Yellowstone, that's a caldera. |

Seems that things may be heating up in that part of the world. |

Actually Colombia is closer to Miami then it is to Chaiten. There are permanent eruptions in southern Chile, just about every other year there is big one. IMO it is life as usual around that area. |

so, it's ''life as usual'' for thousands of years dormant volcanoes to spring to life, eh? |

Exactly!
There are a few MIGHTY calderas around the world that haven't spewed their stuff for many a century. We really wouldn't want one of those waking up... |

yes.
If Chaitan let go to it's full potential it'd be bad enough. we're already in a ''food crisis'' remember!
Pinatubo lowered temps by a degree after it blew, and this one is 50% bigger.
let's hope the thing goes back to sleep. |

My mistake I guess. I hope it is no different than the eruptions we have had in recent years here in Chile at the Llaima, Antuco , Lascar and earlier at Lonquimay. During the great earthquake in 1960 we had at least thee vulcanos fuming almost at once. Five years earlier in 1955 one the "Carran" emerged from nowhere and started its eruption. It si very near Futrono -my poster name : )- The " Villarrica" which is by a lake and a beautiful tourist area is always releasing smoke. Maybe the high vulcanic activity around here led me to believe that this is another one from the many... I hope my hunch is not wrong.
BTW is ChaitEn not ChaitAn
Peace. |

Yes, it's a very active area, but long dormant volcanoes waking up like this is a very worrying sign. sorry for biting yer head off, but there's so many smartarses on here with their throw away debunking comments, I simply thought you were another wiseguy!

No problem. I did not pay attention to the time it had been dormant. Will do some reading to check what happened in some of our earlier volcanic eruptions and see if they followed, at least some of them, the same pattern. This area is very special. We have fairly constant earthquakes . No one really panics anymore . Back in 1960 which in terms of the big History is like today, we suffered the strongest ever measured earthquake in modern times, tsunami, vulcanic eruptions all-included resort type thing... I was 5 years old and remember it as if was today, could not remain standing, the streets of my hometown moved like they were made of jelly... Quite an experience...

Anonymous Coward User ID: 427658 5/4/2008 3:26 PM | | Re: Chaiten is a CALDERA volcano | Quote | yes, I know about that quake. all linked to what is going on today of course, I know that, but things seem to be getting more and more unstable all around the ring of fire. this volcano waking up like this is NOT good imho!
if it was one of the regular erupters, Ok, but something doesn't sit right with me about this one.
With a bit of luck, this eruption will stay relatively small, and relieve a hell of a lot of pressure all around the ring of fire, fingers crossed! |

mikkeL User ID: 427817 5/4/2008 3:36 PM | | Re: Chaiten is a CALDERA volcano | Quote | The most probable cause for ice ages are regular spikes in volcano activity, a few Pinatubos or two Krakatoas could easily trigger a new ice age, the only question is what would cause this upsurge in volcanic activity |

I remember watching a BBC documentary about what would happen if it 'blew'.
You're talking about a possible near-extinction level event - this thing is huge!

The evacuation of the inhabitants of the town Chaiten (1200) and Futaleufu ( 2000) is under way. The vulcano had minor eruptions yesterday -sunday- Chilean authorities ( president included) are in the area, helping out to speed the process and to lift their own political ratings as well :) They dont want a Katrina PR effect , local elections coming up soon. This is a very remote area, lots of wilderness, beautiful beyond belief in some parts. Roads are scarce. Enviromentalist do not want more roads in the area so it is a touchy issue |
