KILAUEA VOLCANO (CAVW#1302-01-)
19.42°N 155.29°W, Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Aviation Color Code: ORANGE
This report on the status of Kilauea volcanic activity, in addition to maps, photos, and webcam images (available using the menu bar above), was prepared by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). Information on the status of Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park can be found at [link to www.nps.gov]
Activity Summary for last 24 hours: No significant changes. Kilauea Volcano is active at two locations. At the summit, small amounts of ash and elevated amounts of sulfur dioxide continued to erupt from the Halema`uma`u vent. At the east rift eruption site, lava continued to erupt from the TEB vent area and flow through tubes to the ocean.
Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: Molten lava probably exists at shallow depth within the new vent, but cannot yet be seen directly from the surface. Hot wall rock provides the incandescence seen at night reflected in the gas and ash plume and from the wall marking the east side of the vent.
A white plume (gray or light brown when in shadow) continued to issue from the Halema`uma`u vent; trade winds are blowing the plume to the southwest about 300 m (1,000 ft) above the ground. A small amount of ash was found in collectors beneath the plume consisting of bits of spatter from the molten pool below and altered rock dust from the walls of the vent; some of the tephra collected were a bit bigger than what would strictly be considered ash.
The SO2 emission rate remained high and variable; the most recent average measurement (May 25) was 990 tonnes/day compared to 1,540 tonnes/day on May 24 and a background rate between 150-200 tonnes/day.
The summit tiltmeter network did not record a coherent signal, i.e., the tilt vectors did not point toward or away from the same area, suggesting that volcano changes are minor. Seismic tremor levels have gradually decreased since early April but remain at elevated values; temporary episodic increases in tremor continued. GPS receivers on opposite sides of the summit caldera recorded no contraction or extension greater than measurement error since May 18. The average rate of contraction over the past three months has been about 1 cm (0.4 inches)/month. One earthquake was located on south flank faults.
Last 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents and flow field: Magma continued to degas at shallow levels beneath Pu`u `O`o before entering the lava tube system under the TEB vent and the rootless shield complex resulting in the emission of about 2,060 tonnes/day when last measured on May 20. No incandescence was seen in the Pu`u `O`o crater last night. The Pu`u `O`o tiltmeter recorded minor oscillations. GPS receivers recorded continued contraction across the crater at a rate of nearly 2 cm (0.8 in)/month. Seismic tremor levels remained at low values with episodic low-frequency tremor bursts.
The tube system seems stable and is efficiently transporting lava from the vent to the ocean. No incandescence was seen from the TEB vent area, the rootless shields, or the flow field above Royal Gardens subdivision. Frequent small earthquakes continued in the vent area.

16 - 24 May 2008: Fissure eruption in Valle del Bove, Mt Etna
After a paroxysm at South East Crater (SEC) on 10 May 2008, a new SSW-NNE oriented dike split SEC and propagated into the upper parts of Valle del Bove on 13 May. The activity started with a spectacular hawaiian eruption of very fluid lava along a fissure 1 km long at altitudes between 2800 and 2900m.a.s.l. During the following days the activity declined into small lava flows and mild strombolian spattering. All times are local (GMT + 2hr). The focal length of the lenses used on a digicam is given (to be multiplied by 1.5 to obtain the equivalent focal length on 24x36 film).

Things appear to be quiet at Etna right now, after some weeks of occasionally spectacular activity. The last week has seen episodes of strong tremor and strombolian activity with ash emission and small lava flows associated with the new eruptive fissures that have been the focus of the eruptions that have been taking place since April. The latest activity report (PDF) from the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia - Sezione di Catania indicate that only a single new lava flow, some 5.75km in length, could be observed from an overflight that took place this morning, and that activity at the summit craters was limited to degassing and fumaroles. Geochemical analysis (PDF) indicates that no new eruptive phase is currently under way: ‘The geochemical data acquired during the last week of observations do not give evidence of any variations in activity of particular importance … The slight decrease in helium isotopes in peripheral gas samples and the constant level of CO2 emissions from the soil would seem to indicate the absence of new phases of the recharging of deep magma (5-13 km below sea level)’. Toulouse VAAC reports indicate no current ash emissions.

