 Quoting: BadMoonRising 373223

pyroclastic material is some serious stuff you do not want to be in the way of. It is also a sign of intensity and the changing composition of what is being coughed up. I think Vesuvius had 5 or 6 pyroclastic storm surges as the ash column colapsed in 79AD. I am not sure how many Pinatubo had in '91. Which was also a rhyolistic caldera like Chaiten, as compared to Mt. V's strato.

So perhaps it took a few days to clear its throat and is now ready to sing?

Any Voclcanolgists able to read the tea leaves for whats next?

well, seeing as Pinatubo erupted for, I think 2 days,(not certain about) and this thing is into it's FIFTH day now, and is now erupting ''on a different scale'', and is 50% bigger than Pinatubo, and Pinatubo lowered global temps by 2 degrees C, and etc etc etc etc, it's not hard to see where we're going here, is it?

The main(old) crater is now inactive. A new one approx. 500 yards away is the main source of eruption right now...

Could this be playing in to the sudden spike in the price of oil futures? Betting on increased demand for heating oil/nat. gas if things cool off a bit?

10 miles away lies Minchinnavida, at 2404 meters tall as compared to Chiaten 1122m, a strat, last eruption 1835. Mayhaps they share some connection like Katami-Novarupta?
BTW st Helens sent ash to 16k feet we are at at least 23 today according to sources.

looks like we are in a VEI of around 6, if it gets much bigger then were looking at a 7; think: Tambora 1815. Five days of ash plume followed by one day of utter hell and several days of a rain of ash to wrap it up.

Tambora was a stratovocano though, and there was a loud bang like Krakatoa. No reports of anything like that. Although I am sure that it must have made some noise in the last few days. What this caldera will do remains to be seen.

That would be bad.

There may or may not be a caldera, but what is being refered to here is the geologic features that are indicitive of the nature of the eruptions to date. Chaiten has features of a calderic volcano with a lava dome. Compare this to St. Helens which is a stratovolcano. Differnt types produce differnt rusults and sometimes one type becomes another after some event.

well, we're well into day 5 now.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

''Mount Tambora (or Tomboro) is an active stratovolcano on Sumbawa island, Indonesia. Sumbawa is flanked both to the north and south by oceanic crust, and Tambora was formed by the active subduction zones beneath it. This raised Mount Tambora as high as 4,300 m (14,000 ft),[2] making it one of the tallest peaks in the Indonesian archipelago, and drained off a large magma chamber inside the mountain. It took centuries to refill the magma chamber, its volcanic activity reaching its peak in April 1815.[3]

Tambora erupted in 1815 with a rating of seven on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, making it the largest eruption since the Lake Taupo eruption in AD 181.[4] The explosion was heard on Sumatra island (more than 2,000 km or 1,200 mi away). Heavy volcanic ash falls were observed as far away as Borneo, Sulawesi, Java and Maluku islands. The death toll was at least 71,000 people, of whom 11,000–12,000 were killed directly by the eruption;[4] the often-cited figure of 92,000 people killed is believed to be an overestimate.[5] The eruption created global climate anomalies; 1816 became known as the Year Without a Summer because of the effect on North American and European weather. Agricultural crops failed and livestock died in much of the Northern Hemisphere, resulting in the worst famine of the 19th century.[4]

During an excavation in 2004, a team of archaeologists discovered cultural remains buried by the 1815 eruption.[6] They were kept intact beneath the 3 m (10 ft) deep pyroclastic deposits. At the site, dubbed the Pompeii of the East, the artifacts were preserved in the positions they had occupied in 1815.''

This one's was about 3.5 km as compared to Pinitubo's 2.2km. Large, but not huge like say Toba which is something like 35 x 100km or however big Long Valley or Yellowstone is.

Tambora had an estimated ash plume of 40+km high. As of this a.m. reports were that we were in the 23km range, it would have to get seriously worse. Pinitubo was something like 33km?
