Cheers.

The alert level for Mount Semeru, the tallest volcano on Java and one of the most active, has been raised to level three after it spewed ‘heat clouds’ down its slopes, media reports say. Do they mean pyroclastic flows? The Indonesian authorities have said that the activity poses no danger, and urged local residents to remain calm and stay put.
Semeru has effectively been in a continuous state of eruption since 1967.

Very true... I believe that this is one that is watched pretty close, if for no other reason, the level of devastation that it can inflict.
Interesting thanks for that Geogal.
Quoting: OxygenX Woman of white garment, foreign woman, earth-eating woman, taking and giving life, she is Pele

quite nice, thanks. It'll get back to that same beauty... It may take many years but it will be back to it. |

The babelfish translation isn't too good, but gives you an idea:
The meteorological conditionses allowed yesterday, Wednesday 21 of May, the aerial approach to the eruptive center of Chaitén volcano being able to appreciate, from the South sector, the flank of the dome on which it dispersed towards south-east a low column that a profuse fall fed on pyroclasts in the proximal zone. , From the North flank a remarkable new dome could as well be observed, for the first time, that are assets with sporadic explosions that they generate scrolls reddish and piroclásticos flows smaller than descend towards the North ones on their flank. In the western end of this new dome, a white aqueous vapour column is equally active. Towards the south, in the active crater, main the eruptive column stays vigorous but low, pushed the south-east by prevailing winds. Generally, the column has stayed of oscillating form, with sporadic explosions elevate that it on the volcanic building.
On board the helicopter Naval Bolkow 44 of the ship Aquilles, it was realised I fly over of the coastal strip between Chumildén and Auchemó. It was stated the outpost flood of the city of significant Chaitén and the stuffed one of this one with removilizado piroclástico material. The qualification of the new stations Chumildén and Auchemó, most external of the seismic network of monitoring was completed yesterday and that have been with sound-ranging connection to the Center of Operaciones Queilen (COQ). During the today day Thursday is planned to complete the installation of the receiving phase of the signal that finally will allow the reception in real time of this one and their immediate analysis.
Seismic activity: The increase of the seismic activity represented by a cluster of hybrid events is attributed, mainly, to a migration of flowed (volcanic magma and gases). The LF seismicity (3 Hertz) would reflect the movement associated with the magma emission, whose accumulation in surface gives rise to the construction of a new dome. The high frequencies, as well, would correspond to landslides generated by the collapse of the dome in formation. Finally, SERNAGEOMIN maintains Volcanic Alerta Red and still it continues the preoccupation by possible explosions majors that could produce the destruction of the old dome and the generation of piroclásticos flows. The occurrence of lateral explosions does not discard either. Eruptive dynamics now includes the evolution of the new dome, whose growth and collapse can, as well, to generate piroclásticos flows on its flank. |

Definitely should stay on the RED alert. If the new dome is growing on a flank, or side, of the volcano mountain, it's not indicative of a full collapse, like was first possibly feared. It can still happen, but, it sounds more like it may be preparing to blow in a particular direction.

It reminds me of Montserrat: violent eruptions followed by gradual dome building, interupted by occasional explosions. The people of Montserrat had nowhere to go because the island is too small, but the volcano makes it bigger if you can wait long enough. At least in Chile they can back off a ways. |