Seismic activity at Tungurahua remains elevated, the volcano is continually emitting ash, and explosive activity at the summit continues, albeit at a slightly reduced intensity when compared with preceding days, reports the Ecuadorian Instituto Geofísico (IG) in their latest daily bulletin (PDF). The explosions may be fewer in number, but are marked by ‘a slight increase in size’. The eruption column has reached a maximum altitude of 4km, with ashfall taking place to the west, and lahars, produced by recent heavy rains, have been reported north-west of the volcano.
The IG held a meeting yesterday in the civic hall of Cevallos, reports El Comercio, and warned that activity at Tungaruhua may continue to increase to levels last seen in February this year, or even in August 2006. ‘Over the past two months there has been a gradual increase’, said IG volcanologist Patricia Mothes, ‘But last weekend saw a marked increase in activity. There are more explosions, more earthquakes and ash’. An updated risk map was also distributed for scrutiny by the local authorities.
Reports in the Ecuadorian newspaper La Hora and AFP say that the mayor of Penipe has requested the declaration of a state of emergency for the district because of the revival of activity at Tungurahua and in particular the constant emission of ash and resulting mudflows and landslides. The existing state of emergency for the areas around the volcano expires this month, and local political leaders are pressing the Ministry of Internal Security for its renewal, ensuring the continuing supply of funds and other support.

An interesting satellite image of Chaitén volcano has been published at the NASA Earth Observatory Natural Hazards site. Taken on 26 May 2008 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite, the image shows what the commentary calls ’several unusual features that likely result from the volcano’s activity’: the blue-green colour along the coastline and on inland bodies of water (perhaps floating pumice), opaque white emissions from the volcano that fill the valleys and leave mountain peaks clear, and a combination of airborne and ground-deposited ash to the east.
:chaiten526:
Above is the full NASA image, with the plume being blown northwards from Chaitén. It appears that the heavier ash-bearing portions of the eruption cloud are sinking into, and dissipating through, the valleys - in the central part of the image, it almost looks as milk has been spilt into the fissures of the landscape. To the right, over Argentina, the still-airborne ash can be distinguished from the ash deposits on the ground by its greyer colouring. Below is a close-up, taken from the large version of the image, of Chaitén volcano and its immediate surroundings. The widened channels of the sediment-filled rivers and the volcanic deposits that are being flushed into the sea clearly be seen. The brown area in the centre is Chaitén town, now flooded and engulfed by mud.

The incandescence seen at night is caused by wall rock heated by the molten lava below and the gas released and rising up through the vent. Wink outs, or short episodes where vent incandescent abruptly turns off, associated with small earthquakes was observed a few times last night by the midnight watch scientist.
A white plume (gray or light brown when in shadow) continued to issue from the Halema`uma`u vent; trade winds are blowing the plume to the southwest about 300 m (1,000 ft) above the ground with the top ascending into low clouds. This morning, a smaller amount of ash was found in collectors beneath the plume than on several previous days.

No incandescence was seen in the Pu`u `O`o crater last night. The Pu`u `O`o tiltmeter recorded minor oscillations with a small increase in response to local rainfall. GPS receivers recorded continued contraction across the crater at a rate of nearly 2 cm (0.8 in)/month; GPS receivers also recorded subsidence of the crater at a rate slightly more than 1 cm (0.4 inches)/month. Seismic tremor levels remained at low values with episodic low-frequency tremor bursts.
The tube system seems stable and is efficiently transporting lava from the vent to the ocean. CD officials report vigorous ocean entry activity last night with no observed surface flows below the top of the pali.

Chaitén Volcano, Chile -
Eruptions at Chaitén volcano in Chile have decreased, but still remain continuous. Last Sunday the column of gas and ash reached about 3.5 km above sea level, with occasional eruptions reaching 5 km high. A lava dome continues to grow in the crater and exceeds the old dome in height. South of the dome a 200 m wide crater has formed, which continuously erupts ash and gases. Ash continues to fill rivers surrounding the volcano. Lahars are still entering Chaitén town. Seismic signals from explosions, gas emission, and pyroclastic flows have decreased in intensity and frequency. Future hazards at the volcano include dome collapse with pyroclastic flows, blockage of the vent followed by larger eruptions, and lateral eruptions.

