Bitcoin Has Probably Entered A Permanent Saturation
[link to jochen-hoenicke.de (secure)]

Bitcoin has had over 150,000 daily unconfirmed
transactions for five weeks now and hit a peak
of 485,000, over twice the previous peak. It's
increasingly likely that Bitcoin has entered a
period of permanent saturation which will grow
increasingly worse towards the end of 2023 as
more miners capitulate in expectation of the coin
halving in early 2024.

Unconfirmed transactions tend to be self
perpetuating and consume more bandwidth as they
try multiple times to resolve. Hosts have to
retransmit over and over, trying to get concensus
for a transaction, which triggers more failures
because of even less bandwidth.

I predict current situation will worsen into 2024.

Very silly. Submit a transaction with a zero fee, what do you think will happen? Transactions are happening right now, you could send one any time and have it processed, just need to include the appropriate fee!

fee isn't the issue. there isn't enough bandwidth
from remaining miners to support transactions.
if everyone paid $20, you'd still have 150,000
transactions failing daily.

and miners will drop out en mass by year's end if
coin price stays under $50k, meaning more failures.

if you remove the coin subsidy, the average
transaction cost is $50.

income = 330k coins x $27k = $8.9 B

cost = 140 terawatts @ $0.08/kwatt = $11 B

600k transactions x 365 days = 220m

$11 B cost / 220m = $50 per transaction and it's
already operating in saturation mode.

why would I pay $50?

over the past year, 1/2 of miners went bankrupt.

in the past 60 days, bitcoin received a large
influx of money fleeing the bank collapse. for
the past five weeks, submitted transactions are
higher than the remaining miners can handle
and at a coin price of $27k, most are still losing
money on coin subsidy.

cost: 140 twatts @ $0.08/kwatt = $11B
income: 330k coins x $27k = $8.9 B

network still losing $2B per year.

in 1st qtr, coins go to 165k.

income: 165k x $27k = $5B

miner losses rise from $2B to $6B.

game over.
