I heard that this volcano had been dormant for over 9000 years. Can anyone confirm that?

Chaitén Volcano, Chile
Five shallow focus earthquakes (10 km depth), larger than magnitude 4, accompanied the eruption of Chaitén volcano in Chile. The earthquakes occurred in a region of low historical seismicity, therefore were probably related to the eruption of the volcano.

On 6th of May the eruption at Chaitén volcano in Chile intensified with the eruption column reaching an altitude of 30 km (100,000 ft). This makes the eruption possibly the largest since Pinatubo in 1991. The nearby town of Chaitén could end up buried, like the Roman city of Pompeii following Mount Vesuvius' eruption in 79 A.D. Volcanic ash is already 5 feet deep in some places. Volcanic material from Chaiten's last eruption measured up to 2 m (6 feet) in places. During a helicopter overflight on 6th May at 10:00 hr, observations showed two explosion craters on the northern side of the dome had merged to form a single crater with a diameter of 800 m. Lava is rising in the crater but has not yet spilled over. There have been no reports of pyroclastic flows. So far, Chaiten has emitted only a few thousand tons of sulphur dioxide. In 1991 Mt Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines emitted 20 million tons of sulphur dioxide in 1991, and caused a brief period of global cooling.

video feed as of May 6. both look similar to what has been seen already. This shows it when it was still 2 craters. It's now caved/opened up to one big one.

It's not likely to cause a cooling period as large as some of the really big ones in the past. Then again, this even is not over and needs to be closely monitored and watched. A few thousand tons of SO2 will likely stay local, hemisphere-wise.

i was using "google earth" to look at the chaiten volcano location and i decided to look at the south pole.
What i find strange is we do not have a REAL image of the south or north poles.
Is this because the poles are hollow as some have claimed?
Strange that this program allows you to look at any place on earth and limits your access to the poles.
any theories?hollow earth?

''As of the 9th of May, the Global Volcanism Network (GVN) reported that eruptions continue at the Chaitén volcano. Chaitén, which erupted on the 2nd of May, following increased seismicity in the region the day before. A pulsating white to gray ash plume rose to an estimated altitude greater than 21 km (68,900 ft) a.s.l. and drifted SSE. The Alert Level was raised to Red. Based on observations of satellite imagery and pilot reports, the Buenos Aires VAAC reported an ash plume at altitudes of 13.7-16.8 km (45,000-55,000 ft) a.s.l. drifted NE. According to news articles, Chile's government declared a state of emergency on 2 May and several hundred people were evacuated from the town of Chaitén (10 km SE). The eruption was initially thought to have been from Minchinmávida, about 17 km ENE, which last erupted in 1835.''

Chaitén Volcano, Chile
Eruptions continue at Chaitén volcano in Chile. Small pyroclastic flows have been observed at the volcano descending eastwards into Raya river. Yesterday, the eruption column reached an altitude of 14 km at 2pm, and drifted northeast. A new crater has opened up at the western base of the dome. Seismic monitoring equipment has been moved from the town of Chaitén to a safer location on Talcán island. The number of volcano-tectonic earthquakes remains constant at 35 events per day, concentrated on the outer regions of the volcano. Two large explosions occurred on 6th and 7th May (23:35 hr). A shallow reservoir of magma at 5 km depth has been ascending towards the surface. Breaking of rock in the conduit due to magma ascent has been responsible for the large explosions. An ongoing hazard at the volcano is the collapse of eruption columns, or dome collapse, creating pyroclastic flows which descend radially from the volcano into adjacent valleys. Helicopter overflights will continue to visually monitor the volcano as well as retrieve seismic data. The alert level remains at the highest rating, RED.'' |

Chaitan was considered a dormant volcano having not erupted for centuries. Interestingly, another supposedly dormant volcano in Colombia erupted a couple of weeks ago.
Seems that things may be heating up in that part of the world.
Actually Colombia is closer to Miami then it is to Chaiten. There are permanent eruptions in southern Chile, just about every other year there is big one. IMO it is life as usual around that area.
so, it's ''life as usual'' for thousands of years dormant volcanoes to spring to life, eh?
Exactly!
There are a few MIGHTY calderas around the world that haven't spewed their stuff for many a century. We really wouldn't want one of those waking up...
yes.
If Chaitan let go to it's full potential it'd be bad enough. we're already in a ''food crisis'' remember!
Pinatubo lowered temps by a degree after it blew, and this one is 50% bigger.
let's hope the thing goes back to sleep. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 427658
Dude, pinatubo released WAY more ash, chaiten hasnt reached a fraction of the ash spewed out by pinatubo, it doesnt matter the caldera size really, it matters upon what it decides to do! This wont cause global cooling, perhaps a small amount of the southern hemisphere, global conditions to change it will need to spew out millions of tons more of ash into the air. |

Chilean volcano ash could 'collapse' any minute
A huge plume of ash towering above the Chilean Chaiten volcano could collapse and plummet to earth, an expert has warned.
Residents within a 30-mile (50 kilometre) radius of the volcano have now been forced to evacuate from the area.
The Chaiten volcano is located about 1200 kilometres south of Santiago.
Luis Lara, a Government geologist and volcano expert says that it is possible the plume of ash and rock debris could collapse, killing anyone within it's path.
"We are at a critical point of this phase given the characteristics have remained the same for several days," Mr Lara said.
"The volcano is now at its limit and one possibility is that the column could collapse quickly, generating flows of pyroclastic material down its ravines.
"But there are also other scenarios, such as the energy of the eruption being released more gradually."
Geologists have now recommended that the town be moved from it's current location near to the volcano.