On the International Volcano Research Centre site, Chaiten still is the only volcano to remain at "red" alert... this means that there are still indications that a collapse is possible, and it's still considered erupting somewhat hazerdously. |

No new bulletins from SERNAGEOMIN since Monday.
An earthquake of 5.4 on the Richter scale took place at 14:16 local time (18:16 UTC) yesterday 67km south of Puerto Montt in southern Chile, at a depth of 22.4km. The quake caused ‘panic’ around Chaitén, reports 26 Noticias (Argentina), which usually sensationalizes things. The University of Chile’s Servicio Sismológico reports that no injuries or material damage resulted, and ONEMI agrees.
The earthquake was 88km north of Chaitén volcano, but was much closer to the volcanoes Hornopirén, Apagado and Yate (which have no confirmed historical eruptions) and Huequi (whch has). The depth of the hypocentre suggests a tectonic cause.
Ash from Chaitén has forced the cancellation of Chilean internal flights: airports at Temuco, Valdivia, Osorno and Puerto Montt are currently affected, reports Univisión today (quoting AP). 123 Chile says that the national airline LAN has been forced to cancel all flights to the south, but that this is because of a change in wind direction (the plume is now being blown northwards), not because the volcano is becoming more active: ‘It should be emphasized that the suspension [of flights] is due not to a reactivation of Chaitén volcano, but to the change in wind direction’. Erik Klemetti at Eruptions observes that these cancellations indicate the presence of a more sizeable eruption column than SERNAGEOMIN reported on Monday; he also calls Chaitén ‘one of the more important and interesting eruptions of the last few hundred years’.
La Nacion reports the latest on a story that has received much coverage in Chile and abroad: the fate of Chaitén’s pets. Some 74 local pets - mostly dogs - have been rescued by police over the past few days, and are in the process of being re-united with their owners. Salmon-farming is an important part of the local economy in southern Chile, and an operation to rescue thousands of salmon is also under way.

Hi angelpbj,
history of rocking...
XINJIANG-XIZANG BORDER REGION had a Mw7.2 on March 20, 2008. It's not too far northwest from the Sichuan-Gansu area... additionally the Sichuan-Gansu area is know to get as high as Mw7.6-7.2 (1932-1948) and many others in their history. Plus, it's in very close to the recent Mw7.9 on May 12... and yes, 2 earthquakes this large so close can put stresses on faults in remote places of the similar region, especially. And this specific area hasn't released energy at high levels for over 60-70 years. It likely has a short period expected between tectonic events, likely 100 years max between large events, I'd guess.
What's happening?
A recent report released only last summer, a researcher published in the international journal Tectonics concluded that geological faults in the Sichuan Basin, China "are sufficiently long to sustain a strong ground-shaking earthquake, making them potentially serious sources of regional seismic hazard." The faults in this area of China also tend to be lateral and strike-slip (similar to most California faulting), with variable rates of slip per year per fault. The recent mw7.9 was from a reverse thrust fault, which puts out dangerous shaking and strong sudden energy. The mountain area there has risen 5 km in the last 55 million years, quite a bit... due to a large part that the Indian Continent has been pushing north into the CHina Continent creating the Himalayas. There are also stresses from the subduction zone to the east,
So, with that in mind, the trend of the earthquakes, energy-wise have been decreasing in strength from the initial shock. Some have been strong, yes, but. The trend I see is event-aftershocks, possible secondary event-aftershocks. We can definitely expect more aftershocks, but it doesn't appear to be building. The aftershocks can continue for weeks after.

is another big one on the way?
There is the potential for these earthquakes (from March shakes) to cause stresses locally, and even somewhat remote, likely hundreds of miles is possible. There is the potential for more earthquakes in China, also, since they tend to be quite active tectonically, historically. My hunch tells me that they have similar activity with their subduction zone as we have here, plus they have the added stresses of the Himalayan "collision zone". They are likely having an increased year for movement on their faults, laterally and vertically. I'd not be too surprised to see more of this kind of activity for at least a few more months, strong shake then many aftershocks, and yes some strong. It'd be pretty similar when we get a very large one here again in California. I'd consider Mw6.0 fairly large, but not even close to the Mw7.0 energy range. They will feel reasonable strong (Mw6-6.9), and even big/large (Mw7.0+) maybe even with in a few months... but, more likely within a few years.

Thanks Geogal, it was a very comprehensive answer! It is totally satisfactory for me.
As I can understand it, we're dealing here with a very large body (planet Earth) with its correspondingly large internal movements and a few months or even years of strong or large EQs can be understood as an adjustment of larger periods of stress accumulation. Makes perfect sense for me.

The incandescence seen at night is caused by wall rock heated by the radiant molten lava below and the gas released and rising up through the vent.
A white plume (gray or light brown when in shadow) continued to issue from the Halema`uma`u vent; trade winds are blowing the plume to the southwest about 300 m (1,000 ft) above the ground; just after dawn, the plume was being blown more westward into the flank of Mauna Loa. Small amounts of ash were found in collectors beneath the plume; intricately curved volcanic glass was prominent, as were the usual beads, coarse hair, and larger shapeless pieces.
The SO2 emission rate remained high and variable; the most recent average measurement was 1,180 tonnes/day on May 28 compared to 990 tonnes/day on May 25 and a background rate between 150-200 tonnes/day.
The summit tiltmeter network finally showed some organization and recorded weak deflation. Six earthquakes were located on south flank faults and two were located beneath the Napau Crater - Pu`u `O`o section of the east rift zone.
Last 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents and flow field: Magma continued to degas at shallow levels beneath Pu`u `O`o before entering the lava tube system under the TEB vent and the rootless shield complex resulting in the emission of an unusually high 4,700 tonnes/day on May 27 compared to a more background value of 1,920 tonnes/day when measured on May 25; we plan on remeasuring this rate as soon as weather permits. No incandescence was seen in the Pu`u `O`o crater last night, however the new gas jet beneath the east rim was still going strong. The Pu`u `O`o tiltmeter recorded minor oscillations with a few correlated with minor variations in tremor amplitude.
CD officials report vigorous ocean entry activity last night which provided good viewing. Low clouds blocked any views of the pali.

A new article in Geotimes paints a vivid picture of Jupiter’s moon Io, which is squeezed and stretched into a frenzy of volcanism by the tidal influence of Jupiter’s gravitational pull and that of its nearby moons Europa and Ganymede:
Io, a sulfurous rock about the size of Earth’s moon, is bursting with volcanoes. With more than 400 active vents spewing red-hot lava, the moon is by far the most geologically active body in our solar system. Some of Io’s most spectacular eruptions eject plumes of debris nearly 500 kilometers into outer space. Io’s surface churns so vigorously that the landscape is devoid of the impact craters that characterize our moon or planets such as Mars. Instead, Io’s tumultuous surface is covered with vast calderas the size of Texas, huge sulfurous lakes and extensive lava flows.

We were recently shown a paper by Karen S. Harpp, Alison M. Koleszar, and L. Dennis Geist that presented instructions for the safe demonstration of an explosive volcanic eruption. In less than a second, the explosion carries up to 20 gallons of water into an eruption column more than 10 meters high. Boiling liquid nitrogen encased in a plastic soda bottle provides the driving force for the explosion. The demonstration is appropriate for levels ranging from elementary to graduate school and dramatically illustrates how the rapid expansion of a liquid-hosted gas can cause explosions.

Kilauea, Hawaii, USA
Posted on May 30, 2008 by cosmicbob
Based on observations during helicopter overflights, visual observations from HVO and National Park Service (NPS) crews, and web camera views, HVO reported that during 21-27 May lava flowed SE through a lava tube system underneath Kilauea’s Thanksgiving Eve Breakout (TEB) and rootless shield complex to the Waikupanaha ocean entry. Incandescence was occasionally noted from the TEB vent area. An overflight of Pu’u ‘O’o crater on 23 May revealed that a new gas vent about 30 m below the E rim jetted gas at temperatures as high as 600 degrees Celsius.
During the reporting period, Kilauea summit earthquakes were located beneath the Halema’uma’u crater, S of the summit, along the S-flank and Koa’e faults, SW of Hi’iaka Crater, and along the SW rift zone. The eruption from the vent in Halema’uma’u Crater continued to produce white plumes with minor ash content that drifted mainly SW. During most nights incandescence was seen at the base of the plume. Seismic tremor was elevated. The sulfur dioxide emission rate was high and fluctuated between 990 and 1,540 tonnes per day when measured during 23-25 May. The background rate was 150-200 tonnes per day.

Semeru, Eastern Java, Indonesia
Posted on May 30, 2008 by cosmicbob
CVGHM reported that during 15, 17-19, and 21 May, ash plumes rose from Semeru’s summit, rockfalls descended the flanks, and multiple pyroclastic flows traveled 500-3000 m from the active crater. On 21 May, incandescent material was propelled from the summit. Based on visual observations and increased seismicity, CVGHM raised the Alert Level from 2 to 3 (on a scale of 1-4). The community was advised not to go within 4 km from the summit on the SE flank.
Chaitén, Chile
Posted on May 30, 2008 by cosmicbob
Based on observations of satellite imagery and pilot reports, the Buenos Aires VAAC reported that during 21 and 23-27 May ash plumes from Chaitén rose to altitudes of 3-6.4 km (10,000-21,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted N, NE, E, and SE. Cloudy conditions occasionally inhibited observations. A thermal anomaly was present on 26 May.
During aerial observations on 21 May, SERNAGEOMIN scientists observed a new lava dome that formed in the interior of an active crater on the N flank of the older lava dome. Explosions from the new lava dome generated reddish plumes and small pyroclastic flows that descended the N flank. Steam plumes were emitted from the western part of the dome. Eruption plumes generated from an area in the S part of the active crater drifted SE. The Alert level remained at Red. An overflight conducted on 24 May revealed that the lava dome had grown slightly and was just above the top of the old dome. A crater about 200 m in diameter S of the new dome emitted ash and gas. Block-and-ash flows traveled mostly N. Many of the areas rivers were gray with ash and pumice. Lahars along the Chaitén river continued to affect Chaitén town. During 24-25 May, ash plumes rose to an approximate altitude of 4.6 km (15,100 ft) a.s.l.; explosions occasionally propelled the gas-and-ash column to an altitude of 6.1 km (20,000 ft) a.s.l.
SERNAGEOMIN reported that during 23-26 May, the number and intensity of seismic events decreased, and explosions were less powerful and produced smaller volumes of material. On 25 May, ONEMI reported that the 50-km high-risk zone was reduced to 24 km due to the decrease in activity. Residents were permitted to retrieve property and animals from within the high-risk zone.

Weekly Report for the period 24 – 30 May 2008
Activity at the Soufriere Hills Volcano remained low over the past week, with the exception of Thursday 29 May. At 02:38 PM an explosion occurred without any precursory sign, producing (i) an ash plume reaching 10,000 feet (3,000 m) above sea level and (ii) a pyroclastic flow behind Gages mountain on the Plymouth side. The flow was relatively thick but extremely slow and only reached a few hundred meters. This explosion was slightly bigger than the one on May 13 but thanks to the prevailing wind to the South-West, no ash fall affected Old Towne, Olveston or Salem. The sound produced by the explosion was reportedly heard in Olveston, Salem, Flemming’s and further north at the secondary school.
Observations from helicopter flight on the following day (Friday 30 May morning) suggest that the pyroclastic flow originated from the Gages vent, as did the explosion. No signs of destabilization of the dome were observed.
The pause in dome growth continues and seismic activity remains low. This week, the MVO recorded 10 rockfalls, 2 long period and 8 volcano-tectonic events. No sulphur dioxide (SO2) flux was available for the week due to instrumental issues.
The activity over the past few weeks shows continuing unrest at the volcano. Even if lava extrusion does not restart, the dome is still a very large mass of very hot material which is capable of collapsing or exploding at any time. Lahar activity in river valleys around the volcano is a potential hazard during and after periods of heavy rainfall.
The alert level remains at 4.
Access to all areas on the southern flanks of the Belham Valley except Isles Bay Hill and the east of the Belham Bridge, is prohibited as is south of Jack Boy Hill to Bramble airport and beyond. The Maritime Exclusion Zone around the southern part of the island extends 4 km off shore from Spanish Point to Roches Yard on the east side of the volcano, 2 km offshore from O’Garra’s to Sturge Park on the south west.

Chaitén Volcano, Chile -
Continuous eruptions are occurring at Chaitén volcano in Chile. On 28th May ash emissions reached 4 km high and affected communities hundreds of kilometers north of the volcano. Ash forced the closure of airports at Puerto Montt, Osorno, Valdivia, and Temuco. Lower level winds scattered ash eastwards along the coast between Chaitén and Chumildén, near Talcán Island. Earthquakes have been diminishing over the past few days. The decline in seismic activity has accompanied the decrease in height of the eruption column. Larger explosive eruptions are still possible.
Cerro Azul Volcano, Galápagos Islands -
Cerro Azul Volcano in the Galápagos Islands erupted on Friday 30th May after 10 years of inactivity. Seismic activity was felt at Porto Villamil at 21:43 hr at the onset of the eruption. A red glow was visible from the town indicating a lava flow. Ash emissions extended 75 nautical miles NW of the volcano. National park staff are currently performing an overflight to determine the extent of the eruption, and the impact on the flora and fauna of the area, including rare tortoises, which live near the crater. Initial information indicates lava flowed down the south side of the volcano. The last eruption in 1998 sent lava down the south side of the volcano burning several tortoises.

At the summit, small amounts of ash and elevated amounts of sulfur dioxide gas continued to erupt from the Halema`uma`u vent. At the east rift eruption site, sulfur dioxide gas continued to issue from Pu`u `O`o and its new gas vent; lava continued to erupt from the TEB vent area and flow through tubes to the ocean.
Last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: Molten lava probably exists at shallow depth within the new vent, but cannot yet be seen directly from the surface. The incandescence seen at night is wall rock heated by the radiant molten lava below and the gas rising up through the vent.
A white plume (gray or light brown when in shadow) continued to issue from the Halema`uma`u vent; trade winds are blowing the plume to the southwest about 200-300 m (650-1,000 ft) above the ground. Small amounts of ash continued to be found in collectors beneath the plume each morning.
The SO2 emission rate remained high and variable; the most recent average measurement was 550 tonnes/day on May 30 compared to 1,180 tonnes/day on May 28 and a background rate between 150-200 tonnes/day.
The summit tiltmeter network recorded minor oscillations not organized well enough to distinguish a volcano signal. Seismic tremor levels have gradually decreased since early April but remain at elevated values; episodic increases in tremor continued. GPS receivers on opposite sides of the summit caldera recorded no contraction or extension greater than measurement error since May 18. The average rate of contraction over the past three months has been about 1 cm (0.4 inches)/month. Two earthquakes were located on south flank faults.
Last 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents and flow field: Magma continued to degas at shallow levels beneath Pu`u `O`o before entering the lava tube system under the TEB vent and the rootless shield complex resulting in the emission at another unusually high rate of 2,980 tonnes/day in the morning and 3,330 tonnes/day in the afternoon on May 30 compared to a background value closer to 2,000 tonnes/day when measured on May 25 and earlier.
No incandescence was seen in the Pu`u `O`o crater last night; the new vent on the east crater wall continued to jet heated gas and is possibly responsible for the higher SO2 emission rates measured over the past several days. The Pu`u `O`o tiltmeter recorded minor oscillations.
Weak incandescence was seen in the small hole between two larger collapse pits on the TEB shield overnight. CD officials reported that one strong, explosive entry was providing visitors good, light-show-like views last night. A second entry farther to the west became visible after 7 pm. No active surface flows were observed anywhere on the flow field.

The Instituto Geofísico of Ecuador issued a new Special Bulletin (PDF) for Tungurahua, 29 May 2008. Since 23 May, the bulletin observes, the increase in activity at Tungurahua has become much more marked, ‘with the occurrence of significant numbers of explosions and more frequent and intense columns of ash, and therefore increased ashfall in areas near the volcano’. On 28 May there were two volcano-tectonic earthquakes, the first at a depth of 9km under the volcano, the second at a depth of 5km. Progressively shallower earthquakes under a volcano are an ominous sign:
Such earthquakes generally indicate that fractures are occurring during the ascent of magma toward the upper part [of the volcano] and are therefore indicators of a pressurization of the magmatic system of the volcano. In general these events are precursors to major eruptive activity, as has been observed in previous eruptions of the volcano.
Yesterday morning, 29 May, there was an hour-long period of strong tremor ‘accompanied by intense roaring sounds, significant emissions of ash and the expulsion of blocks and incandescent materials from the crater’. A similar episode occurred a few hours later. This type of activity suggests that ‘the internal pressure of the volcano is not sufficient to maintain a continuous process of the expulsion of material’; this behaviour ‘could persist for hours or days at similar levels’ or ‘it could mark the beginning of major future activity, leading to similar eruptive events to those which occurred in 2006 and February 2008′.
A report in El Comercio today describes explosions from Tungurahua rattling windows in nearby towns, and the volcano’s eruption column of ash reaching 5 kilometres in altitude.

 | | Re: Volcano update December 1, see pg 33 | Quote | Cerro Azul: ‘new eruptive period’ under way 30 May 2008
Cerro Azul in the Galapagos Islands is a 1640m-high shield volcano that last erupted (VEI=1) in 1998. According to the Ecuadorian Instituto Geofísico (IG) a ‘new eruptive period’ began yesterday evening (29 May 2008) with the detection of seismic signals in the vicinity of the volcano from 21:43 local time. Satellite images from the same time period revealed a hotspot on the southern side of Cerro Azul, and ‘a reddish glow’ was observed ’in the direction of the volcano’. This morning, according to the IG’s Special Bulletin No. 1 (PDF) on Cerrro Azul, the activity was still in progress:
The satellite image (VAAC) of 07:15 (Galapagos time) this morning showed the presence of an eruption column, probably with low ash content, extending some 75 nautical miles to the north-west of the volcano. At the time this report went to press the presence of a hotspot in the vicinity of Cerro Azul could still be observed, so the production of lava flows is certainly continuing. Galapagos National Park personnel are currently conducting an overflight at the volcano, to ascertain more precisely the location of the eruptive centre and carry out an initial assessment of the spread of lava flows and their likely impact on the fauna and flora of the area.
Initial information from the overflight indicated that the eruption originates on the south-eastern flank of the volcano.
‘The eruption is a natural process of regulation, as the Galapagos Islands are of volcanic origin’, El Universo quotes a relaxed Galapagos National Park official as saying today.

The latest from SERNAGEOMIN is the following bulletin, dated 30 May 2008:
30.05.2008 SERNAGEOMIN bulletin concerning the Chaitén volcano
Permanent eruptive activity continues in a subplinian phase.
On 28 May the eruptive column remained between 3.5 and 4km above sea level and the plume was blown in a northerly/north-westerly direction, affecting areas hundreds of kilometres to the north and forcing the closure of airports in Puerto Montt, Osorno, Temuco and Valdivia.
At lower altitudes, orographic winds from the east dispersed ash westwards to affect areas along the coast between Chaitén and Chumildén, in addition to the island of Talcán. This zone was covered by a dense haze produced by ash in suspension, which prevented the carrying out of overflights.

[Caption for the above image: Crater of Chaitén volcano and southern flank of the old volcanic dome on 26 May 2008. Towards the north two columns of gases and ashes can be seen, the southernmost of which contains a large amount of water vapour, while the other has more abundant emissions of ash and pumice. On the left the western part of the active dome can be seen.]
Seismic activity
During the past few days the VT [volcano-tectonic] earthquakes have continued to decline, both in number and magnitude. No hybrid [quakes] have been detected, that would be associated with the growth of the dome, nor long-period earthquakes that are associated with the movements of magma and gases. The foregoing confirms a continuing decrease in seismic activity.
In consequence, the decline in seismicity has coincided with a decrease in the heights of the eruptive columns, as confirmed over the week. Finally, although seismic activity and the intensity of the explosions have fallen, we cannot exclude the possibility of the occurrence of major explosions caused by obstruction of the eruptive conduit, which could produce the partial destruction of the dome and the generation of pyroclastic flows.
The latest GOES-12 satellite image from the Argentine Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, taken at 17:45 UTC on 30 May 2008, shows a smallish northward-trending plume from Chaitén, with ash fallout visible across a large area to the west of the plume. Below is a detail view of the Chaitén area: the volcano is slighly left of centre. The full-size image from which this detail comes is here.

ONEMI says there was an earthquake at 22:25 local time yesterday in the Hornopirén area north of Chaitén (the same locality as the quakes of 28/29 May), level 3 on the Mercalli scale, but no-one else seems to have any information about it. Nothing in the press, nor from the USGS or any of the other earthquake reporting services, nor even Chile’s own Servicio Sismológico. UPDATE: the Servicio Sismológico now have a report about the quake: their bulletin is here [link to ssn.dgf.uchile.cl]
They say it was a 4.5M quake, at a depth of only 6.2km.

Dukono Volcano, Indonesia -
Dukono Volcano in Indonesia was upgraded to level 3 alert (out of maximum 4) on 30th May 2008. Volcanic explosion earthquakes increased from 32/day to 280/day between April and May 2008. On 25th May, ash emissions reached 800 m above the crater, and booming noises were heard coming from the summit. Ash emissions reached 1000 m above the summit on 29th May. Residents close to the volcano are warned to be alert for ashfall. A 3 km exclusion zone has been placed around the volcano. The volcano was on alert level 2 between January 2002 and May 2008.
